Book Description
Rich, warm, relaxed, naturalAdirondack camps, Western lodges, much more Glowing photos of dozens of unique rustic homes from across North America Spotlights craftspeople and creative forces in construction and décor Great idea book for anyone looking to design or decorate a primary or second home
Used to be that "rustic" meant a dusty, dumpy cabin in the woods. No more! Rustic Revisited reveals today's rusticcontemporary design that celebrates the honesty of all-natural, local materials such as wood, twig, stone, and bark. Rustic structures often have the same finish on the exterior and the interiorfor example, rough-hewn timber on both the outside and inside. The homes in Rustic Revisitedembrace the hand-crafted philosophy of rustic and show how to take that philosophy to new heights in a variety of styles, from the Adirondack camp to the Western lodge to the classic log cabin. Thirty unique homes, most planned by architects or interior designers, are showcased here, each lavishly photographed to allow readers exclusive access to interiors, exteriors, and noteworthy details in unusual rustic houses from New York to California, from Montana to Ontario, from North Carolina to Minnesota. These homes cover the full spectrum of rusticrenovations and new construction, traditional and cutting edge. A bonus chapter on decoration spotlights the craftspeople who are the creative forces of the movement.

Book Review.......2007-01-10
Many design ideas can be obtained from this book if you are remodeling or building a cabin.
Revisited and Exansive!.......2006-09-09
This book portrays a vast amount of information on lodge-camp- and cabin style.
Ann O'Leary identifies the historical as well as specific decorating details necessary to achieve these fabulous lodge and camp looks. This is a very in-depth, extensively well researched and beautifully written book! Well done!
Great Book........2006-06-27
What a great book! I bought it to give as a gift and ended up keeping it for myself. It's filled with beautiful photos of rustic style in all its forms: including Adirondack camps, lake houses in Wisconsin, Western lodges and Southern cottages just to name a few. I got many good ideas from it, and will be buying more copies to give to friends. I highly recommend it.

