I thought the book itself was really interesting although a little confusing. Especially when I actually had to use it for class assignments!

5 out of 5 stars Integrated Review of Two Top Books That Mesh Well.......2007-07-11

Although I normally read books in twos and threes on the same topic to gain varied perspectives, this is the first time I am writing a single review encompassing two books. They mesh together so well that I cannot imagine studying this subject without having BOTH in hand.

The two books are Sun, Wind & Light: Architectural Design Strategies, 2nd Edition and The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design.

Start with the introduction in the Guidebook, which is blessed with a Foreword from Paul Hawken and see especially page 13 where the cost benefits are shown, with 48% energy savings for Gold, 30% for Silver, and 28% for Certified. See also the illustration on page 15 that I have reproduced in the image I am loading for both books: the old decision model was Cost at the top, with Schedule and Quality anchoring the triangle. the new decision model still has cost at the top, but Schedule and Human Health, Safety, & Comfort are on corners of this new pentagon, and the bottom is achored by Quality and Ecology, or what Paul Hawken would call in his books, "true cost" to the Earth and Humanitas.

NOW shift to the Contents and the Detailed Contents of Sun, Wind, & Light. As one reviewer notes, this is a course book. I did not recognize it as such, I saw it as one of the most gifted complete collection of factors to learn and apply that I have ever seen for ANY topic of study. The content and organization of this book is nothing short of Nobel-level "wow." Finish going through this book.

NOW go back to the first 218 pages of the Handbook, and study the checklists and varied helpful boxes and explanations. The rest of the book (217-459) is case studies of specific buildings, each a few pages, that can be left for last.

At this point, I went into the Glossaries and Bibliographies of both books. Each is distinct, neither supplants the other. They must be taken together. I read Glossaries, and Indices, as content, and use them as a form of "second look" (in extremely complex books, this is actually where I start).

NOW go back to the Case Studies in the Handbook, and read each from the point of view of what "take away" lessons are there for your own building.

Reading these two books was a real treat. Outside my office kitchen is a deck with an 11 point system for attracting birds from bluebirds and bluejays to cardinals, gold finches, two kinds of woodpecker, and a flicker as well as the more common birds. I believe in diversity, and I believe that if we don't get our act together and start living up to the ideals of Natural Capitalism (see other recommended books below), our world will go sterile and dark before out great-grandchilden can share in the beauty of this planet. These two books are part of the solution, and I am in serious awe of those who made them available to all of us, and at reasonable prices to boot. Well done!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not so useful.......2007-03-09

So instead of getting a manual on how to design a building to maximize sun, wind, and light, what I got was a lengthy math book on how to quantitatively analyze the sun, light and wind in existing conditions.... There are some nuggets of good info but I don't see myself getting very much out of the book in general.

3 out of 5 stars good info poorly written.......2007-02-26

These guys need a third author (or good editor) who knows how to present ideas clearly, directly and in an intuivive manner. This information is dense enough without unnecessarily dense language which makes the material more difficult to use.

5 out of 5 stars Great book of information about one's environment.......2006-11-10

4 out of 5 stars A great reference material.......2006-06-25

For those looking for lighting basics that covers lamping, and the psychology of lighting, "Architectural Lighting Design" serves this purpose with flying colors. However if you are looking for creative solutions to lighting problems this is not the book. "ALD" though still has some helpful tid bits even for those more advanced in lighting design. The section on specifications is very helpful, and very complete, and the section on filling a space with light is an inteligent and thoughtful approach to lighting. Personally I would enjoy a section which covers a few areas that I felt got overlooked; Lighting controls, Green considerations, and the foot candle method, but overall it's good book to have in a person's library and might have answers to the questions you are looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know.......2006-03-02

If you're an interior designer and want to expand your lighting horizons - this is the book to buy. It's very accessible for those who might think lighting is all about wiring. This book gives great instruction on lighting design and well as product. A must have in any designer's library.

1 out of 5 stars horrid.......2005-04-03

I had to purchase this book for my Lighting Design Course as a part of my M. Arch program, and this book has done more to confuse me than to help me. The editing is excruciatingly bad, all of the chapters ramble on and repeat themselves constantly, and it is missing at least one crucial element--an explanation of how to diagram lighting layouts and control systems. Do yourself a favor, and find a different book.

