ASIN: 1586850881 |
Book Description
$50.00 hardcover 1-58685-088-1 November 10 x 10 in, 200 pp, 175 Color Photographs, 20 Black & White Photographs, Rights: W, Architecture The architecture of Mexico is some of the most striking and vivid of any in the world, characterized by open spaces, garden living, and vibrant colors. In the mid-twentieth century, renowned architects like Luis Barragan and Mathias Goeritz began to incorporate Euro-American Modernist design into the existing Mexican landscape and color scheme, creating a unique and exhilarating new design style in Mexico. Contemporary Mexican Design features the clean Modernist designs of Isaac Broid, Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon, and Abraham Zabludovsky, as well as the passionate color of Jorge Alessio Robles and Jose Iturbe. Khristaan Villela is director of the Thaw Art History Center and assistant professor of Art History at the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico. He received his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in the history of art. He lives in Santa Fe. Ellen Bradbury Reid has worked throughout the southwestern United States and Mexico. She has a master's degree from the University of New Mexico and has worked at the Beinecke Library at Yale University on the papers of Mabel Dodge Luhan. She lives in Sante Fe, where she is currently the director of Recursos de Santa Fe. Logan Wagner is an architect and builder with extensive knowledge of both traditional and contemporary Mexican architecture. He was raised and educated in Mexico, where he studied anthropology and architecture before coming to the United States to obtain a doctorate in architectural history from the University of Texas at Austin. He lives in Austin.

A bit low on content.......2001-07-15
While this is a nice enough book, there isn't a whole lot here. Photos are lovely, but they don't show a lot. I should explain that, as a designer, I use books constantly to spur my own inspiration, so I prefer to see more images, more details, more graphics showing how spaces work and flow together.
While the color reproduction is excellent, and in fact the photos are beautiful, as an inspirational tool I would have to put it way behind many other books on the subject. "Mexican Color" and "Mexicolor" are both better, and showcase equally excellent photography and reproduction but with more images and more ideas. The best books I have ever seen on old and new Mexican architecture and gardens are in a series by Patricia O'Gorman ( I own two, "Patios & Gardens of Mexico, and "Tradition of Craftsmanship in Mexican Homes", but there are more in the series). These are great design source books, stuffed with ideas. Photography is black and white, though, so you miss out on the wonderful colors.
I find "Mexican Contemporary" a pretty book but rather a pretentious and superficial one; mostly the reader is given only vignette photos, close ups, highly mannered interior set ups, squeaky clean views into the homes of some of Mexico's super-wealthy. There are some contexural shots: a palm tree against a blue wall, black and white details of pyramics, a 2 page spread of sunflowers and bougainvillea, and a few nice photos of traditional azuelos.
For me, there's just not enough content here.
Mexican Contemporary--"sequel" to Casa Mexicana.......1997-09-30
Another stunning pictorial of Mexican architecture, in the tradition of Casa Mexicana by Tim Street-Porter. The photography throughout this book is stunning, an inspirational source book of Mexican spaces, forms, colors and workmanship. Focusing on contemporary classics by Yturbe and Mestre, among others, Mexican Contemporary expands upon the contemporary chapters of Casa Mexicana. The only downside to this book is the repetition of much material already so well presented in Casa Mexicana (though the additional photographic glimpses into Mexican architecture are always welcome).
Just magnificent!.......1997-09-11
Never have I seen such incredible collection of unique architecture in Mexico. Not only was I inspired by the color, but it also provided me with a much better understanding of how significant the influence of Luis Barragan has been far reaching in today's modern world. Simply inspirational..

Artists have long been attracted to Provence for the quality of the light and for the dramatic color; now Colors of Provence demonstrates just what Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and others found there. Divided into chapters entitled "Red," "Orange," "Yellow," "Green," "Blue," and "White, Black, & Gray," the book is a feast of photographs celebrating the vermillion walls of a small French village, the shades of green in a Provençal herb garden, the cerulean blue of lavender spindles. In and around these luscious photos Michel Biehn weaves a net of words describing the culture and customs of Provence, with a few recipes thrown in for good measure. The Colors of Provence is a book made for dreaming over, ideal for those who have seen Provence for themselves, and those who hope to one day.
