Book Description
Focusing on a plan for an extension to the University of Oregon, this book shows how any community the size of a university or small town might go about designing its own future environment with all members of the community participating personally or by representation. It is a brilliant companion volume to A Pattern Language.

Short summary of the important stuff, mistakes to learn from.......2004-08-28
The good news is that this book is a short summary of what most people
will find important when they apply patterns either in the field of architecture
or in their own field of design. It provides insight into Alexander's theory
of economics--a stance which caused him to be unfavorably labeled as a
socialist when these ideas were taking form.
Patterns, in this book, are almost a footnote to the broader ideas of
design, of economics, and of socially coordinated construction that
form the core of Alexander's exposition here. The economics form a
compelling argument for a process of piecemeal growth. Alexander gives
practical advice on how to administer the social process, including the
creation of a community pattern board that oversees the introduction of
new patterns into the community language, and the retirement of old
ones. By putting the pattern mantra aside, this book helps the reader
get beyond the point where they are looking for patterns in their own right
to provide the answer to every design question, and pushes the reader
to think at the level of the foundations.
The bad news is that the book takes the reader into a couple of miscues.
Alexander would later bitterly recant the role this book accords to the
architect. Architects should be master builders rather than the font of
design ideas. The architecture role emerged in the Oregon Experiment
to lend the project an air of conventionality and credibility, a compromise
that kept the project from achieving its goals.
Current tidbits of retrospective literature try to make sense of the experiment;
some claim it succeeded (in spite of those aspects Alexander felt were
wrong-headed) and some claim it failed. Grabow's biography of
Alexander (Christopher Alexander: The Search for a New Paradigm in
Architecture) features some choice words about the miscues in this
experiment. Taken with the retrospective Grabow brings us, this book
provides a perspective on patterns that is completely absent from the
other books in this series. Some of these, such as the foundations in
economics, are there for the picking. To reap some of the other insights
requires study that goes beyond casual reading, but such study is
appropriate to the depth of insight it will afford, and you owe it to
yourself to explore it. These insights are crucial for making patterns
work in a practical way in a social setting.
If you want to learn about patterns, and you want to start with an
Alexandrian book, I think this is the one you start with. Get the big
picture first, in the context of the underlying principles, and come
back for the pattern details later in A Pattern Language, and for the
artist's artistic exposition of his art in The Timeless Way of Building.
An inspiring proposal.......2004-08-23
The Oregon Experiment comes from a time when Eugene, Oregon was a capital for social and community experiments in the US. It's a practical, brilliant, gentle, idealistic proposal, without peer in modern literature. There are a few papers on the experiment after twenty years, available on the web -- the experiment basically had the life bureaucratized out of it. But this book remains as a shining, solid proposal, which any participatory experiment should look over very closely.
Building an educational community.......2001-05-11
The Oregon Experiment is one of a series of influential volumes on architecture and social design published by Christopher Alexander and his colleagues in the 1970s. While the most well-known volume in the series, A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, and Construction, develops general principles for the design of social spaces at all scales, The Oregon Experiment applies those principles to a specific case: the campus of the University of Oregon.
If you are looking for an example of a specific campus plan, however, you will not find it here. Central to Alexander's approach is the notion that communities should not create fixed master plans, but rather should develop a common pattern language, and then apply it organically, in a piecemeal fashion, as needs arise. The book talks as much about this process of planning as it does about individual construction projects. Whenever a need arises (expansion of a building, addition of a door, creation of a green) people consult their pattern language and build something to suit the space and satisfy the need. Because everyone follows the agreed-upon language, the new parts harmonize with those that already exist (or replace earlier, poorly-designed structures).
If you have enjoyed studying Alexander's patterns in A Pattern Language, you will find here a collection of new ones that are specific to a university setting, including "University Population," "University Shape and Diameter," "Departments of 400," "Local Administration," "Classroom Distribution," and about a dozen more. Although he clearly draws on ideas from British universities in many cases, he unaccountably does not include one of the fundamental features of the British model, namely the residential college of 500 (or so) within the larger institution. (Although he does include aspects of this pattern under the heading "Small Student Unions.") As always, Alexander's pattern descriptions are clear, blunt, and thought-provoking.
