Book Description

Enjoy it for its sheer beauty or use it for inspiration while creating your own small landscape garden.

Japanese gardening is the art of arranging plants, rocks, lanterns, and basins in an open or, as here, an enclosed space. According to the aesthetic principles long prevailing in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, even two rocks arranged in a tiny, enclosed space can be considered a garden. This
type of garden is called a tsuboniwa, and Kyoto has long being considered its birthplace and home. So it is not surprising that photographer Katsuhiko Mizuno, wishing to capture the best of such small gardens, should turn to Kyoto and its palaces, temples, shrines, and town houses.

The highlight of the book is the 100 photographs of these tsuboniwa-snow overlying sand patterns; coloring maple leaves; flowering cherry trees; lanterns, basins, fences; gardens featuring wisteria, azalea, hydrangea, Indian lilac, camellia, and daphne. Each photo is accompanied by an insightful
caption pointing out the outstanding characteristics of the garden in question.

An appendix gives Mizuno's instructions for creating a tsuboniwa, based on his personal experience. His account of the underlying concepts, design, choice of plants, and practical procedures will prove a invaluable reference for all garden creators, from amateur to professional.

4 out of 5 stars Nice pictures.......2006-06-29

This book is not only a great picture book, but it also provides wonderful descriptions of the Japanese gardens featured - succinct and informative. If you like landscaping with the Japanese feel, you'll enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars faulty product.......2006-02-24

The book is excellent but the dust cover was torn obviously before despatch as the packaging was good.
The disappointment was that there was no method of complaint other than returning the product. From Australia to USA not practible.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the basics, Japanese Garden Book.......2006-01-19

I've been through a lot of Japanese gardening books, and many of been a little repetitive, covering the basic design elements and what not. Mizuno has put together a great "Intermediate" read once you've had enough of the basics. The pictures are some of the best available of authentic Japanese gardens, and the captions are short and to the point but with just enough plant identifications to be useful to someone in their planning stage.

Perhaps the best feature of this book is the introductory discussion on the "Omoteya style" town home (traditional Japanese merchant class town home). The text suggest there is a conservation movement to this vanishing style of Japanese home that mirrors the affection American's are beginning to culture towards the Bungalow. As the Omoteya styled homes share similar dimensions with the American city lot (diagrams are provided with the text), this book is a fabulous resource to urban dwellers looking to incorporate the Japanese garden concept to their grassy postage stamp.

5 out of 5 stars A book to inspire you.......2003-10-31

Beautiful pictures and good text. It doesn't contain "how to do" tips but there is a chapter on how the author build one tsuboniwa in a Kyoto house.

        5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2005-10-23

This book starts out by introducing basic concepts such as exposure, composition, lightning and how this effects landscape photographs. It then continues with an in-depth description of how to approach various landscapes and weather conditions. The text is clearly written and each concept emphasized with illustrative examples. The book can be followed by novices, but the large amount of tips and tricks should definitely attract more experienced photographers. Also nice about this book, is that the description of camera gear is done in a very general way, omitting examples of todays hardware (outdated tomorrow). Reading this book has strengthened my technical background and given me a lot of ideas that I'm eager to try out. I have no trouble recommending it.

There I was thinking I knew about taking photograhs, but I learnt such a lot, and the sample pictures demonstrate with great clarity what the focus should and can be.

As a result I am now looking for more books from Michael Coyne.

3 out of 5 stars some useful tips..........2005-09-21

I bought the lonely planet travel photography guide a few years ago and absolutely loved it! I learned a lot of the basics and really improved my "photo taking" skills. Therefore I was very excited when i found out about the publication of this book. However this people photography guide was disappointing. It provides some useful tips on taking photographs of people but the photos inside the book are not particularly inspiring. Some are good but many are just so-so. (whether one likes a photo or not is very subjective, in my view, but the photos inside this book are really not that exciting. may be i was expecting more from an expert in the field)

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, with caveats.......2001-02-08

The format of the book is excellent. As in all Busselle's other books in this series, every page features a picture with paragraphs "Seeing," "Thinking," and "Acting." So one obtains a feeling of creating the picture. The emphasis on composition dominates the book, and is its greatest asset --- besides the pictures themselves.

There are, also, some valuable comments of obvious but overlooked matters, such as: "Many holiday photographs are disappointing because there is an attempt to combine recognisable portraits of people with pictures of a scene, the classic snap of someone standing awkwardly in front of a famous landmark. These are usually neither fish nor fowl, and it's generally far better to concentrate on one element or the other."

