Book Description
This volume contains a collection of the key essays on and by Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), one of the most influential and prolific architects of the 20th century. The individual essays focus on specific aspects of Wright's work, analyzing buildings and projects in order to explain the general principles of Wright's much-debated design methods. Included are previously published contributions from well-known historians and Wright scholars such as Kenneth Frampton, Colin Rowe, and Gwendolyn Wright, as well as new commentary from the book's editor, Robert McCarter, an acknowledged Wright expert and author of Phaidon's Frank Lloyd Wright monograph. Overall, this volume brings together in one place decades of important scholarship on key architectural principles, making it an essential reader for students of architecture.

excellent resource.......2007-03-26
I loved this book. I am a beginner and it was an excellent resource.
Important for beginners........2005-08-04
I am a novice artist and need all the tips and help I can get. This book is a big help and I refer to it frequently.
Don't let the title fool you.......2004-04-22
This book provides a tremendous amount of information on sketching in nature but don't let the title fool you- this is a terrific general sketching and drawing book. Johnson covers topics that are rarely covered in other books. The use of pens, watercolors, pencils and colored pencils (both water soluble and not) are covered. This is an invaluable book and is an asset to both the beginner and more advanced student. I'm on Amazon right now trying to find other books by Cathy Johnson- I'm that impressed.
Cathy keeps it simple...and affordable........2001-08-30
This is a very refreshing book. Cathy Johnson not only makes it look easy to draw and paint loose, yet accurate, watercolor sketches outdoors, but she tells you everything you need to know. This book will actually teach you how to draw and paint what you see, without making things overly complicated. Best of all, her supply list is well within the means of most people. I really enjoyed this book, and learned a great deal from it. This summer, I caught Lyme disease. It's nasty. For months, I could hardly walk, let alone hike and garden and do stuff I used to love. But Cathy's book has helped draw me back outside, and I'm learning to love nature all over again, one leaf, flower, and bug at a time. This book would make a great gift.
Fine for the Arteest on the Go.......2000-04-14
This is a pretty complete little volume. When you get it, you really do have to assume some knowledge and practice of making art and the media, however, she goes over materials and techniques, which can serve as a good refresher or initial exposure.
The best part is a discussion early on about how to pack all the materials so you don't keel over from exhaustion, hauling too much art gear, along with the usual standard hiking goodies. (I especially needed help with that, given my childlike adoration of way too many pretty colors.)
The emphasis is on SKETCHING, not doing the Mona Lisa. This is important in outdoor work as light changes and speed can be of the essence. I sometimes pick up this book so that I can just relax my techniques a bit.
The examples in the book, in many media and in monochrome or color are a delight to view. Sometimes, it's just fun to sit down with a cuppa and flip through the nice drawings of objects and scenes in nature.
Book Description
Plein air painting is the art of painting out-of-doors, on site, and completing the work at one sitting. This approach became famous with the advent of Impressionism in France in the 1870s. Light in atmosphere was the obsession of the early Impressionists, and their work, with its broad, quickly applied brush strokes and its fearless use of color, had and still has the power to astonish. Cathy Johnson has written a guide to this kind of painting for beginners and accomplished artists who use watercolor, acrylic, or oil. It is a celebration of the experience of making art, a primer on technique, and a call to see the great outdoors.

Inspiration to See Nature in a Fresh Way.......2000-05-03
Here's a great book for painting out of doors. The author, Cathy Johnson, includes information for beginners in a simple, concise manner with an introduction to various media, their use, strengths, and limitations. Suggestions for initial supplies is a very helpful feature. Simple and clear colored pictures illustrate techniques. Included is an excellent bibliography as well as a list of organized painting trips, both domestic and foreign.
The author's wide range of ideas for subject matter in landscape, trees, flowers, birds, butterflies, turtles, frogs and all kinds of small furry fauna is an inspiration to both beginners and experienced painters to get out their brushes and CREATE! Her ideas of simplifying distant landscapes or of taking a close view of a single flower, rock, or tree root will bring fresh ideas to try.
Having worked in the art discipline of a liberal arts college library for many years and currently painting and continuing to study books on painting, I recommend "Painting in Nature" with great enthusiasm.

