Book Description

Ricardo Legorreta is the most renowned architect working in Mexico today. His signature use of brilliant saturated reds, purples, and yellows, thick-textured walls of stucco and plaster, and mysterious, light-filled spaces has earned him a devoted following and a distinguished international reputation. Legorreta's highly personal aesthetic combines a deep appreciation of traditional Mexican architectural elements and culture with a thoroughly modern sense of design that reflects his early training with the Mexican master Luis Barragán.

This long-awaited monograph showcases 25 of the architect's most recent and celebrated projects in Mexico, Texas, and California, with stunning color photography throughout and special focus on nine private houses.

Among the projects shown here are vacation houses in Mexico and in Rancho Santa Fe and Sonoma County, California; the house of actor Ricardo Montalbán and the renowned Greenberg House in Los Angeles; the new Metropolitan Cathedral in Managua, Nicaragua; El Papalote Children's Museum and the City of the Arts, both in Mexico City; the new San Antonio Main Library in Texas; several high-profile buildings in Monterrey, Mexico, including an office complex designed to house an impressive collection of Mexican art and sculpture; and the famous Camino Real hotels in Mexico City and Ixtapa.

An introduction and an interview with Legorreta, a list of projects, and a bibliography provide background and insight into this architect's prolific career.

This was a gift for friends who love Mexican and Southwestern architecture and has completely wowed all who have seen it.

4 out of 5 stars simply written & presented but effective.......2001-02-28

This is a massive book but readers would be glad to know unlike other architecture books that are filled with academics' essays, pictures take precedent in this instance. Principle photography of this book was taken by Lourdes Legorreta, the daughter of the great architect himself (who happened to be an architect in her own rite & so does Ricardo's son, Victor) & therefore, naturally, she would have empathy of the best angles to be taken of all buildings featured in this book. The preface was written by Ricardo himself & it is complemented by poems that gave us insight of what architecture meant to him. Then, we move on to a chapter dedicated to discussions of elements of architecture such as wall, light, scale, geometry, emotion, humanity. Suffice to say that every & each elements mentioned are just as important & they are intertwined with one another. Subsequently, there was the interview with the great man himself. There were discussions about his relationships with Jose Villagran & Luis Barragan, who seemed to have influenced him quite significantly which he concurred. He described both architects as chalk & cheese. One of them was a perfectionist, emphasised upon the importance of knowing how to build on top of knowing how to design. Because Jose was a Rationist and that all his buildings were functional and anonymous but devoid of spirituality, Ricardo started to wander elsewhere for other enlightenment. That, he found in Luis Barragan, who reminded him the importance of landscaping, as one cohesiveness with the building (I.M Pei believed in the same ideal). Ricardo also joked about how academics interpreted Luis' works in all seriousness and he's adamant that if Luis were alive now, he would have laughed at them all as he designed buildings for the passion and luv of them without any complications of -isms. Then, there were also discussions of several artists that influenced his works, his children's involvement in the same industry, his origin. He also took the opportunity to correct the public's perception about his huge dosage of bold colours. He explained that he isn't using the colours for the sake of using them but using them to emphasise different planes, making the mass changes thru the manipulation of light at different time of the day, and along the way, the users' emotion are taken to yet another height. He couldn't reiterate more that without happiness, what's the point of architecture. Ricardo has this philosophy, quoted by Gropius, which was quite inspiring and something that he takes to his heart, "keep working as if you were going to live forever because if your goals are good, somebody will pick up your flag and keep progressing". And the rest of the book is dedicated in showing Ricardo's testimony or contribution towards architecture: bold colours (& some subtle ones depending upon the clients' requirements) buildings with mass, walls that contained the mystery beyond the walls & thus, enticed people to explore deeper within, forms to excite & stimulate the senses. To complement the pictures, there are floor plan and brief notes or quotations by Ricardo. To finish the book nicely, there is also his biography (doesn't say that he's Year 2000 AIA Gold Medal Award Winner), list of projects (that doesn't include the work that he's done in Japan & other latter works), select bibliography, & project credits (which provided the readers with everything you need to know about his projects). Worthwhile reading. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A useful study guide disguised as a coffee table book.......2000-05-19

