I hunted for this book when it was sold out everywhere, finally found a copy and was disappointed. The content of the book was awesome, but the pulpy paper it was printed on was a letdown. I never did buy it for that very reason.

This review will be very short. If you fancy the art and eroticism of "Tom of Finland", then this is the QUINTESSENTIAL collection to own. IT IS JUST PLAIN AWESOME.

Now THIS is how the art of Tom of Finland SHOULD be represented...in a volume large enough for us to appreciate the great detail in his work. UNFORTUNATELY, the people at TASCHEN and the Tom of Finland Foundation found it necessary to re-release this wonderful volume in a SMALLER, cheaper version, and that trend has only gotten worse with the recent release of Tom's "COMIC COLLECTION" - which I reviewed negatively only to see that entire title WITHDRAWN from Amazon in less that 24 hours after my review appeared...so to read THAT review, you'll have to click "SEE ALL MY REVIEWS".

I have owned this book for several years now and never tire of it. Yes, it's over the top and exaggerated, but that's the fun of it. It's hot and worth every penny. Skip the mini version, and get the full-size, hardcover version - this is Tom of Finland, after all!

When I first discovered this book in a London bookshop, I decided at once that I needed to own it. It's large, it's bulky, but it's beautiful. It needs the large pages to illustrate the finest examples of Tom's works. As an artist myself, who learnt a lot from Tom's unique techniques, I appreciate what a fantastic collection of art, both colour and black and white, has been compiled into this collection. But it's not just pictures; there's an insight into the man himself, a delightful tribute to the Master of Homoerotic Art. This volume is a great tribute to Tom and a valuable tool for the new breed of erotic artists, like myself, waiting for recognition.

heart thumping.......2007-05-08

Just happened to see this item on Amazon. Had never heard about Tom or his work. Took a chance and ordered the book.Just one word should describe it - MINDBLOWING !

Although the art and line drawings are repetitive, the way the whole story is conceptualised and brought to life in the drawings is indeed amazing.

Am a fan now and forever, have also ordered a couple of his other books.

The only reason I give a four star rating is that the Book could have been published in one volume and the size and layout could also have been slightly larger, which would have enhanced the visual appeal.

All in all a book worth keeping and prying into as and when the need "ARISES"!

GORGEOUS REPRODUCTIONS--BUT THEY'RE CROPPED!.......2006-02-22

I can't agree with most of the niggling in other reviews about this set. The images are beautifully reproduced in crystalline detail, many of them in rich duo-tones, and the binding is a beautiful black leatherette with rich-looking gold-foil lettering and line images. The small size is no drawback, either-it gives a jewel-like aura to the whole set, and while some previous collections (such as one I first purchased in the 1980s) used an 8-1/2 by 11 format, they also reproduced four panels to a page, so that the actual pictures were no larger (and considerably less well reproduced).

HOWEVER, in comparing this set with previous ones, I noticed that where the original drawings had no distinct boundaries, the pages here are circumscribed by a hairline box, which results in the images being "cropped"-that is, a small amount of the drawing on each side is cut off. In most cases the overall effect is not too damaging, but there are images of group scenes in which what had been full figures are reduced to merely a hand or a nose. Considering that this is presumably meant to be a "definitive" publication of all of Tom's cartoons, I'm amazed that the Tom of Finland Foundation would permit this sort of trimming.

That being said, I must add that overall I think they did a beautiful job, and the price is very modest for a collection of this quality.

It's NOT a quality collection.......2006-02-20

This is REALLY sub-par work. There are so many errors in the text that a corrected version is rumored to be coming, and there are more "mizsphelings" than one of Durk's emails! One recent customer review, also peppered with misspellings (so wonder who wrote THAT one, Mr. D.D.) sings the praises of this volume and suggests that because ANOTHER reviewer who panned the collection also sells it on ebay, it should not be criticized...BULL.

If the Tom of Finland Foundation is gonna make a buck on this dreadful collection, why shouldn't others! The illustrations are TINY and the text is BORING! It's VERY "old school" and irrelevant. The price is CHEAP because the collection is cheaply done and it is insulting to the artistry and memory of Tom of Finland. These illustrations are SMALLER than post cards, so unless you like to do your one-handed reading with a magnifying glass, pass this one up. It's just a mess.

The next must-have collection of TOF if you only got the "huge and thick" book - The Art Of Pleasure.

I will save the space here for others' words but just to give you an idea how turned-on I am to get my copy... A friend would re-order it in Singapore (Kinokuniya's first 50 copies sold out in less than 2 weeks as Christmas gift alone in last December), fly out and give it to me in Bangkok so I could bring in via KLIA easily. Get the picture?

P/S: This review refers to the 5-in-1 collection in a black slipcase 3.8" x 5.5", 960 pages.

A timeless classic best buy for the buck! Buy it now!.......2005-12-30

This is a best buy and Amazon's price is most favorable when compared with other retailers. It should be noted that some of the authors of complaints about this book sold copies of it on e-bay for over $60 before Amazon got stock in. If they did not like the book, why did they sell it at competing sites? The larger versions mentioned went for $20 each story, so to purchase a collection of this size it would be well over $500 and out of the price range of most.

