Rather than merely package this traditional institution in a new way, OMA has completely reinvented it, transforming it wholeheartedly into a site able to aggressively orchestrate the coexistence of all available technologies for collecting, condensing, distributing, reading, and manipulating information. The library will no longer be loyal to the book... In more architectural terms, the $156 million building has an angular, meshlike glass and metal skin that surrounds a series of floating public spaces: a kid's area at the bottom; a living room for browsing, public meeting areas, and a coffee shop; a mixing chamber where patrons can work intensively with librarians; and a reading room at the top with views of Mount Rainier and Puget Sound. In between these platforms are a series of programmatic boxes containing the more stable, or fixed, parts of the library program, including a continuous four-story book spiral where the entirety of the library's books will be stored. This third book in Actar's series of Verb monographs reveals how the Seattle Public Library works, and examines it in terms of new media technologies that have changed the status of the library in the contemporary city from a traditional repository for books to an iinformation store.i Also included is a comprehensive account of the design process, from initial concept through construction to ribbon cutting.

Fantastic book on one of the worlds leading comtemporary buildings. All Architectural offices should follow the lead of OMA in publishing literature on all significant contemporary architecture so the public can get an understanding about why their public buildings are the way they are.

Creative and Informative.......2004-07-28

I like this book most because it provides a wide variety of creative projects. The techniques also can transfer to mediums other than fabric. The one drawback is that some projects have better descriptions and instructions than others. The author provides a good description of the tools and materials necessary to do fabric stamping at the begining of the book, but the book does not give instructions for some steps that more experienced crafters might already know. Despite this drawback, I found the book to be inspiring. So, overall I think it is a good book, but those readers who are beginners might want to start with another book and come back to this one.

Terrific empirically supported self-help text.......2003-09-06

This is the best treatment manual I've seen for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It presents a scientifically sound cognitive-behavioral therapy protocol in user-friendly language. Individuals with GAD can either work through it on their own or with a therapist. The Therapist Manual is excellent, too; I highly recommend both.

This book was absolutely terrible. I purchased it with high hopes, but instead I threw it away. I couldn't have the heart to sell it used to someone else, because one person should only get burned buying this book.

If you have ever had any anxiety issues, this book can help!.......2005-05-26

This is not a large book on how to ovecome your anxiety issues, but it gets right to the point. I read it in one day and used the principles it suggested and I actually overcame a specific phobia in one afternoon. I had, for no known reason, developed an anxiety reaction to driving on one particular highway in my city. It was a busy, 5 lane route with a speed limit of 70 mph. with an average speed of 80 mph for most drivers. Every time I used that highway, I experienced an anxiety reaction that could be classified as a panic attack. It was intolerable. I suffered for weeks until I got this book and read it the first day. I used the coping methods suggested and it worked for me. I now drive that route at least once a week and on the rare occasion that I get anxious, I tell myself that "I feel nothing, this is uncomfortable, but many things in my life are uncomfortable and I can handle this" and I get where I have to go without incident. Read this book and use it, it can be very helpful, if not a cure! Who knew something as simple as wearing a rubber band on my left wrist and tweaking it whenever anxiety became an issue could actually revise a panic situation. It works!

Very good introduction to the Zone System of photographic previsualization. This book and the Fred Picker book are the best introductions to the Zone System for someone who wants to pick up and start using the Zone System to immediately improve their photographic results. Of course the Ansel Adams series would be the next step for someone wnating a deeper understanding of the Zone System.

False Legacy.......2007-02-12

I have to warn Phantom fans away from this one. Raab's writing is tedious and wearing. In order to mimic old English writing, he simply went for awkward syntax that made reading this poorly conceived tale a true chore. Raab also re-writes the true origin of the Phantom so that the Phantom does not create any of his signature icons himself, but simply flounders into a ready made situation. This is a truly forgettable effort...hopefully.

An interesting surprise.......2006-05-20

I'll admit I was a bit disappointed when I opened THE PHANTOM: LEGACY and found that it was not a standard comic, but rather a short story with accompanying illustrations. I had been hoping for something more in the form of the early Lee Falk strips, in this case telling the origin of the first Phantom. After settling into the story, my disappointment was relieved - THE PHANTOM: LEGACY is a neat little story, and definitely worth the time of any Phantom fan. What's more, the creators get kudos for their presentation of the material. Writer Ben Raab gives us a story that is modeled after the adventure tales of Daniel Defoe, Robert Louis Stevenson, or even Edgar Rice Burroughs. The text is in a longhand font that looks as if it were written with a quill pen. Artists Pat Quinn and Art Lyon Provide full and half-page ink illustrations that resemble woodcuts. This is all printed on a background that resembles aged paper, with the occasional blotches, marks, and fingerprints that would be expected on a document from the 16th century. It definitely adds a touch of realism to the story of Christopher Standish, aka "Kit Walker", and his transformation from a shipwrecked youth in Africa to the legendary Ghost Who Walks.

A Rip Off........2006-05-17

To say that I was disapointed with this book, would be a major understatement. If I had not ordered the book ahead of time, I would have left it at the store. It's attrocious. First of all be warned, it's not a graphic novel (ie.an extended story with sequential art). It's more of a large formated novel with pictures. And not very nice pictures. And the font is very hard to read.

And the writing, never mind the fact that Raab is a lousy writer. The writing is in some pseudo 16th century literature (heck I don't even think it goes back that far) that's almost indecipherable. Here's a sample:

'Pon the docks was I reared. In the shadow of the merchant ships. Their tall sails a'billowing in the breeze, do I count among my earliest recollections. Oh the majesty! O the mystery! Oh, what strange and exhilarating sights their gallant crowns must have beheld! Oh what grand adventures!'

And that's how the rest of the 96 page book reads.

Unless you're a Phatom Phreak and want it for your collection. I wouldn't shell out money on this.
