A mixture of black-and-white and color diagrams.......2004-09-09
Saucier + Perotte Architectes, 1995-2002 showcases and illustrates the French Canadian architectural projects of Saucier + Perrotte over a seven year span. A mixture of black-and-white and color diagrams and photographs form the highlight of this journal, which is largely wordless except for a smattering of introductory and commentary essays. Saucier + Perotte Architectes, 1995-2002 prefers to let the bold images and floor plans speak for themselves, and is an inspirational tour of this remarkable team's style, especially distinguished by its prevalence of sharp edges, box shapes, and corners.

Great for Beginners like me!.......2006-11-10
This book is a great starting place for beginning manga artists such as myself. It gives real in-depth information and photos to give the artist/reader a good idea of what features should ideally look like. It gives an awesome starting point for poses and features, and even a little background information. There are sections for young, teenage, and adult males AND females, including sections on specific features. I'm thrilled to have made this purchase, and I recommend it! Especially to beginners.
Grandson says yes!.......2006-07-20
I gave this guide to my grandson, age 12, for a summer project. He said to give it 5 stars. He has produced some exceptional pictures. Even took it with him for a one week camping trip. Kudos to John Layman.
Not what I needed.......2006-05-24
This book is okay for beginner, so it was a little to basic for what I was looking for. If you've never been introduced to drawing Manga before, then this book is good for you. It vaguely goes over different nose styles (personally it could've done the same with eyes) and it could have gone over action and poses more, but again, I'd recommend this book for a beginner.
Good if.........2006-03-02
This is a good manga book if you want to be able to make manga comic books, make proportianal bodies and have basic training in making little creatures! It also explains difference between Japanese and American. By the way if your a beginner its fine for you, but if you want to understand well, you might need little experience.

Not much for drawing, but..........2006-08-11
This book is actually quite useful. It gives you some real important tips on copyright and licensing that are INDISPENCEABLE. While it is laking somewhat in terms of how-to-draw, this is still a pretty good book
Only a real idiot would think this guy can do cartoons.......2004-09-23
If your idea of getting ahead in cartooning is being able to draw in the most basic manner, while listening to the authors address you like some high school drop out with ADA, then this book is for you. First of all, this guy is a lousy cartoonist and it's almost exclusively his work that is presented. Secondly, the book goes long on history and short on current stuff. I suppose this is because the early stuff was in the public domain and the cheap-assed publishers were more interested in saving a buck, than doing a real cartoonist book. Do yourself a favor, don't buy this piece of crap.
For the Serious Cartoonist.......2002-08-15
Leave the word "Idiot's" out of the title, and you'll have a clearer idea of what this book is about. Let me make one thing clear... this is NOT a beginner's "how to draw" book. This book assumes that you already know how to draw, and offers you guidelines on how to apply that skill to cartooning. The authors give a much too brief overview of the origins and history of cartooning (with a few minor errors), and discuss the basics of cartoon construction: expression, perspective, composition, and gag writing. They also briefly review the various forms of cartooning, and what special talents and knowledge each one requires: gag panels, comic strips, comic books, editorial cartoons, greeting cards, animation, and computer graphics. There's an entire chapter devoted to manga, the Japanese style of cartooning that's currently popular in the US. Plus, a helpful bibliography, glossary, and lots of tips on how to get your work published.
My one complaint, and it's a minor one, is that I was distracted by the authors' repeated use of the word "media" as a singular noun rather than plural... but that's the proofreader in me.
For an art book, it's surprisingly heavy on text and light on illustrations... but that's not a drawback in this case. This is not a book for beginners, but if you're an aspiring cartoonist in need of direction and encouragement, then I can't think of a better book for you.

