South Beach Deco: Step By Step.......2005-07-10
A most fabulous and descriptive book about South Beach Art Deco. The photography is beautiful and each page is a treasure and a pleasure to enjoy!
A Must-Buy for Anyone Into South Beach Deco.......2005-04-30
I am a world-wide traveler and have a large collection of guidebooks that I usually purchase prior to taking trips. I purchased 'South Beach Deco,Step By Step' after I visited Miami Beach because it made me feel good about the times I had there and supplied information that I will use on future trips to South Beach. Ordinarily I skim a book until I find a particular area of interest, but I found myself reading this book straight through. It is fun to read and so informative at the same time. I loved the explanations of what tropical deco is, and I enjoyed gazing at the photos that are quite plentiful and vibrant. There is nothing boring about this book and it just makes me want to return to that part of the world as soon as possible. 'South Beach Deco, Step By Step' leaves the other books I have read on this area in the dust (or perhaps I should say sand). The reason being is that it has an excellent balance of information-- just enough history so that it never becomes boring, a sufficient but not overwhelming amount of recommendations so that it is not confusing, easy to understand definitions, and a smattering of humor which makes one smile. I will take it with me on my next visit.
Seeing the Real South Beach.......2005-04-29
I visited South Beach recently and was at a loss of what to bring back as gifts for special friends. "South Beach Deco, Step by Step" was perfect. I got one for myself so I didn't have to take a lot of photos because this book has a great variety of pictures, many of the Art Deco Hotels which were a highlight of my trip. Aside from the great visuals, the text gave me all I needed to know to have a great time; it was like a companion who filled me in on everything - - the best things to see, the coolest places to eat and where to just relax and enjoy the scene. The book made me comfortable that I wasn't missing out on something ("what you didn't see..."). There are also some fun maps that are easy to read. All in all, an A+ and something I pick up and look at because its interesting and beautiful, and reminds me I want to go back to South
Beach.
A good picture book..........2005-03-31
If you really want a book of color photos, get Iris Chase's new book South Beach Deco: Step By Step. Susan Russell took an amazing amount of great photos of South Beach.
Iris is the resident artist at the Art Deco Welcome Center smack in the middle of Ocean Drive and as she says it is "Miami Beach Art Deco 101."
She's written an easy-to-read good introductory text that lays out all of the areas, describes the fun aspects of hangin' out at The Beach, and has a modest bit of history. It's large size 8 1/2" x 11" makes it a big large to carry around but having it before hand will make it easier to find a hotel and figure out the sights and things you might want to do while there. And after you come home it will have all of the wonderful photos to help jog your memory.
South Beach Deco: Step By Step is for anyone who wants to remember SoBe as it is today (2005).
Don't go to South Beach without this in your suitcase!.......2005-03-30
I regularly vacation in Miami Beach and LOVE visiting South Beach with its pastel deco buildings, pristine beaches, beautiful people, trendy restaurants and open-till-dawn night clubs. I just finished reading South Beach Deco: Step by Step, and I have a new appreciation for my favorite vacation spot! The author, Iris Chase, really knows her town from the inside out. And the photos are absolutely beautiful! The next time I travel south, I will definitely have this book in my suitcase! This terrific book is a must! Have fun travelers!
Book Description
An indispensable tool for authenticating pieces and weeding out forgeries, this book is destined to become a standard reference for doll collectors and dealers. It provides a description of each manufacturer's production history, doll mold characteristics, and illustrated examples of each maker's mark.

Antique Trader's Doll Makers and Marks: A guide to Identification.......2007-01-15
I use this book most often. It is a comprehensive book on doll manufactures with lists of doll name, mold numbers and sizes. It has pictures of most of doll mold numbers. It is a handy book to have around when you are an antique doll collector. For harder to identify mold numbers some smaller books, like Main Street Dictionary of Doll Marks is best. All in all this is one of my most used books and I do recommend it.
A must have !.......2002-05-26
A must have..buy dolls or has a collection and needs to find marks, #s, makers, and not just for bisque, but compo and other materials, old dolls to more resent dolls. So full of information
those marks that you thought you'd never find you just might here. You won't go wrong.. and what a price.. Couldn't live without it. Wonderful book.
Helpful, but not complete.......2001-10-18
This was the doll book I bought when I accidently ended up with two antique dolls. Although there is a wealth of information in this book, my two weren't identified. I now own four antique dolls from England, Belgium, and Germany, and the only one identified in this book is the Armand Marseilles. I'm still looking for a way to identify my other three.
Exciting addition to any reference library........1999-07-31
This book has hundreds of doll marks and identifications. It has been a superb help in identifying dolls of all kinds. If you buy this one you will use it often.
Best all-round indentification guide to dolls.......1999-06-29
This book has more information in one volume than any other doll ID guide that I've seen. I especially appreciate the doll size charts--helps to determine what size head goes on which body for many makes of antique dolls. Newer dolls are covered, too. It's my most-used book!