The question that most readers will want to have answered is, "Does all this really work?" When the volume was written, of course, the process was just getting under way, and so we cannot know from this book alone whether everything described was successful or has been sustained over the long term. From what I've seen of campus master planning in public universities, it often turns out in the end to have less to do with creating good educational environments than it does with kowtowing to the local chamber of commerce and lining the pockets of already-rich trustees. But just because something is difficult doesn't mean it shouldn't be made the goal. If Alexander or someone at the University of Oregon were to produce a sequel, "The Oregon Experiment 25 Years On," I'm sure it would meet with a warm reception.
A frustrating piece of vapourware.......2000-08-02
As a software designer and as somebody who lives and works in buildings in cities, I find the ideas in some of Alexander's other books on architecture and design - The Timeless Way of Building and A Pattern Language - very interesting and appealing. They are a brave attempt to point to a more human, community-oriented way of doing things.
I had high hopes that The Oregon Experiment would describe a concrete example of whether these ideas worked when they were put into practice. It does nothing of the kind. It describes an interesting thought experiment in participatory design and tries to present this as a vindication of the Pattern Language concepts. But nowhere does it even mention whether the design it describes was ever actually implemented, much less whether it worked from the inhabitants' point of view.
It is very easy for a design team to get carried away with what a great design they have on paper. I've done it loads of times. That enthusiasm tells us nothing about whether a design is actually going to be a success.
I know Alexander later moved from academia and started trying to put his ideas into practice on actual building projects. A book on his real experiences and how well the original ideas stood up to the cold light of reality would be fascinating and important. The Oregon Experiment isn't that book.

"A Bunch" maybe....but hardly "The Best".......2006-04-25
Reading that this is a collection of photographs of dolls in a Barbie museum, I was immediately excited. I expected to see photos of mint, museum-quality dolls. To my horror, when I received the book I discovered that what it contains is not museum quality but mediocre quality (at best). To have a full-page glossy color photo of a doll with an incorrect hairstyle and rubbed, flaking face paint is downright criminal! (Where are the Barbie police when you need them!) And to another reviewer's assertion that this will give you a better understanding of levels of grading, that would only be true if there was any acknowledgement that these dolls aren't mint. To me this is the most egregious error -- tha nowhere is there any indication that these dolls are anything less than perfect examples. After all, they're in a museum, aren't they?
There are many books with glorious photos of mint Barbies. This is not one of them. There are also great books with detailed descriptions of how to grade a Barbie. This is also not one of those. If you know what a mint Barbie is supposed to look like, you'll just find this book sad. If you don't, don't mistakenly think you'll learn anything from this book -- except possibly how to make a quick buck off a bunch of unsuspecting collectors.
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING............2004-06-13
As a collector of vintage Barbie,(with an extensive supply of most Barbie reference books), I was thoroughly disgusted at not only the author, photographer and editor, but publishers need to reevaluate whether 'greed' will bring more customers back to them in the future. Most publishers are well aware that publishing a reference book on vintage barbie will MAKE THEM MONEY and more than likely bring out the masses who are looking for a good reference book, but lying about the contents and writing a glowing review on the book, when it isn't, won't bring us back a 2nd time. (You may pocket our money once, but not twice). The book was a mess from beginning to end. The history of the doll and identification was marginal at best, and at worst, just plain INACCURATE. Grammar and sentence structure was grade school at times. The photos were bizarre and scary, (not something, I would want an aquaintance to pick up and look through) if it was on my coffe table... There are a lot of Barbie reference and collecting books out there, steer clear of this one, especially if you're just beginning to delve into the vintage dolls, you'll be turned off real quick.
Excellent text and photos.......2002-03-04
I disagree with another reviewer that all photos should be of mint dolls. This book captures a wide range of Barbie's -- both through the years and through various conditions. As a collector, I find it helpful to see the less-than-perfect dolls. It gives me a far better understanding of different levels of grading. If you are a serious Barbie collector, I feel this book is a "must-have" in your library.
These dolls are hardly the BEST of Barbie. :(.......2002-03-02
First off, potential buyers should be aware that this is a coffee table book and definitely not useful in any way for identification purposes.
