Customer Reviews:
Good but dated set of articles.......2006-02-25
This is a nice collection of articles printed in Fine Homebuilding. Most of the articles are 10+ years old at the time of this review. Because they are articles that address specific issues by a builder/craftsman/contractor they do not present a comprehensive approach to any window issue, nor do they present a survey of the field. Nonetheless, if you are looking for some practical advice there is much to be found here.
Great surprize!.......2005-09-10
I've been searching high and low for resources on making your own windows. More specifically OLD window sash. There's literally a section where the author reproduces a 200 year old window sash. Windows that old typically use plank cases, but the author just built the sash which is fine for what I needed to see. There are casement windows, arched windows and some other aspects to window construction that I haven't seen anywhere!
There are a lot of books on restoring windows, and installing windows. Which are helpful. If you're do inclined you could take apart an old window and copy it. But, I first like to get some info if I can that may explain certain things that are unique to window contruction so I can learn from someone elses experience. Now, unless you work for a sash company you're left with researching and perhaps you could take lots of pictures at Old Sturbridge village.
I'm looking at the sash router bit sets with a coping bit to construct mortise and tenon window. The problem is that they're designed to build newer windows that are 1 3/8" thick. An old window might be 1" thick. Plus, the muntins are narrow, there's no parting bead and the profile is wrong. My windows use a GREEK ogee profile, all router bits use a Roman ogee. There's a distinct difference.
You could have a sash company mill some stock or perhaps a lumber yard. I'm still stuck on trying to do it myself.
The author describes a way to grind your own router bits profiles using steel blank. I was going to go as far as making my own wooden planes or have some bits custom made.
I found this book by accident. The title doesn't give a good enough description as to what exactly this book is about. I almost past it buy as another mere installation of window book.
It wasn't until I read the previous post that I realized this was just what I needed!
Not exactly what I needed, but helped........2001-03-21
If your goal is to build windows in a new home, this is your book. I was looking for a "do it yourself" book on installing windows in an existing home, and thought this would be a good resource. Unfortunatley it wasn't what I was looking for, but I did get some benefit. I learned about what makes a good window and how to do some shopping, hence my 3 star rating. Certainly not a waste of 11 bucks.

Near worthless.......2007-04-29
The idea behind this book is great, execution was not. If this book were 300 pages it might be worth reading, but there is nothing here that you cannot learn at Home Depot.
If you know nothing about doors and windows, this might be an ok place to learn some basics, but I encountered some issues:
1. many better books out there
2. limited pictures
3. projects shown are uninspired
4. no detail (this book will NOT teach you how to install a door or window , not very well at least)
5. some really bad ideas that you just shouldn't do

Bring more light into your life!.......2000-08-15
If you're a homeowner with basic carpentry skills you will be able to add, replace, or repair nearly any kind of window or skylight if you have this book close at hand. Beginning with general design and layout suggestions and principles, the book moves swiftly to the nuts and bolts of the work itself. The text is simple and concise, the illustrations clear and well-captioned, with extensive nomenclature notations so you can speak with accuracy and authority in hardware stores and lumber yards. I just finished installing a replacement window in a very tricky location and I found that every obstacle I encountered was dealt with in this slim but information-packed volume. In addition to the useful "Ask a Pro" sidebars, there's a strong focus on safety, from the correct use of power tools to the safe handling of glass to the vitally important setting up a ladder. This manual is so clear that you'll be able to tell right away if a job is more than you can handle, but if you do have the basic skills, the confidence to try something new, and the ability to follow clear, concise explanations then this book will guide you to success. Working on windows can be tricky and frustrating, but it's enormously rewarding. If you're up for the challenge, this is definitely the book to have.

Most Useful.......2005-10-28
This was the most useful book for learning to draw birds that I have found to date. It was easy to follow, the drawings were accurate without being overly ornate, and the diversity of birds was perfect. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn to draw, and especially for those who want to draw birds.
Very good.......2003-02-05
good book. when Lee J. Ames draws with someone else it is a bit harder. still easy and fun.

Sprankle Scores Again.......2000-04-01
Jim Sprankle is a world class master waterfowl carver and painter. He has published a number of remarkable books and video tapes to help others with their carvings. This painting book is outstanding. Jim has a unique method of painting wood carvings with thinly applied washes of acrylic paints, masterfully blended. This book shows in color how he paints several species of waterfowl, step by step. He even gives the formulas for the correct mixtures of paint. The book is an invaluable source of information for anyone wishing to paint waterfowl carvings.

By Far His Best Work.......2002-04-04
This book is, by far, Steve Terrill's greatest achievement. Over a decade of photographing the most beautiful places in the state of Oregon culminated in this outstanding work. While Terrill has continued to publish many books, this one is something he will likely never match, simply because this book contained the creme de la creme of his work. With all due respect to the great Ray Atkeson, this is arguably the greatest scenic book ever published on the state. Published in the hey-day of Westcliff's state based themed books, it was a standout then. It's a real shame it's no longer in print.

Book Description
The first full-color collection of the Hi and Lois Sunday pages ever published, this 50th Anniversary retrospective includes a generous selection of recent comic strips as well as a sampling of classic masterpieces from the past. The stars of the feature—Hi, Lois, Chip, Dot, Trixie, and Dawg—provide a warm, loving portrait of a wholesome family, with traditional values and modern-day sensibilities. The cartoon strips depict everything from busy parents juggling jobs and a teen coping with self-image issues to sibling rivalry and a toddler learning about her place in the world. Childhood fantasies, nostalgia trips, seasonal strolls, summer vacations, and holiday celebrations are among the recurrent themes explored in these Sunday episodes.
Customer Reviews:
A family humor feature of distinction.......2005-05-04
Nicely printed in full color on slick paper. At least the pages are numbered, but few strips retain their original dates and many do not even have the year of copyright. I, for one, would have liked to have seen the first "Hi and Lois" Sunday reprinted, and more historic inclusions. Oh, well... Most reprinted strips seem to be from the last third of the feature's history, and several nice autumn examples are included. The strips are arranged in subject categories. For all that, "Hi and Lois" is a family humor strip which will stand up better in the long run than the more socially revelant strips which seem to dominate the newspapers today. We can only wait for a more comprehensive collection with date citations, as we do for the companion feature "Beetle Bailey." In the meanwhile, buy this book. Also recommended for public and school libraries.