I first came to know the work of Legorreta on a visit to San Antonio & it's new library. The loud colors and monumental scale struck me as odd and distracting in a library setting, but it definitely was a building that made you look twice and want to explore it more. Soon after, I moved to DFW and lived a stones throw away from Solona (the IBM complex). Here is where I learned the true beauty and intelligence of Legorreta's designs and his special notice of the individual and their experience. The colors no longer struck me as loud, but as vibrant and cheerful. This book embraces and shows off this enthusiasm and intelligence VERY WELL. This is a very attractive book with lots of pictures that do justice to Legorreta's palette of colors. There is some narative for each project giving the basic information along with the main design considerations. Also along with each project is a partial floorplan. This is most useful in the study of what is happening in the pictures. When you find an element or view in a picture that intrigues you, the floorplan let's you better understand how that effect was achieve and how it interacts within the context of its adjoining spaces. This is especially important in understanding Legorreta's use of entry sequences and volumes. This also allows you to study how he uses water, stones, and other features in ways that can be experienced from multiple vantage points to create multiple perspectives. If you have experienced Legorreta's Architecture in person and want to understand more about the places you've been, or if you want to see new places that you WILL WANT to experience, then I whole heartedly recommend this book. Buy it, and Enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful photographic essay on a very talented architect.......1999-05-01

beautiful photos and thoughtful text covering some of the work of, arguably, mexico's finest architect. this book does a excellent job of capturing the serene spirit of legoretta's work - having just returned from a week at his hotel in ixtapa, mexico, i can speak to the power, spirit and beauty of legoretta's work, and to the success with which this book conveys these feelings.

          Book Description

Book Three in the Lake Emily series

In Lake Emily, life’s greatest battles
are won by the power of friendship

Virginia Morgan is used to helping others–it’s who she is. A wife. A mother. A grandmother. A friend. But when Virginia suffers a debilitating stroke, she can no longer wear that apron. It is a change that sends her into the depths of hopelessness. Can she find her way to seeing that life is still well worth living? Or will she give up hope and sink deeper into despair?

Meanwhile, the Morgans and Biddles discover that each season of life has its adjustments–for Trudy Biddle marriage and a meddling mother-in-law, for Mae and Peter Morgan the challenges of keeping the family farm afloat as they welcome a new member into their family, and for young Jessie Wise hopes for a new mother.

Filled with the enchantment that makes Lake Emily everyone’s hometown, Aprons on a Clothesline is a lovely reminder that hope can be found even in the tragedies of life and that joy waits in the most unexpected places.

          Customer Reviews:

          1 out of 5 stars VERY DULL.......2007-08-15

I kept waiting for this book to get better. After all, a lot of people gave it great reviews here on Amazon. But, it never got better.

This is a very dull book. I think it was meant for the Christian market, not that Christian markets are supposed to be dull. But this one is.

I understand that it is supposed to portray feelings in every day life, but the main character (Virginia) spends a lot of time feeling sorry for herself instead of counting her blessings or trying to rise above her misfortune. I could not feel sorry for her since she was doing such a good job of feeling sorry for herself.

The characters are whiners. Okay, the father should try to balance his life between being a conductor of a big symphony and his family, but give the guy a break. He needs to find balance between the two, not to just automatically give up his lifelong desired career and then be made to feel hugely guilty about it because he wants to be an artist.

If I were Virginia and the rest of the Whiner Family, I would be more giving of myself to others' needs, not be as self centered as the characters in this book appear to be. I would want happiness for others, true, unselfish happiness for THEM. That sometimes means letting your family go, not insisting that they be constantly at your side and giving up any semblence of a real life of their own.

At least this book could have been interesting to make up for the shallowness of the characters. But, after about the first four pages, it couldn't even be that.

UGH. What a waste of my time and money.

4 out of 5 stars Like a well woven quilt, Aprons on a Clothesline is a book to be remembered........2007-06-05

Rich characters with depth and emotion fill the pages of this tender and well crafted novel. You will be able to see the rural Minnesota you might never have visited through DePree's eyes.
Her characters are full of surprises and her story has its own rhythm and depth. Virginia Morgan is someone you will learn to care for and respect; she is a woman of sacrifices and good intentions who is torn by the devastating and frustrating results of her stroke. She will have to learn to walk again and to speak again and she will win the battle again and again making life changing choices as she goes along and falling in love once again after her beloved husband's death.
A touching story with heartfelt and deeply human characters. You will love it if you love a deep and moving read.