Looking for a creative addition to your traditional wedding offerings? Wedding photojournalism has become increasingly popular in the past five years and is a highly marketable and profitable style. Andy Marcus, president of New York City s respected Fred Marcus Photography, teaches you how to capture visually compelling, black-and-white images that convey the romance, excitement and emotions of the wedding day by concentrating on the fascinating details, spontaneous gestures and behind-the-scenes events as they happen. Practical matters are discussed, such as scheduling your shoot to maximize opportunities, how to handle both the traditional and photojournalism styles simultaneously, and marketing wedding photojournalism to your clients. While it may not be for every one of your clients, wedding photojournalism gives you the opportunity to sell two albums instead of one!
Customer Reviews:
Unique B & W wedding photography.......2001-01-25
After reading his book, and, I myself, doing both traditional and photojournalistic weddings, cannot in my heart-n-soul recommend this book as a learning tool for newcomers to the photojournalistic style of weddings. Although his images are quite beautiful, anyone that shoots 15-20 rolls of film should be able to come up with a 120 page book to show for it. He covered lighting, film, lense size, and appeture, but he missed on one important part, which is shutter speed. But I got it from the library, so what do I care.
Disappointing.......2000-11-15
My girlfriend and I were looking for examples of candid, story-telling, photojournalistic style photos for our wedding. However, this book was a total waste of money. The photos are poorly done and fail to inspire any interest in the events they capture. Needless to say, this book gave us great ideas for the type of photos we DON'T want.
I don't know what alternative book to recommend, but if you do, please let me know :)
Fabulous.......2000-08-06
This book tells it as it ought to be. A great book, especially for those photographers who already provide good quality photography to their brides and want to add another dimension. We should all develop the skills to offer our brides what THEY want, not what we THINK they ought to have. This book can definitely help.
Very helpful.......2000-07-13
This book is great for a young photographer starting out in the business. Many great ideas and stories from one of the truly great wedding photographers in the country. His thoughts regarding pricing and proper equipment and film selection. Some of the reviews below sound like jealous diatribes from Andy's competitors in New York and elsewhere. They should be jealous...they wish they could do what he has done! Look at the book and make your own judgement.
Shameful.......2000-03-23
I find it funny that a studio who has shot nothing but fixed, set up portraits for years has the nerve to write a book on "photojournalism". Marcus studio does a fine job with traditional wedding photography, they should not however even discuss photojournalism. I don't recommend this book.

Shonen Jump Series 1 Books.......2007-01-04
This was a gift for our son for Christmas! It was great he has read most all of them and now wants most of the series.
Shonen Jump Manga Magic.......2005-11-09
This is easily the best collection of Americanized manga out. As most know, Shonen Jump was at one time a Japanese exclusive magazine that made its hop across the Pacific in 2003 for American fans to enjoy. Since that moment, it's become the best in manga and now contains a majority of the manga juggernauts.
This collection is a great start for those of you who are interested in reading manga, or for those of you who missed out on some of the earlier issues of Shonen Jump and want to catch up on what's going on. It also has the beginnings to the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z mangas, which can't be found in Shonen Jump.
Below is a listing of the manga in this box, as well as a small description of each:
(1) Dragon Ball: This is the start of the Dragon Ball world. It explains the origins of Goku and his relationship with the Dragon Balls.
(2) Dragon Ball Z: The beginning of one of the greatest animes ever in its purest form. Unpolluted with minutes-long shouting and infested with excellent action and story, this details the story of Goku as a father and a husband, as well as following some of the other favorites of the Dragon Ball world.
(3) Naruto: Probably the best in Shonen Jump, Naruto is a tale of a boy fox-demon who wants nothing more than to earn his place in the world, and does so by training to become a ninja, despite the mistrust directed at him by some of his teacher and the hatred he receives from his fellow students.
(4) One Piece: A boy eats the mysterious Devil Fruit at a young age, making his body into rubber and also cursing his body: should he ever fall into water, he would sink instantly to the bottom. Despite that, he wants nothing more than to be the pirate king of a world of oceans.
(5) Shaman King: Yoh, a boy who can not only see ghosts but control them, comes to Tokyo to train to become a powerful shaman in the hopes that one day he'll win the title of Shaman King.
(6) Yu-Gi-Oh!: A story of constant morals and themes, it details a young, pint-sized, pointy-haired boy's struggles with a mysterious puzzle/necklace that grants him dark super powers as well as an alter-ego.
(7) YuYu Hakusho: A juvenile delinquent dies saving a child and finds out that his next was entirely unexpected and therefore gains a chance to come back to life. What he later finds out is coming back to life also makes him a spirit detective.

This pack is totaly awsome! If your obsessed about anime than this is the thing for you! I collect and read Shonen Jump magazine, and I kept getting curious about how all the stories had started. So I got this and it answered all my questions.

I think that this is one of the best manga/anime comics that I have ever read.

