One of the simplest and least expensive ways to dramatically alter a home is through the use of paint and color, and yet by far the largest number of people choose white and off-white paints for the bulk of their painting at home out of fear of making a mistake, opting for mundane and "safe" over dramatic and fun. This practical workbook takes the guesswork out of choosing color combinations for living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms by providing 11,264 (!) color combinations that the reader can examine by flipping over sections of the pages, changing the ceiling, wall, and floor colors in one setting for each kind of room. It is fun and exciting to see how the combinations produce dramatically different feelings for each identical space as you flip through the book, and doing so will inspire the reader to experiment and let the fantasies run wild. Unlike squinting at color swatches and trying to imagine what a room will look like with green walls, mauve floors, and a blue ceiling, all you have to do is arrange the sections of the pages, and there it is right before your eyes! This is a very inventive and very useful workbook that will inspire the timid, formerly "off-white" crowd to go for the bold and eye-catching color combinations they have always dreamed about but were reluctant to make happen. --Mark A. Hetts

Book Description

Bargain Books are non-returnable.

Change the color of a room's walls, floor, or ceiling, and the mood changes dramatically. Color can soothe or energize; make a space seem larger or more intimate; and transform ambiance -- all for a fraction of what other renovations cost. Experienced designers know what effect a change in color will have, but for most of us, repainting is something of a gamble. No longer. With The Color Book in hand, anyone can instandy see what a living room will look like with taupe walls, maple floors, and a sage ceiling, for example. More an essential design and decor tool than a book, this innovative guide takes eighty pages and divides them into three sections -- floor, walls, and ceiling -- that can be flipped separately to instantly mix-and-match a vast array of colors. Covering the bathroom, bedroom, living room, and kitchen, The Color Book visually demonstrates more than eleven thousand different color combinations offering near endless inspiration and real help in selecting the perfect color scheme. The accompanying text is an accessible guide to choosing and mixing colors, while an international color key and directory offer additional resources. A unique new way to encourage experimentation and stir the creative senses, this innovative mix-and-match method allows amateur decorators and professionals alike to discover the best colors for every room before they ever walk into a paint store.

A good book if you can accept its limitations. It has wonderful color combinations, but they are limited to foor rooms: living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens. It is spiral bound and each of three sections can be adjusted separately: floors, wall paints, and ceiling paint colors. Unfortunatley, the pages are printed on both sides, so sometimes it is impossible to get the color combinations you want. The pictures of the rooms are limited: all the furniture is examptly the same (e.g. all gray bath tubs and all birch kitchen cabinets.) It might be stretching most people's imaginations to pair a pale yellow kitchen with a purple ceiling! But the colors are beautifully and truthfully reproduced and the color combinations in the Color Key are wonderful!

As others have said, this book has almost zero how-to content. It is delightful to the eyes, however, especially for Marguerita lovers and Jimmy Buffet fans. ("Don't worry, be happy.")

It presents a lot of color combinations for those tired of off-white and beige, but too timid to make a change without reassurance. I agree that the colors are in the Carribean style, so the colors would be good for summer decorating or a decidely feminine style.

With this book, I found it easier to show my husband color combinations I liked and get his response very quickly (he even surprized me!).

I agree with other reviewers that this book is not high on content - BUT it is a good starting point for those wishing to add some elements of color to their lives. You can get this book in Pottery Barn (& such) so this should give you an idea of the content. I think it is worth a few bucks as a jumping off point for some color ideas. And why not rearrange the pages yourself - it makes it a little more useful!

5 out of 5 stars "Your Picture Perfect Wedding" truly lives up to its title .......2007-05-08

In "Your Picture Perfect Wedding", award winning wedding photographer Galina Vitols has teamed up with seasoned writer for national bridal publications Mia Johnson to provide non-specialist general readers with a thoroughly 'bride & groom friendly' guide for selecting exactly the right wedding photographer for their very special day. Weddings are such important occasions that a lot of money and planning go into them, vows are exchanged, and a sanctioned life-time commitment put into effect. It's the photographs taken in documenting this very special event that provide a kind of family heirloom and one that can never simply be re-done if not accomplished properly the first time. "Your Picture Perfect Wedding" lays out all the steps to evaluate and secure an appropriate photographer, the kinds of pictures to expect and require, even what to do with those photos that provide a visual record of such an important and memorable occasion. There's even a terrific chapter on 'Finding Love and Great Wedding Photographs - The Second Time Around'. "Your Picture Perfect Wedding" truly lives up to its title and is enthusiastically recommended reading for anyone contemplating matrimony.

For 17 dollars I was expecting more. It is more like a pamplet you pick up in the check outline for 2 dollars. The information is fine, just not much of it. The printing is fine, but looks like it was done on a computer printer and almost homemade. Check out the product dimensions close. I am sending it back. BUY IT USED....

