The Fellowship: The Untold Story of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Taliesin Fellowship
ASIN: 0764913352 |
Book Description
Cornelia Brierly was one of the first apprentices to attend Frank Lloyd Wright's school of architecture. Before long, she was a working colleague of the master architect; during the last thirty years of his career, she made important design contributions to many of his building projects. Brierly has spent most of her life at Wright's Taliesin (Wisconsin) and Taliesin West (Arizona).
This lavishly illustrated memoir tells the story of nearly seventy years spent with the Taliesin Fellowship. It is an important work, not only because of the author's closeness to the twentieth century's foremost architect but because she has observed at first hand the unfolding of organic architecture -- Wright's design precepts made manifest. In an affectionate, honest, and preceptive book, she celebrates the fellowship as a way of life and brings to life a vibrant community that is still going strong, forty years after Wright's death.
176 pages, size: 10" x 10." 150 color and black-and-white photographs, hardbound book with dust jacket.

good complementary book on Frank Lloyd Wright.......2001-01-28
This book explored the origin, the life of Frank Lloyd Wright. The author didn't discuss FLW's other works as such but did explain the nature why Taliesin & its other counterpart were built, & unbeknown to the architect would one day become 2 of the most important buildings in the States. The book contained many pictures (good quality) of the communes participating in many subsistence activities, FKW giving guidance to his disciples, lavish parties & performances that were held there, many aspects of those buildings. On the sideline, the book also displayed the graphics that were utilised by the Taliesin Foundation, Asian art works that were collected by FKW during his trip to Japan (in particular). For the benefit of the readers, building plans were enclosed to relate to the pictures provided.
Visually stunning treatment of FLW's East West homesteads........1998-09-22
The endlessly creative mind of FLW took two wildly different locales and managed to create important landmarks of twentieth-century architecture in both -- Spring Green, WI, and Scottsdale, AZ. Following a historical glimpse into Wright's origins, this beautiful volume traces the multiple purposes of Taliesin and Taliesin West. The book closes with a unique look at Wright's collect of Asian art, an important influence on his life and work. A definite treat for Wright fans, the book helps show why these two vastly different architectural gems stand as "his autobiography in wood and stone."
Book Description
"Wright fell in love with the desert quickly and profoundly," writes Lawrence W. Cheek. "It was a vast, blank canvas ... it was an open-air warehouse of natural forms, colors, and textures that both delighted and inspired him."
Frank Lloyd Wright first came to Arizona in 1928. In this spectacular desert landscape he built his winter headquarters, Taliesin West, and found a passion that drove him for the next 31 years of his life. In the first book to focus solely on Wright's work in Arizona, Lawrence W. Cheek explores the twelve breathtaking buildings that Wright contributed to the state. Cheek also delves into the audacious, mischievous, egocentric, and often outrageous life of Frank Lloyd Wright and examines today's Taliesin West, still a center of vigilant devotion to the man often called the greatest architect of the twentieth century. 50 color photos.

Nice book........2007-08-25
A nice review of some of his works in AZ, though like most books of this type too much time is spent on the well known subjects and less on the more interesting stuff.
FLlW Arizona Reprised and Updated.......2006-02-19
This is a steamlined re-telling of the Frank Lloyd Wright in Arizona story. But there is little detail beyond the Arizona Biltmore and Taliesin West. There are some nice late afternoon photos of T-West, but few of any other houses. The freshest images are of the recently constructed Arizona Capitol spire and an Apprentice shelter. Lawrence Cheek seems to have more distance than many FLlW book authors. The most interesting text is the last few pages of commentary on the FLlW franchise since Mr. Wright's death and in particular recent changes with Taliesin Architects and the FLlW Foundation.
For the Arizona houses I would still recommend Storrer or FLlW's Western Work.
Book Description
These new titles in the Building Blocks series showcase four more icons of modern architecture, as portrayed by renowned architectural photographer Ezra Stoller. Two buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwater and Taliesin West, Louis Kahn's Salk Institute, and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building are shown in original condition, with original furnishings, as the architects intended them to be seen. Wright's integration of architecture and landscape, Kahn's dramatic yet humane monumentality, and Mies's austere elegance are revealed and preserved in Stoller's classic compositions. Small, elegant, and affordable, each volume presents the photo-graphs that made these structures famous. With 60 rich duotone plates (and 16 color plates for Taliesin West), a brief introduction, and newly drawn plans, sections, and elevations, these books constitute the essential photographic histories of the most important works of modernism.

