3 out of 5 stars Could have and should have been better.......2005-01-11

I had been waiting for a book on this subject for some time so you can imagine my excitement when this book came out. I am sorry to say that it's somewhat of a disappointment, I expected a better researched book and also one that including some current color pictures of the surviving estates. The authors of the book on architects Delano and Aldrich did a wonderful job of combining great archival B&W photos with rich currect color pictures. The archival photos in this book are wonderful, but you finish the book wondering what the surviving estates look like today and in color, I really do hope the authors take this criticism to heart and make vol. II a five star book, they are not that far from it with this book and quite frankly the subject deserves it.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar launch to a great series........2004-12-27

I bought this book two years ago when it came out and I had to reply to the simple comments of another critic on this page. The author put together an incredible group of old photographs from around the time the houses were built, showing exteriors, interiors, and gardens. He talked about the architects and the clients and about the designs of the houses, as well as giving a detailed history of the Main Line and how it came to be. Color photographs would have ruined the old-time feel of the book, which is beautiful in design and execution. Any educated eye will appreciate this book and the series that it is a part of. Congratulations to the author and the publisher.

    Book Description

Antwerp=Fashion=Culture=Mode 2001=Landed-Geland. This equation stands for the cosmopolitan, idiosyncratic, fascinating, and stimulating event that was Landed-Geland, a six-month, citywide, multimedia extravaganza that recently colored and clothed the city of Antwerp in the name of fashion. Twenty five rotating billboards displayed 75 radical images by international designers; the exhibit Mutilate? examined the phenomenon of fashion from an ethnic and historical perspective; another exhibit, 2 Women, examined Gabrielle Chang and Rei Kawakubo, two maverick designers of indisputable importance; and 300 interviewees were asked the question: "What was your most intense emotion ever as regards fashion?" And here is the catalog.

Lee Friedlander's photographs of women in their birthday suits leave me cold, but they invite comparison with Edward Weston's classic black and white nudes. Bare breasts and buttocks took on another dimension when Weston was behind the camera; his headless torsos more closely resemble the work of painters and sculptors than the passionless images of ladies decapitated by Friedlander and other contemporary photographers. Charis Wilson's memoir of posing for (and living with) Weston--and her under-the-skin take on the thought process behind his nude studies--is fascinating.

    Book Description

Of all the unnoticed works of art in nature revealed by Weston's camera, it was the human form that most persistently challenged this great photographer throughout his working life. Erotic, sculptural, and poetic, his nude photographs of lovers, friends, and of his son Neil combine the essentials of physical passion with a desire to go beyond the transitory to a discovery of eternal forms.

In his search for the ideal, Weston concentrated on the fundamental physical aspects of his subjects, empowering his prints with an intrinsic grace and elegance. There is a desire to draw near, and a distant, unknowable sense of sculpture; a reflection of universal rhythms, revealing the "vital essence of things."

In his Daybook dated December 9, 1934, Weston wrote: "The first nudes of C. were amongst the finest I had done, perhaps the finest." "C." was Charis Wilson, then a girl of 20. For the next ten years, she lived with and posed for Weston, and developed such an instinctive understanding of his style that as they drove through the West on photography expeditions, Weston would often close his eyes and doze while Charis scanned the horizon for "Edward Weston" subject matter. Charis proved so adept at putting Weston's thoughts into words that shortly after they met, he turned over to her all his writing chores.

In the present volume, Charis draws upon her experiences as both model and partner to offer a uniquely informed remembrance not only of Weston's nudes--which comprise the largest single category of his output--but also of the man himself. Of her first encounter with Weston's photographs of the nude, Charis writes: "Nothing could have been farther from "Art Poses" than Edward's nudes, and I was fascinated by their strong individuality as body portraits. At first I had the same trouble with the peppers, dead birds, and eroded planks--I couldn't get past the simple amazement at how real they were. Then I began to see the rhythmic patterns, the intensely perceived sculptural forms, the subtle modulations of tone, of which these small, perfect images were composed. And I began to appreciate the originality of the viewpoint that had selected just these transitory moments and made them fast against the current of time."

Edward Weston . . . the most highly revered of photographers . . . his nude photographs emerge in fugues of craft and insight neither nude nor naked but filled with life.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2006-03-17

Above all, this is a gorgeous collection of figure studies in black and white. Some photos, like the cover, celebrate the elegance of the human form. Others explore figure as a medium for abstraction - simple shape, almost detached from the person, quite unlike photo as portraiture.

In a secondary way, this is a record of the time in which the photos were taken, mostly the 1930s. Figure as abstraction was a relatively recent innovation, and Weston embraced it fully. He also seemed to combine abstraction with darkroom technique, sometimes bordering on solarization. This also captures the style of the times, when shaving wasn't necessarily part of a lady's grooming - surprising to a modern eye, but a happy reminder that womanly beauty comes from the woman herself, not from products and processes she subjects herself to.

