What is so immediately stunning about this visual biography of one of golf's great physical masterpieces is the photography itself: it's all archival, and it's all black and white. It lends Alister MacKenzie's Cypress Point Club a deeply personal feeling. It seems to carry with it a sense of past, permanence, and inherent artistry, as if it were a valued family heirloom. In a sense, this volume is the family album of a cherished golf course, the photographic and historical record of the people who brought the course to life--including MacKenzie, the titular designer who would later coax Augusta National from the landscape, and Marion Hollins, one of the most formidable women ever to master a mashie--and how they collaborated to accomplish their ideal.

Though overshadowed by Pebble Beach, its more famous Monterey Peninsula neighbor, Cypress Point remains one of the true crown jewels in American golf. Its pedigree is second to none, and its 16th hole--a long par 3 over the ocean--is generally acclaimed as the premier one-shotter in existence. Shackelford, a prolific historian of golf course architecture and designers, spends the first third of the volume affectionately introducing us to Cypress Point's founders, its planners, the ideas that went into creating the club, and the work that went into building the course. Then he takes us through Cypress Point hole by hole, with his own informative text augmented by theoretical and site-specific insights from MacKenzie and his assistant, Robert Hunter, all gift-wrapped with stunningly dramatic photos from the 1920s and '30s.

Alister MacKenzie's Cypress Point Club is a truly lovely volume, historically fascinating and visually pleasing. To the golf-obsessed among us, the surprising story behind the birth of No. 16 should alone be worth the greens fees. But like No. 16 itself, the story is just part of an overall whole, and there's much in Cypress Point to beguile anyone who can appreciate the splendid connection between an ancient game and an environment that gorgeously elevates it. --Jeff Silverman

An excellent read, great historical pictures, this documentary of the building of Cypress Point takes one back to another era of golf deveolpment. If you are a historian of the golf course, this piece of history is a must, Geoff has done a great job of putting it together. The book is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Historic Document.......2000-12-22

If you have any interest in Alister MacKenzie's genius, or the great golf architecture of the 1920s, you must have this book. Called by many the Sistine Chapel of Golf, Cypress Point is one of the most exceptional courses on the planet. This book is an exceptional document of how it began. Magnificent full page b&ws show every hole of the early Cypress Point Club, while the text, much from the contemporaneous hand of Robert Hunter (MacKenzie's partner), tells how the course design and construction came together. Shackleford has done a wonderful service for golf historians everywhere by compiling this masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Difficult.......2007-03-25

For a neophyte, I found Transcendental Universe both enlightening and difficult. The Introduction by Christopher Bamford was extremely helpful in placing these lectures in an intelligible context, giving background to the Theosophical Society, and the history of occult mysteries in general. The first three lectures were very helpful as further instruction in occult exercises. The latter three lectures were very difficult going, covering the intricacies of the evolution of consciousness relative to the hierarchies of spiritual beings.

Well worth reading and meditating on.

    5 out of 5 stars A Treasure-Trove of 19th century Esoteric Knowledge.......2000-05-03

Mandatory reading for any serious student on the path of esoteric knowledge. Harrison illumines the reader and sets the record straight on the secrets of Spiritualism, Theosophy, secret brotherhoods etc. Christopher Bamford does a masterful job as well in the introduction to the book. Further recommended reading for advanced students of esoteric knowledge are: "ZELATOR"; "KYBALLION"; and the books of Rudolph Steiner.

When these six artists first banded together in 1917, the San Francisco art establishment found their work raw and undeveloped. According to Nancy Boas, however, these painters represent the first fully evolved reflection of modern art on the West Coast. Her scholarly and engaging study is tantamount to a discovery of a previously unknown group of painters, and it is unusual in that it recounts the birth of modern art in a nonurban setting. She elegantly and convincingly balances biography with analysis, intertwining six personal stories into a much larger story, which is really about the birth of modernism, an integral segment of America's artistic heritage. These artists' works are expressive, energetic, and ablaze with vivid color, reminiscent of a quality of rarefied light found in Richard Diebenkorn's Ocean Park series or Vincent van Gogh's Arles paintings.

