Book Description

Architecture should be an affirmation of place—that is, the physical product of a truly environmentally responsive approach. To work with the place and its traditions is not to be trapped in a dull set of conventions. The tension between timeless ways and the all-too-timely circumstances that call a new building into being should lead to a vital architecture. The tension between the past and the presence of the past should foster an architecture more culturally resonant than one that is either is all about the past or all about the present. —Robert A. M. Stern

Robert A. M. Stern is dedicated to the synthesis of tradition and innovation. In more than thirty-five years of practice, he has produced a wide range of building types with a variety of stylistic influences, all inspired by the great legacy of American architecture. His firm, Robert A. M. Stern Architects, was first recognized for its distinguished houses, and residential design remains the cornerstone of the practice. This beautifully illustrated monograph—a companion to the best-selling Robert A. M. Stern: Houses—presents twenty-six of the firm's most memorable houses.

Located in diverse settings across North America—from a valley in Colorado with sweeping views of the Aspen mountains, to a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound, to an island off the coast of British Columbia—these remarkable houses reveal the architect's emphasis on the importance of context and his dedication to exploring the nature of place. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region, while gracefully reflecting its unique natural surroundings. Whether they are shingle style "cottages" by the sea, colonial Georgian country estates, or elegant Regency designs, Stern's houses are unique both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past—a dialogue he believes lies at the heart of architecture.

3 out of 5 stars Very Similar to Houses.......2006-02-23

I thoroughly loved his first residential book "Houses." With the amount of work he has done I expected this book to focus on new work but many of the same projects and pictures from the first book were used in this one.

4 out of 5 stars Stern Yet Elegant.......2006-01-07

This book on Robert Stern, the latest in a series, is very well executed. Mr. Stern really has a knack for anachronistic grand homes, they are a throw back to another time, but with all the modern luxuries money can buy. Stern has a real feel for the kind of gardens that complement each type of home, and the interaction between the two is often quite breathtaking. The images in this book are first rate and the homes are amazing. If you appreciate excellent photography, elegant architecture, and spectacular homes and gardens then you will love this book

Book Description

These distinguished houses are located in diverse settings across the United States, from San Francisco's Russian Hill to the Rocky Mountains to the Long Island and New England coasts. In every case, Stern has emphasized the importance of context by exploring the nature of the place through houses that embody the region's vernacular architectural heritage, as well as gracefully reflect each site's unique natural setting. Whether considering classical New York town houses, Shingle Style "cottages" by the sea, or Scandinavian log houses as reinterpreted on the American frontier, Stern has fostered a strong sense of architectural continuity and connection to the past by participating in the dialogue across time that he believes lies at the heart of architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Stern.......2005-10-23

Robert Sterns homes are so elegant and tasteful, even if they are often enormous in size. This book does a wonderful job of captureing these homes at their best, the photographs are vivid and very well done and the homes themselves are amazing. Mr. Stern has a knack for making a traditional home somehow eclectic, he is true to the style, but adds interesting touches that at first glance you would not think would work, but somehow in Robert Stern hands they come out spectacular. If you have any interest in amazing residental architecture, then buy this book, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars True craftsmanship.......2002-03-01

What a beautiful display of true Architecture for Architectures' sake. Yeah, you may need a bit of $$ to personally afford buildings with this calibur of workmanship, but it will be well worth it and timeless. Builders and purchasers of todays' Suburb homes need to look to great works like these to realize the real issue of urban sprawl.

Great book. Great photo's. Great ideas. Great craftmanship. Outstanding architecture.

Whether it's a house in the Hamptons, an addition to a famous museum, or a new building for an Ivy League campus, contemporary architecture doesn't get any more coolly, cleanly serviceable than Gwathmey Siegel, the large firm that since 1965 has executed some of the most high-profile private and institutional commissions in the United States (with a few abroad). Gwathmey Siegel's history of concise, user-friendly innovation is well reflected here, in this comely monograph of 26 residential, corporate, academic and museum/arts-related projects spanning 35 years; per custom, it should be a hernia-inducing 10-pound hardcover, but instead is a near-palmsized paperback that still manages to convey the sweep and scale of GS's work in its excellent full-color photography with succinct annotations by firm founder Charles Gwathmey. Appropriately, the fun kicks off with the now-famous house and nearby studio Gwathmey designed for his parents in the Hamptons' Amagansett in 1965. Its basic principles of several levels, volumes, and niches intricately carved into a basic cube would play out again and again in the firm's work, which always manages to cunningly incorporate all sorts of technical solutions and aesthetic charms into volumes whose outer limits possess the simple, geometric logic of buildings that children have long fashioned from a few wooden squares, rectangles, and cylinders. The Gwathmey Residence and the other Hamptons residences featured here (like the 1972 Cogan and the 1983 de Menil), as well as houses in southern California, Vermont, and Switzerland, collectively illustrate 35 years of palatial postmodern minimalism, a stripped-down, late 20th-century bookend to the rococo wedding cakes commissioned by the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and other assorted robber barons of the century just preceding.

