According to the author, it is a house that is poetic, one that stimulates feelings and ideas. In The Good Home, readers will discover, step by step, the picturesque techniques they can use to give their house a sense of soul-a character that arouses emotions and sentiment. Drawing from a full-color portfolio of "soulful" homes, this guide examines such interior and exterior design techniques as focal points, shaped spaces, transparency, and enfilade, as well as, lighting, landscaping, and much more. For anyone considering building a house who likes traditional building styles with a contemporary twist, The Good Home will be an important addition to the library.

What Is This.......2003-10-15
I Am an Optimist but I Am also a Realist, some people would give something in the road dead a good review but there are some things nothing good can be said about it.
I bought 2 books "The Good Home" and "The Cabin" The Cabin is a little bit better but both are over priced, $8.00 would be a better price. they are a professional looking books hard cover with high gloss pictures.
The information these books give have little to be desired, sometime these books will tell what materials was used and a little bit about the history of the owenrs but that is about it.
If You are look for a these books to show You how to build it, forget it! these books are more like if they were written by a real-estate agent or something not a Carpenter.
A Great Book About a Rare Talent.......2003-09-09
This is a gorgeous book. The images are of extraordinary quality, and, like another reviewer commented, make one feel as though you're in the room. The text is, well, charming. And that's a good thing. This isn't a dry, academic tome, and the reader is engaged by the almost poetic descriptions. One really begins to think about what's being conveyed. My hat is off to authors Dennis Wedlick and Philip Langdon.
But foremost is the rare talent of Wedlick. There are many bad architects out there, and the global built fabric has been significantly diminished these past five decades by Bad Modernism (as opposed to the rare Good Modernism). More rare these past five decades are architects conversant with a language of tradition. Even rarer still are architects who work this ancient language with skill, humor, and economy of line. Wedlick, like Sir John Soane, knows how to break the "rules" without ever descending into silliness.
The crisp plans reveal an impressive attention to compact arrangements, and offer a rebuke to the needless Bigger Is Better phenomenon that has swept America. Wedlick is unusually adept at making sense from complicated geometry (notably with his star-shaped house). His ability to work with both a language of tradition AND modernism is remarkable, and it's to his credit that he has deftly maintained a foot in these opposing camps. The built world would be infinitely improved if more architects kept their feet engaged as such!
My only complaints are:
1) The plans are grouped at the end, forcing one to flip back and forth while reading about a house.
2) Some highlighted houses don't have plans!
3) No site plans are included.
4) There's almost no information about Wedlick. One yearns to know more about the man, his practice, and clients.
These concerns do not offset my giving the book five stars.
Most charm for the money.......2003-08-31
This is an enjoyable book. It consists of photo spreads of several homes by the architect author, with explanatory text. It's much more focused than similar books, but, like them, uses polished professional photography and ghost writing.
The theme is houses with Picturesque charm, or at least as much as can be had with new construction. I feel true charm is always accidental and only accrues over time, but, for those who feel instant charm is better than none at all, there are no better examples. At least for modern homes. Otherwise, Storybook Style: America's Whimsical Homes of the Twenties takes the cake.
Homes for people who aren't afraid to live !!!!.......2002-11-18
Dennis is one of the most talented young architects in America. Anyone who has come into contact with his work, whether its been a real built home or an exhibit such as the ones put up in the Winter Garden at the WFC, Grand Central Station or the Mall of the Americas will walk away saying "that's really neat...I wish I could live like that for a day". Rarely has someone so gifted focused on designing and sharing those concepts with everyday people on budgets. Most architects with a quarter the talent are the ones that design impractical spaces for Wall Street budgets. Refer to the LIFE magazine house of the year series. Dennis' design is by far the most popular one built, in spite of trophy talent like Graves, and Stern sharing the winners circle. To the reader who said he was disappointed...think about this. The mere fact that Dennis' floor plans are in the book is invaluable....try buying a better floor plan for $50. That reader should stick to buying stock house plan magazines at the checkout counter.
reply to disappointed.......2002-05-17
The person who wrote that the houses seem impractical to live in does not know what they are talking about. I live in one of Dennis Wedlick's magical houses and I can attest to the fact that I find the space thoroughly livable and practical in addition to being inspiring. Every day in this house is a life-enriching joy and everyone who visits here comments on what a magnificent house it is. People leave here changed by the experience of the place. It is annoying when people write reviews about things they have no experience of whatsoever.

