Design Your Loft.......2007-04-04
Need some ideas for your loft apartment? This book is full of great decorating plans you can put into action.
Our New Loft.......2007-02-16
After moving into our new loft in the Pearl District I realized it needed a new "do". It didn't feel right until I did alot of research and made major changes. The New City Home, coupled with a few others fueled the idea bank we now have the place we feel is really US. Nice presentation and beat the expense of an interior designer. After living in the burbs for so long, we feel like we're on vacation everyday.
Outstanding Book for the Modern Loft Dweller.......2006-03-11
My dream is to own a loft one day and I have been to open house tours and read many books about this subject. I have a very defined taste, concerning how I want a loft to look and how I want to decorate my loft. I have a very contemporary taste in furnishings and I like an open and airy loft. When I first received this book in the mail, I almost quit breathing. It was if the authors had looked into my dreams and thoughts to create this book. This book truly represents the contemporary feel and look that I like so well. I can guarantee you that if you are interested in a contemporary look to your loft, this is your book. I know that I will probably wear this book out, because it is truly an inspirational vision of a modern loft. The photos are beautifully done, the writing is sharp and concise, and the overall quality is outstanding!!
Home, or something like it.......2003-05-26
Young people today aren't keeping to the small-town or suburban lifestyles of their parents. They're going to the cities to rent studio apartments. Once there, they're likely to end up moving into family-size spaces.
City planners and administrators are taking this back-to-the-cities trend into consideration. They're trying to make city living appeal to young future owners. One way is by business building up a neighborhood around it, in brownstones; floor-through flats; high-rise apartments; lofts; offbeat converted places such as autoshops and stables; rowhouses; and townhouses.
Likewise, architects are thinking about the loss of peace, privacy and quiet that usually comes with city living. They're coming up with designs that meet young needs for shelter and express young personalities. The result really is personal space inside, even with such impersonal space outside as "shadowy" concrete buildings.
This is done by clearly-defined lines, hand-worked materials, soothing planes, and unusual details indoors. It's also by putting in balconies and terraces and opening up roofs and windows to light and views onto deliberately planted small, green spaces. Similarly, not much space inside looks bigger, for example, by using the same materials in and out, such as cedar flooring, fencing and decking.
THE NEW CITY HOME even brings working spaces inside, while keeping them attractively and cleverly separate from living spaces. In one case, for example, the outside has cottage-style clapboard cladding for the first floor. Indoors, the kitchen and living spaces have a cozy look, what with simple cabinetry, low ceilings and boldly painted colors. The second floor has plywood panels on the outside. Inside, spotlights, skylights, and high ceilings show the upper level to be for work.
What if the two can't always be separated, as in bathrooms or kitchens? Space isn't clearly personal or work, if it brings in universal design. This means, for example, lever handles to doors and faucets, rocker-panel light switches, and textured non-slip flooring.
Leslie Plummer Clagett's book is organized and written in an understandable, user-friendly way. Her choice of illustrations works perfectly with what she says. This practical help to city living is rounded out with Elizabeth Franklin's THE FRANKLIN REPORT, NEW YORK CITY 2003: THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO HOME SERVICES.
One of the best in this class.......2003-04-20
I've browsed about twenty different contemporary interior books, and I've found this to be most interesting and slightly more inspiring.
One piece of advice: I don't think any of the contemporary interior books have as much variety as one might expect. Make sure to browse the physical books before making a final decision - don't base you decision on these reviews alone. I've done this with many book on interior design and I've been disappointed.

Written for the general reader with an interest in ceramics, Handbuilt Ceramics is a big, colorful, and complete how-to manual for shaping clay without a potter’s wheel. Features 8 projects, complete with materials lists, clear step-by-step instructions, and detailed “how-to” color photos.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-07-03
As an experienced ceramic artist, it's nice to be reminded, that we are never too old to learn
In this book Kathy Triplett shares many of her skills, what I also enjoy is seeing the works of some other outstanding ceramic artist
Honestly, after seeing this book, you will be off to the ceramic supply store, and stocking up on clay & glazes
Comprehensive Ceramics Book.......2006-07-19
Through setting up, producing simple pieces to attempting more complex projects 'Handbuilt Ceramics' is an excellent guide. There are many examples of simple and basic ceramics pieces for inspiration along with practical advice. Each of the projects has step by step photographs and clear written explanations. I have found it useful and interesting.
Very useful.......2005-10-07
This is one of the most useful and well-done ceramics books I've found. It strikes a good balance between basic information (i.e., theory) and practical application (in the form of example projects). It has hundreds of good color photos: some of finished work (to stimulate creative ideas), and others showing step-by-step techniques being applied. The text is well-written and full of useful tips.