5 out of 5 stars The best explanation of the lighting design process in print.......2001-09-04

This is an excellent book. The reasons are these: the process of lighting design is explained with a thoroughness and clarity unseen in other books; the most important points are always accompanied by examples taken from real projects-the author's own or others; the voice of the author is immediate, conversational, and easy to learn from; and, the balance between technical detail and the practical business of getting the (lighting) job done is admirably struck.

Steffy explains the lighting design process in its proper order and with the proper emphasis. He begins by defining the lighting design problem as one grounded in vision-explaining just enough of that fabulously complex process to make the designer aware of the mechanisms by which we visually apprehend the world. How that world is to be seen is defined by the programming phase of a project. In this long section, Steffy shows how psychology, architecture, the requirements of visual work, and many other factors are brought together to define the goals of the lighting project. Each of these aspects is discussed from the designer's perspective and accompanied by unambiguous examples. This first third of the book is probably its strongest section-by the author's design evidently, since it is far more common to plunge into "picking equipment," rather than pause and ruminate about the purposes and goals of lighting for a project.

But the very beginning of the book does not provide much technical underpinning; and so perhaps its only weakness is that the fundamentals are treated at the start with a brevity that may not sufficiently develop a readers' understanding. On the other hand, we are spared the usual inane drawings of candles and spheres, and the often-erroneous analogies trotted out to "explain" things.

The middle third of the book deals with the more technical issues of lighting design: schematic design, daylighting, lamps, luminaires, controls, and design tools. Steffy has chosen members of the architecture and design community for his audience. As such, mathematics has a useful but circumscribed role in the process, and detailed issues managed by electrical engineers are left to those registered professionals. Given that, the coverage is thorough and sufficiently detailed for the reader to leave the text with useful information. The long chapter on lamps is up to date and more than just a recitation of data and characteristics-rather, there is always advice given and experience shared about how different lamps can or should be used. The same can be said of the section devoted to luminaires.

The rest of the book is devoted to the process of getting the lighting design specified, purchased, on the job, and installed. This includes an elaborate explanation of equipment pricing, contract documents, and the practical matters of getting the right equipment to the project. There is no more extensive or thorough an explanation of these important aspects of lighting design in print.

One of the books strongest points is the abundance of examples; there is at least one used to clarify each important point. Absent are the usual hedges and unhelpful generalities about "design;" rather, one finds a bracing, thought-provoking specificity: "do this, not this;" and, marvelous to read, there is nothing imperious about this, for reasons are always given. The examples are particularly important and helpful in the long sections that explain programming and construction documents. In each of these two cases, Steffy offers specific and detailed examples from his own projects. The annotation is extensive and adds the detail that often brings home the point.

Steffy writes in a direct, conversational style that draws the reader into the topic. (The first word in his preface is "Yikes!") The effect is that of being in the presence of someone willing to help, willing to explain things, and who knows what they're doing. This is very important point, since it is a good bet that the book will be used most often for self-study. The modernity of the process by which we learn is acknowledged in the book: there is a continuous sprinkling of Internet addresses where one can find more information. The style, detailed examples, and mechanical layout of the material promote direct understanding. There are none of the usual unsupported recipes and vague injunctions. The directness of Steffy's conversation with the reader helps convey what he knows and how he has applied it to lighting design. And Steffy knows a great deal-he is an internationally recognized lighting designer.

Steffy's book can be recommended without reservation to those who are serious about learning the technology, craft, and process of lighting design-reading it is a close approximation to an extended conversation with a successful and seasoned expert who is willing and capable of sharing what he knows.

This book consists of silhouettes and photos of various pottery forms. Very interesting design resource.

However, a better buy would be Neal French's "The Potter's Encyclopedia of Color, Form and Decoration: The Comprehensive References for Today's Ceramicist". It includes the exact contents of this book, along with Constant & Ogden's "Potter's Palette", along with some pages of additional decoration photos. (For that reason I'm giving this one only two stars).

4 out of 5 stars Good guide for those looking for inspiring ideas..........2000-07-08

....but I was a tad disappointed with the slight bias towards forms with lids and handles. Despite this, the book is a great guide for beginner and intermediate level pottery enthusiasts (using either hand throwing and coiling methods)as it contains a lot of ideas to make your next project! A good book to have if you are just starting out and want to break away from the traditional shapes of bowls and pots.

5 out of 5 stars fun and useful resource..........2000-01-02

... well illustrated with photos of every type of shape and form... a picture book for potters! A fun reminder of forms often forgotten when busy producing a "type" of piece. Broken down into seven sections; including holloware, flatware and decorative, and further sub-sectioned by pages specifically for lids, handles and feet... each page has a color-coded technique key, as well as a photo example and drawn example of each shape or form. This well layed out and easy to follow book is a definite asset to any potter's library. Also includes term glossary.