Most Barbie books have hundreds or even thousands of color photos but the quality isn't exactly award-winning. Photos are often badly lit, too small, or even grainy. So it was with great joy that I opened this book and saw large full page stunning color photographs of vintage dolls.
Unfortunately my joy was quickly dampened as I noticed that somebody forgot to hire a stylist for the dolls. The photos are so magnified and clear that it's impossible to ignore the flaking face paint, the messy hair, and the stained clothing. "The BEST of Barbie" ??? Not by a long shot!
I am thankful this book was a Christmas gift and I did not shell out money myself for it. It is SO disappointing to see crystal clear photographs of vintage dolls in a Barbie book only to have those photos ruined by dolls in crummy condition. Apparently all the dolls pictured in the book were culled from one collection. I'd hate to see the dolls that didn't make the cut!
I am not a doll snob (I buy dolls from the Goodwill and fix them up myself) but if a book calls itself "The BEST of Barbie" then I expect to see mint dolls in crisp clean outfits.
Definitely Not "the best of Barbie".......2002-02-03
While this book has some interesting photos from this one collection, it has photographs of anything but the "best" examples of the various Barbies--especially the vintage dolls--some of them are down-right scarey looking with running, gouged face paint, chopped off hair, examples of ponytail dolls without ponytails, mis-identified dolls and a hodge-podge of information and misinformation. If I were a new collector, this book would be of little help in learning what a particular doll should look like--it's easy to find played-with dolls that are all mussed up--the hard part for a new collector is knowing what the doll should look like when learning to gauge authenticity and condition--this book seems like someone was assigned to write a Barbie book and they did it--but that someone was not a collector or authority.

DIGITAL INFRARED MUST HAVE !!!.......2007-08-24
ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS TO DATE. PATRICK REALLY HAS THE KNOWLEDGE ON THIS BEAUTIFUL DREAMLIKE PHOTGRAPHY. I HAVE LEARNED ALOT OF USEFUL INFORMATION FROM THIS BOOK AND EVEN BOUGHT A MODIFIED COOLPIX TO SHOOT INFRARED ON 4 MYSELF.
Great Book!.......2007-08-04
This book is a great book to get alongside "The Complete Guide to Digital Infrared Photography". Both books compliment each other. The book is full of great Ideas and information.
one of few resources.......2007-05-07
There are not many options for those of us interested in infrared photography. Found much invaluable reference material. Also purchased Complete Guide to Digital Infrared Photography by Joe Farace which made a good companion book.
Very Good Overview.......2007-03-09
Digital Infrared Photography by Patrick Rice is a good overview on the topic, but if you ware wanting an in depth understanding of infrared photography, you are going to have to buy more than this book. As a new eye to the art of infrared photography this book provided me with just enough answers to get started with my camera (though I was disappointed with the lack of discussion on DSLRs)and a good outline to head towards the web to find more information. This is not a book I regret having in my library.
Not quite what I had hoped for.......2006-12-31
The book has some lovely images, and it is true that looking at great images will help improve your skills.
I was disappointed, however, and primarily because the title led me to believe that it was a professional-level book about infrared techniques. In actuality, it gives a cursory introduction to a narrow swath of ideas about infrared. If you are interested in using infrared in wedding photography, this is a terrific book, as about half of the images are of weddings.
What I didn't learn was how infrared technique differed from traditional digital. What of histograms readings? Photoshop work? or how to adjust the sometimes odd result from the camera into a beautiful print.
In the slim, 123-page book, the author presents a history of infrared, film photography with infrared, the difference between film and digital, and info about cameras and lenses. This takes you to page 64. The next chapter -- finally -- is "Shooting Techniques," pages 65-78. This chapter has fifteen images associated with it, twelve of which are wedding photographs. The remainder of the book is dedicated to how "infrared sees" and -- you guessed it -- a chapter on weddings. That means, pages 65-78 include the "professional techniques." These are items such as the need for longer exposures when using a filter (duh), and that you can use the manual RGB or B&W setting on the camera (making a correction that otherwise would have been done in Photoshop, and with more control.) His reasoning for shooting in RGB? A wedding couple loved the "edgy look" on the camera's screen. Might there be a technical reason?
