Junk Style

For those who have always had--and used--junk, the juxtaposition of the words junk and style is an acknowledgement of what they've always known: useful and attractive objects don't always have to come straight from the furniture showroom. Melanie Molesworth enumerates the ruling principles of Junk Style on the back cover:1. It doesn't have to match.
2. Don't get attached to an object's original function.
3. Use junk as an accent.
4. If you frame it, it's art.
5. White cures all ills.
6. One is an eyesore; five makes a collection!
Though some of the "junk" pictured wouldn't be out of place in an uptown antique shop and the designer practices rule #5 so assiduously that some of the shots call to mind the sterile interior of an idealized World War I-era hospital, practitioners of secondhand chic will still find Junk Style a useful guide. In particular, there's a good range of interiors pictured, from some that look like funky converted garages to the expensively spacious and light-filled. Not too surprisingly, Moleworth's junk looks great in both. --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
Melanie Molesworth shows you how to create an individual look in your home by using discarded objects. Pieces are chosen for their intrinsic beauty, whether derived from quality of workmanship, quirky styling, or the colours and textures created by the patina of age. The look is neither too coordinated nor too precious: things can be mismatched, patched, or frayed.Customer Reviews:

Beautiful photos!.......2001-12-31
With the criticism out of the way, I'd also like to say that Junk Style was very inspriational to me. I read through it twice in the first day that I received it. The photos are gorgeous and some of the finds inside are quite worthy of jealousy. I would recommed this to anyone who enjoys spending time at yard sales, flea markets, and other second hand stores.

A superb and wonderfully grown-up book.......2004-02-17
Every time I revisit this book, and I've done so several times, I'm amazed by just how lovely Albany has made her story of wasted talent (the parents) and a ruined childhood (the author's), without letting her text get bogged down by the very natural emotions of self-pity, fury, sorrow. They're there, but they're not all that's there. There's the joy of music played right, the joy of love - however twisted - expressed fully, the joy the author clearly feels at getting it all down, and getting it down right - even righteously.
This book deserves a thousand times more attention than it's gotten.

Nearly every one of the 500 black-and-white pictures in this book is a miraculous blend of composition and content, placing photographer Elliott Erwitt right up there with the other postwar, 20th-century masters of moment and meaning. Erwitt writes in his introduction, "This is not a book of dog pictures but of dogs in pictures." It is the photograph that counts, above and beyond its subject, for the photographer of genius. But Erwitt is bound to be called a sentimentalist because he photographs dogs, whom we, in our species-centric way, tend to think of as, well, animals. If Erwitt proves anything, however, it is that our close relationship with these furry fellow travelers is due to mutual resemblance. There is a Native American myth that when the world was created, a great fissure began to split the earth. Humans were caught on one side of the chasm, animals on the other. The dog, however, seeing the gap widen, leaped across to the human side, where he has been ever since. This book captures the pleasures of our loyal, dependent friends, as well as their sorrows and disappointment when they are forced to adapt to human callousness, neglect, or even love. Erwitt sees the dignity of the ankle-high Chihuahua; the anxiety of the homeless hound; the smugness of the adored dachshund, sitting on its chaise longue in the noonday sun; the patience of the pom-pommed poodle; and the gormless joy of a homely but well-loved pug. In his vast range of emotion, and in his easygoing but precise mastery of the abstract elements of composition, Elliott Erwitt has made himself the Cartier-Bresson of the canine world. --Peggy MoormanBook Description

Great pictures, with dogs.......2001-07-26
It appears to be wordless; the photographs begin on page one, and there is no text or even a frontispiece before them. If you dig a little, you will find that in fact, buried deep in the middle of this book are two choice bones: an essay, "My Dog Days," by Erwitt, and P. G. Wodehouse's "About My Friends," an appreciation of Elliott Erwitt and of dogs, in Erwitt's words, " easy, uncomplaining targets." Wodehouse traces his own colorful history of dog-owning with warmth and dry humor. Whereas Erwitt writes that "with dogs, as with love affairs, the first and the last are most vivid," Wodehouse seems to vividly remember many more than a couple of dogs.
Wodehouse is convincing, for example, in his assertion that Aberdeen terriers are so "full of the Calvinistic spirit that it is impossible for an ordinary erring human being not to feel ill at ease in their presence." He loves dogs, (some more than others), he doesn't apologize for it, and asks, finally, for "a standing ovation to all dogs," which is precisely what this terrific little book delivers.

Book Description
From acclaimed photographer and famed lover of dogs Elliott Erwitt comes Woof, the most unintentionally persuasive advertisement for dog ownership there ever was. Erwitt's eye is unfailing, and his love for dogs is captured in each and every photo. Digging a hole, barking at a cat, jauntily carrying a stick Erwitt takes these ordinary moments and makes them extraordinary. The humorist P. G. Wodehouse once said of Erwitt, 'There s not a sitter in his gallery that doesn't melt the heart, and no beastly class distinctions, either. Thoroughbreds and mutts, they are all there." Add to that the level of respect Mr. Erwitt shows for his subjects: whether it be a scruffy little terrier pausing for a quick pant or a herding dog intensely focused on her flock, with one click of the shutter the individuality of each and every dog is conveyed and memorialized. Mostly new photographs, with a couple of old favorites sprinkled in for good measure, Woof is a celebration of dogs at their finest.Customer Reviews:

Third in a series of classic "MAD" paperback reprints.......2003-01-26
Among the classic "MAD" parodies reproduced in this volume are "Mickey Rodent," "Howdy Dooit," "Smilin' Melvin," "Mark Trade," "The Katchandhammer Kids," "Bat Boy and Rubin," and "Shermlock Shomes" (figure out how old you are by your ability to figure out what these are parodies off just from the titles). Throughout the book there are ad parodies of "Canadian Specific," "Puntiac," and "Beer Belongs," along with parts of the "Puzzle Page." Be aware that not all of the original material is reproduced faithfully here: "Slow Motion!" originally appeared in a much longer form in "MAD" #21 and now has a different opening pattern. Of course, if you have a chance to check out these "MAD" comics in one of the full-page color reproductions, that would be the preferred avenue of appreciation. But if you remember these original "MAD" paperbacks, then this format may well have nostalgic appeal.