5 out of 5 stars A definate read!.......2007-05-29

This is an autobiography of a very strong young woman learning the lessons of life and love. Cindy goes through many trials and tribulations in her life. The loss of her mother makes her family drift apart but it is Cindy and John who ultimately bring them back together. She finally finds her true love only to have been seperated by the war. When Jimmy comes home things are just not the same and both eventually move on in their lives. Cindy marries the man she does not really love and has a baby boy. The marriage is always on the rocks and ends in divorce. Cindy has loved and lost and has found many friends along the way in her life. This autobiography is very well written the author pours her heart and soul into her story. You feel as though you are living life along with her. I laughed as well as cried along with Cindy in this story, it truly is heart felt and is a must read for anyone feeling lonely in thier life.

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical autobiography.......2007-04-30

Rear View Mirror is an autobiography by Cindy Callinsky and is a moving and great inspirational account of her life. The story is told in the first person and the author has a way of drawing you into the accounts of her life. The story tells one of love lost, the loss of her mother, and of heartbreak. You will travel cross country and abroad with Cindy. She describes the story contained within the pages as her perception and her reality. In the very beginning she states the following: "This is based on a true story; however, "my" perception is "my" reality. How I have portrayed my story is how I perceived it after having absorbed things with my senses and then processed them through my way of thinking. Other parties involved may have perceived things differently due to a different thought process".

I will have to commend and applaud Cindy on not only her ability to tell her story but in being able to share her life experiences and emotional roller coaster type life. Of course we all experience a roller coaster type life full of ups and downs, loss of love, loss of family and friends, but Cindy has chose to share hers with us. I found myself teary eyed in one moment and smiling the next. Thank you Cindy for sharing your story with me it was a pleasure to read and provide a review.

The book contains some off colored language that may not be suitable for all readers.

5 out of 5 stars It will draw you in.......2007-04-22

I was a skeptic when I started reading this book written by Cindy Callinsky, a Tacoma native, in her first novel,an autobiography of her entrance into young adulthood.
Cindy is someone with whom you can instantly relate. You are happy and hopeful when she finds her true love. Your heart sinks when things don't pan out the way it should. You travel across the country and abroad as she follows her military husband and the new friends she meets.
Many references to the Northwest Rock and Roll music, and the area club scene. Many characters who will find a place in your heart.
This is definitely a great summer beach read. I would recommend that you buy and read this book and tell your friends about it too!

5 out of 5 stars Rear View Mirror - Love lost at such a cost........2007-04-05

Rear View Mirror is a true vision of lives left behind, a true love lost and of haunting memories. It reads like you are the one telling the story. You become the story teller and become the emotions that are so honestly laid before us. Cindy Callinsky does not hide behind veils or regrets and she lets her true soul shine throughout the book. Do not make the mistake of thinking that Rear View Mirror is "chick lit". Every page shows honesty and emotions that any soul can understand and appreciate.

2 out of 5 stars Bland.......2006-12-07

All of the "glowing" reviews I have read for this book have been written either here or on other web pages by folks directly involved with the book or are close friends of the author. I've read enough of it on the author's MySpace page for the book to know that it is bland and rather uninspired. I'm no connoisseur of "chick lit" books, but I am an avid reader and raconteur, and this is nothing exceptional. Don't waste your money.

    The elegant view from behind!

The young Californian photographer Steven Vaschon has fallen prey to the masculine backside. With his particularly aesthetic eye he shows us the most beautiful behinds found on the American West Coast. The elegant duotone images in this collection show a unique collection of classic rear views - men like antique sculptures, but always full of life.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Le Grande Derrière .......2005-09-30

With all of the flack about male frontal nudity that pipes through the media (is the new ROME series on HBO pornographic?, how many major male stars have full nudity shots and what does that mean?, why does art not treat female nudity the same censorious way male nudity is treated?, etc), it is most refreshing to leaf through Steve Vaschon's fine collection REAR VIEW. No problem with the derrière here: it is the star!