5 out of 5 stars Traci Depree -what a talent.......2007-01-04

I can get lost in the books she writes! -thank you Traci!

5 out of 5 stars Comforting and encouraging.......2006-06-01

One of the best terms for Traci's books is "comforting." Written with a readable style, her rural setting and familiar characters offer readers an oasis from the stress of everyday life. You may also want to read Can of Peas by Traci and, if you care for short Christian fiction, I would recommend Cool Water for the Thirsting Soul by Kenny Paul Clarkson.

          4 out of 5 stars Comforting!.......2006-02-13

If you have read Can of Peas and Dandelions in a Jelly Jar, then you know that you'll be in comforting and easy reading with this one. If you have not read any of DePree's other works, then I would suggest that you start with Can of Peas so you won't miss out on the background of this one!

This book deals with Virginia, Peter Morgan's grandmother. Virginia has always been the strong person, the one everyone leans on for comfort and strength when things go wrong. She is the one who offers a ready smile and a helping hand. She is the grandmotherly type who will bake cookies for you and ask you to sit at the table and tell her all about your problems. Then one day, she has a stroke and finds herself at the receiving end of getting the help. The problem is, she does not like being dependent on others.

The book also focuses on Mae and Peter Morgan as they welcomed their newest child, Trudy and Bert as they deal with inlaw issues and being newly married themselves. Jessie is still there but the spotlight is not on her as much this time. She still struggles with wanting a mother. David Morgan, Peter's father, Virgina's son, is also in this book but not nearly as much as he was in the last book. There are a couple of new characters introduced into this book. But the focus is on Virginia.

As always, DePree writes of her Lake Emily characters with a deft brush ~~ but like her last book, there just isn't enough character development to make me say WOW! It's more of a tease ~~ she writes then makes me want to know more.

But as for comforting reading goes, this one is definitely a good one. So pull up a chair and a cup of hot tea and enjoy an afternoon reading about the Lake Emily residents.

          5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2006-07-27

"The simple act of picking clean, wet clothes out of a wicker basket, shaking them out, and hanging them up makes me slow down, giving me time to compose the rest of my day."

Washing machines are great for convenience, but there is a magical quality to hand washing clothes with a delicious essential oil soap (orange or lavender) and hanging them outside to dry. Of course, this means you need a clothesline and a secluded back yard.

As a child we used a soap called Sunlight and washed clothes in a ring washer. I know, I'm too young to know about ring washers, but in Africa that is what we used and we even had a sink with a washboard type surface.

The spinning umbrella clothesline was behind the house with a mountain right behind where animals could easily find their way down to our house. Often while putting up clothes, I'd walk up the steps and scare a baboon who would screech at me for interrupting the stealing of fruit. I'm not sure who scared who more, but clothes definitely ended up thrown about the garden as I ran one way and the baboon ran the other.

Memories of running outside to quickly take down the clothes in the afternoon is also a fun memory. As the rain would start to soak the clothes and sheets, we'd frantically be pulling them off the line, then hanging them inside to dry overnight.

With memories of hanging out clothes on a line, this book becomes even more meaningful. If you have a penchant for lavender ironing water and verbena soap, this will also be a delight.

This unique book has recipes for making your own soap with herbs, describes the variety of clotheslines, shows pictures of many different clothespin bags and explains how to wash linens. How do you make a new clothesline last longer? Why use a naturally scented softener?

Throughout this informative and very practical guide there are also moments of inspiration for designing your own laundry room. The storage of linens with small herbal sachets is followed by recipes and creative ideas. A special section shows how clotheslines found their way into art. Urban clotheslines and country clotheslines are included. Remember clothespin toys? They have pictures of those too.

"I know this sounds funny, but I think of hanging clothes as an almost religious experience." ~Betsy Bennett, artist (Sheets to the Wind II painting)

Now and then I just wish I could take my laundry down to the river and wash it on stones. I have strange notions, but mostly they appeal to my outdoor nature. By washing our clothes inside, we miss out on the feeling of the sun on our skin and the sound of clothes whipping about in the wind. While at my mother's house one day I found two clothespins and decided to keep them. My mother and grandmother always had clotheslines and I remember many happy hours as a child running through the sheets warmed by the sun.