But because GS's residential projects, as diversely striking as they are, continuously manage to look (especially from the outside) like anything but places where people actually live, the book's subsequent sections offer almost a sense of relief--these are the kinds of projects at which the firm excels, and those upon which it has built its considerable reputation: the gleaming, Meier-esque white tiles and columns of its 1987 office building for IBM in Greensboro, North Carolina; an ingenious new set of unapologetically modern innards (1973) jutting out of the august, old stone exterior of Princeton University's Whig Hall, whose original wood interior was destroyed in a fire; an elegantly high-tech Science, Industry and Business Library for New York City (1996); blond wood, luminous marble, and stainless steel fitted inside the 1911 Beaux Arts envelope of the former B. Altman department store; and--perhaps the firm's most high-profile (and controversial) commission to date--the 1992 renovation and addition to Frank Lloyd Wright's landmark Guggenheim Museum, also in New York City--an undertaking that managed to vastly increase the museum's gallery and administrative space and address omissions or weaknesses in the original structure, all while linking it to a discreetly handsome limestone rectilinear addition that deferred not to a gamut of political interests but to Wright's original plans for a proposed annex.

Many other notable projects are included in the book as well, including an array of new buildings for Cornell University and an addition to Harvard's venerable Fogg Museum, not to mention the warm-toned Museum of Contemporary Art (1996) that has redefined downtown Miami, and a renovation/addition for the University of Washington's Henry Art Gallery in Seattle (1997). A complex multivolume, multilevel, multiline configuration that somehow manages remarkably to leave the gallery's charming, original red-brick structure from 1927 as its centerpiece, it is this last entry which serves as a fitting final reminder that no one takes simple shapes and fashions them into something chic, clean, and clever quite as deftly or respectfully as Gwathmey Siegel. --Timothy Murphy

Book Description

The international residential, commercial, and institutional work that positioned this New York firm among the world's architectural elite is featured in this volume, which takes an unprecedented look at Gwathmey Siegel's contributions over the last 35 years. More than 30 projects are documented in photographs, drawings, and descriptions. From Charles Gwathmey's design and construction of Gwathmey Studio and House to the Levitt Center for University Advancement at the University of Iowa, this is the most complete survey of the firm's work published. It reveals the Gwathmey Siegel design philosophy and certifies why their work, along with that of Frank Gehry, Robert Stern, and Richard Meier, is the most powerful in American architecture.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful Work in an Absurdly Small Format.......2000-08-15

This monograph documents the firms finest projects over the last 35 years in microsized barely readable format. The work is beautiful but the book is absurdly small. It's an example of the new 50% sized architectural monographs aimed at architects who look at images and do not care to read micro text. Many of the postage stamp sized photographs are not legible. Why include 1"x1" photographs? Why are 2 important buildings on the front and back covers mislabeled? Gwathmey Siegel are fine architects doing high profile projects that are aesthetic and functional. This book is aesthetic without being functional. I am amazed that an established, leader of the architectural profession allowed such impressive work to be published in such a poorly designed book. This book confirms the worst fears about our profession: architects care about aesthetics at the expense of function.

Book Description

The architectural heritage of Newport, Rhode Island encompasses the rich and lively history of the people who have lived there. The city's public and private buildings reflect the varied attitudes, styles and tastes adopted by the American nation, from the colonial settlers in the seventeenth century who sought religious and political freedom to the socialite robber barons of the late nineteenth century whose enormous wealth bought the freedom to pursue life's pleasures. Simple clapboard houses and religious buildings exist in he same context as the opulent summer cottages and mansions, built with the finest materials available. Newport architecture presents a splendidly diverse picture of American building at its best.

