Book Description

Avant-garde theorist and architect Bernard Tschumi is equally well known for his writing and his practice. Architecture and Disjunction, which brings together Tschumi's essays from 1975 to 1990, is a lucid and provocative analysis of many of the key issues that have engaged architectural discourse over the past two decades -- from deconstructive theory to recent concerns with the notions of event and program.

The essays develop different themes in contemporary theory as they relate to the actual making of architecture, attempting to realign the discipline with a new world culture characterized by both discontinuity and heterogeneity. Included are a number of seminal essays that incited broad attention when they first appeared in magazines and journals, as well as more recent and topical texts.

Tschumi's discourse has always been considered radical and disturbing. He opposes modernist ideology and postmodern nostalgia since both impose restrictive criteria on what may be deemed "legitimate" cultural conditions. He argues for focusing on our immediate cultural situation, which is distinguished by a new postindustrial "unhomeliness" reflected in the ad hoc erection of buildings with multipurpose programs. The condition of New York and the chaos of Tokyo are thus perceived as legitimate urban forms.

This book was required for our studio (third year), and I am very glad that it was. I found it to be thought-provoking and helpful to my studio project.

1 out of 5 stars Big Dud.......2004-05-11

If the architecture of Frank Gehry, has been described as a movie composed entirely of special effects, then Tschumi's is like special effects that don't quite come off. Herbert Muschamp, the modernist cheerleader who is the architecture critic for the NY Times, began his review of Tschumi's Lerner Student Center at Columbia University by saying "By now, everyone knows that Bernard Tschumi's new Lerner Hall is a dud." And City Journal described his work as ""an agitated, irrational mix of limestone, brick, metal, and glass... giving the impression of a building on the edge of a nervous breakdown." Journalist Robert Locke has written, ""Tschumi's theoretical writings, the basis of his reputation, are a tangled mess that alternately induces dizziness and puzzlement as to whether the author actually knows what philosophy is, or merely heard it described by someone in a bar once ...... The worst of this stuff is so self-evidently empty as to defy attack". - It only remains for you to ask yourself whether you are one of those fools who will be taken in by this confidence trickster who has ruined the cities we live in, or whether you will move on to more intelligent reading. [Hint: Try Louis Kahn. It's a good start!]

1 out of 5 stars Hypocrital.......2004-04-28

Disjuntion indeed. More BS pontification than valuable commentary. The arguments are poorly considered, heavily flawed and bear no tangible relationship to the projects they are supposed to describe. Tschumis is just one of the many theoretical architects who make great claims about the buildings and cities they design for, but in practice produce the same tired cliched sculptural rubbish that has ruined Paris and other great places. But worse, Tschumi's buildings are poorly built and look even worse after a few years. - Check out his work at Columbia Campus in New York. The loading dock of any warehouse looks better than the entry ramp that he designed. - Time to wake up from the rubbish Tshumi and his ilk have been getting away with for years.

1 out of 5 stars Pedestrian at best........2003-12-04

Tschumi states more-or-less obvious truths about the failure of modern architecture to create meaningful places. The arguments are clear, if simply stated. - My big regret is that the writer never heeds his own message. Tschumi himself is one of the worst practitioners of the very ideologies he criticizes. [Anyone who has looked at the Columbia building by Tschumi will know how poor, cold, puerile, vacuous and dumb (that's right DUMB) a building it is.] Tschumi has fallen into the trap so common in architecture these days, of believing that writing ("theorizing") is more important than observing and building for a true reality. Pragmatics and real life issues are not his bag. - In the end, Tschumi is just another architectural hypocrite. He sort of knows the real stuff, but is too much of a wanker (ask your British friends if you don't know what a wanker is), to care about real architectural problems enough to solve them. - A few diagrams here, a few poorly assembled details there ... who cares if it falls apart three days after he photographs it. - It's just such a pity this flaky poof is allowed to teach. - If you read it, (and I don;t recommend you waste your time doing so), just ask yourself if the doctor seems to use his own medicine.

