If you love chandeliers, flowing draperies, and bric-a-brac--if you believe you were a Roman senator, a Gothic queen, or Madame de Pompadour in an earlier life or have fantasies of La Belle Époque or the Golden Age of Hollywood--The Paris Apartment is the decorating book for you. Claudia Strasser includes before-and-after pictures of real people's apartments, transformed from dark cracker boxes to intriguing showplaces. She gives shopping tips on finding the best furniture, how-to instructions on distressing and painting your flea-market finds, and ideas for choosing the period and colors that best suit your personality. Best of all, Strasser estimates the average cost of a no-holds-barred transformation to be $1,800 for an entire apartment, including furniture--less if you already have the furniture, are clever with your hands, are somewhat restrained in your taste, or live near the best flea markets. The Paris Apartment is the perfect combination of inspiration and instruction for budget-conscious glamour mavens on a budget.

Book Description

The Paris Apartment is a popular shop in New York's East Village, where visitors can step back in time and immerse themselves in the beauty and romance of antique furnishings. Reflecting an unusual mix of design influences (Baroque, rococo, neoclassical and Art Deco) and personal taste, its style is luxurious, playful, and wholly original.

In The Paris Apartment, Claudia Strasser, the founder and owner of the shop, offers readers the quintessential guide to achieving this romantic Parisian look without having to spend a fortune. With easy-to-follow instructions and helpful advice, she shows readers how they can transform their homes into a living environment that reflects both their personal style and timeless French elegance. Laid out in the form of an entertaining diary, the book helps Francophiles define their fantasy home, find inspiration, select a color palette and use light creatively. She also includes instructions for making canopies and valances; advice on dyeing fabrics and restyling furniture; tips on budgeting; guidance on shopping at flea markets and auctions; and a glossary of terms. Color photographs throughout illustrate the ideas and techniques shown in the book.

As interest in the home experiences a resurgence, and as Americans become more careful about their spending, nesting has become the pastime of the '90s. People want luxury homes without spending a fortune. With its unbeatable combination of style and solid practicality, The Paris Apartment  is a home-decorating guide to treasure and draw inspiration from for many years to come.

1 out of 5 stars Of no value.......2007-04-03

This book has no interest for someone interested in decorating. Very boring, not enough photos. A real vanity book.

2 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2007-03-31

this has been on my want list for a year or more, and I finally found a copy at my library. I am SO glad I didn't buy this. It is way, way too overdone for my taste, and in no way does it reflect any element of french style that I've seen. I'd consider myself a francophile, but even Versailles looks restrained in comparison to Strasser's layers upon layers upon layers. I'd hate to clean in any of these rooms. There are some good ideas, like the rinceau treatment of the warehouse room turned parlor, but they were largely hidden under swaths of satin and clutter. I'd hoped for more depictions of true french designs.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it! Don't Miss the Best Tip..........2007-01-19

I loved this book and have shared my copy more than I can remember so now I just purchase them for my good girlfriends. Beyond the practical 'how tos'' for any budget, I love the greater message that Ms. Stasser reveals. Each of us can create a beautiful, decadent, relaxing area for ourselves. I chose my bathroom tub(I did the beading), a freestanding vanity (that I ventured to the flea market for!) and a private telephone area for just me with an old fahioned telephone table and comfy chair and cuddly chenille throw. Each area has a few very beautiful trickets, smells great and has lush fabrics. My kids prohibit the truly frenchie from existing anywhere else. But, I bought some french cds and the kids listen to them in the car! I LOVE my spaces - they are transcenant - truly. I have my piece of The Paris Apartment.

The photos in this book are artistic, but not informative or helpful. Lots of text on basic design pricipals--so no new information. Basic pictures--and more of them--would have saved this book.

NOT AT ALL WHAT I EXPECTED. THE WEBSITE IS MORE INFORMATIVE THAN THE BOOK. I VISITED THE BOUTIQUE AND HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE. EVERYTHING IN THERE IS BEAUTIFUL. HIGHLY RECOMMEND A VISIT BUT THE BOOK IS A TERRIBLE WASTE OF MONEY.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource!.......2001-05-22

This book met a lot of my expectations by being very portable, very well-illustrated, and full of good descriptions of the merchandise one is likely to find in London and Paris flea markets. "Antiquing" is a very visual experience for me, and having plenty of photographs to whet my appetite for the various shops was a real plus. The book was useful too in helping me plot which days to attend which markets. Even if the merchandise changes and vendors sometimes move, there is enough general information that stays constant for this to be a useful guide for several years. The two-for-one format--London and Paris in one book--is also fun. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the maps could have been better. Otherwise, a great resource!

4 out of 5 stars Adventurous Shopper's Delight!.......2000-10-26

Antique and Flea Markets of London and Paris is a book serious shoppers will love. While spending several summer months in London, I have visited a number of the markets described. The authors are right on target, and the photos are enjoyable. I learned about many features I've missed, and read about several new places to try on the next trip. The book realizes that shoppers are people, not machines, and tells a little about the market's surrounding area, especially places to stop for a snack and a rest.

I'm not as familiar with Paris, but if the Paris section is even close to being as accurate and useful as the London section, it will save shopping time and hassle across the channel, as it will in London.