The Adirondack "Great Camp" style bears witness to the long and interesting history of New York State's northeastern corner, from the splint basketry and bark sheathing used by the native people, the furs and skins so prized by the earliest white traders, the thick walls built by the French soldiers eager to protect their North American strongholds, and the unpeeled log structures of early lumberjacks. As well-heeled sportsmen of the late 19th century flocked to the area's lakes and mountains, they brought the touches--electric lights, Persian carpets, Craftsman-style fixtures--that made luxurious resorts of these large cabins. The word camp certainly doesn't imply makeshift; as Alfred Donaldson wrote in 1921, "It can only be said that 'camp' in Adirondack parlance has become a loose term applied indiscriminately to anything from a tent to a palace created in the woods, in more or less isolation, primarily for pleasure and summer recreation."
Ann Stillman O'Leary has developed what amounts to a primer on camp style, concentrating mainly on contemporary interpretations. As this style has come back into favor, it has incorporated more Scandinavian and Japanese elements that complement its rugged simplicity, and the interiors reflect the 20th-century insistence on better light and warmth. In short, the modern Adirondack camp style is at once cozy and elegant, and the faithful and appealing examples shown here will lead many readers in search of ways to create their own little "camps" at home.
Book Description
More than 200 photographs and a rich narrative illuminate this rustic building and decorating style, from its beginnings in the Great Camps to spectacular contemporary interpretations.
“This book is a superb work that will inspire lovers of the Adirondack style. Ann Stillman O’Leary brings a contemporary note to the rich history of the region. Future owners, architects, and interior designers will find in this book a wonderful source of information and inspiration.” —Harvey Kaiser, author of
Great Camps of the Adirondacks
“I’ve always loved the Adirondacks. Ann Stillman O’Leary’s Adirondack Style brings me the closest I’ll ever get to living there.”
—Mary Emmerling, author of
Mary Emmerling’s Quick Decorating and creative director of Country Home magazine
Customer Reviews:
Adirondack Awesome!!.......2004-12-10
I totally "loved" this book. One of my favorites. I am totally into "camp, cabin, and adirondack" decorating books and this book totally delivered the goods. Gorgous pictures gives one many cozy decorating ideas and just a book to daze and dream away an afternoon with.
Handsome but limited.......2001-08-06
In looking for ideas for the second home getaway we are planning, I came across this book and added it to my collection. It is handsome but, as the title would suggest, limited to one style. If that is your thing, fine. In this genre, the book that keeps rising to the top of the little stack on my coffee table is called SECOND HOME/Finding Your place in the Sun (or Fun or something like that). Second Home shows rustic styles and romantic cottage ones, too, taking me on a little tour of the United States as I turn the pages. The author obviously did his homework, too, because Second Home is filled with information on how to shop for real estate, evalute an area, decide what you want (and where you want it), etc.
A nice look at one style.......2001-01-20
As I just wrote in a review of Cabin Fever, this book, too, is a delight to look at. But it is limited (as its title says, of course) to one style that is a bit more rustic than what we have in mind. Still, this is a lovely book to peruse. As we gather information on vacation homes, our favorite book is a new one called Second Home, which includes visits to everything from oceanside homes and lake cottages to mountain cabins. Second Home also includes information on how to shop for a second home, how to decide what location is right, and tips on building, decorating and so on. I've never met a vacation house book I didn't like, and I like them all. But Second Home is our favorite because it has such variety of home styles and helpful tips in it.
A dream book.......2000-11-03
In planning the vacation home we hope to have soon, we bought this book and a new one called SECOND HOME. Adirondack Style is more of a dream book and includes historical information about the style. It's also limited to one style, of course. The book called Second Home works on a couple levels as a dream book but it also includes information on shopping, building, decorating, and so on, and it shows a wide range of second home styles around the country. We like both, but if we had to pick only one, it would be Second Home. (A book called Cabin Fever is fun, too, but limited to very rustic styles.)
Dream, dream, dream!.......2000-01-11
Between this book and another, also from amazon, called Cottage Style, I have more than enough to fuel my vacation house daydreams. A great start for 2000 and for my own dreams of early retirement.
Book Description
Garden photographer Janet Loughrey has covered the vast Adirondacks region to document how people have overcome the area's challenging mountain climate to create beautiful gardens for the past 150 years. Her profiles of contemporary gardeners and landscapers and their creations are supplemented with fascinating historic photos of the lavish landscaping of famed Adirondack-style estates such as Nirvana and the Knapp Estate and grand old hotel resorts such as Scaroon Manor and Sagamore.
Customer Reviews:
Well done and beautiful.......2005-07-23
Very beautiful and informative. Photo's are superb. Text is a well researched and fascinating history of gardens old and new. Keen gardener's eye and knowledge is evident throughout.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2005-08-10
I have several books on rustic decorating and that type of thing. This book is one of my favorites. It's packed full of information, and acknowledges that the average person isn't going to be able to go out and furnish an entire house full of Bellinger paintings and antique Molesworth furniture. You will get a lot of ideas and have fun reading this book. But watch out...apparently this book is tasty for dogs, as my Bernese Mountain Dog loved it also! :-)
Filled with full-color photographs of rustic items.......2004-10-10
The beautifully illustrated collaboration of Dian Zillner and Suzanne Silverthorn, Cabin Style: Decorating With Rustic, Adirondack, And Western Collectibles is more than just another book of themed interior design ideas, it is also an invaluable and up-to-date price guide reference ideally organized for the benefit of do-it-yourself enthusiasts and collectors, as well as seasoned interior design professionals. Filled cover-to-cover with full-color photographs of rustic items ranging from wood canisters with pinecone designs to vintage fishing calendars and lanterns, and much more, each collectible is succinctly described with identification and manufacture information as well as a recommended appraisal of its value. Nearly all the articles presented are quite economical, going for $25 to $75 or so. An excellent sourcebook, Cabin Style is enjoyable simply to page through for inspiration.
Book Description
During the 1850s, New York's Adirondack region saw the birth of a leisure world centered in the area's large resort hotels. These spectacular structures clearly reflected the dramatic social and technological changes that unfolded in the United States between 1850 and 1950. In his new book, Bryant F. Tolles, Jr. studies the architectural development of these extraordinary retreats in order to explore changing American attitudes toward nature and landscape, fashion and culture, transportation, and innovations of various sorts. He also delves into the resorts' eventual decline, which was rooted in their vulnerability as wooden structures as well as in the ever-changing preferences of their guests.
With over two hundred illustrations--many of them historic photographs, along with architectural plans, reproductions of printed "views," and recent shots of the remaining hotels and their related buildings--Resort Hotels of the Adirondacks captures the glorious spirit of a bygone world and reveals fundamental shifts in American cultural expectations. Tolles brings his chronicle up to the present by exploring the two surviving grand Adirondack resort hotels--the second Hotel Champlain (at Bluff Point on Lake Champlain) and the third Sagamore Hotel (at Bolton Landing on Lake George). The book concludes with a discussion of several imaginatively conceived but never-built resort hotels.
Tolles has utilized an authoritative array of sources, including guidebooks, local histories, newspaper articles, maps, county and town records, business records, guest correspondence, and diary entries. His comprehensive history creates a detailed picture of luxury in a resort setting and enriches our understanding of American life and culture during a period of radical change.

