Book Description
Massimiliano Fuksas, along with Renzo Piano, is one of the most influential Italian architects working today. This beautiful volume demonstrates how he has achieved this status: 36 built and unbuilt projects, each fully documented with superb photographs, models, drawings, and sketches. Fuksas' most recent works include the Emporio Armani flagship store in Hong Kong, the Jaffa Peace Center, and the Congress Center in EUR, Rome. An essay by Fuksas, a biographical chronology, and a selected bibliography complete this elegant and comprehensive monograph.

Book Description
Shrink and sew and you’re ready to go: creating chic felted garments can be as easy as that. Anyone who’s accidentally put a favorite sweater through the laundry and had it come out in miniature understands the basic process—and these creative, simple techniques make use of old wool garments cluttering the closet or purchased from a flea market. Just wash the clothes in hot water to produce the felted material, cut it, and stitch the fabric into any size and shape. Craft trendy beaded flower pins from sweaters dyed with Kool Aid. Create a Victorian scarf and mitten set from felt and doilies, and decorate with rows of ribbons. Give a child a snuggly bear hat that’s cute as can be. They’re all fabulous!

Recycling Treasures.......2007-08-09
Reading and enjoying the photos of finished projects has inspired me to make use of my wool sweaters that are outdated, moth damaged, and shrunk when mixed accidentally with normal laundry. I enjoy recycling old into new, useful items. With the holidays fast approaching, there are many great ideas for gifts.
Finally!.......2007-06-25
For a couple of years, I've been making felted articles from thrift store sweaters, based on limited information available in the knitting mags. Finally, a book on this unlimited subject has been published, providing much needed guidance and creative inspiration. Felt It starts with the basics, where to find inexpensive feltable garments and then how to shrink them (the felting process). Actually cutting into one of these sweaters is daunting, but the section on cutting and piecing calms that apprehension. With easy to follow instructions and patterns for 39 projects, ranging from delicate flowers to Christmas stockings to sturdy backpacks, this book can keep the felter busy for months if not longer. A section on needlefelting (by hand and by sewing machine) is included. Felt It! Stitch It! is a Fabulous! resource.
Booklist review.......2007-05-01
Here is a review of my new book from Booklist. I am so thrilled that they were so pleased with it and I hope you will be also!
Bieber, Katheryn Tidwell. Felt It! Stitch It! Fabulous! Creative Wearables from Flea Market Finds. May 2007. 128p. illus. index. Sterling/Lark/Chapelle, $24.95 (1-60059-067-5). 746.
This is not a knitting book, although it looks like one. Using a technique she calls "fast felting," the author turns old, discarded sweaters found at flea markets, thrift stores, or even the back of the closet into clothes and accessories that look handmade. And at first glance, you would think this was just another felted knitting book. The projects are contemporary, creative, and stylish. The process--shrinking old sweaters to create felted materials--saves both time and money, for quick results. Bieber covers every aspect of the process, from finding appropriate feltable garments to arranging the pattern pieces to maximize the details of the felted materials. The author assumes some basic sewing experience, but the projects can be completed using either a sewing machine or by hand. Most helpful are the sections on finding the correct sweater and photographs illustrating the before and after of different types of knits so readers can see what kind of results to expect. The projects have strong appeal to knitters and sewers as well as the reuse, recycle, and repurpose craft movement. --Jennifer Palmer

A FUN COLLECTIBLE BOOK and HISTORY LESSON, TOO.......2002-04-29
I have purchased other books in this series that have been rather skimpy and--the truth be told--boring. But the COLLECTIBLES edition is anything but. I picked up a healthy helping of tips and techniques on collecting (and have visted some of the super recommended Web sites). But I also learned a great deal about history through the collectible items featured in the book--like stamps and coins. The political items chapter was fabulous. And I love the cool collectible pictures throughout the book. The variety was neat. This is just a fun and informative book!!!
Entertaining and informative from start to finish!!!.......2002-04-06
This is a great starter book for collectors of all kinds. Just the Web site recommendations alone are worth the purchase price. I found a super wholesale distributor for flea market sellers (like me) that I didn't know existed!!! I've since placed an order for dolls, collector knives, etc. at rock bottom prices!!! Another thing I really like about this book is its breezy and witty approach to things. The author gives us histories of so many collectible items. I'm not a postcard collector, for instance, but I found reading about them fascinating. This book is just plain fun!!!