This book is amazing! I am recommending it to all the girls I know who are planning a wedding. It covers everything and things you normally wouldn't think about until it is too late. It is written in a refreshing context and you can tell these two young ladies love what they do! I highly recommend this book to all upcoming brides and their mothers. Thank you so much for sharing in you knowledge and doing it in such an entertaining presentation. A must read!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Comprehensive Wedding Photography Books Ever Written!.......2007-02-21

It is truly a book for both brides and wedding photographers. Its step-by-step helpfulness and personal commentary has you feeling like you're actually having a personal dialogue with two people who know their subject thoroughly. It is beautifully edited and written, the pictures are incredible and both Mia and Galina treat the reader with a much appreciated honesty and respect, something that seems to be missing in most 'how to' books of this day and age. Both Galina and Mia stress the importance of teamwork, trust and a best laid out plan for both wedding photographer and bride and they couldn't have made the subject of wedding photography any simpler to understand. Brides should never see a wedding photographer without reading this book first. It should be required reading for every bride-to-be. A truly magnificent and entertaining read!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Slightly out of date..........2007-09-23

As other reviewers have said, this is for the bride, but may be helpful to wedding photographers. As a wedding photographer (beginning assistant) I found the poses Mr. Sint suggests timeless. I like that he also explained 'why' you should do the pose: IE: Hold your bouquet here rather than here for a more slimming effect. Tilt your head slightly downward to prevent the glare on your glasses... pretty elementary stuff, so professional photographers may find the book useless. Mr. Sint seems to downplay digital as being inferior to film and that's the main thing that really 'out-dates' this book. As do some of the pictures ... BUT for a first-time bride it's nice to have it all there before you: without a lot of advertising in-between like the bridal magazines. Your 'must have' shots list is there, as well as explaining different types of wedding photography at different budget levels.

2 out of 5 stars out of date even when published.......2005-04-26

A bride purchasing this book to get advice and information on wedding photography will be provided with grossly outdated information on digital photography. It is amazing that a book last published in 2004 would provide so much misinformation on digital photography and no information on the wide range of digitally created wedding albums available.

All newpaper photographers, many fashion photographers, and most wedding photographers have either switched to digital or are in the process of doing so. Digital is less forgiving of photographers mistakes, and some photographers having become comfortable over a period of many years and made a sizeable investiment in time and money in medium format camera equipment, are reluctant to start the learning and purchasing process all over again with digital equipment.

The top wedding photographers espousing a more creative approach to wedding photography, including Joe Bussink, Becker, Bambi Cantrell, and Denis Regie long ago made the switch to digital. What Sint fails to mention is that with digital equipment photographers are not limited by how many rolls of film they can carry. A traditional photographer working with mdium format equipment will be happy to end the day with 300 images. A photographer using digital equipment covering a typical wedding will end the day with over 2000 images. More moments captured, and the option to have any image in color or Black & White or both (color for mom's book, and B&W for the bride and groom's album).

Sint also talks about the short life of inkjet prints, though these are sprayed with a laquer to extend their life beyond the rated 25 years (which assumes they sit exposed to bright sunlight over thouse 25 years, or the problem with color negative film as it ages and becomes brittle. The commercial printers using high end Epson or HP printers produce prints with an expected life of over 75 years, and with digital it is not a problem to produce a new print if the old one hung on the wall in bright sunlight fades.

Most wedding photographers provide a copy of the high resolution digital negatives to their clients on their wedding anniversary at no charge. No conventional film based wedding photographer will give up their medium format negatives unless it is for a hefty fee.

As of 2004 when this book was published there are a number of digital cameras that produce better images than is possible with medium format film cameras. And Sint fails to mention that 95% of the brides only get an album with the most common size being a 10x10 inch with the largest picture a 8x10 print.

The most dated information and glaring omission is Sint's coverage of wedding albums. Most brides will spend more than half the price of their wedding photography on the cost of an album, and Sint provides no mention of the digitally created albums. There is also a revolution in wedding albums that has resulted from the availability of high quality digital negatives. Coffee table book style albums that have each page printed can contain any number of images, can have artistic backgrounds, off center placement and all the other imaging one associates with modern magazines, available to the bride at less expense than she would pay for a traditional wedding album with individual prints pasted into individual and expensive mount pages. This approach enables the skilled photographer to tell the story of the wedding day instead of just present a collection of posed stiff pictures like what was done for the brides grandmother and grandfather.

Taking film negatives and having them scanned to produce digital negatives adds a great deal of expense and produces images that are inferior to "first generation" images produced by professional grade cameras available for the past several years.
If the bride takes a look at the images produced by a wedding photographer using film cameras, she will notice that the reception shots where the lighting is usually quite low, are taken using either a great deal of flash which produces an unnatural look, or were shot with grainy high speed Black & White film. The look of grainy B&W images can be quite nice but it is not something that works all the time. With the current generation of digital cameras color images can be taken in low light situations that with film cameras would require B&W film.