The Black Dog Tavern on Martha's Vineyard is a cult classic--and anyone who's eaten there will recognize the distinctive black-lab T-shirt that fans of the restaurant all over the world wear. Now, with The Black Dog Summer on the Vineyard Cookbook, by Elaine Sullivan, those same diners can bring the Dog's savory new New England fare back home as well. The best of these 100-some recipes center around the Black Dog's specialty: breakfast. Aficionados will find such familiar favorites as Eggs in the Grass (poached eggs over asparagus with hollandaise sauce), "M" Go Blue (banana and blueberry pancakes; the name recalls a University of Michigan cheer), and Huey, Louie, Andouille (a pepper, onion, and andouille sausage omelet). The book's step-by-step depiction of omelet preparation is particularly useful, even for veterans; the illustrations for this and other cooking technicalities, like clam opening, are precise and educational. Other standout recipes include Quahog Chowder, Crunchy Pecan Chicken with Lemon Sauce, Caramelized Scallops with Smoked Chili Cream, and Seared Tuna on Watercress Salad. Desserts such as Fudge Bottom Pie, Blueberry Pudding with Lemon Sauce, and Black Dog Ginger Cookies evoke the Black Dog's comfy-cosmo flavor, while scattered pictures and vignettes evoke the restaurant's casual vibe. With a pantry listing and useful cooking tips, this exuberantly designed book is a happy, well-produced effort.

One of the best cookbooks ever.......2007-04-29
As a regular buyer and user of cookbooks, this cookbook is one of the easiest to use and has loads of good recepies. Several of the recipes are now part of my daily menu plans. My family especially likes the Pork Cutlets with Madiera Sauce. Plus, finding a Stuffed Quahogs receipe that is so much like my grandmother-in-law's famous Quahogs is a rare find!
I admit it, I'm a cookbook junkie.......2007-02-17
I like cookbooks with lots of beautiful pictures and this one rates five stars for its pictures and interesting stories. I like recipes that use ingredients most of us have in our kitchens although recipes with the more exotic ingredients are welcome, too. Recipes have to be easy to prepare and not too time-consuming. Black Dog scores points here, also. But, the bottom line is, are you happy with the end result of all your labors and would you make the recipe again. So far, Black Dog fulfills this requirement with the recipes I have tried. For instance, the clam chowder recipe is excellent. I highly recommend this cookbook. I think it would make a great gift for the novice as well as "seasoned" cook.
Authentic flavor from the Vineyard.......2006-11-12
This is one of my favorite cookbooks, both to cook from and to simply read and look at. The recipes are easily presented and simple to follow. That comes in handy, since its versatility covers breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts while combining a true sense of the summer lifestyle on Martha's Vineyard. It's a funny cookbook, beautifully photographed and -- no other word fits -- lovingly presented.
Among my favorite recipes: The simple pasta putanesca and the fish chowder are ones you'll rely upon time and again. The recipes are true restaurant combinations, meaning they're a little more forgiving than recipes developed mostly out of test kitchens or home economics departments. Flavors adapt easily to home cooks' preferences for more or less spice, more or less fuss.
A good thing about this book is that the dishes coordinate well with each other. It's easy to come up with a full dinner menu out of this book. A brunch could easily be built around the breakfast-lunch chapters and impress the most discriminating palates. Same with dinner; present what you see, and you'll wow your family, your guests or simply give yourself a treat.
Really, really good for a 'destination restaurant.'.......2006-01-31
As a self-professed foodie, I am opposed to destination restaurants at any level. However, I happened to glance at this cookbook (mostly to reaffirm my beliefs) and was so surprised I bought it. I have to say, everything I've tried has been a 'do-over' at my house (which is high praise coming from my now spoiled family!) Easy, yet very tasty, makes me (almost) want to stand in line for an hour for breakfast this summer!
Good as being on the island.......2005-09-27
I love this book. It is a perfect gift for anyone that has been to MV or anyone that cooks. The recipies are wonderful and hearty- the photos bring back great memories. A must have for any occasion. Try the Easy Grill Maranade and you will be hooked.