Book Description
Early in his career, critics and collectors widely recognized that Harold Weston (1894-1972), was capturing and saying something unusual in his paintings. "There is a young American painter," wrote Duncan Phillips, "who stirs in me the hope for a re-birth on this new soil of something that was not lost to the art of painting with the passing of Vincent van Gogh."
Along with 104 color and ten black-and-white plates of Weston's works, the catalog includes essays that cover myriad aspects of Weston's life and art. The Adirondack Museum's chief curator Caroline M. Welsh explores nature and wilderness preservation as themes in twentieth-century art and places Weston in the context of his contemporaries who painted the Adirondacks. The biographical essay by the exhibition's guest curator Rebecca Foster follows the unfolding of a career in parallel to the unfolding of a life. Weston's rich technique is explored by Stephen Bennett-Phillips, curator at the Phillips Collection, in an analysis of the painting. Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr., curator of American art at the Fogg Art Museum, provides an introduction to the catalogue.

Cute and Sweet.......2005-12-29
This small photo book is very cute and sweet. Any cat lover would like it. I think it is better that "What Cats Are." Don't get me wrong, that one is very nice, but if you can only get one I would pick "Kittens."

Customer Reviews:
Three excellent illustrated poems..........2007-01-26
Another Suburban Romance consist of three poems by comics legend Alan Moore, adapted by Antony Johnston, and lavishly illustrated by Juan Jose Ryp. This is not Watchmen. This was not even written as sequential art, it was adapted. And that doesn't mean it isn't good. It's great. The first time I read it I was expecting more of a normal Alan Moore story, and I was fairly disappointed by the first two stories, and was merely entertained by the third. The second time I read it, I knew what it was and I loved it. It just clicked and made sense realizing that these are poems about the lower moments of life, the dirty underworld that permeates all of society. This probably will not be a life changing read, but it can be a very enjoyable and thought provoking read if you aren't expecting something comletely different.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK...........2005-05-23
The other two reviews of this book are pretty harsh. I'm not going to be as extreme as they are but neither can I offer the book a great deal of praise. Alan Moore has always been a bit of a tough one for me to get a grasp on. While I have enjoyed his work, I'm not as ready to confer "God" status on him the way so many others are eager to do. Yes his run on Swamp Thing and the Watchmen mini-series were both fantastic, but that was nearly 20 years ago as well. Moore seemingly has always had the free rein to let his creative juices go. But to me the toughest writing for comics is having to take an established character and stay within editorial guidelines and try and do something with the character. And no, he didn't do that with Swamp Thing who was a third tier character nearing cancellation for the second time when he took over on Swamp Thing #20. Want difficult? Try doing something new and exciting with the Sub-Mariner...
What does all this have to do with THIS graphic novel? Well nothing really. But just don't tell me it's great just because Alan Moore wrote it. This isn't a novel at all but rather three illustrated poems. I'm sure I'm not as deep as Alan Moore and if there is a connection between the three poems, other than its grim, violent, nihilistic view of the world, I just don't see it. But then again, I'm not a big fan of poetry, either. The best of the three is "Old Gangsters Never Die" an ode to 30's era gangsters like John Dillinger and Al Capone. The book is illustrated by Juan Jose Ryp in a detailed, chaotic style that is reminiscent of 60's and 70's underground comics. I suppose I liked it a little bit more than the other two reviewers but ultimately I'd say this one should be reserved only for hardcore Alan Moore fans.
Another Avatar Ripoff..............2003-08-13
Once again, Avatar backs the truck up to the Alan Moore cash vault by releasing a "Graphic Novel" composed of adaptations of Moore's poetry. To be fair, I am NOT a fan of poetry, no matter WHO the author is. Although I love Alan Moore's work, I resent being tricked by Avatar, not once, not twice, but a whopping THREE times, with their so-called "Original" Alan Moore graphic novels. The art, by Juan Jose Ryp, is really nice; It's intricate detail is reminiscent of Geoff Darrow's work on Hard Boiled and The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, but great art in the service of a non-existent story is meaningless. Poetry fans might like this, but I didn't. This is the LAST time I'll be burned by Avatar.
buyer beware.......2003-07-24
Alan Moore's Another Suburban Romance is an attempt to make a buck off Moore's name. Avatar Press actually calls it a "graphic novel," but it isn't. This book is based on Moore's performance works. In other words, someone has taken Moore's words, drew illustrations (black and white) for them, and placed them in some kind of sequential order (no, Moore isn't the one who did it).
The truth is, ASR consists of three illustrated "poems," only one of which (the title piece) is any good.
Save your money; if you are interested, pick it up off the shelf at your local comic book store, and start reading it. (You can read the whole thing in less than 10 minutes.) After reading some of it, my guess is that you'll place it back on the shelf.
If you are interested in Moore, read Watchmen, Promethea, Swamp Thing, or just about anything else, and forget ASR.