Book Description
Although oil remains an important binding medium in artists' paints, today's synthetic resins are being used with increasing frequency. This was true during much of the twentieth century, when artists such as David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jackson Pollock, and Pablo Picasso used commercial or
industrial paints based on synthetic resins. The growing popularity of synthetic resin materials carries important implications for the conservation, preservation, and treatment of modern art.
This volume outlines the techniques that are currently employed to analyze the synthetic resins used in modern painting materials, such as pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, and direct temperature-resolved mass spectrometry. For each technique,
results are given for standard samples of the principal classes of synthetic binding media, various pigments and extenders, tube paint formulations, and microscopic paint fragments taken from actual works of art.
Primarily intended for conservation scientists, conservators, researchers, and students of conservation, this book will also be of interest to other museum professionals.

Book Description
Over the past seventy years, a staggering array of new pigments and binders has been developed and used in the production of paint, and twentieth-century artists readily applied these materials to their canvases. Paints intended for houses, boats, cars, and other industrial applications
frequently turn up in modern art collections, posing new challenges for paintings conservators.
This volume presents the papers and posters from "Modern Paints Uncovered," a symposium organized by the Getty Conservation Institute, Tate, and the National Gallery of Art and held at Tate Modern, London, in May 2006. Professionals from around the world shared the results of research on paints that
have been available to artists since 1930--the date that synthetic materials began to significantly impact the paint industry.
Modern Paints Uncovered showcases the varied strands of cutting-edge research into the conservation of contemporary painted surfaces. These include paint properties and surface characteristics, analysis and identification, aging behavior, and safe and effective conservation techniques.

Book Description
For the tradition-minded, true photographic art will always be black and white. But today, the digital darkroom offers a degree of artistic control the masters of the past would envy. Each dramatic photo shown here, whether it was captured digitally or on film, became a work of monochrome art in the computer (even if it was originally shot in color). Readers will learn how to achieve similar results, print the images to best effect, and share them with the world, in this inspiring and informative guide.

Making beautiful B & W photos from colour.......2006-11-21
This excellent book shows a wide variety of coloured photographs taken by various professional and amateur photographers. It clearly explains how they can be improved upon by those who might appreciate or prefer the wonderful medium of B & W photography by manipulation in a graphics program, here, mainly Adobe Photoshop.
The book is fairly concise but the better for it. It has a practicality about it which you can only tap into by serious application; a passionate joy for some, a chore for others.
I have examined a number of books on the same theme; this is the better.
This is "comprehensive"? The author better look it up in a dictionary........2006-03-03
I was expecting more detailed examples beyond what every typical photoshop book has to offer, but it only delivered about 60% of what I was wanting. This book is nothing more than a Cliff Notes version of "Mastering Black and White Digital Photography" by Michael Freeman, which is truely a "comprehensive" exploration on the subject.
Nothing here not in 20 other photoshop books.......2005-12-15
I tried to like the book. However its not very well laid out and what content it has can be found in just about any other photoshop book. Really the main gripe here is that the book is poory laid out. The information is not presented clealy and the pages are very busy and hard to read.

Book Description
In the summer of 1973, artist Gordon Matta-Clark discovered that the city of New York occasionally auctioned improbably tiny and frequently inaccessible parcels of land created by zoning eccentricities. Fascinated by these spaces, he bought 15 of them (14 in Queens, and 1 in Staten Island) for between $25 and $75 each, photographed them, and collated the photographs with the appropriate deeds and maps. He called the project Fake Estates. Odd Lots: Revisiting Gordon Matta-Clark's "Fake Estates" further documents and advances this seminal work, and accompanies Cabinet magazine's exhibition at the Queens Museum of Art and White Columns in New York. Included here are responses to Matta-Clark's original artwork by 20 contemporary artists including Francis Als, Jimbo Blachly, Mark Dion, Sarah Oppenheimer, Dan Price, and Mierle Ukeles. Odd Lots also provides the definitive Fake Estates history, thus adding new dimension to the scholarship on this important artist*all within the spirit of collaboration and experimentation that marked Matta-Clark's short, but influential career.