Judy Blume first won legions of fans with such young adult classics as Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Forever, in which she tackles the cultural hot button of teenage sexuality. In Summer Sisters, her third novel for adults, the author again explores the ramifications of love--and lust--on two friends. Initially, the differences between Caitlin Somers and Victoria Leonard (or "Vix," as Caitlin christens her) draw them together: privileged Caitlin is wild and outspoken, beautiful but emotionally fragile, while working-class Vix is shy, reserved, and plain in comparison. After Caitlin selects Vix to accompany her to her father's home in Martha's Vineyard for the summer, the two become inextricably connected as "summer sisters."
On the Vineyard, Vix and Caitlin first find love, then sex--and lots of it. Yet Blume soon moves beyond hot fun in the summer sun, tracing the romantic and familial travails of the two from pre-adolescence to adulthood. Solid Vix evolves into Victoria, an equally solid, Harvard-educated, Manhattan public-relations exec. Unpredictable Caitlin opts out of college and travels to Europe, where she has a string of short-lived affairs with a series of intriguing (in every sense of the word) foreigners. It is only after she returns to the Vineyard that Caitlin does the unthinkable, forever changing both her friendship with Vix and their lives. Blume once again proves herself a master of the female psyche, and Summer Sisters is likely to entertain both her postadolescent and more mature readers.
Book Description
No writer captures the seasons of our lives better than Judy Blume. Now, from the New York Times bestselling author of Wifey and Smart Women, comes an extraordinary novel of reminiscence and awakening--an unforgettable story of two women, two families, and the friendships that shape a lifetime.
When Victoria Leonard answers the phone in her Manhattan office, Caitlin's voice catches her by surprise. Vix hasn't talked to her oldest friend in months. Caitlin's news takes her breath away--and Vix is transported back in time, back to the moment she and Caitlin Somers first met, back to the casual betrayals and whispered confessions of their long, complicated friendship, back to the magical island where two friends became summer sisters.
Caitlin dazzled Vix from the start, sweeping her into the heart of the unruly Somers family, into a world of privilege, adventure, and sexual daring. Vix's bond with her summer family forever reshapes her ties to her own, opening doors to opportunities she had never imagined--until the summer she falls passionately in love. Then, in one shattering moment on a moonswept Vineyard beach, everything changes, exposing a dark undercurrent in her extraordinary friendship with Caitlin that will haunt them through the years.
As their story carries us from Santa Fe to Martha's Vineyard, from New York to Venice, we come to know the men and women who shape their lives. And as we follow the two women on the paths they each choose, we wait for the inevitable reckoning to be made in the fine spaces between friendship and betrayal, between love and freedom.
Summer Sisters is a riveting exploration of the choices that define our lives, of friendship and love, of the families we are born into and those we struggle to create. For every woman who has ever had a friend too dangerous to forgive and too essential to forget, Summer Sisters will glue you to every page, reading and remembering.
Judy Blume's twenty-one books have sold over sixty-five million copies worldwide and have been translated into twenty languages. She spends summers on Martha's Vineyard with her family.