Internationally acclaimed photographer Roberto Schezen records the great range of Newport buildings. Focusing especially on the outstanding private houses and compounds throughout the city, Schezen's keen eye captures the magnificent decorative details, grand interiors and dramatic settings that give Newport an unsurpassed position as a national architectural treasure. The many styles that are part of the American architectural vocabulary are presented, including the Greek Revival, the Stick and Shingles Styles, and the eclectic ostentation that characterized the so-called Gilded Age.

The accompanying text tells the stories behind the numerous residences and public buildings, shedding light on the personalities behind the construction of landmarks such as the Breakers, Marble House, Touro Synagogue, the Quaker Meeting House, the Newport Casino and the Redwood Library. The celebrated and the famous contributed to Newport's growth, from its early days as a trading center to its development as a major summer resort colony to its most recent incarnation as a model for preservation efforts. Newport Houses, for the first time, brings the whole story together in an intriguing and comprehensive fashion.

This book covers all of the most famous homes, I would not say that it is comprehensive, but it does a very credible job of discussing the best homes. The photographs are well conceived and the text, though not indepth, is informative. If you are someone interested in the most famous mansions of Newport and appreciate quality photography then I believe you will be pleased with this book, if you are however, looking for an indepth guide to the all of the mansions, then you may want to wait on that book, which unfortunitly, as far as I can tell, has not been written.

    Book Description

Robert A.M. Stern is one of the country's most prolific and inventive architects. Working within a historical tradition of domestic architecture, he has created rich and evocative designs that call on the forms of the past and the values of American culture while responding to contemporary needs.

The American Houses of Robert A.M. Stern presents thirty-one of his most significant houses in the United States. This diverse group, which ranges in location from the seaside to the mountains to the city, displays the important characteristics of Stern's architecture: a sympathetic relationship to the site, a richness of plan and spatial complexity, a distinctive use of natural light, and elegant interior detail. As demonstrated by the projects presented here-- generously illustrated through color photographs, drawings, and watercolors-- the architect has created in each house a complete domestic world for his clients to inhabit. The visual presentation of the houses is accompanied by an introduction which provides an overview of the common themes in the architect's work, and a project list, which includes detailed information about each project.

            Book Description

The unique Japanese cartoon style known as manga, with its exaggerated stylistic characters and vivid colors, has caught the attention of America. Now, with the advent of digital tools like Photoshop and Painter, manga artists have discovered new ways of bringing their artwork to life and onto the computer -- with astounding results!

This complete guide presents a wealth of information by exploring the digital possibilities of creating manga-style artwork. It details the entire process, from initial rough sketches, to the finished color image, with in-depth instructions and illustrations that demonstrate the intricacies of each technique. It also deals with a variety of inking and coloring styles.revealing the secrets of how to achieve smooth, highly detailed line art directly on screen, how to recreate the appearance of traditional animation with cel-art techniques, and how to achieve a soft, dreamy, or traditional look with airbrush, watercolor, and painting tools. It also explains how custom backgrounds, special effects, and the use of filters can add the finishing touches that exemplify professional results.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars New to Computer Coloring? Pick this book up!!!.......2007-09-30

When I first got Photoshop, intent on learning how to color my drawings in that comic book style, I didn't know where to start. So, I started surfing Amazon for computer coloring books, and bought a few. Some of them were good, some just plain awful, but of all of the ones I bought, this is certainly the best.

"Digital Manga Workshop" is an excellent introduction for amateurs looking to get their work colored via computer. It provides handy, step-by-step guides on the process, and is extremely useful. Even the novice Photoshop user (much of the book focuses on the use of Photoshop, much to my delight) will have no trouble following their instructions. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars A great intro to digital coloring.......2007-02-11

As many have already stated, this book has little to specifically to do with manga. I personally think the title and drawing style were probably chosen to be more catchy and specific than just "digital coloring." There's no shortage of digital artwork out there that has nothing to do with manga or anime style, and this book is relevant to anyone wanting to learn to color their artwork digitally, regardless of how it's drawn.

Whereas many web coloring tutorials are either very locked in about techinque or horrendously general, Digital Manga Workshop covers several specific options. It shows not just how to color in the typical cel style of a lot of digital artwork, but also airbrush, painting and watercolor styles as well.

The book gives instruction in both Photoshop and Painter depending on which is best suited for the style being covered and even offer some low-to-no cost alternatives to those programs.

The book also covers the important step before and after the coloring process, such as scanning and digitally inking drawings so you have god base to start with, and export so all your hard work doesn't end up as a blotchy web graphic.