    Book Description

Six plein-air painters in Oakland, California, joined together in 1917 to form an association that lasted nearly fifteen years. The Society of Six--Selden Connor Gile, Maurice Logan, William H. Clapp, August F. Gay, Bernard von Eichman, and Louis Siegriest--created a color-centered modernist idiom that shocked establishment tastes but remains the most advanced painting of its era in Northern California. Nancy Boas's well-informed and sumptuously illustrated chronicle recognizes the importance of these six painters in the history of American Post-Impressionism.
The Six found themselves in the position of an avant garde not because they set out to reject conventionality, but because they aspired to create their own indigenous modernism. While the artists were considered outsiders in their time, their work is now recognized as part of the vital and enduring lineage of American art. Depression hardship ended the Six's ascendancy, but their painterliness, use of color, and deep alliance with the land and the light became a beacon for postwar Northern California modern painters such as Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud. Combining biography and critical analysis, Nancy Boas offers a fitting tribute to the lives and exhilarating painting of the Society of Six.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Six unique artists who deserve more attention .......2007-08-06

Nancy Boas has done the American art scene a great service by producing a beautifully illustrated and printed book about six rugged individualists who did much to build a California school of painting in the early 20th Century. While they are often referred to as impressionists, their paintings are generally far more adventuresome, ambitious and challenging to the viewer than the relatively tame and accessible impressionist school. Whether they had any direct influence from the Fauvists or the Blaureider colorists, they have more in common with those post-impressionist Europeans. Ultimately, it doesn't matter much how they arrived at their approach to color and painting, it was the California landscape and climate that determined their subjects and color they used to interpret them.
Boas' handsome book does particular justice to the work of Selden Gile, who was the most aggressive and and insistent in his use of primary colors.
This is a terrific and important addition to any artbook collection.

      Book Description

This book was written for the purpose of showing what the Egyptian Masonic Rite of Memphis really is; as some of the Craft have not had the advantages of Masonic libraries, and have been made to believe that it is an innovation on the other Rites or Systems.... The Masonic order of Memphis is...the sole depository of high Masonic science, the true primitive rite, the supreme rite, that which has come down to us without any alteration.... In fine, the Rite of Memphis is the true Masonic tree, and all other systems, whatever they may be, are only detached branches of this institution, rendered respectable by its vast antiquity. This book is THE ONLY HISTORICAL WORK IN PRINT COVERING THE EVOLUTION OF THE RITE OF MEMPHIS IN THE UNITED STATES by one of its original members and leaders. It includes the complete texts of documents not obtainable elsewhere and also fascinating extracts from numerous rituals of the Rite of Memphis (including the Rose Croix) before it was abbreviated by Harry J. Seymour and/or John Yarker. Also included are the complete texts of the Forty-third Degree, Adept Installator, Forty-fourth Degree, Grand Consecrator, and Forty-fifth Degree, Grand Eulogist rituals.

3 out of 5 stars Rare book on Memphis Rite of Freemasonry.......2000-09-07

Don't bother looking elsewhere for this book, you're not likely to find it. I've found that Kessinger Publishing has many many books you won't find elsewhere.

This book offers a rare glimpse into what was going on in the obscure Memphis Rite of Freemasonry around 1870. Burt, the Grand Master of the Rite, defends retaining 96 degrees in the Memphis Rite when the French Grand Lodge wanted to reduce it to 33 degrees.

Interesting reading for those with a taste for Masonic history.

5 out of 5 stars Learn the art of basketry!.......2000-11-20

Baskets are more than a hobby to Joanna E. Schanz; they're a way of life. The Iowa native apprenticed with one of the last old-time basketmakers. Her baskets have garnered her a regional and a growing national reputation.

Joanna divides her time between basketry and running several family-owned businesses (including furniture and refinishing shops) with her husband Norman. The traditional willow basketry of the Amana Colonies, where Joanna and her family make their home, is the biggest inspiration behind Joanna's work, but she also experiments with new materials and methods of basketmaking. Lecturing and demonstrating basketry techniques at conventions and art fairs are among Joanna's many craft activities.