          Enough said.

The main caveat is that the pictures are usuaully with highly saturated slide film --- such as Velvia --- often with warming filters to boot. The colors are then eye-popping. Most of the time this is pleasing, but often it is a bit too much and, therefore, unrealistic. The emphasis on pumped color ends up somewhat overdone, with little attention to softer, more subtle effects. Also, anyone who uses print film has to adjust the technical aspects to his/her needs. However, the general discussions of composition are excellent.

Before opening Tropical Houses, hide your passport. As soon as you get a glimpse of these incredible houses nestled among lush tropical landscapes, you'll want to head straight to the airport. Author Tim Street-Porter spent more than 10 years traveling through Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Bali, Java, Mexico, and Belize, meeting the owners of these Shangri-las and taking interior and exterior photos. Tropical Houses offers intelligent, dreamy commentary and over 272 breathtaking full-color photos.

Visit the House of Iseh in Bali and sit in the verdant shadow of the sacred volcano Gunung Agung. Said writer Anna Mathews of the view from the terrace: "Once you have lived in this place you can never be the same again. You are driven mad by beauty." In Jamaica, imagine you're a guest at Good Hope. Originally a plantation, Good Hope is now a 10-room villa that overlooks the Queen of Spain valley and the Cockpit Mountains. To look at these provocative photos is to imagine yourself in another life--one where you lounge on the veranda while white-jacketed waiters quietly replace your empty rum-and-pineapple drink. The owners of these estates have taken great care (at great expense) to create private, tropical paradises. One of the most stunning is Taprobane, an incredible retreat dominating the tiny island of the same name. Built by Count de Mauny-Talvande, the house is "an octagonal villa that allowed for verandahs in every direction; a 1930s folly, which, with small gardens extending through the foliage to the overhanging edges, fully occupied the crest of his island."

The careful architecture and landscaping of these estates "opens a world of sensual experiences." When the sky is gray and you don't have time for a vacation, Tropical Houses will lift your spirits and quiet your wanderlust. --Dana Van Nest

          Book Description

The ambient warmth of the tropics causes architectural distinctions between indoors and out to evaporate, along with the walls that divide them. Houses expand into the landscape, while the sights, sounds, and scents of nature waft through living spaces. Indeed, one of the pleasures of living in the tropics is an awakening of the senses that brings us closer to nature.

Internationally renowned photographer and writer Tim Street-Porter has spent more than ten years traveling through Bali, Java, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Belize, and Jamaica. This book's 272 stunning photographs, supported by Street-Porter's fascinating and informed commentary, capture the appeal and the meaning of the enviable dwellings he found in his journeys. It may be the outdoor bath, a sybarite's delight, with sun filtering through a frangipani tree . . . the deep-eaved verandah, where one sips coffee while contemplating the neighboring valley shrouded in early morning mist . . . or the thatch-roofed palapa, its main supports local tree trunks wrapped in strangler vine.

These wonderful expressions of vernacular architecture -- many the products of the world's finest architects and designers--nest in jungles, perch over volcanic cliffs, stand placidly beside lagoons, and exist always in harmony with the nature that envelops them. These are real places where people really live, but each seems suspended in a setting that is at once dreamlike and elemental.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Exotic.......2004-05-28

The cover is just a teaser to the exciting tropical houses Tim Street-Porter captures in this wondeful book. A real treat to exclusive tropical living around the world. Also an excellent reference to decorate in the tropical look. Street-Porter does it again as he did in Casa Mexicana. A book to enjoy over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for Decorating Ideas.......2003-01-15

We are trying to get an "island" feel for our home and this book was the perfect reference. Not only are the pictures of the homes (inside and out) breathtaking, but there is enough detail about the decorating itself to be useful for our purpose. The only downside is that it makes you want to sell your current house and just travel the world staying in these amazing homes! Especially tempting is the contact information at the very end in case you actually want to rent one of them on vacation...

          5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-05-25

I found this to be a wonderful book - it has some amazing pictures. It affords you the opportunity to view some beautiful private houses that you are unlikely to be able to visit. Unlike some other books that focus primarily on houses in South East Asia, this one also features some great houses in Mexico and Jamaica.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable book of "slice of life" stories........1999-09-20

Murphy's stories in _House of Java_ are honest looks at relationships: romantic, platonic, intergenerational, and otherwise. The only weak link in the story is a horror-type sketch that reeks of urban legend, set in the desert. The other stories held my attention, and the characters are drawn with wit, intelligence, and compassion.

          I recommend this book.