So, sadly, I didn't learn anything I hadn't already gleaned from a quick trip around the Internet. On the other hand, if you want to learn about digital infrared wedding photography, this would be a great choice. Took bad that wasn't what was advertised.

A Waste of Money.......2007-05-09
I have 3 digital infrared converted cameras. I'm always looking for hints on shooting and especially on how better to process images in Photoshop. This is the 4th edition, and dates back to 1998 (shame on me for not checking closer). There are exactly 2 pages on Infrared Digital cameras (none I have ever heard of). If you want to shoot infrared film, this book is still very dated. The last 2/3 of the book consist of infrared images from the author's portfolio. I was enticed by the glowing reviews, but found the book totally useless for my needs.
Great Infrared Film Book.......2006-03-10
This is one of the finest books on using infrared film ever written. The pictures are breathtaking and the technical information is useful. This is a must-have book for any infrared enthusiast.
ABSOLUTELY ENCHANTING PHOTOS AND EXCELLENT TEXT.......2006-02-14
I MUST SAY THAT MR. PADUANO IS OF COURSE AN EXPERT ON INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY AND IS ONE OF THE FOREMOST PHOTOGRAPHERS IN HIS FIELD.ALL THE IMAGES IN THE PORTFOLIO SECTION OF THIS BOOK ARE SUITABLE FOR FRAMING. I FIND MYSELF LOOKING AT THEM OVER AND OVER AGAIN. DREAMY AND DRAMATIC IMAGES THAT ARE BREATHTAKING. THE TEXT IS WRITTEN IN EASY TO UNDERSTAND LANGUAGE WHICH ALLOWS ANY PHOTOGRAPHER TO APPLY MR. PADUANO'S TECHNIQUE QUICKLY TO THEIR OWN STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY, USING INFRARED FILM. A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO IS SERIOUS ABOUT USING THIS SPECIALIZED FILM.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Mr Paduano needs to learn how to take Infrared pictures.......2005-11-15
Yes, I know I sound cruel, but I just received his book, and of the 104 pages, there are 57 pages of some pretty sad looking infrared photos.
No, I have not begun to read the book, but how could I follow his instructions when I can see that I simply don't like his infrared photos.
AND, the reason I purchased his book was all the GREAT reviews it received.
Listen, maybe I'm wrong about his photos. I'm no photographer, so what do I know?....
And, yes, I'm real sorry I bought his book...
EXCELLENT BOOK ON INFRARED .......2004-12-03
This book has now become my primer on infrared photography. What a well written and photographed book. Mr. Paduano's book has been in print now for 20 years and it is easy to see why.He truly is a master of this medium. The text is well written, thorough and easy to follow.Detailed text and images are contained in this edition. Covers black and white as well as color infrared. Chapters on filters, exposure and printing take the guess work out of this mysterious film. The infrared images are superb! The author updates each priniting of the book to keep it current also. If you own just one book on infrared, this is the book to own.A true delight.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference.......2006-04-20
I see in a few reviews here how they talk about the book being too technical. It seems that if you are a advanced enough photographer to be loading CIR into your camera, it should be safe to say that you dont need to be told how to take pictures. This guide tells you how the film reacts to different situations. The creativity is up to you and thats the way it should be. I do however agree that the author could have gone a little more in depth about the filter usage & CIR, but its a fine refrence overall. There is very little written about this film and this book fills a lot of the gaps.
The Book on Color Infrared Photography.......2006-03-13
This is truly the only book devoted just to color infrared film photography. The author takes great care in explaining how this film works and how to best utilize it's potential. The images are intriguing and unusual. I found it to be a great addition to my library of photography texts.
