5 out of 5 stars A planner with a vision.......2003-07-03

Le Corbusier has a dream for Paris, and it is a really interesting and unusual one. He creates a model for the cities, and his model has been living for almost a century. Although, you may reject to see it built, put aside living in it, it is a complete (well, almost complete) model. In this book, Le Corbusier presents his model city in detail from streets to building codes. He not only talks about the physical structure, but also the life style it would create. The mass of the city scares you, but you admire how he defends his vision, which is strong and bold, just like the book itself.

5 out of 5 stars Must-read for any architecture buff!.......1999-09-05

As an architecture student interested in the "art" of city planning, I found this book fascinating! Gives Le Corbusier's "radical" views and ideas plenty of substantive support. It is not only a book of design theory, but a book of urban history. Even if you're not too fond of Corbusier's work, this is a must-read for anyone interested in architecture!

                Book Description

This groundbreaking book takes the reader behind the closed doors of the editing room where Sam O'Steen along with some of the world's top directors controlled the fate of many legendary films. Editors don't usually sit on movie sets, but Sam was there through the entire shoot and his editing tales are spiced with juicy anecdotes about exotic locations and colorful producers, directors, and stars.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling mix of a master at work and celebrity intriques.......2002-03-29

This book documents the creative evolution of the editor's role in Hollywood. Sam and Bobbie O'Steen weave a fascinating tale of how Sam worked his way from messenger at Warner Bros. to 'a pair of hands cutter' to master artist crafting the most amazing films that emerged after the fall of the studio system: "Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf", "Catch 22","Carnal Knowledge", "Chinatown". He worked with the top artists of his time and shares many unique and special anecdotes about them. Along the way he gives us insight into a master editor at work, writing about the choices and changes that can make a good film, great. A great addition to film fan or film students library.

                5 out of 5 stars Required Reading.......2002-03-23

Sam and Bobbie O'Steen have given us an exceptional mix of Sam's takes on all the elements that go into movie making - human, technical, personalities, talent/no talent and gossip - in a way that made me feel as though I was in a living room listening to Sam O'Steen tell stories. What a treat.

Sam O'Steen's editor's view of movie making combined with quite a cutting sense of life is unique. His throw away lines about some executives and stars are very telling. His generosity talking about editing brings great sense to the whole movie making process, and his body of work (Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe, The Graduate, Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, Catch 22, Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood, Working Girl, and all the rest...) allows him to speak with an earned cockiness. This book is a treasure for anyone who loves movies.

5 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended for any film student or movie buff.......2002-03-21

Cut To The Chase: Forty-five Years Of Editing America's Favorite Movies is a rare look into the film editor's trade. In the format of an extended interview of Hollywood legend Sam O'Steen, editor of such renowned movies as "The Graduate," "Chinatown," and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?", and with the assistance of his wife, Bobbie O'Steen (herself an experienced writer and former film editor) covers all aspects of the creative movie making process as it really is in the lumbering, confusing, and sometimes merciless machine that is Hollywood. Showcasing the stars that he worked with, and much more, Cut To The Chase is very highly recommended for any film student or movie buff curious about what really goes on behind the silver screen.

3 out of 5 stars not as much actual editing info as expected.......2002-02-18

While I do recomend this book as a good insight into the politics of making a major motion picture, I found it lacking in the one area it should have exceled in-editing. As an editor myself I was looking for more insight to O'Steen's thought process and editiorial technique and less behind the scenes gossip. Skip all the chapters after "Chinatown". It is a good read up to that point.