Book Description
Under the bright Provencal sun, the colors of earth, stone, trees, fruits, and flowers give this region its unique character and beautyâfrom the deep purple of lavender fields to the radiant yellow of sunflowers, and from the bright red of vine-ripened tomatoes to the earthy blackness of fresh truffles, the essential elements of Provence are unfolded chapter by chapter and color by color. Ochre bricks and roof tiles are set against ripe red cherries, while glistening clementines share the orange hues of Mediterranean coral. Yellow tints the popular pastis liqueur and the zucchini blossoms used in the local cuisine. Green recalls the traditional garden pottery while blue reflects the fishing boats and white symbolizes the region's famous cotton boutis bed coverings. An insider's guide includes the best addresses for fabrics, ceramics, antiques, and embroidery, sources for gourmet delicacies, and recipes for uniquely Provencal dining experiences. This book is a visually evocative and essential reference on this unique corner of the world.
Customer Reviews:
Local Color.......2001-03-22
Michel Biehn records in loving and sensuous detail the customs and culture of his native Provence, using color as an ingenious organizing theme. The book goes far beyond the cliched lavender. It reveals the purples that fill Provencal gardens at Easter: lilac, iris and wisteria; the deep indigo that dyed the "jute de Nimes" exported to the United States as "denim" (de Nimes) by Levi Strauss; the hot saffron that flavors bouillabaisse; the orange coral marketed at Marseille; the white-on-white boutis embroidery on quilts and linens for the traditional trousseau; the red stone villages rising from the red earth; the yellow of sunflowers, straw hats and bright silk petticoats. Biehn's particular interest, and expertise, in traditional Provencal fabrics and costumes provides a logical palette on which to juxtapose these dramatic colors. Filled with memories, history, folklore, poetry, garden wisdom and mouthwatering recipes, The Colors of Provence is illustrated with ravishing color photos of Provencal landscapes, homes and objects.
This book has very much enriched our journeys in Provence and prodded our memories when we reminisce about them. Michel Biehn's idiosyncratic list of his favorite places to visit in Provence has led us to wonderful restaurants, shops, tile works, fabric stores and museums. We found it a valuable resource for understanding the significance of artifacts in village museums in Provence, and especially the collections of the extraordinary Provencal folk museum - the Musee Arlaten - that poet Frederic Mistral established in Arles with his Nobel prize money. A lovely and lively book perfect for planning a journey to Provence or dreaming about one.
Gorgeous photos, magnificent colors!.......1999-08-20
I was given this book as a gift upon returning from a trip to France, and this more than any of my travel photos will remind me of and make me yearn to be back in Provence. Very beautiful!

Flash Gordon Volume 6
ASIN: 0974166464 |
Book Description
The second of Checker's re-issue of the color Flash Gordon strips from the pen and brush of its unsurpassed originator, Alex Raymond! The work of a master at his best, these color strips were originally published in 1935 and 1936.
Customer Reviews:
More classic adventure!.......2007-05-27
The adventure strip on the comics page has not yet quite gone the way of the dodo, but it is definitely in spotted owl territory: rare and threatened constantly by outside forces (such as newspaper economics). Certainly, the few that are left are bland. None can compare the adventure strips of yore, and among these, Flash Gordon is one of the tops.
The title character is a near perfect person, constantly getting himself out of cliffhanging situations. Stranded on the planet Mongo with two other Earth people, Flash attempts to bring peace to the warring kingdoms. His chief foe is the diabolical Ming the Merciless, Emperor of Mongo. The others from Earth are Flash's lover, Dale Arden, and the genius scientist, Hans Zarkov.
Volume 2 of Alex Raymond's strips (originally published between April 1935 and October 1936) include three storylines, each around the same length. In the first, "Witch Queen of Mongo", Flash is drugged by Azura, the Witch Queen of the Blue Magic Men; like almost all women of Mongo, Azura is willing to do anything to possess Flash. In this case, she makes him forget his past and pits him against his friends.
In "At War With Ming", Flash and his allies are forced to fight Ming when the emperor refuses to recognize Flash's rulership over various lands. In Undersea Kingdom of Mongo, Flash is stranded with the Sea Folk (due, of course, to the wiles of Queen Undina, who wants him) and has been converted to a water breather, estranging him from Dale and Hans.
It is the fantastic world that Raymond presents that outweighs any flaws in his writing and makes this a five star book. In comparison, few strips now offer anything so spectacular. If you enjoy fun adventure tales, this is well worth reading.