Popeye Vol. 1: "I Yam What I Yam" (Popeye)
ASIN: 1560976918 |
Book Description
The punk art legend sends his best-loved character into Dante's Inferno.
"Don't try to pass a pop quiz on Dante's Hell based on a reading of this comic," warns Gary Panter. "It won't work. Even though the comic is engorged with Dante's Hell and though Jimbo mouths a super-condensed version of what happens in The Infierno, canto by canto, characters are fused, actions inverted, parodied, subject to mutation by my odd memories and obsessions and whims
"
That said, Jimbo's Inferno is the hugely anticipated sequel (or prequel, as it was actually completed first) to Jimbo In Purgatory. In this oversize hardcover cloth-and-gold-finished volume, produced to the same exacting standards as 2004's Purgatory, Jimbo, accompanied by his trusty guide and ride Valise, visits Hell (here envisioned as a gigantic subterranean shopping mall called Focky Bocky), and in so doing runs across minotaurs, drug-addled punkettes, UFOs, giant robots, and more, leading him to such profound questions as, "Why do so many recreational activities involve smoke and heat?"
Panter's wild Albrecht-Dürer-meets-Jack-Kirby graphics are wilder and more hallucinatory than ever, and given the full, expansive treatment they so richly deserve.

A MASTERPIECE.......2005-11-23
Panter's been around forever, but for my money, this represents his apex. Jimbo's existential journeys, involving lots of injuries and countless band-aids, represent the punk aesthetic of the late 70s as well as a subversion of that aesthetic. (Huh?? What does he MEAN??) Panter draws the way Brando acts or Ali boxes: as an instinctive expression that is untamed by too much thought. Here, in "Jimbo," he achieves perfection.

Customer Reviews:
Poor binding mars otherwise terrific book........2006-09-24
A beautiful book filled with beautiful pictures of beautiful (and bizzare) Japanese toys. What more could one ask for? Well, how about a book that stays in one piece for more than 30 minutes. After less than half an hour of gentle reading the wraparound cover became unglued from the rest of the book. I'll glue the cover back on and cross my fingers nothing more comes loose, but this is a hassle, and not the first time such a thing has happened with a Chronicle Book: my copy of Eric Kohler's "In the Groove" found itself In the Trash soon after both cover and pages came loose from the el-cheapo glue binding. Message to Chronicle Books: it's the 21st Century, and high time books be bound to last more than a day. Either have your current printer improve his binding, or get a new printer. And yes, I'd be willing to pay a little more for better binding. My rating: content = 5 stars, presentation = 1 star.
I can't believe it . . ........2005-12-13
I, too, am disappointed by the negative reviews of this book. Collectors (which, sadly, I am not) will recognize that this book is not intended to be a catalog, but a showcase of some of the strange and beautiful Japanese toys.
I loved the photography, and the serious time and effort that must have went into each shot. There is at least one (and probably more) fanatic behind this book, that's for sure.
I found this book in a thrift store (who would give such a treasure away?), and knew that I must own it. The characters are so bizarre, yet sometimes, strangely, familiar. Only later did I discover that this is the work of Jimbo Matison, whose "Space Is Dum" webtoon was already deeply imbedded in my psyche (check it out, if you can find it).
This book also spawned a great game in my house. My wife opens the book to a random page, and we both make up a name for the character depicted (as I said, I am not a collector, and know few of their names). We are, sadly, never close, but we try.
I look forward to more twisted stuff from Jimbo in the future.
Nice book very comical!.......2005-10-08
Beautiful photos and nice book on vinyl japanese toys.

WONDERFUL PRESENTATION OF A MARVELOUS COLLECTION!.......2003-06-25
I can't believe the 2 kill-joys on this page. These are the guys I try to block from my ebay auctions when I can : picky, shrill & NO HUMOR (or soul for that matter).
I've bought sold & collected tons of robots & space toys over the past 20 years or so, yet many of these characters I haven't seen at all except in the tiny little fliers accompanying some of the boxes. This is a MAGNIFICENT SELECTION! Posed, composed & shot with loving perfection! Every turn of the page is a delightful surprise.
The only drawback is that it makes me want to start all over & fill my shelves with these guys. Argggh...oh no, not again. Gasp - all that dusting....
[...]Free shipping is a steal for this book!.......2003-06-24
This book is a must have for Japanese vinyl doll collectors or for those who appreciate awesome pictures. The book could have featured more vinyls, but I'm not complaining.