The real surprise in this book, however, is the commentary by Charis Wilson. She was Weston's wife for many years, and model for a huge part of Weston's figure ouvre. She gives unique insight into Weston's working style, one that treated the models as collaborators rather than raw material.

It is interesting that Wilson discusses Weston's work with other models with the same enjoyment she shows in discussing his work with her. As she points out, the photo is truly about the photographer more than it's about the model. And, because of her long and close relationship with Weston, this is a very affectionate discussion of his work.

3 out of 5 stars He also did a few nude males........2003-10-07

Reproductions are pretty good. Text lacks meat although the photos don't. Incidentally, Weston did photograph a few nude males although you wouldn't know it from this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2000-10-18

This was the type of book I was looking for concerning Weston's nude photography. The background, written by his wife and model, was excellent, and the pictures were laid out perfectly. Highly recommended to any Weston fan.

    Book Description

A seminal figure in the history of photography, Edward Weston (1886-1958) began his long and colorful career in Southern California. Among the more than fifty prints gleaned from the Getty Museum's important collection of approximately 240 works that span the photographer's career, this book
features pictures made in Claremont, Glendale, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and other locations in California and the U.S.
Weston wed machine-age aesthetics with vernacular subjects, pursuing Modernism as a way of seeing. He produced works of art using subject matter as wide-ranging as sea shells, green peppers, sand dunes and nudes, and he set a standard for elegant composition and print technique for generations of
    photographers to come.
Commentaries on each of the featured works, as well as an introduction and chronology, are provided by Brett Abbott, curatorial assistant in the Getty Museum's Department of Photographs. A colloquium discussion on the artist's work includes Abbott's contributions as well as those of six other
participants: photographer William Clift; Amy Conger, author of Edward Weston: Photographs from the Collection of the Center for Creative Photography; David Featherstone, a freelance writer and editor; Weston Naef, curator of photographs at the Getty Museum; David Travis, curator of photography at
the Art Institute of Chicago; and Jennifer Watts, curator of photographs at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.

4 out of 5 stars some timeless photos.......2007-07-06

The Getty Museum has been putting out this series of booklets, each on a noted artist or photographer. This item shows many photographs taken, or perhaps more fittingly, composed by Edward Weston. The Getty had amassed originals of many of his best works, only some of which are reproduced here. They were made from 1900-50. Some have a timeless quality. Often imbued with a deliberate haziness in the background.

The text that accompanies the photos provides a short biography of Weston's life, and a context to the photos.

        Book Description

"When you read this book, remember that you're not just reading one man's story. Kurt, by virtue of his unique connections to the artistic community, speaks with a rare authority about taking risks for your art, investing in your own aspirations, and expanding your artistic horizons. Kurt's view of the events of his life are all interpreted by their proximity to his art. In that regard, this book represents a rare opportunity indeed." - From the introduction by Cole Weston

Art in Residence features portraits of eighty influential West Coast artists, including Ansel Adams, Cole Weston, Eleanor Antin, Jock Sturges, Robert Arneson, Judy Chicago, and more. Each portrait captures the subject in his or her work space and is accompanied by a brief statement from the artist. The photographs are more than stunning portraits—the intense intimacy of Fishback's style, as well as his personal relationships with his subjects, make each one an eloquent visual biography.

Fishback's style is influenced by his past work as a sculptor; the work of his father, photographer Glen Fishback; and by his close personal and artistic relationships with Edward Weston and Ansel Adams.

5 out of 5 stars A Visually Stunning Book, Black and White at its finest.......2000-07-14

This book is both very beautiful and informative. Kurt's images allow you to really see the artist and the surroundings that help them create their work. Kurt looks at both their outer body and their inner soul.

I highly recommend this book for any person who loves both Art and Photography

5 out of 5 stars Artists in Their Environment.......2000-07-14

I met Kurt about 5 years ago. He was teaching a class at The Workshops in Rockport, Maine. I was immediately impressed with Kurt's work and his uncanny ability to capture the essence of his subject at the defining moment. Kurt's vision is timeless, and this work demonstrates his ability to make powerful images with only Tri-X and available light. This is an excellent book for the serious amateur photographer who wants to refine his own photographic vision. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars "Art in Residence: West Coast Artists in Their Space".......2000-07-14

I have been one of Kurt Edward Fishback's students for the past year and have been looking forward to the publication of this book. It is truly an extraordinary and prodiqious work and should be of interest to everyone. It makes artists accessable to the public. Lonnie

Two granite jawed lawmen with little tolerance for outsiders with strange abilities in their cities, must find a way not to beat the hell out of each other too badly, and eventually work together to stop a threat in Mega-City. Dredd tells Batman at the end of the Gotham based part of the story that it is foreseen he will be needed in Dredd's town.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book and great art!.......2000-03-30

I've been a huge Judge Dread fun for a long time, and I was pleasently surprised to find these books of alternate universe fiction. His meeting with Batman was very well depicted, especially when the differences, as well as the hidden similarities, of the two heros were shown. A definite must read to all Judge Dread funs.