Now as to the content. The repros are the best I have seen in awhile and I own the 8.5" x 11" copies reffred to by most other reviewers. In addition not all the books were ever released at the so called larger size. "Beach Boys" , for example, was only slightly larger that the size of this edition. So do not be fooled by some of the other reviews. Again I know because I either own or have read originals on most of the contents. Also note that the size reflects what these books really are, namely Gay "Tiahuana Bibles" (sic). This was the term used to refer to straight material of the same nature in the early part of the last century. As such the size is that of the average "bible". In fact in many cases it is somewhat larger.

The Media is an excellent choice, soft pliable, thread reinforced, spine which will not wear easily desipte the heavy reading these books will get. The paper is gloss stock heavy bond which also shoul wear well. The covers or synthetic, so they will not stain easily or tear.

All in all better stock than the originals and highly doubtful that you will see a better edition any time soon.

A side note, if this material is of interest to you buy it now. Print runs on this stuff tend to be rather low and 2nd editions tend to be rare. If you want it buy it or risk paying 10x more in a year on ebay.

Another beautiful book in this great series.......2007-08-11

I'm addicted to Mexican style, colors, and design aesthetics. This newest book in the "Mexi-" series focuses entirely on kitchens. The photos are profuse with color, light, and (if you love this stuff the way I do) decorating ideas!

As a bonus, if you own all the books in this series (Mexicolor, Mexicasa, In a Mexican Garden, and Mexicocina), they themselves become a terrific Mexican-style design accent placed together on your bookshelf. :-)

Wonderfully Informative, 'Ole!.......2007-04-05

I ordered Mexicocina because I was looking for decorating ideas for my kitchen. But, I found so much more! This book is not only equipped with beautiful Mexican kitchens, but also the history behind the kitchens, and tasty recipes. Me and my husband's favorite country to visit is Mexico. This book gave us some great information on bed and breakfasts in different areas of Mexico.

This is a great coffee table book too!

A Functional Coffee Table Book !.......2007-01-11

My husband and I are building a new home in Mexico and wanted to make sure we kept it as authentic as possible, thus the book orders. This particular book is filled with spectacular photos of Mexican kitchens ranging from the most spectacular to the more common. Each page is filled with building ideas as well as decorating inspirations. Who would have thought of collecting beautifully carved wooden spoons for a wall display ! The authors include much narrative explaining background of the kitchens and various decorations/selections, as well as history. Everyone will enjoy the brilliant colors and artwork as each page is turned.

A Fascinating Tour of the Kitchens of Mexico.......2007-01-10

The pictures are glorious and the text is very well written, concise and informative. I have travelled to many of these kitchens with Betsy McNair and it's like taking the tour all over again. There's no better guide to Mexico than Ms. McNair. She really knows the history and the people. If you can't go with her in person then the book is the next best thing.

Lovely book!.......2006-12-30

As a traveler who has been fortunate enough to experience lots of Mexican feasts in many a cocina, I found this book to bring back happy memories of many fantastic meals and parties. The photographs are lovely and Ms. McNair's descriptions bring each one to life. I especially liked that many recipes are included, including one for chiles en nogada, for which I have been searching for an authentic recipe! Highly recommended for anyone who has an affinity for all things Mexican, especially, the heart of the home!

Jimmy Carter makes 1976 a great year for editorial cartoons.......2003-05-18

"Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year, 1977" captures the events of 1976, which was a banner year for editorial cartoonists. The reason why is aptly captured by the cartoon on the cover of this collection, which shows the iconically toothy smile of Jimmy Carter, who came out of nowhere (a.k.a. Plains, Georgia) to be elected President of the United States. 1976 had it all: the nation's bicentennial, political scandals, a heated Presidential campaign, an election that went down to the wire and divided the nation along geographical lines, all wrapped up the distinctive facial features of Jimmy Carter (and an infamous interview "Playboy" magazine).

The editorial cartoonist of the year was clearly Tony Auth of the Philadelphia "Inquirer," who won both the Pulitzer Prize, for a carton of Leonid Breshnev singing "American the Beautiful" in an American wheat field, and the Sigma Delta Chi Award, for a cartoon of Muslims and Christians killing each other in the name of their religions in Beirut. There are also several cartoons by my all-time favorite, Jeff MacNelly, along with choice cartoons by Robert Graysmith, Ed Gamble, Mike Peters, and Dick Locher. You will certainly get a sense of the new school and old school approaches to editorial cartooning.

Cartoons about the 1976 Election provide the single largest chapter in the collection, with the vast majority of those being about the challenger Carter. The challenge to President Gerald Ford by Ronald Reagan in the Republican Party receives treatment as well, along with the Wayne Hays Scandal (does the name Elizabeth Ray ring a bell?). In terms of international affairs there was turmoil in Southern Africa, OPEC raising the price of oil, tension in the Middle East in general and Lebanon in particular, and the death of Mao Tse-Tung (that was the spelling used back then). There were, of course, cartoons on perennial topics like Crime, Defense, Education, and the Economy, as well as one time subjects such as the Swine Flu, Earl Butz, and the mystery of Howard Hughes' will.

This is the fifth collection of the annual series that brings together hundreds of examples of the high art of editorial cartoonists by more than 130 of its practitioners compiled by Charles Brooks, award-winning editorial cartoonist for the Birmingham "News" and former president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. The introduction is written by Draper Hill, an editorial cartoonists for the Detroit "News" who comments on the change in this satirical art form, arguing: "Dignity is out of fashion. For the younger cartoonists, sentiment is so suspect as to be virtually taboo." Given that we are now talking about an American living in the post-Vietnam, post-Watergate era, this is not surprising.
