From 1957 to 1972, the artistic and political movement known as the Situationist International (SI) worked aggressively to subvert the conservative ideology of the Western world. The movement's broadside attack on "establishment" institutions and values left its mark upon the libertarian left, the counterculture, the revolutionary events of 1968, and more recent phenomena from punk to postmodernism. In this book Simon Sadler investigates the artistic, architectural, and cultural theories that were once the foundations of Situationist thought, particularly as they applied to the form of the modern city.
Simon Sadler searches for the Situationist City among the detritus of tracts, manifestoes, and works of art that the SI left behind. The book is divided into three parts. The first, "The Naked City," outlines the Situationist critique of the urban environment as it then existed. The second, "Formulary for a New Urbanism," examines Situationist principles for the city and for city living. The third, "A New Babylon," describes actual designs proposed for the Situationist City.

You could hardly find a greater betrayal of the Situationist movement in all of its aspects, than this book, which translates a chaotic, exciting and iconoclastic movement into a boring and platitudinous addition to the obligatory academic discourse about everything.
Throw this thing in the trash, don't even resell it, certainly don't donate it to any charities or libraries. Go right now instead and find "The Situationist International: A User's Guide" by Simon Ford, you won't regret it. I swear to God I am not lying and I have no institutional or other affiliation that would conflict with this judgment.

I can't say I enjoyed this at all. Unles you're heavily into aesthetics and understand most of the avante-garde terms, you're not going to make any sense of this. The book was overly pretentious and I couldn't burden myself to finish it. It's not at all what you'd expect, and the synopsis is misleading.
Get the book Guy Debord and the Situationist International instead. Guy Debord was part of the Lettrist International, which founded alot of the psycho-geographical ideas. I guarantee it'll be a more interesting read than this.
Longing for the ludic.......1999-12-30
An excellent book, within the constraints the author sets for himself, to deal primarily with what could ahistorically, but reasonably be called "situationist" architecture and architectural theory. There is no doubt the book makes bored, sensitive fellows like myself want to go out and do something to keep these insane transformational ideas alive and working in culture. I'd love to have a list of all the other bored people, we could have a big party.

Dutch artist Constant Nieuwenhuys (b. 1920) developed his visionary architectural project New Babylon between 1956 and 1974. Emerging out of the remarkable activist group the Situationist International, the project was concerned with issues of "unitary urbanism" and the future of art in a technocratic society. It has had a major impact on subsequent generations of artists, architects, and urbanists. Exploring the intersection of drawing, utopianism, and activism in a multimedia era, The Activist Drawing not only traces this historical moment but reveals surprisingly contemporary issues about the relationship between a fully automated environment and human creativity.
Several decades before the current debate about architecture in the supposedly placeless electronic age, Constant conceived an urban and architectural model that literally envisaged the World Wide Web. The inhabitants of his New Babylon drift through huge labyrinthine interiors, perpetually reconstructing every aspect of the environment according to their latest desires. Walls, floors, lighting, sound, color, texture, and smell keep changing. This network of vast "sectors" can be seen as a physical embodiment of the Internet, where people configure their individual Web sites and wander from site to site without limits. With its parallels to our virtual world, New Babylon seems as radical today as when it was created.
The essays explore the relevance of Constant's utopian work to that of his peers in the Situationist International and experimental architectural movements of the 1960s, as well as later generations of architects and artists. They use Constant's revolutionary project as a springboard to reconsider the role of drawing in an electronic age.

Quite a good book as far as it goes but not as much variety as the others. The colours are not as I would have expected based upon the cartoons on TV.

The book begins with a brief, helpful introduction to the basics of drawing a cartoon head using lines and circles. Turn the page and you will find the entire cast of characters lined up side by side. This page is a handy reference when drawing two or more characters together, because you can easily see everyone's size in relation to each other. From this point on, the book gives step by step instructions for drawing each member of the Hundred Acre Woods. In the margins are helpful hints that point out subtle characteristics that may go unnoticed, but would ruin the picture if drawn wrong; such as the shape of Christopher Robin's eyes, the hair on the back of Rabbit's head, and of course, Eeyore's tail. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys drawing cartoon characters.

I recently bought this book for my middle school sister's birthday and just flipping through it I knew it was perfect. Girls (and boys) need strong female role models, not just celebrities. I am happy that my younger sister can name every player on the Detroit Tigers baseball team but they don't even know the most popular of women athletes such as the Williams sisters. I can't wait to give this gift of current history and inspiration to the strong girl warrior athlete that is my sister.

This book is a fabulous gift for a female of any age. The photographs are both stunning and thought provoking. 100 Sports? Who knew there were so many sports opportunities for women and girls! The handicapped athletes are truly inspirational and the extreme sports are fascinating. I gave this book to my daughter who pored over every page. The quotes from the women really add to the book. I wish there were more inspirational books for girls.

As an animator and one of the biggest Disney fans out there, this big has everything you want to know and need to know about how the Disney animation process is done. This book along with the Art of Disney and The Illusion of Life are a great combo together.
