Book Description
Louis Kahn (1901-74) is one of the most renowned practitioners of international modernism, on a par with Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe in the extent of his influence on subsequent generations of architects. Kahn sought the spiritual in his powerful forms, and encouraged his students to seek the essential nature of architecture. His Philadelphia-based practice was responsible for such masterpieces as the Richards Medical Research building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the Yale Art Gallery extension in New Haven, Connecticut; the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas; the government complex at Dhaka, Bangladesh; and the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California.
This title, in the same format as our highly successful Rem Koolhaas: Conversations with Students, contains a little-known essay by Kahn on his sources of inspiration, an interview with the architect on his working methods and his vision for the future of the profession, and writings on Kahn by Michael Bell and Lars Lerup, contributors to our title Stanley Saitowitz.
Louis Kahn: Conversations with Students is the latest title in the series from the Rice University School of Architecture.

Introduction and conclusions lacking.......2006-05-16
Just to add some context to my review, I am a graduate student in architecture doing an independent study on Kahn's work. That doesn't mean you should listen to me, but simply that I care about this.
There is a clear attempt by Bell and others to cash in on Kahn's popularity by adding texts to the end which are close to useless vis-a-vis an attempt to comprehend the lecture. Kahn's use of so many idiosyncratic phrases compells anyone compiling his work to explain, as best he or she can, what those mean. This is sadly lacking. If I knew what "white light, black shadow" meant to Kahn, I'd be better prepared to engage the text. One could claim Barthe's intentional fallacy, but, I think that's a bad excuse.
Additionally, the introduction doesn't give an adequate summary of the political/social climate surrounding the talks, ie. Vietnam, King's death, etc., which I think plays a part in understanding the phrase "white light, black shadow" as well as others.
That said, the lectures are really stunning, and, suprizingly accesible after a few reads. An overall continuity is harder to come by, but within a page or so range, there is a strong logic to his thinking. I don't know if this lecture is reproduced anywhere else, if you can't find "white light, black shadow", it would be worth the purchase. The question and answer is also interesting, but less so. Again, Bell should go hug someone, he clearly needs it.
an eneffable peice of work.......2000-08-04
Louis I Kahn is and has been thought of as one of the greatest Architects of his time, and an exemplary thinker. This book is excellent for a student who wishes to seek beyond the asthetics of architecture and begin to touch on the philosophies of this way of life we call architecture, and see it how it can lend itself to the "institutions of man"

Great reference, excellent history & materials section.......2001-06-16
This is a wonderful reference book for the watercolor painter. It contains all kinds of useful information to help you understand the medium and improve your knowledge and skills.
The first 40 pages provide a great history of watercolor painting, so often overlooked in the overall scheme of art history. Then all the aspects of setting up a work area and studio are covered followed by a very thorough materials and tools section. There are example pictures and descriptions of everything from easels to paper and brushes to paint. There is also a paper stretching demo and a watercolor color chart.
A section on the principles of drawing follows. This includes instructions on making simple shapes, creating perspective, Plato's rule, golden sections, drawing a quick sketch and more. Then various watercolor techniques such as creating washes, erasing with a dry brush and achieving texture with salt and turpentine are covered. Next, there are two chapters on color theory and mixing explaining warm, cool and broken colors as well as color schemes and values. A nice demo of painting a watercolor with three colors is included.
The last chapters deal with techniques, skills and actually beginning the painting process. Here you find information and advice on painting the human figure, skies, clouds, trees, landscapes, illustrations and seascapes. There are no real projects here and no reference photos. Rather the focus is on general advice for painting various subjects with example demonstrations. A helpful glossary is included in the back. This is certainly one of the most thorough, useful and entertaining books I have seen for the beginning watercolorist.

"Painting Water"--Refreshing!.......2004-02-03
As a watercolorist specializing in seascapes/waterscapes, I've read dozens of how-to books. "Painting Water" is the best of the genre and a joy to use. Joe Francis Dowden does an excellent job of presenting techniques and tips in an easy-to-understand, concise style. Where many other authors seem to omit key painting steps, Mr. Dowden is thorough and precise. His color demostrations rank among the best I've ever seen. In a mere 96 pages the author has given us an outstanding guide to the painting water all watercolorists should find invaluable.