Vaschon juxtaposes his subjects with architecture, landscape, forms, light and shadow, all of which generally add to the postulate that 'bums' are simply worth including in photographs. But actually by keeping such a low profile in the manner in which he photographs his models (each of whom has an exceptional specimen of derrière!), he allows the muscle mass and flesh that compose this structure to be appreciated both as anatomy and like fine sculpture. This is a well-produced book that might just be that perfect gift for friends who pose as liberated beings. Nicely done. Grady Harp, September 05

    5 out of 5 stars A Buttman's Dream.......2005-08-05

If you are an aficionado of the male posterior, then this book is for you. Butts are like candy to some viewers, and if you have a very sweet tooth, this book will help to quell your appetite. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent 1st effort by Steven Vaschon.......2004-10-02

I work in a book store in San Francisco which has sold this book quite well. When Mr. Vaschon came into our store for a book signing I took an interest and learned a few very cool things about this book, it's artist and why it sold in our store so well.

First of all, we put up a poster identical to the book cover in our window and from that image alone, our foot traffic into the store was greatly increased with many folks wanting to take a look at the book. We sold out of our initial copies in one week (as did 10% Productions.com, TLA Video.com, Books Inc. and many other websites and retailers.) As we reordered the book, we continually sold out and to this day, (a year later, it still sells well).

I think that the guy from NYC is being way to harsh about this book. The photographer is attempting to make an "artistic" statement instead of a "pornographic" statement, so I don't know how "engaging" artistic photos are supposed to be. (Maybe you should stick to porn for more engaging material, or take an art class.)

This book has also been a #1 Bestseller here on Amazon.com for months at a time so I'm quite certain that few people share your opinion that this book is "bland". Give the guy a break. As per his credits on the last page, he's only been doing photography for a couple years and I think he did an excellent job!

I like the book and it's images and I would recommend it or buy it for many close friends, as well as people I don't know well.

1 out of 5 stars Bland Back Side Book.......2004-08-09

Five minutes after getting Rear View, I tossed it in my "Gifts For Folks You're Not Close To" drawer. It's not that the photos are bad; they're just not any good. Dull, without context or drama -- I've seen more engaging shots in medical school anatomy books. Butt, I mean, But -- you be the judge, and then rewrap it for a friend.

    5 out of 5 stars Vaschon's Artful Eye.......2003-11-09

There's something about the photographic work of Steve Vaschon that inspires near-poetic description. Though his recent release "Rear View", focuses--literally--on the male hindquarters, the resulting images hardly reflect the more "utilitarian" nature of one of the human body's most intriguing features. Terms such as "ass", "butt" or--God forbid, "bum" hardly seem appropriate when describing such magnificent photogenic posteriors. Even a term as delicious as "cakes" seems so inadequate and pedestrian, one is almost moved to Gallicize it to the much more appropriate "gateaux".

Juxtaposed with such elements as funiture, vehicles and architecture, Vaschon's nudes are both compelling and elegant, completely at home in the context of fine art photography.

With uncanny insight and deadpan humor, the twelve stories in Pete Duval's debut collection feature night shift workers, lapsed Catholics, bullies, and smalltime thieves struggling with their jobs, their religion, and their families. Duval records in a fresh, off-kilter voice the desperate measures, heated confrontations, and moments of grace that occur in working-class communities. Throughout the collection, Duval explores his characters with compassion and candor and an eye for the surprising moment.

5 out of 5 stars Wise, Funny, Humane.......2006-02-27

Pete Duval's Rear View is a collection of twelve stories that are astonishing and wonderful in their wit, brilliance, and toughness. Wise and leavened by humor, these stories show us how darkly impossible everyday life can be-and how we manage to live it anyway in the company of all our flaws and limitations.

What touched me most deeply was Duval's treatment of his male characters, who are burdened by society's expectations on behalf of us all. These characters expect themselves live up to ideals of manliness and responsibility as they try to deal with bullies ("Bakery," "Scissors"), bear with sick parents ("Midnight Mass," "Wheatback"), protest injustice ("Cellular"), absorb marriage and aging ("Impala," "Rear View"), speak rationality to madness ("Spectator Sport"), conserve their integrity ("Something Like Shame"), midwife one another into a violent world ("Fun with Mammals"), or simply survive ("Welcome Wagon"). Reality is always an ambush in the dark, though. In Duval's masterful hands, these characters win our respect, our understanding, and finally our empathy for not being perfect. They are like us. They are doing their best. The ultimate struggle is to forgive oneself ("Pious Object").