Fun and Informative Introduction!.......2002-03-31
This book is worth getting for all the cool websites it lists, but as a bonus you get gobs more good stuff. It's an interesting intro to collectibles of all kinds. There's practical information and fun historical tidbits about collecting and collectibles. I learned a lot of things I didn't know. I'll be an educated consumer when I visit the flea markets and garage sales in my town. This book totally rocks! As they say on ebay: A+++++

Whether you've just finished working through Katherine Ulrich's Flash 5 for Windows and Macintosh, or have taken another route to Flash 5 competence, this book is aimed at you. Author Russell Chun is speaking to anyone who has "mastered the basics of tweening and [is] ready to move on to more complex tasks involving video, masking, dynamic sound control, or movie-clip collision detection."
Flash 5 Advanced for Windows and Macintosh is organized into five sections covering advanced animation, ActionScript, navigation and timelines, transforming graphics and sound, and information handling. Each chapter builds on what's gone before as the book deals with progressively more complex techniques, though that needn't stop you from dipping in further back if, for example, you're itching to know how to do clever stuff with sound.
The book pulls you in right from the start with strategies for building complex animations from simpler parts. The logical structure of the chapters encourages you to fast-forward if you feel you're ahead of the rest of the class. The numbered tasks (rarely comprising more than six steps), together with frequent tips, make it a simple matter to locate a technique, try it, then apply it to whatever you're working on.
Flash 5 Advanced for Windows and Macintosh isn't full of stunning animation. If you want to be impressed by the possibilities of Flash, you'd be better off with New Masters of Flash. But for a thorough and comprehensive tutorial that doubles as an accessible reference, it hits the right level for those ready to hone their Flash authoring skills. --Ken McMahon, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
Looking for guide to Macromedia Flash that goes beyond the basics? You're not alone. This popular software has generated an enormous demand for advanced Flash titles, but most third-party books offer limited instruction in Action Scripting and Movie Clips--essential functions for complex Flash interactivity.
Well, look no further than
Flash 5 Advanced for Windows & Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide. This is not your typical cookbook-style guide with examples for users to copy. Instead, this thorough reference covers the advanced features and techniques of Flash, and demonstrates ways to approach animation and interactivity, encouraging you to "think" in Flash. The book covers five main topics: advanced animation, understanding ActionScript, navigation, transforming graphics and sound, and working with information, and uses the same task-based, visual reference format of the Visual QuickStart Guide series.
Customer Reviews:
The best book ever written on advanced Flash techniques........2003-11-15
I bought this book a number of years ago, when I was struggling with creating effective animations, and Actionscript really intimidated me. Right now I'm enjoying a productive career doing professional Flash work, and I wouldn't be as proficient at Flash if it weren't for this book.
I'm the kind of person who likes to develop my own skills and techniques instead of 'formulaically' imposing someone else's techniques into my work. This book is perfect! It doesn't waste any time on 'How to draw a circle!', and gets straight to teaching the critical foundation skills of making good Flash. Don't worry though, it isn't one of those 'Bibles', but at the same time it isn't about creating one big project through the course of the book.
In my opinion, this book is the perfect balance between reference and teaching. It gives you the solid skills and techniques on how to lay down advanced flash, which fully eliminates the mystery of things, so you can then expand on these techniques with your own innovation.
What's best, I keep coming back to -this- one book, even in these days of Studio MX 2004 Pro, for an effective reference manual. At the time of writing this review, I'm working on an interactive skeletal system for my animations, and paged to the section on angles and math to help me create proper rotating limbs.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a Flash master!
Very Good Book.......2003-05-23
After being intrigued by Macromedia Flash and learning as much as possible via internet and the included tutorials, I felt I had a pretty good grasp of Flash. Still eager to learn more, I found this book and I must say that I couldn't have made a better choice. It was exactly what I needed to get to the next level, and the way the concepts were presented couldn't have been done in a more pleasing way. On a scale of 1 to 10 on Flash advancement, I'd say I went from a 4 to a 7.5. This is a definate keeper.
A great companion book to the Quick Start Guide to Flash 5.......2002-06-10
This is a great book for those who want advanced flash techniques and skills. I'd buy both the beginner flash book and this one together. When you are done with this book, you'll know the in's and out's of flash and be able to put your flash movies to useful work. This book focuses on the action scripts and advanced movies. I would highly recommend this book.
Some great stuff in here.......2002-05-27
Too much to say, but this writing helps you incorporate Quicktime, 3d, actionscript, and many other aspects of flash. It's a great book which covers many topics briefly. You get a book like this to see what it interests you most about software, and buy more specific, in-depth books to follow up. It's also a great reference.