Digital Manga Workshop definitely isn't the be all/end all book of digital coloring, but considering the wealth of information covered for such a low price, it's surely a worthwhile book to have around

2 out of 5 stars Misleading title; really digital anime style.......2007-01-19

I wish I could give this book a good review. Unfortunately, I can't. The title is very misleading. If you expect this book to teach you how to draw manga images digitally (as I did), you will be very disappointed. 99.9% of all manga images are black and white, and use frames, speech bubbles with text, sound effects, black and white line effects, and tones (black and white patterns that read as gray when printed). This book does NOT cover any of this.

It also contains some ludicrously incorrect information. For instance, it says that unlike American comics (where you have a penciler, inker, and letterer), Japanese artists do everything themselves. Nothing could be further from the truth, as any interview with a mangaka (Japanese manga artist) or perusal of the copyright page will tell you. In fact, most manga are created by a primary artist and several assistants.

Here's an even worse example. In the introduction to digital inking, they say, "In manga-style artwork, inked lines are usually contour lines...the linework of a character's hand would depict the outline of the fingers, but wouldn't show shading, wrinkles, or folds in the skin. It is up to the colors to show depth and texture." Um, except, manga is published exclusively IN BLACK AND WHITE. There are no colors! Have they ever read a manga? My mind boggles. Pick up any manga and open it and you will see for yourself. They go on to say, that "inking techniques such as hatching, stippling, and spotting black...are atypical in manga style art, but can be employed for stylistic purposes to achieve a distintice look."

This would be news to CLAMP, the studio that created many manga bestsellers, who are famous for their beautiful black and white line work. Or to, well, any of the mangakas, really.

This book teaches very basic color, digital techniques in anime `cel' style. It focuses on Photoshop and Painter, and ignores Illustrator and the manga-specific software (such as ComicWorks and Manga Studio) completely. They don't even cover the fact that most Japanese mangakas as well as most American digital art, is done on the Mac platform.

I gave it two stars because it does teach some simple techniques to create layered, color digital art, but these techniques are better covered in the many free online tutorials available on the web or in other, more comprehensive art technique books.

            5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-10-09

I love this book, I picked it up after I saw the interview on G4tv and fell in love with it. My art has expanded so much since I read this book. I've been thinking about using my computer for my art for a long time and when I saw this I said to myself " wow this was just what I'm lloking for." If you even think you would enjoy this style of art I highly recommend this book.

            Book Description

Digital video cameras have become an increasingly popular method of communicating with others across the Internet. From video e-mail clips to websites that broadcast people's lives for all to see, webcams have become a way for people to battle against the perceived threat of depersonalization caused by computers and to monitor areas from anywhere in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Great help for beginners.......2002-12-09

I was looking at webcams for a Xmas gift for myself and didn't have any idea where to start or what to look for. This book not only helped me pick out a webcam, now I've got a whole bunch of new ideas how to use it.

5 out of 5 stars This book has everything!.......2001-07-09

I had received a web-cam for Father's Day and was confused about exactly what I was supposed to do with it. Went and got this book, and suddenly it is all starting to make sense. Got a webpage set up and now I talk with my daughter, who is studying abroad, almost every day with my web-cam.

It looks like the authors are also redoing their website at mycamguide.com. They've got all the web references mentioned in the book online, so you can go right to them. I've been very happy with my purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what a great read!.......2001-06-24

I wanted to thank the authors of this great book. I am 64 years old and have NEVER used a Webcam before. The authors of this book walked me through the entire process of getting my Webcam up and running, from the way to configure my computer to the proper lighting in my computer room.

Most computer books, like those Dummies series, are way over my head. But neither author here takes themselves too seriously. They gave me the facts, and made it interesting too. Now I have weekly Webcam chats with my granddaughter in college and we both very much enjoy the time we spend together. This book made that possible.

If I can use this book to become a Webcam expert, then anyone can. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars TOO MUCH FLUFF!.......2001-05-03

If you're looking for serious info on Webcams, don't waste your time here. The author includes A LOT of FLUFF that has NOTHING to do with Webcams.

The author should have realized that I'm not buying this book to learn everything there is to know about Internet connections or about System Ram or Computer processors. Although these items have a bearing on webcam performance, the author takes too much time to wade through these areas (e.g. telling me how much I should expect to pay for each connection and how not to get "taken" by a "deal" from an ISP . . . This may be helpful stuff to someone, but not to the target market of this book! More than likely, most readers already have a computer, an internet connection, etc. Just tell me about Webcams!).