Help for a most challenging subject.......2005-02-11
I have been painting & teaching watercolor for 15 years. This is the first helpful book that I have found on painting seascapes in watercolor. I accidentally ran across it in the library of a retirement community where I teach & immediately borrowed it. It contains basic sketches & information about the "character" & construction of waves, surf, foam, & trails which the ordinary painter is not aware of. Reading this book is an "education"; it contains sketches & how-to instructions which any painter can follow to practice painting seascapes in watercolor -- one of the most challenging subjects in this media. As soon as I located this book on Amazon.com, I ordered it.
Book Description
Twelve classic design motifs make composition simple Six variations on a design theme for each motif, plus ten artist examples in styles from realistic to abstract Great for beginners, illuminating for pros
Composition is one of the great puzzles of watercolor painting. Watercolor by Design solves that puzzle! Author Marianne Brown shows artists how to create innovative paintings using twelve classic design motifs, grouped by type: cruciform, horizontal bar, and vertical bar; checkerboard, asymmetric, and staggered grids; radial, cantilever, and pyramid; and frame in frame, allover pattern, and floating shapes. The properties and impact of each motif are explained, then reinforced with six variations on a design theme for each motif, followed by at least ten creative examples by different artists working in different styles from realism to abstract to illustrate the possibilities. Packed with ideas and information, Watercolor by Design lets both new and experienced artists make composition work for them.

Much of the material was valuable but the illustrating pictures were somewhat disappointing. The subject was very wide but the aspects selected were the ones most often met.

wet and wonderful watercolor expression.......2003-07-11
This is one of the most sought after books on watercolor portraiture. Reid suggests the face and still gets a likeness. He leaves something for the viewer to fill in and be a part of the painting. It takes practice and intuition to bring out the aritists innate intuitive abilities expressed on paper. Reid shows step by step how he approaches his subject. He focuses on contrast and value and immediacy to give the painting life and spontaniety. A valued book to read over and over.
Not Charles' best book -- but quite good none the less.......2002-07-16
...The book is brown, in colour and concept. Charles' book on Natural Painting is much more appealing. However this book is well written and illustrated although not colorfully. There is some interesting insight into portrait technique -- but realistically, I doubt if Charles learned to paint this way himself ... his talent is inborn and self-taught. His portraits are startling and unique in their ability to capture likenesses from a swirling mass of tone and/or color sometimes using only subtlist details of shade and highlight. The facial details that we plebians see (2 eyes, nose, mouth, chin, hair) have little to do with Charles' images -- sometimes many key features are ill defined or undefined ... however he always manages to capture the likeness. He sees in a different way -- I think he sees primarily tones (shades of gray) more than anything -- color seems to be secondary to him (this is apparent in his Natural Painting book too) -- yet he also has a unique and insightful perspective on colors, especially skin tones. A good book.

Book Description
Practical advice, approaches and exercises to improve your watercolor techniques and skills.
Learn how to capture the translucency and energy of water in paint with this beautifully illustrated guide. Whether it is the focus of a watercolor painting or part of a wider landscape, water is the element that has the most immediate eye-catching appeal. Capturing it on paper, however, is not always easy, and the variety of subjects and atmospheres to be painted - from furious energy and speed to placid stillness - can be a hindrance to artists.
Author Christian Wharton uses finished paintings, sketches and step-by-step projects to help artists organize their compositional and observation skills and also demonstrates the technical side of painting the glory of water in watercolor.

Simultaneously inspiring and disappointing.......2004-02-07
Though the text of this book evidences a brilliant, well read mind filled with sagacious insights into the difficulties of making art, the paintings themselves, while sometimes beautiful, are sometimes amateurish. She makes her own paints out of dry pigment and the how to do section on this is unique. She applies paint by using the side a of flat brush and dabbing on the paint. Her darks are made by combinations of ultramarine, and cadmium red and cadmium yellow. If you know anything about paints, you will be able to predict the muddy, opaque mess likely to result from such mixes. All this said, she employs a limited palette and has a unique approach and I learned a great deal from her book. Several paintings, like the cover, are unique in their focus on fleeting light effects in water. She is highly influenced, when all is said and done, by Monet and many of he paintings look like Monet style oils -- hard to believe they are in watercolor.

Great tutorial for painting water in all of its guises.......2004-04-23
Reading the other review, I had to provide some balance. This book teaches a very impressionist version of representing water. The colors used are naturalkistic and the waterscapes are varied--from mtn. brooks to raging seas smashing against high cliffs. It's an excellent book and I learned a great deal from it.
Not recommended-abyssmal.......2002-08-15
Teaches a very "British" style of realistic watercolor. Covers still water, moving water, lakes, seaside villages, surf, cliffs and waves, etc. The paintings are uneven, some a bit muddy with umber mixtures. Not a great book to learn about painting water from since it is actually a more general landscape book. In fact, the one demonstration painting is a painting of a house--no water. The clincher is that the white water of surf is rendered with gobs of white gouache--literally gooey gobs. This is not transparent watercolor technique. Oh yea-the shadows under the waves are done in burnt umber!!!? Avoid. I want my money back!!!!

Comix Classic.......2000-05-08
A Shroud for Waldo is another excellent collection of "Waldo" comics from underground comix artist Kim Deitch. His artwork (black and white) will appeal to those who like cross-hatched line work and comics with an edge. These definitely aren't "Garfield" like comics. Deitch's other collections: All Waldo Comics, Hollywoodland and Beyond the Pale are also recommended.