5 out of 5 stars The most relevant study on Theory of Architecture in decades.......2000-03-20

In an amazing collection of essays, Tschumi criticizes both modernism objectivity and post-modern nostalgia. His most important proposition -- that there is no cause and effect relationship between function and space -- is a kick in the teeth of functionalist thinkers. Instead of "form and function", he proposes an architecture based on "space, event and movement", in which the conflit and contradictions between the terms of the equation is its most relevant aspect. "Architecture and disjunction" is a Pandora's Box -- some of the questions it proposes are painful and disturbing (like "what is space?", for instance), but have been overlooked long enough. To paraphrase Morpheus in the movie "The Matrix", "you can take the blue pill, and believe whatever you like, or you can 'read the little red book', stay in Wonderland, and I'll show how deep the rabbit hole goes..."

            Weegee's New York: Photographs 1935-1960

Weegee's legendary camera recorded an unmatched pictorial chronicle of a legendary time. Weegee's New York is the New York of the thirties and forties, a city marked by the Great Depression, by unemployment and poverty, by mob violence and prostitution. He was the first news photographer allowed a police radio in his car. Racing through Manhattan's streets after midnight, he often beat the cops to the scene of the crime to shoot the pictures which would scream from the pages of the Daily News and the Daily Mirror next morning. They still jump from the page with a restless immediacy and intense nervousness that has never been surpassed. The 335 photographs collected in this new softcover reprint tell the astonishing story of New York during one of its most violent and exciting periods. The introductory essay is by the former editor of Art Forum, John Coplans.

            Essay by Weegee

Weegee (1899-1968),was born Arthur Fellig in what is now a part of Poland and arrived in New York at the age of ten. During his ten years at Manhattan's police headquarters he published 5,000 photos that made him the most famous of a new breed of hardboiled news photographers. His book Naked City (later made into a film) was published in 1945, followed in 1953 by Naked Hollywood.

John Coplans, born in 1920 in England, immigrated to the US in 1960. In 1962 he founded the periodical Artforum serving as its editor until 1980. He was director of the Art Gallery of University of California at Irvine; senior curator at the Pasadena Art Museum; and director of the Akron Art Museum, Ohio. At age sixty he took up photography full-time.

            335 duotone plates.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Mister Speed Graphic.......2004-06-09

With 335 photos, this large size paperback is one of the better books you'll find of Weegee's work. Divided into eighteen photographic chapters (with one image per page) it really is an impressive selection, especially as it covers his output from 1935 to 1960.

The chapter on crime has the largest selection (thirty-one) with the predictable dead and bloodied bodies surrounded by police and public. Weegee claimed he (and several Speed Graphic cameras) covered hundreds of murders for the New York tabloids, he knew that that the only thing that mattered to the 'tabs' were the headlines and photos, the story could fill any space that was left. The other chapters cover ordinary New Yorkers in mostly nighttime settings.

The perfect complement to this book is Miles Barth's 'Weegee's World' (ISBN 0821226495) which admittedly does have many of the same photos but also has three long essays about this unique photographer. I have another book about Weegee, a very poor reproduction of his 1945 title 'Naked City' (ISBN 0306812045) and again most of the photos are in the New York book.

            Book Description

The viewing public's image of Weegee is of the prototypical New York tabloid news photographer: tough, garrulous and on the scene, ready to cover two murders in one night. But the inventive Jewish immigrant Arthur Fellig (1899-1968), who assumed the self-mocking nickname Weegee, was also one of the most original and creative photographers of the twentieth century. His work for The New York Times, the Herald Tribune, World-Telegram, Daily News, Post, Journal-American and Sun, his images of the masses at Coney Island, the confrontation of wealth and poverty at opening night at the opera, and the aftermath of brutal crime scenes are, by now, classics. But beyond the iconic images that have been so widely circulated, what do we know of Weegee the photographer--his history, his methods, his meaning? Drawing on ICP's unique archive of nearly 20,000 prints by this celebrated master, Unknown Weegee presents 120 photographs that have never been made available to the public. They reveal a politically astute and witty social critic and attest to the seriousness and self-consciousness of his photographic endeavors. With essays by Luc Sante and ICP curator Cynthia Young.