McSweeney's Issue 13 (Mcsweeney's Quarterly Concern)
ASIN: 1560975725 |
Book Description
The founder of "Punk" art reinvents Dante through his character Jimbo in this landmark graphic novel.
Gary Panter has been one of America's pre-eminent designers and cartoonists of the last quarter century: In addition to being a prolific and sought-after illustrator, he was one of the graphic minds behind the award-winning Pee-wee's Playhouse show, and, as the creator of Jimbo, one of the pillars of the legendary RAW magazine. Panter's early graphics defined the California punk ethos and the alternative zine sceneand although he hasn't achieved the notoriety of Keith Haring or Kenny Scharf, the post-Pop painting world is also deeply in his debt. Now, Fantagraphics is proud to present a major, all-new book by Panter: Jimbo in Purgatory.
In this spectacular graphic novel, Panter has transformed his protean punk hero Jimbo into the protagonist of a reinterpretation of Dante's Purgatorio. After years of comparing Dante and Boccaccio to find commonalities between the two, Panter developed a narrative of his own that includes literary and pop references regularly injected throughout the captions of the reinterpreted cantos.
In Panter's adaptation, Jimbo traverses a vast infotainment-testing center built in the shape of Dante's Mount Purgatory. Within its borders every man or robot stands in for a character in the Divine Comedy. In this version all the participants in the drama must respond to one another within a lunatic logic wherein each quotes a literary fragment that demonstrates their respective knowledge of a particular passage and its import to the specific location in a poem.
Presented in a huge, oversize hardcover format (even bigger than the classic RAW!) to do justice to Panter's densely packed pages, with a stunning two-color stamping on the cloth covers, Jimbo in Purgatory is an art object, a brilliant literary game, a visual feast, and the most eye-popping, visually and verbally challenging, and memorable new graphic novel of the year.
Customer Reviews:
In A Class Of Its Own.......2006-12-19
I was sorely disappointed in this book. After I read the introduction, in which Panter describes what the book is about, I almost threw it across the room.
Jimbo takes the place of Dante, author of The Divine Comedy, the robot Valise takes the place of Virgil, and all the other characters represent/symbolize characters out of The Divine Comedy. They are all traversing Mount Purgatory, which is a "...vast infotainment testing center...and all the participants strive for University degrees in literature. Each must respond with a literary fragment, a quotation, that demonstrates a knowledge of the passage and an ability to quote other works alluding to the theme of that location in the poem, and in addition, to designate, by that utterance, the story of Boccaccio's Decameron that is allied to Dante's canto and to allude to the metaphorical sum and difference of the pairing of that allusion."
If this raises you're blood pressure, you might enjoy this book. Personally, I find it pretentious. But I persevered and began reading it. Here's a sample quote from Valise, representative of all of the characters, "I have shown him guilty gloom-rockers of focky bocky enhumed in wrath and havoc." I admit, I'm taking the quote out of all context, but after four pages of this kind of dialogue, I couldn't continue. The artwork and layout of the panels is detailed and striking, perfectly produced for this over-sized book, yet the awkwardness and disproportion of the characters is jarring. And everything you can think of is referenced, from the Bible and Chaucer to Kato, Elvis, and Boy George, all acknowledged below the panels.
But what turned me off the most is the lack of feeling. This is purely an intellectual exercise. If you like that kind of thing, this might be the Holy Grail, but if you're looking to get emotionally involved in a story with realistic characters, look elsewhere.
Lost in Pop Purgatory!!!.......2004-09-05
Weeewh! I'll not use too many words to say that this book is simply amazing... so clever, so rich, so well-done, so brainy, so quirky... and full of many literary and pop references (from Milton to Tiny Tim, from Godzilla to Chaucer, from "Westworld" to Frank Zappa... and much much more). Also Beautiful packaged and with a classy gilded cover! Great work Mr. Panter, you're always one of the coolest guys around... great work man!
Buy it or die (and eventually go to the real Purgatory)!!!

Book Description
Based on the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference lectures presented by Miwa in June 1993, this book surveys recent developments in the interplay between solvable lattice models in statistical mechanics and representation theory of quantum affine algebras. Because results in this subject were scattered in the literature, this book fills the need for a systematic account, focusing attention on fundamentals without assuming prior knowledge about lattice models or representation theory. After a brief account of basic principles in statistical mechanics, the authors discuss the standard subjects concerning solvable lattice models in statistical mechanics, the main examples being the spin $1/2$ XXZ chain and the six-vertex model. The book goes on to introduce the main objects of study, the corner transfer matrices and the vertex operators, and discusses some of their aspects from the viewpoint of physics. Once the physical motivations are in place, the authors return to the mathematics, covering the Frenkel-Jing bosonization of a certain module, formulas for the vertex operators using bosons, the role of representation theory, and correlation functions and form factors. The limit of the $XXX$ model is briefly discussed, and the book closes with a discussion of other types of models and related works.