Well Translated.......2005-04-12
Akira Toriyama's epic, which is currently enjoying great popularity on the Cartoon Network, is now available in English in its original manga form-reading in "reverse" order. After years of training and adventure, Son Goku has become the world's greatest martial artist. He will face off against all sorts of devious and powerful aliens and villains and all around bad-guys. The fight over the fate of the globe has never been so precarious-and so much fun.
Son Goku is the greatest hero on Earth. Several years after defeating the arch-villain Piccolo, he is now married and has a child. At this point, a visitor from outer space arrives with the news that Goku himself is an alien, and that he is Goku's brother. When the visitor turns out to be a killer, Goku's only choice is to fight his fierce brother to save himself, his family and the entire human race. A wild plot twist at the end may be the only chance for success.
Dragonball Z, graphic novel #1.......2003-05-07
Dragonball Z graphic novel #1, is #17 in the 42-volume series known as Dragonball. The first 16 of these graphic novels are called Dragonball, and deal with the adventures of young Goku. The story of Dragonball Z(DBZ) begins five years after Dragonball ends.
A mysterious alien comes to Earth, known as Raditz, and he brings surprising news: Goku is a saiyan, a warrior alien race that was nearly extinct, and Goku is Raditz's younger brother. No later than this does Raditz take Goku's 4 year-old son, Gohan, and demand that Goku join him in helping with the destruction of the planet. When hope seems lost, a strange alliance is forged. Piccolo, Goku's archenemy, joins forces with Goku, and together they go up against the powerful killer Raditz, which leads to a fight that will never be forgotten.
I had always been a fan of the original Dragonball comics, and wasn't too sure about DBZ. I purchased DBZ #1 just to see what it was like... immediately, I was hooked. DBZ is darker and more serious than the often goofy Dragonball, but still has playful, comedic moments, and strong-personality characters that you will love. The fight scenes are easy to follow, but remain very intense.
All the Dragonball and DBZ graphic novels are printed right to left. Reading it in the opposite direction can be confusing, but I got the hang of it really quick--so don't let that put you off.
For fans of the show, a much deeper and interesting story awaits. These comics were the original; what the show was based on. Nothing is left out, and the dialogue is translated directly from the original Japanese. However, unlike the kid-friendly show, there are some elements which may not be completely appropriate for young children(You be the judge).
I recommend this graphic novel to anyone who likes comics or anime. It has a great story, funny moments, awesome fights and more. I definitely think that if you showed enough interest to view this page, you would like it. Buy it.
Dragonball #17, My Review.......2003-03-10
This book is sooo cool! I have it and it just cool! It starts where Dragonball ends, and continues the 42 volume Dragonball saga as DBZ #1! Goku is grown up in this one ( wahh! No more cute little monkey! ) Raditz comes and kidnaps Gohan and athen Piccolo Daimao ( Piccolo the great demon king ) teams up with Goku to fight Raditz. This book is for anone who loves 100 page sparring sessions. The drawings are great and I can't complain. The only thing is it kind of gets more boring as you get into the fight. If you like this, you should obtain a copy of Shonen Jump the magazine that publishes DBZ. Hope this has convinced you!
For an Older Audience- DBZ.......2002-08-23
I have to admit that my first impulse from seeing the show on Cartoon Network is the same: This is not a kids' book, or show, but should be viewed by a more mature audience. It doesn't bug me much though. More for people like me.
The art work is completely different from the normal American art. This can most easily be shown by the angles that Toriyama uses to get his message across. Japanese angles of sight in artwork have long been inspirational to Western artists, and I think that cartoons are no different. Also, Toriyama is much more interested in the simple beauty of a line and uses it over using tons of clutter in the pictures. Always a plus from my boat. The dialogue, again a reason for older kids, contains quite a few swearwords. Doesn't bug me, but parents might want to edit this one for a few years efore they let the kids have it.
I love the original format, but it makes reading other comicbooks difficult after reading this! I want to go right to left in them too!
Definitely one of my favorites so far.
Funimations worst nightmare...A good translation!.......2002-07-22
In Japan the comic came before the show, so this isn't cheap mechantdice. In fact, it's way better than the show, even though the plot is exactly the same. Why? Becuase the translation is not cut, it still has sex jokes and blood, plus the words are much smoother. The charcters talk like normal people, and each has the own speech style. Piccolo talks like a king, while goku is kinda hick. And compare translations.
This is a real scene from teh DBZ Freiza Saga:
Funimation Dubbing:
Vegeta: What is that THING?
Gohan: A watch
Vegeta: Mighty clunky to be a watch
Viz on the other hand translates much more smoothly with each
character having there own way of talking.
(Piccolo and Vegeta both sound royal, while Goku is a little hick)
Viz manga translation:
Vegeta: What's that in your hand, WHELP!?
Gohan: It's a wattcch, sir.
Vegeta: Heh...Earthlings! Just smart enough to find their way across
space...but not smart enough to make a watch smaller than that!

Very funny.......2004-04-11
Dragonball is a great manga! It's about a monkey tailed mountain boy named Goku who meets a girl by the name of Bulma who is searching for the the seven mystical "Dragonballs" which when all gathered together, will grant the posseser any wish.Seeing how strong Goku is,she convinces him to join him.The art is very humorous and so are the characters(especially Goku).A word of caution however.I do not recomend this to young children seeing as how there is some nudity and potty humor in it.Still though,it has great humor and art and I reccomend it to anyone, espcially to those who like adventure.
Quality story, writing, and art.......2004-01-08
I'm going to start it off by saying this: Don't buy this because you watched and liked the Dragonball/DBZ episodes you saw on Cartoon Network. Instead buy it because Toriyama's art and writing are great. It's a solid retelling of the myth of the monkey king, Goku, and his journey to please the great dragon Shenlong, with some changes and comedy thrown in. The fluid art keeps one reading, despite the unfamiliarity with the format (the book and its panels all go from right to left).
I suggest picking this up. Get this manga, then get the others. They blow the anime out of the water if you can read, and if you can't, then just look at the pictures, because those are good too.

I had a very claer understanding of the story, but it contained some rather explicit sexual humor. I wasn't surprised that... wait gotta go. Lupin III is on...