          ~The Rebecca Review

          5 out of 5 stars A little treasure.......2005-04-12

This is a real glimpse of another era, but one not so intangible as we might think....we can definitely enjoy it, too. Some of the sweetest things in life are the simplest pleasures, and a sniff of our bedsheets after drying in the sun, or drying off with a towel that did the same is a perfect example. Since our olfactory sense is the one most tied to memories, this book would be a great one for those new to housekeeping or new mothers. I can remember running through the sheets on my mother's clothesline, smelling my clean clothes as we brought them in and folded them. I do the same for my family when I have the time, and my 78 year-old mother recently expressed a desire to start hanging out her wash again. So since April 19th (yes, it's a Monday--traditional washday for years and years and years in our country) is National Hang Out Your Wash Day; I got the book for my mom and will pair it with a clothesline and clothespins. It's a wonderful little book, and even has a recipe for lye soap that we used to make as kids. It was pretty gross but those farm women were strong and even though I'll bet it took the skin right off their hands, they used it. We could learn a thing or two from them, I'm sure.

          5 out of 5 stars Very fun.......2004-05-15

I like books full of nostalgia and simpler ideas. Like the other reviewers I found it a good walk through memory lane. We never had a clothesline since we grew up in the city, but I remember seeing them on movies and the like. Its definitly a piece of Americana. I picked this up mainly because of the stress of the current war on terrorism, I needed something simple and nice. This made me feel some more trust and confidence in our values and the core of what is America. I really needed a break from all the crud books coming out on politics from former hippies trying to make a buck (sorry Mr. Bob Woodward). I like knowing that at our heart America is the home of the free, brave, and simple folks doing normal things. Thanks for an easy, stress free, good book.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, creative, original and nostalgic.......2004-05-15

I guess I hadn't thought about it till I read this book, but the simple act of doing the laundry can generate an almost Zen like satisfaction. We wash our clothes almost every week, and it seems like a chore... or is it? Take a walk back in time and even through today and look at the way we do wash and how. This book brought back the smells I remember of my Mother over the enamelled steel tub rinsing and scrubbing. Me and my sisters had endless fun running between the sheets and clothes hung from the seemingly endless lines of drying laundry in our back yard playing hide and go seek. For any of you who remember when simple pleasures were derived from simple tasks, and satisfaction from a job well done wasn't pushing a button on a TV remote you ought to give this a read.

          5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2004-05-15

Really wonderful. I love from the heart writing. There truly is something about the way the books feel. It flows together, it was magical and captivating. I would recommend this book to anyone esp. those who remember a simpler time of your mothers washing and the easy, carefree joy of fresh smelling linen. Endless fun to share with your son or daughter, and the pictures jump from the page. Looking forward to more from this author.

            Book Description

Whether we are fashion forward or oblivious to trends, clothing is our universal means of self-expression. Far from frivolous, clothing has served as much more than mere covering. Artists and writers throughout history have found inspiration in all kinds of garments, turning to everyday items like dresses and shoes to express the deeper emotions attached to them. With the same engaging concept he applied to Home, Stan Tymorek mixes and matches poems about clothing with paintings and photographs in an anthology that offers a fresh perspective on what we wear.

By juxtaposing 50 poems and images from different places and times, Tymorek provides couplings that are at once provocative, poignant, thoughtful, and funny. An Edward Steichen photograph from Vogue modernizes an Elizabethan sonnet. Max Ernst and Elizabeth Bishop question the notions of gender contained in a hat. Jim Dine and John Updike jointly consider the strictures of the suit. Among the featured poets and artists are Robert Creeley, Dorothy Parker, Calvin Trillin, Sonia Delaunay, Gustav Klimt, and Andy Warhol.

5 out of 5 stars Good Lighting Techniques.......2007-08-02

Stephen Dantzig's Softbox Lighting Techniques will make a valuable addition to any working pro's technical library. Of key interest are the sections on how varying surfaces and size, as well as reflectivity of the individual softboxes or their components can drastically affect the quality and volume of the light. Dantzig has done his research and used excellent photographs to illustrate his points.

2 out of 5 stars Not for natural light photographers.......2006-11-06

This is not a good choice if you want to use only natural light, like I do. The autor uses strobes to modify the lighting. I didn't like his work either.

