Este libro es un catalogo de los mas afamados y no tan afamados arquitectos brasileiros. Como todo catalogo nos deja con el deseo de ver mas, pero de repente para eso sirven los catalogos. Sin embargo, me deja con el vacio de entender el contexto en que se insertan todas estas obras y las practicas profesionales de quienes la producen.

The Unique Vernacular of Brazilian Baroque........2000-04-17

The enthusiasm one feels for one's so-called coffee-table books is often short lived: they tend to get loyally dusted but rarely cracked. And for scholars of any type they are virtually useless. This book on Brazilian eclesiastical architecture, however, was such an eye-opener that I can't seem to get enough of it. Although butressed by enough scholastic text to make it interesting to the serious reader, its real seductive powers lie in its crystaline photography and the eloquence of the buildings themselves.

Brazilian baroque architecture is one of the few New World styles that takes a place in the Architectural Pantheon as a sophisticated vernacular unto itself. It is not a part of the quaint adobe tradition, but rather falls in line with the great churches of the Old World. In Brazil one speaks of Portuguese colonial architecture and also of Brazilan Baroque. The speed and wealth with which Brazilian cities rose in the 17th and 18th centuries goes unparalleled in North America. The Portuguese turned the sugarcane cities of the North, Salvador and Recife, and the gold-trafficking cities of the South, Ouro Preto and Rio de Jeneiro, from backwaters and fortresses into worldly cities. The nobles, the wealthy bourgeoisie, and the church orders all vied to bring the "best" of their baroque civilization to the New World; and succeed mightily they did. The rhetorical message of wealth conveyed by the Church's "gilded grottoes" is irrefutable. To such a degree that Salvador today is rightly called "Roma Negra": Black Rome.

The grave and crisp book format is buoyed by the reverent photography of Günter Heil. Rarely is architecture afforded such loving attention. One only wishes there was more, seeing that some of the photographs were aparently chosen for their artistic merits above the illustrative, as seen in the one photo of the most remarkable façade in Salvador, the Church of the Third Order of São Francisco: one of the few traces of late Mannerism in the New World, the photo of which is blocked by the raked silhouette of a portal. The fact that the book leaves, literally, so much to be desired is not at all a shortcoming, rather proof of its seduction. This is true of the text as well. One longs for more anecdotes from the history of the great architects or the slaves and natives who built these wonders. European and North American readers who have taken it for granted that the story and soul of the Baroque resides in Europe only, will be vainly curious for more information on such Brazilian cultural heros as the mulato sculptor and architect Aleijadinho, nicknamed "the Cripple", or the painter of the ceiling of the Cathedral Church in Salvador, the Franco-Chinese artist Wei-Kia-Lou (Charles Belville).

there was a bunch little kids,
who lived a happy life
until their musles grew too big.

Then they got these powers,
they became so strong.
I hate ever so much,
that I went and wrote this song.

why they wanted to be so tough,
but one thing is for sure,
they are way, way, WAY too rough!

A Piece of Brilliance in Your Hand Part 2.......2004-09-20

Just because most reviews are by kids doesn't mean this is a kiddie comic. The artwork, storyline, and violence is all a treat. Read Vols. 1-4 first, and then read this one. For a more detailed review read my editorial for DBZ Vol. 1, "This is a masterpiece"

A Piece of Brilliance in Your Hand.......2004-08-24

This graphic novel is quite enjoyable. As a matter of fact, these graphic novels are better than the television series because this is how Dragon Ball* was meant to be seen. In this edition, the Z senshi is exhausted by The Saiyan. After he flees, they all recuperate(the survivors)and head off in a space ship to Planet Namek to use the Nameksei-jun dragon balls to wish back their dead friends (Earth's dragon balls were destroyed with Piccolo's death). But there are others who seek the balls, and they use more "unfriendly" tactics.

*There was no Dragon Ball "Z", it was all Dragon Ball. Where it says #5 on the cover, under it says DB 21 of 42.

Shonen Jump makes good Dragonball!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-04-20

This book totally rocks! It's not quite as good as no. 4, but hey, it's still worth five stars! In it, Kuririn, Son Gohan, and Bulma go out in a spaceship to find planet Namek. Their friends Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Piccolo Daimao died in a brutal battle against the Saiyans Nappa, and Vegeta. They are going to get the Namek Dragonballs to wish their friends back to life because he Earth ones disappeared when Piccolo died. One thing went wrong though. Vegeta, who escaped Earth vowing evenge on Son Goku, is also there trying to get Dragonballs. If that's not bad enough, the evil emperor Freeza and his gang are also there. Think that's the worst that could happen, the ship breaks down. Something good happens but I wont say what. Just to tell you, the pricing on these Shonen Jump editions is much better than the Viz editions. The layout is alout cooler too! A very good product in all.

In the aftermath of his titanic battle with Goku, Vegeta retreats from Earth, vowing revenge. In search of a way to resurrect their dead friends, Kuririn, Gohan, and Bulma repair an ancient alien spaceship and go into space in search of Namek-- Piccolo's home planet where the wish-granting Dragon Balls were originally made. But Namek has become a battleground, where evil emperor Freeza and his minions are slaughtering the peaceful Namekians to fulfill Freeza's wish for immortality! Stranded on a planet full of enemies, the three astronauts radio back to Earth begging for a hospitalized Goku to come to their aid--but "help" comes from an unexpected source as Vegeta, now stronger than ever, turns against his former master Freeza in order to get the Dragon Balls for himself. But are Vegeta's intentions any less evil than Freeza's?
