Book Description

The natural world has been a muse for artists throughout the ages, and jewelry designers have always shared that inspiration, their fascination with flora and fauna coming through in their work. Now, Jeweled Garden traces the evolution of garden-inspired jewelry from the 19th century to the present day in beautiful photographs and an absorbing text.

From Louis Comfort Tiffany's delicate realist creations of the Victorian Age to Cartier's 2006 Caresse d'orchides necklace encrusted with precious stones, the tradition's most beautiful pieces by master jewelers are represented. Featuring pieces from turn-of-the-last-century Art Nouveau, 1920s Art Deco, 1950s and 60s jet-set, and 1970s individualism, from Fabergé, Lalique, Tiffany, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, and even from fashion houses such as Chanel and Christian Dior, this gorgeous volume will delight jewelry aficionados and gardening enthusiasts alike.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book!.......2000-03-22

At long last, an authoritative book on garden ornament in America! Barbara Israel delivers a beautiful tome with scholarly punch in her Antique Garden Ornament: Two Centuries of American Taste. Many books exist on gardens and landscape history, but none addresses the issue of the statues, fountains, and furniture used within them with such depth and clarity as Ms. Israel. In addition to the chapters themselves, the catalogue of objects in the back of the book and the list of makers provide a greatly needed reference for this growing field. I highly recommend this book.

This book is ideal for the would-be woodworker who has the desire, but may not have the know-how or experience, to build simple, attractive outdoor furniture and garden accessories. Using the step-by-step plans and measurements, anyone willing to work with a hammer and saw can use inexpensive lumber to build some downright elegant chairs, mailboxes, birdhouses, stools, tables, a lattice bower, a potting bench, a planter, a loveseat, and many, many more items. Before launching into the individual projects, the author starts with the basics of materials and supplies, tools, techniques and safety tips; explains how to choose wood for the projects; lays out lumber dimensions and grades; interprets the differences between finishes and stains; describes the different fasteners and screws used in any of the prescribed projects; and gives the reader useful tips on cutting and sanding techniques, along with sound advice on safety needed for any woodworking project.

This is a "can-do" book that will encourage beginners to build finished outdoor furniture and fixtures of simple but pleasing design and solid functionality, and there is nothing to stop an enthusiastic woodworker from embellishing, enhancing, or customizing any of these projects to suit individual taste or fantasies. --Mark A. Hetts

5 out of 5 stars Great Beginner Book.......2001-08-11

I bought this book for my husband who had no experience with building furniture and little experience with power tools. He has made every project in this book, and several from other "2x4" books with terrific results. The instructions are simple and clear and everything has turned out as pictured. I have recommended this book to everyone who admires our patio furniture and is surprised to hear it's home-made. We have even added decorative painting to some pieces and given them as gifts. Anyone who has taken junior high shop class could handle these projects.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for a beginner.......1999-07-12

I took my first furniture/carpentry class at the local community college and built the garden sofa pictured on the front cover. I'm a woman and had never tried such a project. The instructions and pictures were terrific and my completed project now has a place of honor in my garden. I highly recommend this book if you're a beginner.

          3 out of 5 stars Novices beware!.......1999-06-29

Upon beginning my first project from this book, I was taken aback at the number of mislabelings, wrong dimensions, incorrect drawings and unclear (or downright confusing) instructions. Since this book is meant to appeal to woodworkers with little or no previous experience, it surprises me that so much misinformation found its way into print. A second, corrected, edition could make this flawed first effort into a truly useful resource.

Pink flamingos, elves and gnomes, whirligigs, windmills and wishing wells, ceramic geese and plastic ducks, oh my! Sophisticated lawn and garden magazines might pretend (or prefer) such anomalies don't exist, but this seasoned author/photographer team knows better. Their research has revealed that, from coast to coast, countless Americans have a love and a penchant for decorating their yards with gizmos that turn the hair of professional landscapers white. This is the vividly illustrated story of America's most garish gardens and lawns and the individualistic group of nationwide yard enthusiasts who invent and maintain them. This book is for those who recognize themselves in its pages. More importantly, writes M.B. Roberts, "It's also for the compulsive lawn-edgers like myself who wouldn't dare drive the metal legs of a pink flamingo into the lawn, but delight in those who do."

Pink flamingos, elves & gnomes, ceramic geese & plastic ducks, oh my! Americans, from coast to coast, have a penchant for decorating their yards with gizmos & gadgets that please & tease. Modra & Roberts started across the nation & recorded many of Amwerica's more eccentric gardens. This is a charming little book, impish, ironic & crass. What kind of people place metal cut-out characters at various points on their lawns so they appear to be having a conversation? Who lives in a house by a lake where the front & back yards are carpeted with animal statues, old mailboxes & year-round Christmas decorations? Who is the Pink Flamingo King? END

2 out of 5 stars Kind of fun, but ultimately disappointing.......1999-05-18

I expected a lot more from this book than I got. I myself have seen much weirder lawns than are included in this book. It sometimes appears to be more of a comment on class-driven levels of taste than on personal weirdness and eccentricity, and I didn't like that. Interesting to browse, but not worth the price, in my opinion. For this type of book, "Weird Rooms" is much better.