Historical perspective on quilting focusing on the collection of H. F. DuPont @ Winterthur.......2007-06-05
My wife is a "quilter". While I was on the East Coast attending a family reunion, one of my cousins, with whom I was staying, asked if I wanted to join her in a tour of Winterthur, close to where she lives. I accepted the invitation and totally enjoyed it especially the quilt collection there. I am not a quilter myself - there are some males interested in and "artists" in this art form, but I have become acquainted with it through my wife's interest in it. When I saw this book, examined it and checked out other's reviews of it, I decided it would make a nice birthday gift for my wife. I liked the fact that it dealt with the history of this art form here in the US, the quilt makers of particular quilts, and the progression of technique in "constructing" them. To me it would appeal to my wife's knowledge of this art form through the collection of the H. F. DuPont family.
A Chance to See Magnificent Quilts from the Winterthur Collection.......2007-03-17
"Quilts from a material world" is a long-awaited opportunity to view some of the finest quilts in Winterthur's collections, but also to have them expertly placed in social, economic, mercantile, and political context by Linda Eaton's well-researched and readable narrative. This book is a must for quilt and fabric historians, American history buffs, and members of the general reading public who are interested in knowing more about American material culture (in both senses of the word "material"). It is an excellent contribution to the study of fabrics and quilts.
beautiful and fascinating.......2007-01-26
i have barely had time to savour this book. there is so much to interest quilters and non-quilters that it is hard to know where to start to review.
the photographs of the quilts are wonderful, with lots of details. the textile history is thorough and accurate, including a fascinating section on the different techniques of putting pattern on cloth. the history of the quilters is, yes, fascinating, including letters written by one quilter to her fiance and later husband in the early part of the 19th century.
anyone interested in early america, early manufacturing, and the lives of our forebears will enjoy this book as much as any quilter.

Excellent Aid for Production of Period Works.......2004-10-27
I was excited from the time I opened the package. The volume has high quality photographs printed on gloss pages. The photographs represent a broad spectrum of works by superior funrniture makers. The comprehensive text explained the obvious and not so obvious distingtions in form, format, style, constrution approach, and a host of like details.
I took the volume with me to Marc Adams School of Woodworking for a Philidephia Lowboy class with Allen Breed. The pictures aided in layout and construction of the item. Class members were impressed with the quality and quanity of the photographs. This book is well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:
DU PONT'S WINTERTHUR.......2006-03-31
Winterthur is THE finest collection of American Federal Furniture in the world, it is simply a singular collection. This book is very well conceived, the text is well researched and the images are crisp. Mr. Dupont was one of the first major collectors of American Furniture of the Federal Period, and he had a great eye for the best pieces. We are so lucky that he kept his beloved collection intact and he was generous enough to create a museum to showcase this spectacular collection and allow the public to appreciate the beauty of this amazing craftsmanship. American Federal Furniture is now some of the most expensive and sought after furnture in the world, but at the time Mr. DuPont began collecting it was not sought after at all, the wealthy wanted French Furniture, this was considered beautiful and American Federal Furniture was considered too understated, Mr. DuPont, because of who he was, really changed peoples mind on this style of furniture and we owe him a debt of gratitude for this. I recommend this book to anyone with a love for beautiful things.
first time used book order.......2004-12-08
My sister in law wanted this book for her Christmas gift. She is an antique appraiser. I was a bit unsure of ordering a used book for a present but when it came I was happily surprised to see that the book was in excellent condition. I will be pleased to give the book to her at Christmas. LD

Book Description
John Lewis Krimmel (1786-1821), a German emigrant who worked in Philadelphia between 1809 and 1821, was initially influenced by David Wilkie, William Hogarth, and Benjamin West. In this authoritative examination, Harding traces the development of the artist through his sketchbook images and oil paintings. Seven sketchbooks now in the library at Winterthur contain approximately 700 separate drawings, ranging from quick pencil sketches to finished watercolor pictures, and are the key to reconstructing Krimmel's conceptual processes. When compared, they show clear distinctions in subject matter and drawing style, commensurate with the stylistic development evident in his paintings. Harding places Krimmel's specialty, genre art, in an international context by discussing his work in terms of larger stylistic trends and defines his use of democratic and moralizing themes within the political and social changes affecting Philadelphia and the Continent.
Book Description
What do Honus Wagner baseball cards, Queen Anne side chairs, and 19th-century ceramic lions have in common? At first glance, very little. Yet Evaluating Your Collection sets out to discuss this wide range of things that people collect, in order to guide them to a greater level of knowledge.
Is an object really worth the price? How does one know what to look for? Can one recognize fakes and invisible repairs? What about color, finish, and form? In 1961, Charles F. Montgomery, Winterthur's first director, articulated a system for educating the eye and appraising the quality of an object. His fourteen points of connoisseurship, along with additions by Winterthur curators, conservators, and educators, form an unbeatable system. Understanding them, and how they interrelate, equips readers with a basic expertise necessary to operate in the world of antiques.
Compact, reader-friendly, and illustrated in full color with objects largely from Winterthur's outstanding collection, this and future series volumes provide invaluable advice. Armed with tips from the experts, your trips to estate auctions, flea markets, or your grandmother's attic will never be the same.