A Good Place to Start.......2003-01-30
Mr. Begleiter's The Art of Color Infrared Photography seems to be the only book on the subject of color infrared photography that is currently on the market, so if you are looking for guidance on the subject, this is it. The good news is that this book does do a good job of providing enough information to get you off to a good start. You will be confident that you know what you are doing the first time you load a roll of Kodak CIR film into your camera. The book covers all of the topics essential to infrared photography, such as: the physics of infrared light, how the film works, film handling, processing, pushing/pulling, using filters, focusing and various light sources. I give the book only 4 stars because it is not what I would call comprehensive. I wish some of the above topics had been covered in more detail and with more examples. There is only one example of using a yellow filter vs an orange filter, and no examples of doing this under different types of light. Filters are rather essential to IR photography, and I would have liked to see them treated in more depth. There is mention of the alternative AR-5 process for developing the film, but there is only one example of that, too. It peaked my interest, but I couldn't find out more. There is no information on cross-processing color IR film as a negative, which I know some people do. Mr. Begleiter probably doesn't cross-process his film, but some information on the subject would be nice. A little color IR goes a long way, but this book does showcase some nice examples of subjects for which color IR is actually appropriate and attractive, which is helpful and encouraging. All in all, this book not perfect, but it is a worthy addition to the library of any photographer.
Begleiter is a Genius!.......2002-06-07
If you are interested in adding some zest to your color photography, this book will lead the way. The images in this book are goregeous and the descriptions on how to create images of your own are excellent! I highly recommend purchasing this book!
Mixed feelings on this book.......2002-04-12
I just bought this book recently, and while I think it might be a useful technical reference, it gives little new insight into the possibilities of CIR film. Charts and graphs are all well and good, but I don't find them terribly helpful. Mr. Begleiter also gives very little information on color filters other than Wratten 12Y and seems to use only that filter except for the one image taken with an orange filter. I would've liked to see more exploration into the color results from different filters other than yellow. Don't get me wrong, there is useful information in this book, primarily the information on filters to correct for tungsten or fluorescent light and what happens to the film when it is outdated. This book, however, should not be the only book you read on infrared photography. This book could work as a companion piece to Joseph Paduano's "The Art of Infrared Photography", which provides more information on which color filters to use to get certain color results. The two together would make a fairly complete course in IR photography. Begleiter's book is good on a very technical level, though I think it would be more helpful to see actual images made with different conditions and exposures instead of graphs or at least in addition to the graphs.

Book Description
This book is designed so a deeper understanding and appreciation of infrared by the general public as well as by the experienced photographer is achieved. As a so called coffee table book it serves the dual purposes of simultaneously referencing both fine art and infrared black and white photography. :While some books on infrared are available they dwell on instruction and utilize a do it yourself approach for those interested in learning and shooting. On the other hand, this is designed to be appreciated solely for its content. Nature Photography is the opening theme followed by photos with structures both old and contemporary. The final section of the book contains photos with people some of which could be considered Street Photography. The viewer will enjoy viewing the different subjects as well as the unique characteristics of infrared photography.

A comprehensive guide to the use of black & white infrared film
Customer Reviews:
The definitive guide to infrared photography.......2003-02-01
This book, the most comprehensive reference work on infrared photography, is unfortunately out of print. There's more solid information in this book than in all the pretty coffee-table books on IR photography put together.
Even the most recent edition, 1978, has some outdated data on specific films, but the laws of physics haven't changed, so Gibson's extremely detailed explanations of various phenomena and applications of infrared photography are still as valid as they were originally.
This book really cries out for a new edition, updated with information on digital infrared photography. But for now, if you can only have one book on infrared, this is the one to get.

Book Description
This is the story of a loser, a stripper, a drug lord, and a spider. It's urban crime noir, it's a fairy tale, it's mythology. It's also the story of a mother who went through a lot in life, a woman who gained and lost, hated and loved, but never once gave up on life. Deep inside, she was golden, and her inner strength ultimately set her free. No matter what bonds hold a person back, be it a bad marriage, prison, a small town, or a gang-infested city, there's always a way. The story of Anansi is an African folk tale, told by people who songs and stories carried the spirits of men and women throughout the centuries through good times and bad.
Customer Reviews:
The story description is wrong.......2005-09-17
its not the story of a mother at all...in fact the action centers very much around a male ex-con who gets involved in events that spiral out of control between betrayals, chance encounters, and extreme brutality. The urban setting is appropriately gritty to contrast the flashbacks the main character has. There is some unique characterization as well as surprising twists.
It is as you can tell very much for a mature audience...
As for the Amazon description..heh..well its not the first time a description here has been completely off the mark.
