This paperback reprint of a book initially published in 1974 delves into the ideology behind many of Mies van der Rohe's most famous architectural marvels, including the Seagram Building in New York City and the Lake Shore Drive Apartments in Chicago. Van der Rohe, father of the glass and steel modernist skyscraper, affected his field more dramatically than most of his contemporaries. From his earliest years as an apprentice architect in Germany in the first decade of the 20th century, van der Rohe pursued a clear set of ideals about the nature of building. Peter Carter, a student of and later staff architect for van der Rohe, guides readers through his mentor's commitment to structure as the determining factor of form and architecture as an illustration of its civilization. It may seem old hat to today's readers that form follows function, but the notion was very avant-garde during the middle of the century, when van der Rohe was at his height. This copiously illustrated survey of all the major buildings and projects on 192 pages measuring 11.50 x 9.88 inches includes 31 listed projects, several chapters illustrated with additional projects, 400 B&W illustrations, mostly photos, but also technical ones (plans, sections, details, elevations, etc.), 33 pages with educational notes, biographical chronology, etc. A few photos are too big, i.e. do not have enough content for their size, and a few details are too small, simply not legible enough, and inferior to those included in the bilingual "Mies Van der Rohe (Studio Paperback)" by Werner Blaser published under ISBN: 3764356197, though in a smaller format, but with some illustrations more legible.

The Definitive Technical Analysis of Mies's Architecture.......2000-02-18

Peter Carter, who studied under Mies at IIT, wrote this book in the early 70s, shortly after Mies died. It's been long out of print, and I paid dearly to get a copy of the original version, shortly before this rerelease was announced. A lot has happened in architecture since it was written and yet Mies's best work still shines as brightly. For anyone with an interest in Mies in particular, or modern architecture in general, whether as a professional or layman, this is a must-have book.

In its eighty-eight (88) pages, this book packs more information, more feeling and more depth on Mies van der Rohe's classic building than most books three times it size. The text is clear and concise with photographs that grasp the meaning and context of the Seagram Building. This is a "must have" for anyone who appreciates and admires the truly timeless style of van der Rohe.

Early works of van der Rohe.......2000-12-15

A somewhat essential book for the interested student, it lists out what I believe are the great master's early works before the Nazi era ended his days in Europe. Though the texts are brief in description, the black and white photographs screams for hours of close attention and observation, for though unclear they are, eaten by the hunger of time, they offer the reader a different scope about his works. From traditional masonry to steel and glass, the book offers little stand about van der Rohe's lines and designs. It doesnt offer much argument if his steel and glass structures are very much derived from the proportions of the Romans (the conventional school of thought today offer this as the truth), nor does it explain much about his calculated dealings with Hitler's architectural department before he got caught up and subsequently branded a degenerate, nor does it elaborate anything on the communist-related projects he had done before. His later collaborator Ms.Reich does get a brief mention, but as in the rest of this rather thin monograph , everything's brief, but makes a good quick reference into the almost unknown timezones of this 20th century, and perhaps of all time, greatest master architect.

I am a novice wood carver. I took a weekend class in Febuary, which which is the first time that I took up a carving knife. This book is an excellent resource for the beginner. Step by step instructions on two of the projects prepare you for the others that are contained in the book. It is illustrated in color, and has front and side view patterns for each of the projects. My proof that this is a worth five stars? My first carving from one of its patterns is recognizeable.

I really like this book. The layout is nice and the patterns are great. Some are easier to carve than others, as usual. However, some of the patterns are perfect for a beginner to tackle (I'm think mostly of the snowmen).

Mike has a great carving style of his own and does a good job showing you step by step what he is trying to accomplish.

Children on Christmas Eve wrote a note to Santa Claus and built a snowwoman to carry the note to him. The snowwoman rushed to get it to him, but got lost and fell apart. Animals helped put her back together. This is an excellent animal adventure story with color illustrations. Recommended for students from the K through 4th grade.

More than I expected.......2001-10-18

I'm someone who is slowly leaving the superherogenre in comics. Next to that I never was a very big fan of Stan Lee as a writer. My surpirse was big when I started reading this and noticed the actual depth in here.

An enormous spaceship enters earth and the world is in fear. It lands and a creature who calls himself Galactus comes out. At first people are in fear and nobody dares to displease him. Earth is entirely without war or terrorism for a moment. A fake disciple steps up and tells how Galactus is the returning incarnation of the Messiah. Because there has been worldpeace since Galactus landed the disciple is believed. People start worshipping the creature from beyond and follow Galactus' every worth. Questioning nothing. The entire world is soon in chaos. The Silver Surfer decides to step up out of the anonymous mass and tries to convince people to stop listening to Galactus. An 'act against God'...

Although the dialogue is full of cliches it's never bothering here, it reads away fluently. And what's more important, the story itself is interesting and honestly thought-provoking. Not only is a fight between good vs bad presented here, but it also makes you think on what grounds you decide something is good or bad. It emphasizes the importance of one thinking for oneself instead of blindly following something you believe in. To never stop questioning. A free mind is everything.
The art by Moebius, although not his best, is very good as well. His imaging of Silver Surfer is probably the best I'be seen so far. I'd definately recommend this to both superhero fans as non-superhero fans.

Finally back in print.......2000-03-28

Marvel has a real problem with keeping their best works in print. They've been making progress over the past few years, however, and this is one of them.

Written by one of the "founding fathers" of the Marvel Universe, Stan Lee used this book to make a return to one of his most outstanding creations. His Surfer tales of old had a style like none of his others, capturing basic themes in stories of galactic scope, with more than a hint of allegory and religious reference. This story reads like one of his classic tales. The art is provided by Moebius, and the Surfer has never looked better. Moebius' fine-line work, detail, and soft colors beautifully capture the mood of this story. I wish he would turn his attention to more work like this, but with the sorry writing in today's American super-hero comics, I can't blame him for keeping a low profile.

Stories don't come along like this very often, so check it out. It's in a softcover printing, so it's affordable. The only problem I have with the story is some of the Surfer's dialogue, which sounds as if it were lifted from fortune cookies or self-help books.

An enjoyable 4 star read........2000-01-18

I haven't read any material from Stan Lee for years. I also haven't read any material from Mobiues in years. So reading this graphic novel was a treat for me.

The story was solid. The art was solid. Everything about the book was solid.

It was not a masterpiece, but still I found it to be a solid 4 star read.

The Best Graphic Novel Marvel Has To Offer.......1999-06-19

With a smooth calculated story that borders on religious teachings and fluid art by Moebius this is the best graphic novel available from Marvel Comics. The book is visualy astounding; with loose pencils that rely on inks the book has a flow that no other can match. It moves like cinema and Stan Lee wrote it. Moebius and Stan Lee. How can you go wrong?