                5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For Film Fans.......2002-02-10

This is one of the best books about the film business I've ever read. Legendary film editor Sam O'Steen tells all about his craft and about the importance of the relationship between editor and director. In doing so, we learn how the editor's role was crucial in shaping some of the greatest films of the last forty years including Who's Afraid Of Virgina Wolf, The Graduate, Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood and others. The book is the transcribed conversations between Sam and his wife and fellow editor, Bobbie O'Steen. It is remarkably intimate and wonderful in its backstage gossip as Bobbie gets a great performance from Sam, a classic storyteller who pulls no punches. Critical insight into the technique of filmmaking is mixed with racous and often breathtaking tales of Hollywood before parents began sending their kids to film school as an alternative to being a doctor.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mentally Magnetic, Mignola and his Tasty Chums.......2002-10-04

This collection of shorts, created by some of the most prolific minds in the comic arena, couples the realms of silliness with a childlike darkness, giving the reader something to laugh at sometimes while wondering if this should induce laughter at all. Thirty-six pieces exist here, some little blurbs that are semi-enjoyable, others bigger, more captivating oddities on parade, and still others, like Mike Mignola's Au Gung and the Beanstalk, are something to purchase editions like this one because of.
The better pieces included here are:

Abu Gung and the Beanstalk, by Mike Mignola, is the story of a Gung man who happens across a tale only Mignola could have crafted. It comes from one of three sisters, two of them starving, that speaks of former riches and squandered fortunes, of jewels traded for food and of one sister, the greediest of the lot, trading her's for some magic beans. Deciding they were rightfully her's to consume, she shares them not and suffers a most horrible fate. A beanstalk rips through her chest and ascends to the sky, dancing far from the reach of men. Abu, plagued by curiosity, decides to climb it and see just what awaits in the sky, and what he finds is wonderfully entertaining and well worth the read. It alone elevates the book to wondrous proportions.

Fisher Price Theatre Presents: George Orwell's 1984, by Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer, is a wonderful depiction of 1984 through the use of everyone's favorite Fisher Price people. It takes memorable scenes, giving you a sculpted view of Orwell's vision in a nutshell. This, in my opinion, is also one of the best, most creative pieces here, ranking with the likes of Abu Gung and makes people like myself truly appreciate the minds behind it.

Pip and Norton in the Spinning Buddha, by Dave Copper and Gavin Mcinnes, is a three-part tale depicting Pip and the obsessive links he'll go to in acquiring the newest fad, The Spinning Buddha with flaming Zycbrobe action and patented spin-o-rama action.

Wanita and Glenn, by Craig Tompson, is simply a page filler with a semi-cutesy fill. Still, for some reason, blobs talking in barcode really touches something inside my soul.

Sour Milks: A tragedy in Five Pages, by Pat McEown, is an odd tale of crime and misfortune brought about by soured milk.

The Misadventures of Tommy T-Rex, by Brian McDonald and Brain O'Connell, is a wonderful piece about a young T-Rex and the extents to which he has to go to fit in with otherwise human counterparts. I think it sums it up in this conversation between Tommy and his human father. Tommy: "I miss my old friends." Father: "Well then you probably shouldn't have eaten them!" Its hilarity at its finest and deserves acclaim as well.

Life Could be a Dream Starring Montgomery Wart, by Mark Martin, is about an amphibian youth and his adventures in a surreal day of skipping school. I found it youthfully enjoyable and worth a read.

Hook, Line and Sinker: A castle waiting Short Story, by Linda Medley, was an enjoyable excursion into the fanciful, dealing with, amongst other things, a wonderful little demon trying to claim itself a youthfully naive soul.

Dog Drool Jewel, by David Sheldon, is a nice little commercial about mass marketing dog drool in dog drool jewels.

Bugged, by Sergio Aragones, is about an out-of-work extraterrestrial habitation engineer who is married to a woman who is, in turn, married to her work. Unfortunately for him (and for her) it happens to be Lepidopterology, the study of insects. Well, after snapping and running off to hide in space, he finds himself surrounded by three beautiful women conducting research. Sounds get? Maybe not.

Maxwell Escapes to Gillsville, by Dave Clegg, is the story of a fish named Maxwell that thinks he'll escape to a paradise called Gillsville by playing dead.

Rock, Paper, Scissors, by Evan Dorkin, depicting the evolution of struggle between these three, chronicling such events as Scissors sacrificing Paper to Satan and Paper using influential political and media contacts to malign rock and scissors.