Her book covers the history of basketmaking in the Amana Colonies with examples shown of the historic baskets. There are about two dozen historic photographs showing baskets in use in the daily lives of the Amana people before the Great Change in 1932. There are no pre-1900 photographs showing the Amana people, let alone their basketry. The elders of the religious community did not at that time approve of photography or the decorative arts.

The Amana people did not consider baskets an art form or collectible, but rather a strictly utilitarian necessity. The photographs in this book from the 1900-32 era show that baskets were used extensively as an aid to gardening, field planting, and harvesting, as well as for picnics.

Basketmakers of today in the Amana Colonies-Joanna, Laura Kleinmeyer and Kathy Kellenberger-are featured with their willow baskets. Illustrated directions show exactly how to make six baskets. They are the round laundry basket, small oval Easter basket, oval community kitchen basket, strawberry picker, apple-picker and the Amana Colony willow basket.

A unique feature of the round basket historically created in the Colonies is the round removable base that can be replaced when worn-a solution of the thrifty German pioneers who came to the Amanas in the1850s seeking religious freedom.

This book, deservedly, is a classic. Although relatively short, it is chock-full of insights -- many of which anticipate the important work decades later by F.A. Hayek. Spencer's passion for freedom, and his understanding of the nature of politicized and depoliticized societies, was deep. This is an inspiring work.

          Product Description

This volume introduces six texts of Islamic jurisprudence, authored by six jurists representing all four Sunni schools of Islamic law (two Ḥanafī, two Shāfiʿī, one Malikī, and one Ḥanbalī), who lived in areas as far apart as Uzbekistan, Iraq, Syria, Gaza (Palestine), Egypt, and Algeria between the tenth and sixteenth centuries CE. My reading of these texts attempts to articulate an underlying structural interrelationship between theoretical and practical legal reasoning in the Islamic juristic tradition. This volume provides an anatomy of Islamic legal reasoning, centered on the basic concepts of human agency, responsibility, rights, legal hermeneutics, extra-textual sources of the law, and basic inquiries, such as the jurisdiction of law in Islam and the relationship between law and government and between law and theology.

5 out of 5 stars Grace. A Portrayal of a Beautiful Role Model both Inside and.......2004-04-13

This stunning large full color picture book keeps Grace alive, by showing her early days as an actress, her wedding to Prince of Monaco, her role as wife and mother, her visit to an orphanage, her role as Princess of Monaco, her relationship with her children, as well as Hollywood friends she missed so much.
Howell Conant brings outstanding photography, along with intimate and respectfully detailed explanations for each picture that is portrayed.

Grace has always been one of my favorite role models. Through this beautiful book you will learn that: "Grace had a special sympathy for Monaco's aged, ordering changes in the décor of the principality's only old-age home to make it cheerier. But the plight of Monaco's orphans touched her the most. Each year, she would hold a Christmas party for the children of the orphanage and give them all presents."

I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone who admired her. Barbara Rose, author of, `Individual Power' and `If God Was Like Man'

5 out of 5 stars A Touching and Playful Photographic Tribute.......1999-03-21

Howell Conant's "Grace: An Intimate Portrait by Her Friend and Favorite Photographer" is a touching, playful and elegant photographic tribute that captures the essence of the legendary Hollywood star and princess. Conant's gorgeous photographs of the late Princess Grace are enchanting and give warm insight into her career as movie star, princess and mother. Conant's personal quotes concerning Princess Grace, her family and her duties as a member of the oldest reigning royal family in europe allow a priviledged peek inside a world that was not always so different from the world outside. Each photo has a wonderful story behind it and the book, itself, is a touching tribute that depicts Grace de Monaco as far more than a former movie star and princess. It reveals the warm, nurturing, witty and sparkling human being behind the mythical "Ice Princess".

              Book Description

The adventures of real life in one hour a day. Cartoonist Robert Ullman (From the Curve, Grand Gestures) has turned the "24-Hour Comic" concept on its ear, producing a daily "journal comic" with a stringent limit of one hour per strip...the lunch hour, to be specific! Now, the best of nearly a year's worth of strips have been collected! Sometimes poignant, often silly, and always wry and engaging, Lunch Hour Comix is the art form at its most immediate and unfiltered!