Inspiring.......2002-10-23
This book is wonderful. The writing is clear and concise, the project instructions have enough detail to give you confidence for execution and experimentation.
The photos are good quality and inspirational. In the short time I have owned this, I have used it in adult and children's classes. For smaller children who want to rush to the wheel, the book gives excellent examples of what can be accomplished with handbuilding.
The book lit a creative fire for new 6 year-old potters and this old, experienced potter.
Excellent book for both experienced and new potters.......2002-03-18
I turned to this book after being "stuck" with wheel throwing--I just can't think of anything to make on the wheel that appeals to me right now. The pictures and techniques have freshened my creativity and inspiration, and are leading me to explore new techniques and develop new skills that I will eventually combine with wheel-thrown pieces. My favorite aspect of the book is the variety of styles that are shown in the beautiful pictures--there really is something for everyone in here. The directions are comprehensive and clear. Thank you, Kathy, for bringing back the excitement I felt when I first started working with clay. An amazing book! I'm not allowed to come to class without it, and other class members have made trips to the book store to pick up their own copy.
Book Description
Your character, more than anything else, will impact how much you accomplish in this life. It is more important than your talent, your education, your background, or your network of friends. Andy Stanley helps you chart a course toward becoming a man or woman of character. You'll discover a definition of character that will inspire you for a lifetime, the external and internal benefits of strong character, the six false beliefs behind negative behaviors, and more. Using practical insights, biblical exposition, and engaging stories, Stanley guides you step-by-step in setting the personal goals that will build the foundation for true success.
The Secret to a Life with No Regrets
How important is your character? It determines everything about you! How much you will accomplish in life, and whether you are worth knowing. How you will respond to success, and how you will weather the inevitable storms of life.
This is a book about uncompromised living. It is about choosing every day to be a man or woman of integrity, a person whose actions speak louder than words. Bestselling author Andy Stanley challenges you to become what you were meant to be: a person whose commitment to doing the right thing, whatever the cost, will inspire others and change your world.
Story Behind the Book
As a pastor, I spend a substantial amount of my time with people who are digging themselves out from personal environmental catastrophes—circumstances that were often years in the making but “took them by surprise.” Another group of people have faced, or are facing, storms of life that are not of their own making, storms created by the character deficits of others—storms that are a natural part of a fallen world.
There, in the midst of unjust treatment and seemingly undeserved pain, the true character of a man or woman is revealed. What you see in such moments is what was really there all along. This book is about change. It’s about the process of taking raw materials and molding them, shaping them, and refining them into a finished product. Whether you know it or not, that process is happening in you. Your character, not your accomplishments or acquisitions, determines your legacy.
Customer Reviews:
Pastor's perspective.......2007-05-21
There is some good material in this particular book, however it was not as good as some of Stanley's other stuff. I found his book, "The Best Question Ever" more informative, with more of a practical application. Obviouly the man is an extremely talented writer.
So Practicle. So Applicable!.......2007-02-25
This book is a must-have for anyone, any age and any stage.
Louder Than Words.......2006-11-04
This book was so well written and so applicable to my life, but to be honest, it would be so for pretty much any body's life. And to be completely honest with you, Andy Stanley is such a great speaker and writer that I recomend just about any sermon or book by him. He has such a unique, but basic view on things and how they should be, and he is very well gifted in getting them across. He can make something as "everyday" as the Lord's Prayer not just interesting, but captivating. So, to get back to the book, If you're looking to not just improve your character but actually understand what character is, this is the book for you.
Even if you're not jealous, angry, greedy, prideful, or dishonest..........2006-05-19
I challenge you to read this book. Even if you are none of the things above, chances are you know someone who is. So buy the book for them (but read through a bit yourself).
Andy writes like a person carrying on a conversation with you. He constructs scenarios that leave you with a handful of questions, and then he answer them one at a time with practical advice and scriptural support.
This is a book about integrity and character. Andy provides real solutions that you can start implementing in your life immediately to start combating each character issue. You will see yourself, and the people around you, very differently after reading this book. You won't regret this change.
I bought this book for each of the 11th grade guys in my small group. If you are a father, I recommend buying 2 copies and reading it along with your teenage son or daughter. Maybe schedule coffee every other week, and discuss one chapter per sitting.
Andy says that every day you are either growing closer to, or further away, from the person you want to be. This book is a guide for those who desire to be deliberate about becoming the person they wish they were all along.
The book on godly character development !! :0) AA +++.......2005-12-29
This is a great book to read on Christian character development, what it means to grow gracefully in the Lord, to learn about poise and elegance from the liberation of being obedient to God (and they are not burdensome :) , how our reverence to the Almighty slowly changes our character and our willingness to go through such changes in light of a person's reverence for God. Character is a reflection of our inner being. Stanley includes appropriate biblical passages, it is a must read book for anyone who wants to develop their character to the likeness of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.