I'm on page 100 now and have yet to really learn much about Webcams. So, I would NOT recommend this purchase. If you are looking for a better book, you might try "Webcams for Dummies". I don't own this one, but I did glance through it before I bought the "guide" and it appeared to have more direct info on webcams and skipped a lot of the fluff.

5 out of 5 stars The Accidental Webcam Tourist.......2000-09-07

If you love to travel but often don't have the time or money, like I do, then try traveling on the web.

I learned through reading 'The Guide to Webcams' that I can see lots of different places and visit areas of the world I will probably not be able to go to soon.

I was surprised to see how many webcams there are in the world and the diversity of possibilities webcams can offer to the common Internet surfer. By using the guide, I setup my own webcam and keep in touch with my familly, who lives on the other side of the country in Portland, Or.

The book was easy to read and informative...quick, easy and fun.

            Book Description

In the last few years, cheap webcams have revolutionized amateur astronomy by providing a very inexpensive alternative to purpose-made astronomical CCD cameras, which use refrigerated imaging chips and are thus extremely expensive. Webcams are capable of more advanced work than 'normal' digital cameras because their simple construction makes it easy to remove the webcam's lens, allowing it to be interfaced directly to a telescope. Using a webcam is not difficult but most amateur astronomers who have tried to do this do not achieve the finest results, despite the webcam's potential. There are numerous imaging and image processing tricks and techniques, and all of them are needed to get the best results.

Along with webcam technology has come simple-to-use image processing and enhancement using a PC: the most powerful technique is, 'stacking' in which the best images (out of hundreds) are selected and summed automatically to provide startlingly good results.

"Lunar and Planetary Webcam User’s Guide" de-mystifies the jargon of webcams and computer processing, and provides detailed hints and tips for imaging the Sun, Moon and planets with a webcam. He looks at each observing target separately, describing and explaining all specialised techniques in context.

Glance through the images in this book to see just how much you can – easily – achieve by using a webcam with your telescope!

5 out of 5 stars A Romp Through the Solar System!.......2007-07-04

I was lucky enough to find out about imaging with a webcam when hardly anyone outside QCUIAG(Quickcam and Unconventional Imaging Astronomy Group)had given it a second thought. There were individuals in that group that were, even then, turning out images of the Solar System that rivaled professional observatories with these inexpensive devices that were never intended to be turned skyward. But because of the forward-thinking of some of their members and people's unceasing drive to tinker
(and discover!), major monthly publications like Sky and Telescope and Astronomy quickly understood the power these little cams wielded and began to pay considerable attention to the images that were beginning to fill their reader gallery pages.
As with any technology, the quality of the cameras, their chips, and ultimately the software that was being written to drive them, resulted in amateur images that were making everyone take notice and want to get in on this versatile and simple method of capturing exciting images of our nearest neighbours. Until I discovered this gem on Amazon, I was pretty much limited to whatever knowledge I could acquire about imaging with a webcam to what was posted on the net.
This book in the "Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series" has changed all that. It is a wonderfully concise and richly illustrated guidebook for both beginner and advanced amateur alike. It introduces in the most basic way how anyone with a modest telescope and simple webcam can turn out world-class images. Now to put this new knowledge to work in improving my own imaging techniques!

This is an outstanding reference for you astronomy buffs who use webcams and RegiStax for planetary imaging. Mobberley's book is also sprinkled with all sorts of observations, like living in the Low Country on the coast can sometimes be an advatage for observing. This is not intuitive.

              Book Description

Augmented Reality is a natural way to explore 3D objects and data, as it brings virtual objects into the real world, where we live, rather than forcing us to learn how to navigate inside the computer. With video-see-through technology, AR handheld devices such as tablet PC's, PDA's, or camera cell phones, (or in many cases just a webcam and our standard computer monitor), you hold the device up and "see through" the display to view both the real world and the superimposed virtual object. You can move around and see the virtual object, model, animation, or game from different views as the AR system performs alignment of the real and virtual cameras automatically.

This book will introduce you to Augmented Reality (AR), provide detailed explanations of how the technology works, and provide samples for you to try on your own. Code samples using the freely downloadable ARTag software SDK in C++ and C# are included; all you need is a computer, printer, and a webcam.