Great book.......2002-02-25
This book covers the various areas of creating key flash elements for your web pages that require actionscript. A great book for anyone who is trying to learn some of the more advanced features of Flash 5.
Book Description
C. Fred Bergsten, Bates Gill, Nicholas R. Lardy and Derek Mitchell are the principal authors of this investigative analysis, full of new information and perspectives on China, the result of a year-long task force jointly sponsored by CSIS and IIE, to which distinguished China experts have contributed. It is accessible, narrative-driven, filled with facts, but written for the general reader. The expert judgments presented in China: The Balance Sheet will inform policymakers in Washington, scholars and the business community for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
Little, No Credibility!.......2007-01-11
Pg. 4: "China's average wage is one-thirtieth of the U.S. and its average productivity level is equally lower (and wages, in any event account for only 20% of the cost of producing textiles and 5% of the cost of producing semiconductors)." If so, manufacturers that offshore in China would be stupid; alternatively, "China: The Balance Sheet" has a serious credibility problem. I go with the latter.
Nonetheless, this is still some value to the book for its statistics. For example, the authors believe China's foreign exchange reserves reached $1 trillion in '06, far more than any other country's, and probably more than enough to make serious improvement in its pollution and poverty problems. By 2050, China's economy is projected to be the world's largest; foreign investment only accounts for 5% of its capital growth - the Chinese savings rate of about 33% is more than enough to handle China's growth with money left over.
As for social services, "The Balance Sheet" asserts a mid-90's adult literacy rate of about 80% (vs. 50% in India) and graduates 800,000 scientists and engineers/year, while spending only 2.8% of GDP on education. Healthcare accounts for about 6% - far less than the U.S.' 16%.
Only 16% of China's land is arable, and most of its population lives on it. China's leaders are pressured to improve employment to absorb those leaving rural China, as well as those 40% released from state-jobs (including 80% from state-owned manufacturers).
Bergsten et al are most concerned about the possibility of conflict between the U.S. and China re Taiwan, and they point out that China uses its political (U.N. Security Council membership) and economic muscle to "encourage" others to support it re Taiwan.
China Background.......2006-12-19
I haven't read this book but have read several others by Nick Lardy and studied with him at Yale. I disagee with several reviewers who characterize Nick and his colleagues as ignorant about China and are simply imposing a western view. Nick was studying China and the economy (in Chinese) long before it was a popular subject and is intimately familiar with the country's economy. In a country where data is often obscured by politics, he has done an excellent job of piecing together disparate facts to achieve a coherent whole. He may be skeptical, but he's often correct.
A book for politicians!.......2006-11-05
I find this book extremely dull because it is mainly made up of statements. But then I realise that, written by government think tanks, this book is for politicians.
If you are a general reader and want to understand how China is affecting the world, I recommend China Shakes the World or China Inc. And if are interested in the recent history of China (pre-1978), read Wild Swans.
If you are a business person and want to understand how to do business in China, I recommend The China Executive by Dr Wei Wang.
Another American type of arrogance.......2006-10-27
I can't agree with . Shih "M.Smith"'s review even more. I just can't stand the arrogance tone shown in this book. I got a feeling that the authors simply don't like the progress in China. It seems like the authors are simply trying to minimizing the progress China made and relishing the problems China has.
I seriously doubt the authors ever read any Chinese sources or talk to any Chinese scholar. The authors seem to imply that if the Chinese to follow the American way, then they will never succeed. True, China has a tons of problems. But the Chinese leaders and Chinese people are trying their best to solve them. What annoys me is that some of these authors seem to relish over the fact that China has so many problems
You won't get that much new info about China in this book. Yea, China has tons of problems. Who doesn't know. The authors are trying to answer the most complex questions of China with simplistic answers.
Typical American bias.......2006-10-26
Well, what can I say about this book? With a due respect to the authors, it's the same usual American bias toward developing countries. As an American living and working in China for the past 2 years:
1)It's hard for Americans/Westerners to understand how business is done in China? Well, my answer it's because China is NOT in the West and Chinese people are not westerners. Try learning the language first, be respectful, and don't be so obnoxious.
2)This is the same background noise that I hear from overeducated ideologues: If a country is not like the US, then it must be wrong. I guess the Chinese should have a 4th world healthcare system like the US?
3)I personally feel that some authors wish China to stay poor so Madonna can have a concert there and pretend that the rich countries care. Well, maybe Africa, but not China.