            5 out of 5 stars Hardboiled snapper.......2006-11-15

A fine book of Weegee photos though the title is somewhat misleading. The International Center of Photography has over eighteen thousand of his photos so there could easily be dozens of books with exactly the same title. Of the 111 photos in the book probably less than half were actually published and they were certainly not printed with a 175 screen on glossy paper as they are here.

The photo selection is excellent and a typical cross-section of Weegee's output, down and outs sleeping in doorways, fire and crime scenes, cops and suspects, strippers, animals, the weather, celebrities (fortunately not too many) and plenty of photos of folks just looking at some street drama. Some of these photos will really grab you, for instance, page fifty-four shows the inside of a movie house in Washington DC, with a wooden partition, seat high, running from the back to the front to segregate the white and colored audience. There surely can't be many photos that record this. The front of the book has four essays, two are contemporary and the others historical, Paul Strand's is from 1945 and Ralph Steiner wrote his in 1941. Both are interesting because to them Weegee is basically a news photographer but each recognised the creative potential in his work back then.

My only criticism is the rather sloppy editorial format. The list at the back of the book gives technical details about the 111 photos but they are not printed in the same sequence as this list so the reader has to scan through it to find out a bit of information for a particular photo. Art book publishers really should try harder.

This is a worthy addition to the books in print about Weegee, if you are new to his work check out the inexpensive 'Weegee' (ISBN 0714842249) by Kerry Purcell with fifty-five of his best photos and nicely each one has a detailed caption about the image, or try 'Weegee's New York: Photographs 1935-1960' (ISBN 3823854712) a large, beautifully printed paperback with 335 super photos.

Interpretive essays complete this comprehensive volume.

5 out of 5 stars More than just tabloid photos..........2002-07-24

Weegee is best known for his photos of "rubouts, suicides and
accident victims", but I think those photos are his
least interesting. He has a talent for capturing ordinary
life as well. His photos are warm and real. Often times I
find old photos make the subjects appear remote and distant
in time, but Weegee's photos break through that barrier.
You don't feel like you are looking at old pictures.
            His photos transcend nostalgia.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pictures Combined with Words.......2000-06-10

This wonderful book not only includes all of Weegee's (Arthur Fellig) greatest photos, but includes three in-dept essays on his work by Miles Barth, Alain Bergala and Ellen Handy. Weegee raised the craft of photojournalism to the level of art by his talent to show the essence of any situtation without any discrimination between social classes. Besides his pictures expressing the entire human condition, they also story-tell New York City circa mid-century. This is a book that is essential for anyone who wants a comprehensive photographic library.

"If it bleeds, it leads" -- the cynical battle cry of today's tabloids -- might easily have been the motto of Arthur Fellig, the freelance photojournalist better known as Weegee, who cruised the streets of 1940s New York in the wee hours of the morning in search of the sensational. His pictures of children sleeping on fire escapes, blood-splattered corpses on sidewalks and amorous couples on the beach -- as seen in this reprint of his first book -- reveal that Weegee, unlike his latter day counterparts, had heart and soul. He also had a cockeyed sense of humor, as evidenced by his captions and camera tips.

            Book Description

For Naked City, his first collection, Weegee cruised the streets of 1940s New York in the wee hours in search of the sensational. Lewd, louche, licentious but always brimming with life (except when brimming with death), Weegee's photographs have endured decades of modern art criticism and are again enjoying a much-deserved cult revival.

            Customer Reviews:

            3 out of 5 stars Big Apple's snapper.......2003-08-12

Weegee knew what kind of photos the editors of the New York daily tabloids wanted, in-your-face gutsy black and whites to capture the reader's imagination over the breakfast table. He always delivered too. This reprint of his 1945 book captures the energy of the Big Apple and yet there are no shots of skyscrapers. Instead the (mostly) ordinary folk of the city are shown getting on with their lives and deaths.