Amazing stuff!.......2005-06-21
As the reviewer points out, there are some things here that seem cliched, but the point to remember is that FLASH GORDON is almost entirely responsible for those kinds of things becoming cliches to begin with! It was the popularity of this strip that led to dozens of other comics, movies and TV shows to "borrow" from it so freely. Imitation IS the sincerest form of flattery, after all, and Alex Raymond has been "flattered" thusly more than just about any other creator who ever lived, short of Jules Verne!
KING FLASH of Mongo! .......2005-02-23
After surviving Ming's combat test in Volume 1, Alex Raymond continued the drama on Mongo with Flash receiving a Kingdom at the hand of Ming as a reward for winning. He and Dale discover that their "Kingdom" is a rather wild area, full of uncontrolled races that need to be subdued. Queen Azura is not on Mars like we saw in the serial with Buster Crabbe but is a Mongo beauty who falls instantly in love with our handsome Flash. A lot of activity takes place in caverns and dark realms and eventually Flash goes to war against MING. Volume 2 is easier to read with larger panels and will please fans with the excellent plot and writing that have gone into this serial that is mid-30's in time reference to when it was first published in the newspapers. Wonderful sci-fi stuff! Looking to Volume 3!

Book Description
Continuing Dark Horse Comics' tradition of finer reprint books, this is the second volume in our archival collection of Mac Raboy's lengthy Flash Gordon run. This series marks the first time that Raboy's Flash Gordon strips have ever been collected. Beginning his comics career in 1940, Emanuel "Mac" Raboy is perhaps best known for his work on Captain Marvel, Jr. and the Green Lama in the 1940s. He graduated from a government-funded art class, was heavily influenced by Alex Raymond's style, and, in the Spring of 1948, he signed on with King Features to illustrate the "Flash Gordon" Sunday page. Following in the footsteps of his idol, Mac Raboy's run on this serial was actually longer than Raymond's. Raboy drew the strip until his death in December of 1967, and several of his early wood engravings (from his fine art days) remain in the permanent collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum.
Customer Reviews:
MacRaboy's Flash Gordon Volume.......2007-01-11
I saw the original comics in the Milwaukee Sentinel long ago, in color. Enjoyed them, then, and enjoyed seeing these again.
Mac Raboy's Flash Gordon, vol. 1.......2005-10-03
Excellent for readers who were fans of the Mac Raboy era of the comic strip. I prefer Raboy's work to Alex Raymond's. Both were fine artists, but Raboy's drawing style is a bit more sophisticated, and his story-telling was less corny. (Raymond worked in an era when it was apparently considered necessary to constantly heap praise upon the hero.) Of course these stories have the episodic structure that all collections of this type have, a result of originally being published in short installments in a newspaper. My only real complaint though, is I wish they had chosen to reprint them in color (as the orignals were), rather in than black and white.
There's Nothing Wrong With Black & White But..........2005-02-23
Having heard great things of Mac Raboy and seen some engaging examples of his art in Steranko's "History of the Comics," I was really expecting something a lot better. IMHO, Raboy's art is similar to but less engaging than that of either Alex Raymond or Al Williamson. Raboy's work seems slicker and overworked by comparison. Part of the problem may be the daily-strip format, a series of identical-sized panels, which does not permit the kind of layouts possible in the color Sunday pages or Williamson's comic-book version.
The stories, which represent continuity from May through December of 1951, find Flash as the president of Mongo. After a series of adventures on different planets of Mongo's solar system Flash and Dale return to Earth's solar system for adventures on the Moon, Mars, and Venus. They are a regurgitation of the cliches established by Raymond, with corny monsters, beautiful princesses in love with Flash, treacherous villians, etc. Yeah, I know, what do you expect?
For me, Al Williamson's art consistently raised his Flash stories above the level of the writing. Raboy just doesn't seem to have the same level of imagination.
Great Idea, But ..........2003-06-13
Good news: The Dark Horse web page lists this as the first of four volumes, each covering five years of Raboy's time on the strip (Spring 1948 to his death in Dec 1967).
Bad news: Customers should be aware that these are black and white strips, not coloured. Given the often bizzare colours chosen for non-US strips, that may be a good decision, but imo there would still be a demand for a collection of Raboy's Flash as it appeared in US Sunday pages.