Book Description
This book tells the story of the Taliesin Fellowship, created by Frank and Olgivanna Lloyd Wright in 1932, in the words of men and women who joined the Fellowship, some as early as the 1930s, and remained with it into the 1990s. Many of the storytellers worked side by side with Wright, who died in 1959, and almost all of them lived and worked with Olgivanna Lloyd Wright, who survived her husband by 26 years. The Taliesin fellows are joined by other storytellers who have been their partners in recent years and who know the Fellowship well.
The Fellowship's origins and milestones in its history are documented here, as well as the dynamics that shaped its progress, its character, and its story. Readers will gain fresh and provocative insights into the genius and mystique of the Fellowship's creators and an understanding of Frank Lloyd Wright's amazing productivity, particularly in the last decade of his life. These stories will debunk some of the common caricatures that are a part of his legacy.
Customer Reviews:
Great Architecture, Creative People, a Unique Community.......2000-03-26
FLW's Taliesin Fellowship is a fascinating study of how an organization evolves as the people in it prosper, then age and die. The community is particularly significant because of Wright's architectural legacy, but there is so much more than the architecture involved. The stories that Fellowship members tell about the Wrights and their lives in the Taliesin community are truly compelling. If you're interested in communal societies, business development, and the creative process leading to many of Frank Lloyd Wright's greatest works, this book is essential.
A Good description of life in the Taliesin Fellowship.......1999-12-21
Myron and Shirlet Marty have given us a book that tells the story of the Taliesin Fellowship through the words of its members who have remained in what the Martys describe as "intentional community." Many of these apprentices knew and had worked with Wright before his death in 1959, most of the rest were members during the 26 years that Mrs. Wright directed the Fellowship until her death. Students of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture since that time give a hint of the future for Taliesin. The Martys interviewed these apprentices and arranged excerpts in what becomes an excellent description of life at Taliesin and the Fellowship experience from their point of view. What is needed now is a second volume, which Professor Marty has said he will consider. This would include interviews with apprentices who chose to leave Taliesin after various periods of time and for various reasons, including the feeling that Mrs. Wrights agenda varied considerably from that of Mr. Wright.

The Web Wizard's Guide to Flash.......2003-09-05
I loved this book. It is rare to have a computer book that you can read cover to cover but this is one. It is meticulously researched and written, with good questions and exercises at the end to test what you learned. The only thing I didn't understand was why there were only answers to odd questions, but it didn't really matter. Finally there were excellent online references for future learning. This is a classic.
Learn Smart Flash Design While Learning The Basics.......2003-01-15
The Web Wizard's Guide explains not only how to use Flash, but how to design with Flash. Tech-manual writers are notorious for leaving out context when describing a software interface, which makes learning most programs difficult. Kay's down-to-earth writing style simplifies the process. He uses practical, realistic examples to explain the concepts behind each menu command. He teaches you to know when to use Flash, and when not to use it. Read this book to learn good Flash design and keep the product manual around simply for reference.
My web pages have come alive after reading this book.......2002-11-01
I am a busy Art Director/Designer who, at last, is making the necessary transition from print to the web. The Web Wizard's Guide to Flash by Michael Kay has just become my most recent bible. I just love this book and can't put it down . . . it's like having your own web wizard always at your fingertips.
Michael Kay has done a great job in presenting a lot of intimidating technical information in an accessible way. The instructions are direct and clear and the language of the text is simple and friendly--not loaded with dull or confusing tech speak. The format of the book relies on well honed step-by-step technical objectives which, when applied, give fantastic results.
Best of all, I have been able to use these lessons directly in my day to day layout and design process. After working through this book, my web pages are now alive with animated motion and pizzazz, finally breaking me out of the amateur design crowd!
I highly recommend this text as a must read for any web designer or student or teacher who wants to learn and apply Flash - fast - in a painless, easy-to-read-and-use format. It should also be made more available on book store shelves in general.
Great intro to Flash for beginners.......2002-08-01
As a Flash beginner, I found this book to be the perfect starting point: concise, clearly written, and full of practical advice for creating basic Flash animations.
Kay writes in an accessible and engaging style, walking readers through basic Flash concepts like vector graphics, the stage and timeline metaphors, up through more advanced topics like coding interactive behaviors and working with sound. Finally, he introduces readers to the basics of Actionscript, the advanced Flash programming language used to create more complex applications.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this book for beginners like me who are interested in getting started with Flash.
difficult subjects made easy.......2002-08-01
as a web design instructor, i've read many books on flash and i am always looking for new reference/learning material to recommend to students. this one covers all the important topics very well. from the basic screen tour up through the nitty-gritty of actionscript, this book does a fantastic job of breaking down a difficult set of topics for a beginning flash animator. i would suggest this book to someone just starting out with the program, or for a person who's self-taught and is looking for the 'correct' way to do something. definitely a good investment.

