I like going out to the ballpark and looking at the ballpark itself. I like finding the stats about it. What things there are to do. And how it was designed. This book gave me wonderful ideas on how to design my own stadium. I recomend this book to anyone.

Definitely one of my favorite books on the shelf. STADIA provides a unique, not seen before look at the architectural structures of todays sports stadiums. Fun to read over and back and around again. Gives ideas that provide a basis for drawings and blueprints.

Excellent Source for Stadia Builders/Designers.......2007-06-01
I was amazed by the information overflow and detailed accuracy in this work. You may think there's a lot of extra info and not enough pictures/diagrams, but believe me there's plenty of images that helps reader's comprehension levels. I think it is a very good source for anybody, who needs to get inspired and to design new stadia. It helps you from ground up. As for the price, it is well worth to spend on this book rather than try to compile bunch of other cheap ones. This book gives back much more value than it takes out from your pocket. Finally, it is a very successful work and keeps replenishing with newest inventions in stadia technology. That is why this is the 4th edition.

Appleton's book is an altogether excellent "graphic standard" for the design of all aspects of a building devoted to the performing arts -- from auditoriums to lobbies and beyond. As an architectural thesis student designing a theater, the book became an invaluable resource to me.

Good presentation of other artists' work only.......2007-04-29
I was looking for a book that would show other artists' work AND also give me some insight into how they chose the colors they did and a little about how they composed the piece, at least if I want the book to keep in my own library. This is a beautiful book, but doesn't teach me anything about working with pastel colors or about composition. For that, look at "All About Pastels" and for hands-on practice, I loved the book "Pastel Workbook," which is coming out in paperback soon. I did enjoy looking at this book from the library, but don't see a need to own it.

This one is the most comprehensive book on pastel art I've seen. Beautifully presented, it's the ideal companion to my other art books. Carefully chosen artists show their work and describe the process involved in creating each masterpiece.
Best of the "Best" so far.......2006-03-19
This edition of Pastel Paintings is outstanding for the quality of the artwork. It goes beyond the usual predictable landscapes and still lifes. There is a variety of painting styles, many loose and free. The inclusion of a beautiful figure drawing among several portrait and figure paintings is refreshing. This is a wonderful book to add to your collection of pastel art. The color and style of these works are supremely exciting.

I was challenged to buy book based on the cover review. Upon receiving the book, I was somewhat disapointed in the content within. I expected a higher caliber of colorists than illustrated.

I began collecting books this past year on successful pastel paintings. This particular collection is my latest and as someone who's always loved the medium of pastels, I think Pure Color is truly the finest and most inspirational book of its kind...makes me feel like happier than a kid in a candy shop! I also appreciate begin able to have access to the artists' contact information located at the end of the book; going to their web sites is like having an extension of the hardcover version of the book and makes the experience of reading the book exponentially better.

This is an incredibly beautiful book, with improvements over the first Best of Pastel: one large picture per page, and two captions for each--an artist's statement about the painting, and a few words about technique and style. The works chosen for the book are diverse, and show the artists' range and considerable skill. The only downer, in my view, is the "Critiquing Your Own Work" section at the end. Though it contains valuable information for beginning and perhaps advanced pastellists, it is written in such a snobby and condescending manner it puts a sour ending to an otherwise very sweet book.

This volume has a good range of works, including figures (which the first volume did not), and includes explanations and background on the works. Good for ideas, techniques, and just appreciating "painting without a brush".

Wow! What an inspiring book for pastel and all art lovers. Makes you realize the amazing amount of talent in this country with our artists. This book really gets you excited about working in pastels. You will be running to your drawing tables, with book in hand. The reproductions are beautiful full page color drawings representing countless styles all beautifully executed. When I am at a lost to what to do next I get this book out and just read and look at the varity and skills it takes to accomplish them. After looking at this book I go straight to my easel and just put the pastel in hand and go for it. I absolutly love this book and would not go without it in my libary of books!I hope to see another one soon!

Sorry to disagree but this volume has almost no figure works and has little if any explanation of the paintings and drawings. The next volume has figures and helpful explanations and background.

This is a nice small book: however, if readers have Best of Pastels and Pastels 2, it the same examples of pastels from these two books.
A wonderful grouping of contemporary pastelists.......1999-01-08
This is a richly illustrated book of some of the best contemporary pastelists working today. The introduction by Flora Giffuni (founder of the Pastel Society of America) re-affirms for the reader that pastel is, indeed, a glorious medium, as do the many fine examples illustrated throughout the book. The full color reproductions are of very good quality, nicely demonstrating the vivacious qualities of this fabulous yet often misunderstood medium. Each reproduction is accompanied by the title and dimensions of the work, the artist's name, and the support used. Future editions would benefit from artists' statements (as is the case in "The best of Pastel 2"), as well as the types of pastels used by each individual artist. One minor criticism is that there are often four reproductions to a spread, which of course can distract from each individual piece (the 2nd edition eliminates that problem by placing one image to a page). The directory of artists in the back of the book is also a nice addition. This book is highly recommended to both the devout pastelist and those who are unfamiliar with the medium.