4)Just because you watch CNN, FOX, and NBC, it does not make you an expert.
5)Just because you went to an Ivy League school, it does not make you a genius about other countries and cultures. As matter of fact, it does not make you a genius (period)
6)US should comment less on China and worry about the pointless war in Iraq, the death of our soldiers for a pointless cause, broken US healthcare, outsourcing of the American jobs, broken borders, broken education system, children killing each other at schools...and the list goes on.
7)China has many societal problems; please tell me something I don't know. China is working on it, it takes time, and they are not magicians.
8)If China is so awful please don't do business there nor go visit there. For the fact that there are SO many foreign investments there, makes all business executives and companies from the West idiots.
Book Description
This in-depth look at the duo's career includes vintage record sleeves, a detailed discography, chart information and a complete annotated list of their songs.
Customer Reviews:
The One and Only - Bacharach in Print.......2003-04-15
Even though they were one of the greatest songwriting teams of the 1960's, there's never been a book written about Bacharach and David. "Burt Bacharach & Hal David: What the World Needs Now" is the first. It is full of strong archival material and includes Platts' interviews with Burt and Hal, plus many artists, including Dionne Warwick, Gene Pitney, and B.J. Thomas. The book is a detailed wealth of information of this songwriting team's body of work. A must read for Bacharach/David fans, musicians and music historians. The book tells the complete story of Bacharach and David's songwriting partnership, from the 1950s to their reunion in the 90s. The book includes color photos of record sleeves, a detailed discography, chart information and a comprehensive list of every song Bacharach and David wrote together. Robin Platts' style of writing is comfortable and concise. As a songwriter myself, I was inspired by this book.
Book Description
Ankerberg and Weldon’s Q–and–A format explains Islam’s beginnings, Muslims’ beliefs about God and Jesus, and how Islamic beliefs relate to recent terrorist acts. A must–have for Christ–centered insight into a growing religious and political power.
Customer Reviews:
Devil can cite scripture for his purpose - Shakespeare.......2006-01-05
This book is a very devotional work, written with a zeal of missionary. It appears that this work of John Ankerberg is very subjective in order to appeal to the emotions of his "audience". If we try to judge the book based on the current scientific standards, this book falls short of that. Serious writers on a subject should not allow their sentiments and personal biases to creep into their writings, especially if they are writing about a faith which they themselves do not believe in. There is no place for such things as "intellectual dishonesty" in the scientific world. In addition, this book is filled with "out of context" information about Islam. It only reminds its readers what Shakespeare said in "The Merchant of Venice":
"The devil can cite scripture for his purpose."
Read it if you hate Islam already.......2005-10-26
This book is for those who hate Islam already, and only want to strengthen their convictions. The source material for the "research" is extremist literature and other Islam-hating books.
For those who wish to get true scholarly information on Islam from an unbiased source, I recommend "Islam: an Introduction" by Annemarie Schimmel. She spent more years at Harvard researching Islam and Muslims than many of us have lived.
2 and 1/2 stars really... .......2005-04-05
you'll get a good general outline of islam in general, terrorism, ect. a quarter of this book's terribly winded/dry/
Out of context........2004-02-13
These writers are quoting out of context. Readers should beware. Allow me to give an example from the bible of how things can be manipulated to fit a certain agenda.
Deuteronomy 13:13-16
13. Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;
14. Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently: and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you;
15. Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.
16. And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the Lord thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again.
Rubbish.......2003-10-15
All the reviewers here keep talking about scholarship, and unbiased information etc.
This book is far from any of these. It is shabby, inaccurate (and at many places incorrect) and gross misrepresentation.
If you want to read real books about Islam by people who are truly objective, then read those by John Esposito. I do not agree with Dr Espositos conclusions myself sometimes, but I respect his opinions because they are well researched and objective.

Nancy's Best.......2007-08-15
Jake, the overworked, divorced father of twelve-year-old daughter, Deb, is convinced that his self-sufficiency precludes dependence on anyone else. Jake's somewhat foolish ex-wife, Rhonda, severely burdens Jake's self sufficiency when she succumbs to the wooing of Freddy, a self-styled film producer out for more than love, and shifts more and more responsibility for the care of Deb and Napoleon, the family Pekinese, back to Jake. Carly, the dog groomer, a 26 year old woman who looks like a teenager, strikes an instant rapport with both Napoleon and Deb and, as friendships develop, lays siege to Jake's independence. This is a hilariously entertaining story--a 'must read.'