Pantomimic Ecstasy.......2004-02-01
Sergio Aragones's finest work is together in a MUST HAVE book, Universal humor, that people in China and Mexico can understand.
Some of the sketches make you laugh out loud....
This is Pantomimic Ecstasy
comic genius.......1999-10-07
Aragones has long been my favourite comic writer. He bringswit to all of those buttock clenching moments we've all experienced -from the classic gag of the kid seeing a preganant woman and imagining one baby inside her, to the fat woman and the kid imagining twenty babies.
Having collected all Aragones work, from his days at MAD magazine to Groo and Bogey Man, this is arguably his finest so far. Louder Than Words is the perfect way to pass a sunny afternoon outside with a beer, and gauranteed good laughs.

Actions Speak Louder Than Verbs.......2006-02-20
Here is a fresh, innovative way to understand Jesus' teaching. Actions Speak Louder Than Verbs zeroes in on ten great verbs - all commands - spoken by Jesus. In a clear, easy-to-follow style, Herb Miller uses these verbs to show
*How to connect with God's creative energy
(repent, follow, pray, believe)
*How to treat other people
(love, forgive)
*How to help other people connect with God
(go, baptize, teach, serve)
Actions Speak Louder Than Verbs contains a mix of Jesus' teachings regarding these commands and related verbs as well as humor, illustrative stories, and insights for daily living. Bible study groups and Sunday school classes will appreciate the inclusion of discussion questions. Clergy seeking sermon enrichment and anyone seeking fresh inspirational writing will find this book an ideal resource.

PARADIGMS REGAINED.......2003-09-10
However you choose to 'rate' this short book, it seems to me that it needs to be treated with respect. The theme is not new. The author's perception is that the multifarious abuses that we inflict on one another and on the world we live on stem from an outlook founded on the self, and that a change is needed in the way we see and feel about the world in totality. We need, he argues, to take a more universal outlook. This is not a religious standpoint -- he has no time for religion, and I should probably say neither have I. He does not argue for a complete abasement of the self so as to achieve 'perfection' in the manner of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola. Nor does he propose to try and enforce a new mentality along any lines resembling Mao's Cultural Revolution.
He does not talk the fashionable claptrap, so beloved of the personal development industry, about 'paradigm shifts', but that is really his theme. The book will no doubt come in for criticism, if indeed it manages to attract any significant notice at all, for lack of realism and practicality, but it seems to me that if paradigm shifts are a proposition worth pursuing in the cause of self-enrichment and career-advancement, then they cannot be dismissed out of hand where the objective is to preserve our planet and end the bestial abuses that are now everyday reality. Most of the book focuses on the negative side. As well as the familiar criminal horrors, he gives a fair amount of criticism to many charities for pork-barrelling, waste, corruption, inefficiency and careerism by the executives. Above all what he castigates is hypocrisy. He finds what he terms a spiritual circus of people who like to have their caring emotions indulged and he sees this, rightly in my view, as simply a form of self-indulgence and a thoroughly repulsive one at that. Its extreme form is represented by the lady who ran out of excuses and rationalisations for the unnecessary deaths from disease and malnutrition and so fell back on 'Maybe these people were meant to die'. Meant by whom? By someone the buck could be passed to without either losing her sense of moral rectitude or actually impairing her own comfort, fairly obviously.
I would say that it is worth separating the idea itself from considerations of its practicability. Obviously there are pretty major hurdles here in envisaging a world led by the totally unambitious. It is also fair to say that Scott's two chapters on the actual change of attitude necessary are distinctly thin. I'm quite clear about how I feel about it all myself, as the question has exercised me all my life. As far as charities are concerned I follow Clare Rayner's maxim 'Do your bit and hope others will do theirs', knowing of course perfectly well that they largely won't. I find nothing to admire in my own approach, which is driven partly by outrage and human pity, partly no doubt by guilt. I don't feel capable of this sort of paradigm shift, largely because the whole project seems to me to be up against hopeless odds. The book will do nothing to influence the ideologues driven by economic theory or by patriotism or by religion or by other forms of partisanship, for whom anything, or more or less anything, goes in the name of the cause they believe in. Where it might do some good is in bringing us face to face with institutionalised humbug. In the last resort those of us who can't or won't lead in this matter might follow if, maybe through environmental disaster that forces us to behave differently, a real political will develops to stop looking the other way. If it does then anything can become a possibility, and much of what we glibly call realism by way of justifying abuse and neglect could crumble like Klingsor's garden.