Many of the photos are taken at night, a Weegee trademark. Inside buildings he used infrared film so he could shoot in near blackness and capture his subjects displaying emotions they would hide, had they known a camera was about. Out on the street he captured the latest human tragedy in stark close-up with a blinding flash of his Speed Graphic camera.

The contents of this book are an amazing selection of photos but I was very disappointed by the reproduction, so only three stars. As far as I can tell, the photos have been scanned from the 1945 book rather than from original prints. The paper is coarse which doesn't help the reproduction either. This looks not much better than a book of photocopies. Far better I think to go for Miles Barth's 'Weegee's World' (ISBN 0821226495). Although it does not have every photo from 'Naked City', the 250 included are printed as duotones on glossy paper, I particularly like this book because it shows many photos as original un-cropped prints. For instance, in his famous photo, 'The Critic' the three bystanders to the left of the two socialites are usually cropped out but here you can see how great the original was. This book also has three excellent essays about Weegee and his influence on other photographers in the Forties.

            5 out of 5 stars How they lived...and died.......2000-02-05

A fine selection of Weegee's unposed, spontaneous vignettes of life in the city, at least, as it was in the 30's and 40's, equivalent of today's TV "fuzz and the wuzz". His accompanying commentary, unghosted and punchy, mirrors the b/w images; snappy, to the point. The paper stock used here is cheap, but then, these photos usually appeared in the morning paper...in a time when there were newspapers.

This is a superb collection of one of the best photographers that New York has seen. Brutally honest, remarkably talented, this is a great collection of his work.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of his work.......2005-10-26

An excellent book outlining about 50 of Weegee's photographs currently on display at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. I saw the exhibit today and was so impressed I picked up the book at the museum bookstore. The book organizes the pictures by subject matter rather than chronological order. He covered the harsh reality of life in New York City from the 1930's through the 1960's. Following the photographs is a short colloquium on Weegee's life.

              Book Description

"Weegee the famous," as he liked to be called, was a major influence in the field of newspaper photography. Persistent and aggressive behind the camera, he always made sure that he was at the forefront of breaking news. As a photographer he went to the heart of ugly situations to illustrate the often gruesome realities of life in the city.

Weegee's images scream at their audience. An assault to the eyes was created through his use of the flash's severe light; the harsh contrasts and deep shadows that resulted gave his images an extra jolt. Concerned more with the impact of his images than with the artistry, Weegee favored a tone of sarcasm and irony with a touch of compassion in his work.

This volume in the Masters of Photography series includes forty-one of Weegee's most powerful photographs that have an unsettling beauty, as well as the permanent power of unique images that, once seen, are never erased.

The Aperture Masters of Photography series is devoted to those individuals whose achievements have accorded them vital importance in the history of the art form. Each volume presents a selection of the artist's greatest images. Published in Aperture's standard of excellence, the Masters of Photography series provides a comprehensive library of the artists who have shaped the medium.

              5 out of 5 stars Mr Crime-and-Disaster.......2005-11-06

A very reasonably priced introduction to the work of this great photojournalist. Because his work depicts the rawness of New York life and primarily for tabloid papers I always thought the critical establishment regarded Weegee as a sideline contributor to American art photography but this book with fifty-five of his, perhaps best known, photos clearly puts him in the mainstream.

In the mid-forties after he went to Hollywood and basically stopped taking the gritty news photos he's famous for I thought his creativity declined, especially in the early fifties when Weegee played about with photo distortions (fortunately only one of these images is in the book) which seem not much more than an art student playing about.

Author Kerry Purcell writes a short introduction and the photos follow, one to a page with good captions and if you warm to these images check out 'Weegee's New York' (ISBN 3823854712) a sumptuous large size 335 page paperback. The definitive biography is by Miles Barth, 'Weegee's World' (ISBN 0821226495) again a beautifully produced book with more than 250 photos and three essays. These three books are a celebration of a great news photographer who knew what his readers wanted to see.