Pip and Norton in Zzzombie Grrll, by Dave Cooper and Gavin Mcinnes, showing us Pip and his new love interest, a wonderful brain-eating sweetheart of a girl.

And, another one of the greats, The Musical Lump Wagon, by Craig Thompson, depicting for us the capture, slave trade, and monetary manipulation of lumps by the manipulative tweak of electricity.

Also included are The Particklers, by Kilian Plunkett, Kid Cyclops, by Steven Guarnaccia, Mud Monkeys, by James Kochalka, Pirates Featuring Tom the Dinosaur + Tom + Rainy Day Featuring Tom the Dinosaur (3 stories), by Daniel Torres, Bronco Teddy, by Jim Woodring and Tom Dougherty, Tales of Red Erchie, A Northern Fantasy, by Steve Parkhouse and Keith Young, Bring on the Robots, by Pat McEown,Oddette, by Jay Stephens, The Cluck of Fear, by Chris Garbutt, The Poet Who Loved Tea, by Greg C. Clarke, Ancient Joe, C.S. Morse. While these are bunched together, not all are bad. Some are better than others, some are bottom feeders, but the artists all got paid, so what the heck?

Anyhow, this collection is, by and far, something that anyone should go out and pick up because it has all the elements that the growing mind sadistically needs. People of all ages, lumps included, should get out there and consume!

3 out of 5 stars Very typical Niven collection.......2007-02-20

Like most of his collections so far (N-Space, etc), this is filled with some short stories, some essays, and excerpts from the novels he's promoting at the time the collection was written. I love the short stories and the essays about writing the novels. Unfortunately, this collection has a lot more of the novel excerpts, and felt more like a "coming soon from Niven Productions" than a real addition to my collection of Niven works.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent read... More Random Thoughts from Larry Niven's Brain..........2007-01-23

I was delighted to get my hands on Scatterbrain, as I've enjoyed previous "Random Thoughts from Larry Niven's Brain" books in the past. It marries excerpts and short stories with information on the writing process, stories from SciFi Cons, etc. It was well worth what I paid for it, and only continues to confirm why Mr. Niven is one of the TOP hard science SciFi writers of our time.

                2 out of 5 stars Dumpster-diving at the Nivens's.......2005-03-08

How can you know that you are really, really famous? One strong hint would be that people are willing--even happy--to pay good money for a reprint of your old emails. On that criterion, and based on the cheerful other reviews, Larry Niven is really, really famous.

Don't get me wrong; on my shelves are 22 books with Niven's name on the spine. But this one is a shoddy collection of castoffs, cobbled together not (I hope) by Niven himself, but by some marketing droid desperate to have some more Niven "product" to sell. It contains four actual stories totalling 100pp; the rest is trivial filler, including the above-mentioned printout of emails.

Those might be of interest to a PhD candidate in English writing a thesis on"Collaborative Methods In Science Fiction of the 1990s" -- but they are really for the wanna-be SF writer who wants to fantasize that he or she is among the lucky handful who actually get to collaborate with Larry Niven. In fact the emails are no more interesting than email between you and your co-workers. There's no writerly advice from Larry to his pals, no "here's the golden secret of good plotting." You could read a megabyte of such email and be not one adverb closer to publication of your work.

The rest of the trivia includes brief, uninteresting excerpts from novels; old, short, and dated essays; a report on a trip to an SF Con; a brief intro to someone else's book; and fragments of the "canon" (i.e. notes) on the milieu of the Man-Kzin Wars.

This stuff is just sweepings from the writer's office floor. They show you nothing of Niven's imagination or plotting skills. Their content would have near-zero interest but for the fact that they were not swept up from your office floor, but from Larry Niven's.