          Book Description

The newest collection of warm slice of life stories without the cynicism. Some melancholic, some hopeful, some humorous, all keenly and quietly observant. Main stories include ŒSteven¹' exploring the blurry line between friendship and love between 2 comics fans, ŒTide Pools¹' where a visiting student encounters a girl with an itch to move on and out of her small town life but no gumption to go through with it, the particularly remarkable ŒMay 27th¹' which brings a student social worker face to face with delinquency brought on by lower class despair, and ŒThe Burial¹, with its aura of mystery, in which a terrible secret is literally unearthed leading to an insightful revelation. Collected from the comic book issues 1 through 4.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Not Original.......2003-09-03

This collection of ten "slice of life" stories is Murphy's second book (I haven't read the first). The stories fall into three categories: "House of Java", "Paper Route", and "Optic Nervish". The four "House of Java" stories are brief one or two pagers set at a coffeeshop, and depict either conversations with, or internal monologues concerning, the opposite sex. These are brief riffs on usual themes (pick up lines, dirty thoughts), unoriginal, but skillfully executed. The two "Paper Route" stories are more retro-cartoony in style and feature a paperboy living in the '70s and his not so wild adventures. These are not particularly funny or interesting, almost on the level of an Archie. The four "Optic Nervish" stories are longer 15-25 page pieces in the vein of Adrian Tomine, focusing on protagonists living lives of quiet desperation.

In "May 27", the Connie is an ambitious psych student who serves as a pro-bono counselor for smalltime junkie/dealer. The story follows the two characters in the wistful style of Tomine, with the same kind of inconclusive ending. "Tide Pools" is a more effective story about a small-town girl who talks about moving away and never does. Her flirting with a passing grad student is poignant in a sad, desperate way, but other elements don't really work, such as her boyfriend's silent act and the "cubist" party, which feels shoehorned in. "Steven" is the story of a loser with a crush, and although it suffers somewhat from being set in a comic book shop, it's not a bad take on trials of being a "geek". The last and longest story is "The Burial", in which a man in the midst of a divorce heads back to his small hometown for the wedding of his cousin. It's attempting to say something meaningful about forgiveness and the past, but the message never makes it through in any effective way. These longer stories all show glimmers of promise, but on the whole strike one as far too derivative (or merely similar) of Adrian Tomine in both tone and style. None of it is really bad, it's just doesn't seem that original.

3 out of 5 stars Good use of the medium.......2003-02-07

A mixture of light short works and serious stories highlights Mark Murphy's second collection of House of Java. In the first volume, Murphy's strongest story focused on a female protagonist which he developed throughout the story.

Again, the standout story has a strong female lead that guides the story. Jill, a clerk at a comic shop, draws the attention of an eccentric named "Steven." Steven dresses oddly and obsesses over unique things such as old romance comics and black and white films and tv shows. In his own way he is trying to build a relationship with Jill, who truly likes him, but not romatically. When he finally makes a move and she turns him down and she has the opportunity to remark on how men and women deal with friendships and relationships. Murphy does a good job telling the story through the female narrator.

In "May 27th," Murphy focuses on another female character, Connie, a college student who is about to graduate and has an internship working in a prison program. There she works with a repeat drug offender, Ray, who is trying to avoid jail and do something positive with his life. Separately and together, Connie and Ray make small steps to better understand themselves and their place.

"Tide Pools" looks at the relationship between a townie who longs to leave the West Coast tourist trap where she leaves, but can't get up the strength to do so on her own. When an outsider comes to the town to study the local marine biology, she sees her chance to get out, but will she be able to make that decision? Again, Murphy does a good job of showing his characters taking small advances towards change.

The darkest story, "The Burial," is saved for last. While I felt it lacked the emotional punch that Murphy was looking for, it was an ambitious story as Murphy juggled numerous characters and details. In the hands of another writer or with more room in which to work, this could have been a great story.

Although he hasn't entirely abandoned the coffee shop as a setting, there are a only a few short pieces that are played for laughs in this collection. It might be nice if Murphy collected these stories together. While they (and another two pieces called The Paper Route), cleanse the palate for the more serious works contained in the book, a more cohesive tone might also work to his advantage. As it is now, they act more like a one shot that interrupts your favorite comics story-arc.

Perhaps it is because I read this so soon after Adrian Tomine's Summer Blonde, but I felt that the stories and the artwork lacked the maturity that could have elevated this work. As it is, it is still interesting reading and a good use of the medium to expand the stories told to those that develop character over plot.