Digital also greatly reduces the risk of malfunctioning equipment during the wedding, and eliminates the risk of film not being delivered to the lab, or the lab incorrectly processing the film and destroying the only copy of the pictures taken during the day. The bride should be asking the photographer whether they are covered for "errors and omissions" and verify that their insurance policy is current. Having a full set of backup equipment is even more important. Wedding photographers do not get a "second take" and if one piece of gear fails they need a backup so they can keep on taking pictures.

Sint should be recommending that the bride look at the images produced by the photographers for other brides, examine the photographers' different styles and approaches through the images they have taken for previous weddings and select one that is compatible with that of the bride. The prospective bride should look at the wedding albums actually produced to see if the end product is what she wants. What equipment the photographer used to capture the images, make the prints, and produce the album is largely irrelevant.

5 out of 5 stars The Bride's Guide to Wedding Photography.......2004-05-24

This is a MUST BUY for EVERY bride. Whether your photography plans are a disposable camera or a carriage-trade professional photographer, Steve Sint tells brides how to get the best wedding pictures. Even if you're already hired a photographer, he tells you how to stand, how to wear your hair and makeup, how to choose a wedding gown, even how to walk in it, to ensure that you get the best photos possible. As Steve says in his book, the ring and the photos are about all you'll still have 50 years later, so choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions made by every bride. Don't forget -- Steve literally wrote the book on wedding photography. His "Wedding Photography: Art, Business and Style" is the Bible of weddding photographers across the country. Now he shares his expertise with the bride. This book should become as standard as a copy of Bride magazine. As a professional writer and part-time professional photographer, I highly recommend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed.......2004-05-24

This book is great, it really helped me with my wedding plans, more than just picking photographers, it also has other suggestions about flowers, gowns, and timing for the day. The author obviously knows what he is talking about and knows the bride's concerns. Also, there are beautiful pictures. It looks like a fancy magazine. I am so happy I bought this book. Even my fiance read parts of it. I recommend this to anyone planning a wedding whether it is big or small. This covers it all and gives practical advice.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! Not just for brides, but for photopgraphers too........2004-04-04

The author spares no detail with his complete guide for the perfect wedding memories all the way to making sure everyone looks their best within any budget.

His clear, relaxed writing style never speaks down to the reader and kept me interested from beginning to end. There are countless ideas, lists, and suggestions that are paired with great photos to demonstrate his recommendations throughout.

I bought this book as a gift for my niece since she is getting married. And, because I am my families "official photographer" she asked me to help. Now, after reading it cover to cover, I will have to buy her a second copy so that my gift to her is brand new and not dog-eared.

The book is jam packed with great information. It can be helpful to all brides whether they hire a professional or just have a relative (like me!) or a friend take their
pictures. The author went so far as to include info on wedding gowns, flower options and simple things that can make a big difference, like how to stand to look your best. I just loved all the pictures in this book. It gave me lots of ideas to work with. Every bride should have this on their bridal registry wish list.... and any photographer (pro or otherwise) should have one too.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Wedding Resource.......2006-04-10

When I selected our wedding photographer, I had no idea how to evaluate a studio or even which shots I wanted to capture before, during and after the ceremony. With Kathleen Hawkins book these two important bridal issues are quickly resolved, with a must-have photo list and specific interview questions that will make professional photographers share the same vision as your own.

Having the most intimate event of one's life preserved in film and trusting a studio to do so is one of the most challenging tasks anyone can undertake. Kathleen understands the potential frustration of couples and explains the contractual obligations of the photographer in every day language, but then she goes one step further and details how to make the engagement photo session a trial run for the wedding. Personally, I found it hard to warm up to my wife during our session, but with Kathleen's tips on what to bring and how to relax during the session, we could have had much more memorable engagement photographs.

The tone of the book is how to get the most out of your wedding experience and preserve those memories in photographs. Kathleen illustrates her commitment to readers and this tone by dedicating a chapter to creating three different timelines of events depending on your wedding ceremony style and traditions. Book Description

Tiny Bubbles is the newest graphic novel from cartoonist James Kochalka. Magic Boy's hypochondria gets the best of him in Kochalka's most ambitious graphic novel yet. A chance meeting with an action-painting robot forces Magic Boy to contemplate the meaning of art and his own technophobia. Heady stuff leavened with Kochalka's usual bratty humor and thick brushstrokes. Tiny Bubbles is a wacky masterpiece by one of the strongest new talents in comics!

5 out of 5 stars The Vanishing Genre.......2006-02-13

Given that the genre is disappearing for some reasons not very clear to me, this graphic novel by cartoonist & novelist James Kochalka still amused me when I had found it again on the shelf and read it the second time.

4 out of 5 stars Reclaim your forgotten childhood sensibilities!.......1999-03-05

It may not seem like much at first glance, but James Kochalka has a charming style that endears his readers to his work. His main character, Magic Boy (based on the author himself), could easily represent the child in each of us. He's curious, unsure about life, in need of affection and always looking for a good time. Consequently, 'Tiny Bubbles' captures all the sense of wonder most of us have long since forgotten we used to have.