The editing is shoddy as well. There's no publication information at all (no citations for published items, no dates for unpublished ones). There's just no way to tell what has been published before, nor where. For example, half of the 100pp of actual fiction is a story, "Procrustes," but there's no hint that it was previously published as part of Crashlander (Ballantine, 1994). The lack of this data makes the book irritating to read (ok, when WAS this Intercon he reports on?), and useless as scholarly source material.

This book is for the library of an obsessive Niven completist collector. Ordinary readers will do well to save their $7.

                4 out of 5 stars A Truly Scatterbrained Collection.......2004-12-02

This latest collection from Larry Niven lives up to its title. The subject matter is all over the place with novel excerpts, stories, essays, logs, e-mails, and notes.

Unfortunately for Niven fans, this collection came out late enough that they will probably have all of the novels excerpted here. But there are also tales of Gil Hamilton, Beowulf Shaefer, and Draco's Tavern. We are also treated to communications between Mr. Niven and collaborators and editors that helps to show how ideas come to fruition.

Mr. Niven also talks about how his mind works. Sort of a slower da Vinci, Niven spawns ideas and pushes them to their conclusions in almost frightening ways. He calls himself scatterbrained but really he can just see the path of an idea and where it leads (i.e. heat exchangers on Pluto).

The other drawback to the collection is it seems too short. It isn't, but it seems that way. If you have already read the novels excerpted, the rest seems to fly by just a little too quickly. Of course most of the reason is that it reads well and thus faster. Still, I can't help but feel it will be too long before I get another crack at a fresh collection from one of my favorite authors.

4 out of 5 stars A thin new collection with a few "must have" stories.......2004-06-25

This is a fun little collection, not to be confused with the huge omnibus collections like N-Space or Playgrounds of the Mind. Still, the shorter collections of Larry Niven's work have never, to my knowledge, been out of print and for good reason. His short fiction is always amoung the most entertaining (his novels ain't bad either).

Although I'd read most of this book's contents elsewhere, it's nice to finally have Procrustes or the most recent Gil Hamilton story bound up in a volume. And the book benefits nicely from Niven's "Harlan Ellison-esque" personal introductions, foreward and epilogue.

On the downside, the back of this book is a bit thin on content and there are lengthy email exchanges with his collaborators reproduced. It's amusing "inside baseball" stuff, but really there isn't enough material to sustain this book (certainly in hardcover).

The fiction is worth the price of admission, for me at least, and the personal pieces are all good fun. Still, I'd prefer if Niven wrote some more fiction...

                Book Description

That Sam! He's got one heck of a puzzler. Folks are talking about what a scatterbrain he is what with his keeping the cow on the roof, sleeping in his Sunday britches, and eating his soup with a pitchfork. How's he going to get his brains all gathered together?

He seeks the help of the widder woman to see if she ain't got a potion that can whip his brains into shape. Turns out she's brewing a batch of glue stew right then, but Sam's got to help. In lieu of adding his beloved pets to the ingredients, Sam must solve a few riddles. But his brains are so scattered, it takes one Amazin' Maisie Mae to help him out - and she's more than happy to lend Sam her brains.

Read Scatterbrain Sam, adapted from a Welsh folk tale by the clever brain of Ellen Jackson, to find out the exciting, dramatic, and heart-warming culmination of Sam's quest.

Sam, as you might guess, is a little lacking in the gray matter department. Why, the fellow is so addlepated that he carries an alarm clock instead of a wristwatch, and travels to town by attaching a sail to his truck.

Well, Mensa candidate or not he's still one of the nicest boys around. But, he would like to have some help with his brains so he consults Widder Woman who promises, "I got something that'll fix your noggin, boy. You ever hear tell of glue stew?"

Sam's pleased as he thinks that potion will glue his brains together. That's especially important now because Sam is smitten with Maizie, so taken with her that when he sees her he grins "like a possum in a peanut patch."

One problem is that Maizie's as smart as a whip, and Sam is not. Second problem is that Maizie topples into the pot of glue stew.

Young readers learn that even the most daunting obstacles can be overcome with courage, tenacity, and a heart of gold!