None of us sign up as children for these life ordeals, but we meet them anyway. In my favorite story, "Bakery," the decent main character Gus meets his nemesis in the bully Red, who wears Gus down to a nub of physical outrage. Afterwards, Gus discovers his own childhood school desk in the dark attic:

With his good hand, he pulled the desk into the center of the floor
and turned it to face north, the darkest part of the sky. The lights of New
Bedford glimmered across the river. He wedged himself into the chair.
Creaking with his weight, it felt small and wobbly underneath him. (84)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Decription + Peculiar Plots = Excellent Stories.......2006-02-09

Pete Duval's writing and descriptive style remind me of Raymond Carver, but Duval's sense of humor, (in Fun With Mammals - a tribe of guys are transporting a stolen narwhal in the back of a flatbed, and the narwhal gives birth to...you have to read the story, but it's thoroughly bizarre and excellent)compassion, and generousity put him on a plane of his own. Each story holds a spotlight up to the daily revelations and disappointments that both keep us going and drive us down. Duval's characters are ordinary people in the grip of universal emotion. As you watch them moved by forces beyond their control, and sometimes accepting the inexplicable (Cellular has a talking whippet named Tex, who speaks regularly to the narrator) you end up pretty damn moved yourself. And pained. Spectator Sport - a story about a college kid volunteering at a mental hospital, and getting involved in competition with the patients, ("I volunteered to visit insane people at a mental hospital. I was in college. I thought it might be fun." is a perfect example. Read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Flash Fiction at it's Finest.......2005-01-14

Pete Duval has fine-tuned each story in Rear View to reveal the gristly, meaty bits of life. His stories are refreshingly concise and concentrated. Duval does not waste words, and that is an admirable trait in contemporary fiction. His paradoxial themes on religion and the working class make for orignal, highly intriguing stories.

    I highly recommend this collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Duval's masterful text.......2004-09-22

I just finished Peter Duval's Rear View; it was one of the most remarkable books I've had the pleasure to hold in my hands. Growing as part of the bustle of blue collar New England, I felt an incredible emotional connection to the characters in Duval's stories. Everyone who grows up in a neighborhood like mine knows a dozen characters like the major players in the text. Duval is part of a new generation of blue-collar New England writers who convey the stories of arguably the most often overlooked social group in "Yankee" literature. Duval's New Bedford, MA is my North End of Burlington, VT, could be another writer's Bath, Maine or another writer's Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Duval's writing is iconoclastic; it gives agency to a mass of people the literary world would rather forget.

5 out of 5 stars Hard, gritty, real.......2004-09-01

Duval, misplaced Southerner I believe him to be (what with his conflicted view of religion and preoccupation with blue-collar grit), has written as fine a debut collection as I've read in many years. Reminiscent of Thom Jones, Denis Johnson and Larry Brown's FACING THE MUSIC.

Californian Steven Vaschon's distinct, conceptive nude photography devotes itself to celebrating the male posterior, full of respect and powerful enthusiasm. Sidestepping the purely sexual approach to photography, he explores the delicate fusion of artistry and sensuality with every image. This 96-page book is a must for admirers of the male backside and fine photography. An impressive follow-up to the success of Vaschon's first volume.

Shortly after the book arrived I threw it out. For some people it might be just the thing, but it really is pretty sterile, and surprisingly non-erotic.

5 out of 5 stars dale earnhardt- rear view mirror.......2001-04-27

This was without a doubt the most thorough and comprehensive one volume work I have seen on Dale. I followed Dale for over 15 years and when he died a void was left that this book was able to fill. For anyone who is a fan of racing this tome shows what a great family man Dale was. From a novice to an old pro one can not help but get chills and thrills from recalling all the events in Dales life. If you can only buy one Dale book this is it. 5 stars for the book and raves for putting Dale in leather for the book like Dale should be long lasting.

This is a must for any Earnhardt fan. I enjoyed reading the stories about Dale's races and the pictures are great. The Charlotte Observer did a good job putting together their articles and pictures for a book on Dale's racing career.

          Book Description

You live for Monday mornings. You go to the health club to get a stock tip on the Stairmaster. You dread the day in spring when clocks are set forward, robbing you of an hour. You think an ulcer is a badge of courage. You know who you are. You can't help yourself. You're a workaholic, and proud of it. Expanding on the kindly, humorous, self-effacing tone of their first collaboration, You Know You're a Grown Up When. . . . Jeanne Hanson and New Yorker cartoonist Lee Lorenz now focus on that particular personality disorder familiar to nearly all of us.

This book is a tribute to those beleaguered people whose stomachs cramp up at the idea of a 40-hour workweek, who have never done a jigsaw puzzle, and who refer to a noon love tryst as a meeting. 63,000 copies in print
