    Book Description

Paper is generally presumed to be the stock-in-trade of the graphic design profession. However, due to the diverse qualities of paper, and the constant desire of designers to push the boundaries of their profession, its potential is being explored more and more by all disciplines of design.

More Paperwork follows on from Paperwork, which looked at the use of paper in graphic design, and reviews the amazing developments in its application across all areas of design in the last ten years, including product, furniture, fashion and architecture. The interactive features of the first book have also been extended in the second, to create a range of special effects designed to be completed by the reader.

Through the selected work of leading designers around the world, from Amsterdam to Tokyo and New York to Zagreb, this book sets out to demonstrate how the astounding and diverse qualities of paper can be applied. From an inspirational church by Shigeru Ban and a humorous airmail dress by Hussein Chalayan, to an intricate range of packaging by Pentagram and the Honey Pop chair by Tokujin Yoshioka, More Paperwork shows that paper can be used to create functional, exciting and innovative designs.

The book will also include items that are not necessarily chosen for the beauty of their design, but rather because they demonstrate some of the astounding things that paper is capable of: these items still display an intrinsic beauty that will be demonstrated with beautiful photographs.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Look at American folk humor.......1999-09-06

Great fun, and a fascinating look at urban legend and myth. Copiers gave the joke new life, as bits of popular wisdom spread through offices and then around the country. Not unlike the funny-forwards epidemic on today's eMail networks, this book captures the growth of folk humor in a thoroughly enjoyable way! Complete with behavioral annotations that peek just below the laughter. Highly recommended!

                      Book Description

Melanie Hendricks shows how to make inspirational cards for all occasions using this new technique - its name Lacé meaning to interlaced in French. The technique involves making a pattern of cuts using templates. The loose edges are then folded over and tucked under each other using a folding tool to create a distinctive interlacing effect, enhanced by using duo-colour papers. In a series of step-by-step projects Melanie decorates lacé cards using rubber stamps, coloured papers, beads, punch cuts and more.

                      Book Description

With a New Afterword by the Author

Slaughterhouse is the first book of its kind to explore the impact that unprecedented changes in the meatpacking industry over the last twenty-five years—particularly industry consolidation, increased line speeds, and deregulation—have had on workers, animals, and consumers. It is also the first time ever that workers have spoken publicly about what's really taking place behind the closed doors of America's slaughterhouses.

In this new paperback edition, author Gail A. Eisnitz brings the story up to date since the book's original publication. She describes the ongoing efforts by the Humane Farming Association to improve conditions in the meatpacking industry, media exposés that have prompted reforms resulting in multimillion dollar appropriations by Congress to try to enforce federal inspection laws, and a favorable decision by the Supreme Court to block construction of what was slated to be one of the largest hog factory farms in the country. Nonetheless, Eisnitz makes it clear that abuses continue and much work still needs to be done.

5 out of 5 stars All I can say is WOW. I had no idea fresh meat was so filthy........2007-09-29

As others have already stated....I stopped eating meat completely after reading this book. The inhumane treatment of the animals was bad enough. To discover that rotten meat was ground up with fresh meat for baby food was just too much. The unsanitary conditions in these factories is shocking. It makes me wonder when the last time any of the equipment was even hosed off...much less throughly cleaned. Probably never since that would cause the line to stop and they might lose a buck in profit. I first read a book called "Skinny Bitch" and the writer's of that book recommended "Slaughterhouse". I had already toyed with the idea of cutting meat out of my diet. The information in this Slaughterhouse book just confirmed that it was a sound decision. This book shows that the USDA stamp means nothing. I now don't trust anything stamped USDA inspected. It seems that every slaughterhouse has had their own stamp made and has the capacity to stamp thier own meat and the USDA looks the other way. That is truely disturbing. Yep...I'm a non meat eater now. Organic foods are my friends.

4 out of 5 stars Great info in meat (if you eat it), disease, and the pain of the process........2007-06-13

This book is pretty informative. The writer risked her life by exposing daily occurences in slaughterhouses across the country. If you're unaware of how huge the meat and dairy industry is, you will surely become informed after reading this book. It's a very important book to read if you still eat meat and feed it to your children, as e. coli and it's affects on people are described also. Very informative. Some of the book is repetitive, but so are the painful processes in a slaughterhouse as TIME really IS money and "humanity" is a word you check at the door if your working there.

                      5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2007-05-25

A truely great book everyone must read. Whether your a vegetarian, vegan, or meat eater. This book is very well written. It changed my life, thank you Gail for letting us the public know about what is really going on in our slaughterhouses.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for vegans/vegetarians.......2007-04-28

In my mind, much better (and much more shocking) than Fast Food Nation. This book is a must read, and belongs in every animal lover's library.