                          1 out of 5 stars Not good.......2006-10-13

I'm not sure if I was reading the same book as the other reviewers because I can't understand how they could give it five stars. I couldn't get past the fact that all of the pictures were boring, poorly composed, amateurish in quality, and all set in the same environment. I usually don't return books, but I returned this one right away. Do yourself a favor and check out Bryan Peterson's "Photographing People - Beyond Portraiture" if you are looking for a first class book that is leagues beyond this offering. If you are looking for a book that contains the same kind of diagrams as this book does, then check out "Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers" by Christopher Grey. Yes, it's specific to studio portraits, but the concepts of lighting are the same. Indoors or outdoors, all photographers are ultimately trying to shape and model light. Some tools are better suited to the studio and others outdoors, but the concept of direction, tone, composition, and modifiers are essentially the same.

                          Master Lighting Techniques
                          Stephen A. Dantzig

Stephen Dantzig wrote one of the definitive books on studio lighting, "Lighting Techniques for Fashion and Glamour Photography" back in 2005. Now he takes his considerable educational and writing talents and tackles the specific lighting needs of outdoor and location photographers.

Reading a Stephen Dantzig book on photographic lighting is a pleasure to be savored slowly. There is so much to learn and so many thought provoking views on the subject that it's a crime to rush though the book. The man knows his subject and tackles it in an unconventional and effective way.

Just as he did in his book, "Lighting Techniques for Fashion and Glamour Photography" Dantzig challenges the reader right from the beginning. There is no waste or filler in his books. He discusses different lighting needs for portrait photographers vs. beauty and fashion photographers. He explains why shooting digital is more akin to shooting chrome than film, and the implications on more precise lighting measurements.

Most photographic authors show portfolio grade images exclusively. However in this book Dantzig shows successful as well as lighting failure examples... then he dissects the failures. The reader often learns more from the `failure' examples than from the typical successful images. This is a very effective technique that more photographic authors should use.

As is typical with Danzig's books are the excellent image diagrams they help the user to visualize the shooting conditions. Not just the placement of strobe lights, but the location and condition of the sun. Another thing I like about Danzig's book is the way that he masterfully blends camera / lighting techniques with Photoshop techniques, helping the reader all along the way, not an easy thing to do.

With "Master Lighting Techniques" Danzig delivers the best photographic book of 2006, just as he did last year with "Lighting Techniques for Fashion and Glamour Photography".

Put it this way, if I were to teach a college level class on photographic lighting, Danzig's two books would be the required texts.

                          They're that good.

                          5 out of 5 stars Practical in-the-field advice.......2006-07-31

I must admit I'm more interested in practical advice and techniques I can use right away than theoretical background, and this book has both. I was surprised to discover that the nuts-and-bolts of lighting did help me do a better job of shooting portraits outdoors and on location. Because portrait photography is so much about the lighting, this is a good general portrait photography book, too. Recommended.

                          Book Description

Shattering the notion that location lighting has to be difficult, inconvenient, or compromised in its quality, this resource provides guidance on how to create unique and personalized images shot in parks, on city streets, at sports arenas, in workplaces, or in a client’s home. With an overview of equipment and a discussion on the essential tools for a shoot, this guide walks photographers through the creation of dozens of location images—from casual headshots to full-length, formally posed portraits. With strategies for meeting lighting challenges found outside of the studio—from evaluating existing light to modifying or supplementing light as needed—this book will help photographers shoot confidently by developing a plan for creating professional-quality location portraits.

4 out of 5 stars SEEING THE LIGHT.......2007-09-20

Being that flying is what it is, I find myself doing more reading and less traveling for educational meetings. The first thing I liked about this book is that it is all Jeff Smith and not a compilation of many authors saying " Well, I do it this way". Within a very few pages, I realized that this is a true gem of a book. I found Jeff Smith challenging concepts that many of us as photographers have been accepting for years. What is more important is that he is correct. In one example, he inquires if we would use on camera flash in the studio. Of course not we think and then he asks.....then why would you do that outdoors? The theme of the book is how to get PROFESSIONAL pictures in location photography be it indoors or out and I think he accomplishes that admirably. He not only explains why he does certain things but why we do it as image makers either consciously or unconsciously.
There are many facts without a lot of verbiage and although in my compulsive manner, I like to highlight as I read, I found I was highlighting practically everything. Yes, a few of the comments could have been explained better but after more reading you figure out where he is taking you. An excellent, well thought out book that will unquestionably give you pearls to walk away with and whets my appetite for more of his books and thoughts.

A good book on the subject, but not very detailed on specific camera settings and other tips; therefore it's not for everybody.