A page turner.......2007-09-04
I can't begin to describe how this book touched me. There are some parts of this book that touched me so all I felt was nostalgia and like I was looking back at a part of my life I could do over and there were parts that I felt so anxious to experience. For any twenty-something, this is the Judy Blume book you need to read. It's the third adult novel of Judy's on this list (23-25 here are the ones) and it's so fantastic. I'm glad I read Smart Women first because it helped me adjust to the transitioning narrators of this book. There are male and female narrators and I think the biggest key is to notice which narrators are absent. This is a book not for those who consider themselves "grown ups" but probably those who are adults but are still kids at heart. I wanted to cry at this book, to sob from the unfairness of life but it was so moving that I was too happy with it. This book is a celebration of youthly joys and after reading it you'll understand why.
A+++++++!!!!!!!.......2007-08-22
I loved this book! I think it's by far one of my favorites. It has a wonderful way of making you reminisce on your own life, your own friends. J.B. did a superb job! There were parts where I thought "been there! know that feeling!" I enjoyed the point of view that the book was told in, but what I enjoyed most was how you also got the point of view of all characters - how it'd let you know just what they were thinking & how they viewed the situation. GREAT, GREAT, GREAT BOOK!!!! Can't wait for more adult novels by J.B. FANTASTIC!!!!!
Couldn't stop thinking about this book.......2007-07-22
This book was a real page turner. A simple and entertaining read. I only have time to read during my lunch hour and I could not stop thinking about the storylines and characters when I would return to work.
I grew up reading Judy Blume books and have never read anything I didn't like. I hope she writes more novels soon.
Givers and takers.......2007-07-01
I really didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book. When reading a book by an author with works as diverse as "Then Again, Maybe I Won't" and "Wifey," well, I really didn't know how to calibrate my expectations.
But the book was great on its own terms. There's an endearing quality to the protagonist Victoria "Vix" Leonard that can only be achieved by a good author (although Caitlin Somers never achieved the full three dimensions for me, but perhaps that's because her character is secondary). The story is good and moves right along. But what I like most about the book is its theme of vindication: the good and the just are rewarded for their deeds and the unjust are, in one form or another, punished, usually as a result of their own poor choices. I'm not talking about a morality tale per se, but rather confirmation that in life, people who do the right thing generally succeed, and those who do not, do not.
Amazing book.......2007-06-27
I just finished reading this book again for (at least) the sixth time because I read it every summer. I tell every one of my girl friends that she HAS to read this book. Summer Sisters follows the friendship of two very different girls, Vix and Caitlin, from their first summer together at the Vineyard at age 12 to adulthood. Everything that happens between makes the book so readable. There's laughter, tears, passion, new loves, lost loves, heartbreak, opportunities, family, everything! The variety of characters makes the book very colorful, and the way Blume allows readers to glance into their heads is genius. I am a 21 year-old girl and this book makes me wish I were 12, spending a summer in the Vineyard with my best friend. If you are a young woman and remember what it's like to spend summers away from home, perhaps near water, or with a best friend, or perhaps you know what it's like to admire those cute older local boys by the cottage (I definitely do), then you will relish every second of this book. I think everyone over the age of 15 should read this book this summer (and every summer that follows). Read it by the pool. Read it on the beach. Read it in your room. Whatever you do, just read it and NBO:-)

The affection photographer and Martha's Vineyard resident Alison Shaw feels for her immediate surroundings is clearly expressed in each of her photos of the island. Shaw turns her lens on everything from the architectural details of island houses to fresh blueberries in their crates at the farmer's market and early-morning fisherman at Sengekontacket. She is not afraid to experiment with various polarizing and density filters, which give her images a range of dreamy effects--purple fog lifting off a lagoon, a fiery orange sunset at Paul's Point--and supersaturated colors. This is Shaw's second book of photography of the Vineyard. Her images are strong and colorful, though not always inventive. Still, readers who share her passion for the Vineyard should be happy to peruse this book.

Enchanting.......2000-08-02
The title tells it all. This is a fun book to read and it got my wife and me all excited about our trip way before we even packed our bags. All the suggestions were very good.
A superb travel guide.......1998-12-08
This book is what travel guides are supposed to be: informative, interesting, and most of all--fun. Great research and the author's warm writing style make planning a leisurely holiday a pleasant experience. Great suggestions for romantic getaways, but there's plenty here for the whole family, if you really want to bring the kids.
Is it summer yet?........1998-12-08
Living in Chicago, I'm always longing for summer. Now I'm also longing to go to the Cape area. Enchanted Summer paints a great picture of what should be a great summer vacation. The book is well written, well organized and well..enchanting. Can't wait to check out the recommendations.
This book made me ache for another visit to the Vineyard........1998-11-11
The author captures the very essence of the Cape Cod shores and the Vineyard and Nantucket. And the charming illustrations add to the call of life at another pace and that life can truly be enjoyed, one B & B at a time.