5 out of 5 stars It made me go vegetarian........2007-03-29

This well researched and documented book is absolutely shocking. Some parts are so graphic I had to skim through them. Even then the result of reading the book is that I will never eat meat again. Eisnitz tells her story presenting the facts as she moves along her narrative. A quick read that will change your life.

                              Book Description

With the adoption of extensive human rights standards and their wide acceptance by States and the international community, the time has come to emphasise the implementation of these standards at both national and international levels. International financial institutions and development agencies have a special role to play in this respect, considering the influence and the resources at their disposal. Increasingly, they are acknowledging this duty, not only as a service to human rights but more so in recognition of the contribution which human rights and democracy, and so by extension good governance and accountability, make to political stability and improved economies. This volume is the result of a Workshop on the Inspection Panel which was organised in Lund by the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and co-sponsored by the World Bank. Its purpose is to look for common ground in areas of mutual interest and to offer a substantive collection of ideas which can prove useful for the future work of the Inspection Panel and similar institutions. Such undertakings must include human rights education and training for the officialdom of national governments and international organisations, as well as for the individuals and groups who stand to benefit from the implementation of the international standards and monitoring exercises, where independent and impartial experts scrutinise the conduct of national and international actors.

From the supplier: The Financial Services Competitiveness and Regulatory Relief Act proposed by House Banking Committee Chair Jim Leach is the solution to confusion over bank sales of insurance. Without the law, the office of the comptroller of the currency will monitor banks' activity in this area very little and the market will start to favor banks. The expansion of bank powers would come in the wake of an interpretation of the National Bank Act's Section 92 in the Barnett Bank case.

                                        Book Description

The glitz, glamour, and lights of Hollywood dazzle the eye, blinding most people to the darker side of showbiz. And yet, that darker side is there, with sleazy producers, organized crime financiers, and performers who will do literally anything to make it big. And when these sorts of people need a little breaking-and-entering done and secrets stolen, they know they can trust the high-priced talent of the mysterious masked man known only as Crossfire. At least, they think they can trust him. What they don't know, what nobody knows, is that the Crossfire costume and contact phone number have fallen into the hands of Jay Endicott, handsome bail bondsman and all-around good guy. "Crossfire" still takes their business, but he works from the inside to protect the innocent. Whether on a brightly-lit movie set or in the dim back alleys of Los Angeles, Crossfire gets caught up in the action, the intrigue, and the underhanded dealings in the TV and movie world.

'80s comics are lately being reprinted by the ton, and I couldn't be happier. Grimjack, Jon Sable, Alien Legion, and other creator-owned series are surfacing from legal limbo and delighting me all over again. Recently, 2 of Mark Evanier's series for Eclipse, DNAgents and Crossfire, have been reprinted in digest-sized black and white editions. I remember DNAgents quite clearly: I didn't like the flimsy stories at all. A spin-off of that series, Crossfire, was a completely different matter. I am happy to have this collection of the first 6 issues, as Evanier's talent for noir-style narrative really shines through. I had forgotten just how good these stories are.

As Crossfire spins out of DNAgents, this collection begins with issue #1 of his own series, introduced by a too-brief recap of the exploits of the original Crossfire, a slippery high-tech industrial spy (if there is any problem with the book, it's that this intro doesn't give enough detail for new readers). After his death, his bailbondsman, Jay Endicott, inherits his personal effects, including the Crossfire uniform and hi-tech gadgets. Rather than dispose of them, Endicott uses them for the opposite purpose: to fight crime. He uses the Crossfire identity to his advantage, getting information from criminal contacts who don't know he's working the other side. Endicott is based in Hollywood, CA, and Evanier successfully uses this setting to give the stories a seedy quality. There is plenty of interaction with the movie/TV worlds, as well as the hopes and broken dreams that accompany them. Frequently, Crossfire finds himself as a sort of guardian angel to a large cast of needy supporting characters who are in over their heads, some of whom bear more than a passing resemblance to actual celebrities. These characters really anchor the stories, and as they don't always have happy endings, they give the stories more gravity.

And let's not forget the impressive work of artist Dan Spiegle. This is fine-line at its best, and it would not be out of place in a classic Warren magazine. It slightly resembles Dave Gibbons with a harder edge. I am very thankful that the series was not reprinted in color, as this really gives Spiegle's work a chance to shine: figures, facial expressions, scenery, action shots... he can do it all, and very well.