A book to tickle anyones funny bone an hysterical collection of illustrated puns that presents the English language in a whole new light. Its the perfect gift book for the pun lover in your life or great for your own coffee table.
Customer Reviews:
Visual/Verbal Treat.......2004-11-21
Oh that every waiting room, subway car, bus, or departure lounge would have a book like this available. A sweet confection of a book that is at once both funny and clever. There is a 2005 calendar made from this book too that I have spotted around the web; both make great gifts for anyone who appreciates the idiomatic richness of our language - and a good groanful pun.
Writer plays out plays on words.......2004-04-14
We played a game around the office. We took turns reading the captions under the pictures in "Who You Callin' a Cheetah?" and guessing the accompanying picture. Here, let's play:
"Monica was jealous because Marvin was always siding with the neighbors."
Now take a guess at the illustration. If you guessed a woman nervously looking on as Marvin helps the neighbors attach siding to their house then you pretty much understand the concept behind Lloyd Leifer's first stab at professional authorship. (Insert picture of Lloyd thrusting a dagger into Stephen King here.)
Reminiscent of Gary Larson's "Far Side" strips, but lacking the biting wit, the illustrations, sketched by the capable hand of Michael Zittel, dutifully follow Leifer's gloriously obvious puns straight into coffee-table perdition.
On the other hand, it's kind of fun guessing at those pictures. Let's play again:
"As usual, the tamales disagreed with Milton."
That's right, the tamales are actually standing up on the plate arguing with a frustrated Milton. And the book goes on like that for another 80 pages.
Some people, like Leiffer, really love puns and it doesn't matter how forced, obvious, or ridiculous they may be. If you are one of those people then you are probably still laughing as you imagine Mexican food challenging a balding, overweight man named Milton and this puny paperback primer is for you.
Others, however, are still puzzling over why a lion is playing poker with a tiger and a cheetah. A fifteen-year-old, for example, who skimmed the collection of capricious cartoons, needed the cover explained three times before her eyes brightened with epiphany. This book would be good for her, too. With a little patience she could actually improve her verbal acumen, gradually grasping the multi-meanings of words like "customs," "swat," "chum," and "retainer."
Still, for the most part, making choices like "sit," "raise," and "stay," Leifer plays on simpler, duller words. (Insert picture of Leifer frolicking on top of a statuesque "blunt.")
Well-intentioned, harmless fodder for the whole family, "Cheetah" invites the readers to have some fun crafting their own puns. How bad could they be?
Pick up a copy of "Who You Callin' a Cheetah" and find out.
Great fun with puns.......2004-03-21
If you appreciate a good pun, then get ready to laugh. "Who You Callin' a Cheetah?" is a humorous collection of illustrated puns done somewhat in a style similar to Far Side. Some were so funny that I just had to share them right away, and others were only mildly humorous. Then when I shared the book with someone else they thought some of the other ones even more humorous. Well I guess that has always been the case with puns, everyone has their idea of what is funniest. It is a fairly short book and can be read through in about fifteen minutes or so at the most. I would say that it makes a nice short diversion on a busy day to pick it up and enjoy one or two of the puns except I found I couldn't put it down until I had read them all.
Another Far Side.......2004-01-21
J. Tom Cooper, a radio network book review editor., January 16, 2004,
A great source of puns and groaners
Michael Zittel and Lloyd Leifer have a winner in this book. If you don't like one illustrated pun, the next one will make you laugh. It reminds me a lot of Gary Larsen's Farside humor. It is well worth the $9.95 you pay. Put it on a coffee table or even next to the toilet for short-term diversion and laughter.
Next Step Up from the Far Side.......2004-01-18
If you loved or even liked the Far Side you have to get this book. I've even gone so far as to hang some of the jokes up in my cube. Now all my coworkers want to borrow it. The jokes are clean enough so my daughter can read it, but have the subtlety that only adults can appreciate. Check it out!