This is not "the" book for your trip if you need a complete guide book. If you like antiques and markets, however, you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Special Retreat.......2000-05-03

As a collector of decorating books, I found this fresh and exciting! Although I can't afford a giant plaster head, the use of color, objets d'art, antiques and everday found objects lends itself to immediate inspiration. Tres European, tres chic! My favorite section is the apartment left untouched by the 2oth c. It is so rare to catch a glimpse of an actual abode left intact from so long ago. Inspiration can be taken from many different sources such as a unique fabric, even something as mundane as peice of cardboard. This book is a treat creatively and visually. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous french interiors.......2000-04-07

This softcover is full of gorgeous home furnishings sourced from flea markets presumably from France. It is more of a pictorial study of lovely furniture, room layouts, antique details, drapery and linens rather than a 'how to guide' to furnishing a home in this style - it is provides some inspirational ideas for decorating and thoughts on furnishings and color combinations - although some furnishings and abodes are a little out of reach for most of us (the essential paris apartment with french doors, parqued floors and mammoth marble busts) it is fabulous to look at it and is a nice coffee table addition. Enjoy.

        Book Description

Pedaling a bicycle around the world was a lifelong dream, but everyone told him it could not be done. Dismissing the skeptics, disinterested sponsors, and a woefully inadequate bank account, Scott Zamek resolved to try. Some 20,000 miles and millions of pedal revolutions later, Zamek had encountered Bengal tigers, angry mobs, prison and sandstorms. He had run up against the Sahara and Gobi deserts, the Himalaya and the Karakoram mountains. He had suffered hypothermia and heatstroke. And it was in his moments of greatest need, good Samaritans intervened to help.

"One More Horizon" takes us on a roller coaster ride of endurance and fatigue, success and setback, thieves and kindhearted souls. But what shines through in the end, is a reminder of all that is right with the human spirit.

        5 out of 5 stars A MAGIC CARPET.......2004-03-02

SCOTT ZEMEK HAS WRITTEN A MOST EXHILARATING TRAVELOGUE OF HIS EXPERIENCES IN EUROPE AND ASIA. THE BOOK KEPT ME GOING AND ALWAYS WONDERING WHAT NEXT PITFALL, ADVENTURE AND NEW ACQUAINTENCE WOULD POP UP NEXT. IT WAS LIKE SITTING ON A MAGIC CARPET AND BEING TAKEN HALF WAY AROUND THE WORLD AND VICARIOUSLY LIVING HIS ADVENTURES. ANYONE CONTEMPLATING OR EVEN IMAGINING A BEAR BONES TRIP LIKE THIS ON A BIKE CALLED PAPILLON WILL BE WELL FORWARNED AND AT THE SAME TIME ENTICED.

I FOUND THE BOOK EASY READING AND AS IF SCOTT AND I HAD BEEN GOOD FRIENDS FOR YEARS. I CAN HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT AS A FASCINATING AND VERY DIFFERENT READING EXPERIENCE.

5 out of 5 stars Spanning 35 countries and two years.......2004-02-06

One More Horizon: Ohio To Hong Kong The Long Way is author Scott Zamek's personal reminiscence of his 20,000 mile journey around the world by bicycle. Spanning 35 countries and two years, the bicycle odyssey was not an easy one - the author survived being taken prisoner by the Syrian Secret Police, was stranded in a Pakistani immigration camp, and suffered a hepatitis affliction in China among his several trip-related traumas. Yet Zamek also achieved an immeasurable breadth and depth of experience in people, customs, cultures, and the chance to see the truly majestic beauty of nature, whether in the Sahara and Gobi deserts, or while traversing the two largest mountain chains in the world. One More Horizon is a powerful and involving testimonial for armchair travelers or especially those contemplating actually setting out to see the world the hard way.

        5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down........2004-01-30

I sat down today to start to read a little of Scott's book, well I finished it. Scott's acute awareness of his surroundings comes through beautifully in his storytelling. I couldn't put it down... seriously!

I was utterly impressed and jealous at how he was able to continue on such a monumentous adventure no matter what was thrown his way. The wonderful descriptions of his interactions with the people and lands he encounters are priceless.

If you are a fan of the travel adventure genre you are going to love this one! Thanks for the journey Scott!

4 out of 5 stars "Adventure for the Soul".......2003-12-29

This is the writing of a man's journey on a bicycle, "around the world"! WHEW! Scott Zamek is a man filled with will and determination as he rides from Ohio to Hong Kong. He is faced with many challanges that this world has to offer. It wasn't just the journey that he takes you on with him, it is the soulful way he describes his adventure. I found myself laughing and crying. I couldn't wait to read whole book. If you can't put it down, why read it! I felt as if I was watching a fabulous movie, which was filled with adventure, grit, guts, and what a cyclists challenges are on a journey of this nature. I can't wait to read Scott's next book!

        4 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......2003-12-27

If you are an adventurer, read "One More Horizon." Subtitled "Ohio to Hong Kong the Long Way," it is the captivating story of a lone cyclist's exceptional adventure. If you are interested in peaks and valleys, literal or figurative, you will find a plethora of each. If you travel in comfort, read about what you are missing. You may not want to emulate Scott Zamek, but his point of view will shed light on your own. If you believe truth is stranger than fiction, or the opposite, read this book. Philosophy, lodging tips, gourmet treats, poetry, geography, cycling--what more could you ask for?

          Book Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on way-type unit head machines and other machine tools for drilling and boring metal in Hong Kong face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying way-type unit head machines and other machine tools for drilling and boring metal to Hong Kong? How important is Hong Kong compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of way-type unit head machines and other machine tools for drilling and boring metal vary from one country of origin to another in Hong Kong? On the supply side, Hong Kong also exports way-type unit head machines and other machine tools for drilling and boring metal. Which countries receive the most exports from Hong Kong? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for way-type unit head machines and other machine tools for drilling and boring metal in Hong Kong. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for way-type unit head machines and other machine tools for drilling and boring metal for those countries serving Hong Kong via exports, or supplying from Hong Kong via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Hong Kong fits into the world market for imported and exported way-type unit head machines and other machine tools for drilling and boring metal. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Hong Kong in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Hong Kong is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Hong Kong compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.