4 out of 5 stars WILDLY HUMOROUS, AN UNEXPECTED TREASURE BOOK.......1998-07-21

I EXPECTED IT TO BE FUNNY BUT THE STORIES WERE A REAL SUPRISE. THE TEXAS TORNADO, THE MAN WITH THE BEDS WERE MY FAVORITE. THIS BOOK WOULD BE A GREAT PRESENT FOR ANYONE STARTING THEIR OWN GARDEN.

            Book Description

Passion is one of the most important elements in a masterful work of art. Without it, a painting is a lifeless collection of composition and technique. Here, internationally respected watercolorist Alvaro Castagnet shows artists how to paint from their heart--capturing more than just subjects, but the thoughts, feelings and emotions that give them impact.

            Detailed demonstrations show how to:
            * create passion through a perfect marriage of tonal values
            * inject mystery and drama by manipulating shadows
            * use color to express powerful emotion
            * simplify a scene to better express the artist's feelings for the subject
            * set a mood, create rhythm, and ultimately achieve perfect unity

Through it all, artists will take their passion for painting--and personal satisfaction from their work--to a higher plateau.

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars All fluff no substance.......2005-12-03

This is not an instructional book. It pretty much just showcases the artist's work. If you want to buy useful reference books on watercolor, get books by Joseph Zbukvic and/or Robert Wade. They are exceptional painters and teachers. Their books are filled with gorgeous artwork and useful information for artists of all levels.

3 out of 5 stars More inspiration than perspiration.......2004-11-19

This book has value in inspiring intermediate and advanced students of traditional painting to define their own approaches to the creative process. This is not a book for beginning watercolorists, but then there are many other books intended to serve that purpose. In 128 pages, there are only about 7 paintings for which the painting process is shown from initial drawing to completed painting. The rest of the many painting illustrations are accompanied by anecdotes about the circumstances surrounding the creation of each painting. There is some analysis of what the artist intended for each painting in terms of composition, tonal values, use of color, etc. Castagnet also provides a lot of general commentary about his approach to various aspects of traditional painting or--as some might call it--illustration. Castagnet is a very talented watercolorist, similar to many of his best Australian contemporaries, with some signature use of texture and saturated color that sometimes borders on expressionism. Most of Castagnet's paintings are of city and seaport scenes, so the variety of subjects is limited. His paintings of interiors may be his most distinctive; I wish there were more examples of them. It's a pity that the artist has limited his subject matter to such a great extent. The inclusion of more figure studies, and perhaps even some comparatively abstract paintings, might have resulted in a more interestingly varied book.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Watercolour !.......2003-07-10

Alvaro's style is exhuberent and fun just like his personality. I painted with him on a painting trip through Europe - he is fantastic to watch, and unique in his style- the book really captures his painting and brings back great memories of his painting style. It's the next best thing to a lesson with him. (well maybe better - it's easier to remember when you get home). He is more colourful and perhaps emotive than your usual watercolourist. Buy it. I am a biased Aussie - who thinks we have some fantastic watercolourists. Also Check out David Taylor, Robert Wade... And if go to Europe with them. Painting in the streets with them is a wonderful unforgettable experience.

            5 out of 5 stars Great paintings.......2003-01-02

Castagnet's style and draftsmanship are enormously attractive. He paints bold, bright free watercolors that start with excellent drawing. Most of the paintings in this well-illustrated book are of city scenes. I recommend the book for anyone interested in a loose and fresh approach to watercolor.
However, this is NOT a book to consider in order to learn techniques and methods. There are zillions of "how to" books about watercolor technique. Get this book to enjoy strong fresh well-drawn paintings.

3 out of 5 stars Passion Yes, Teaching No.......2001-06-24

I bought this book because I loved the cover and anticipated some directional advice on how to paint this type of city scene. The book has wonderful photos of Castagnet's painting with lots of verbage about the feelings and emotions that he wanted to portray but clearly he did not want to share his techniques to arrive there. There are VERY few demonstrations and, unfortunately, they are lacking in true teaching commentary. It has been very hard to me to follow and try to reproduce anything from the demonstrations. He seems to leave out a lot of the instructions, colors and steps. I can feel his PASSION in each of the paintings included in the book and, therefore, can recommend this book as a resource for ideas not instruction. I believe that this book should have been produced as a table top book rather than an teaching book.

5 out of 5 stars Well researched and concise.......2000-01-01

Mr. Sartorius has produced a concise and easy to read book. He has made a reasonable attempt to categorise the lenses in a logical and well-illstrated manner. The book largely succeeds at the difficult task of covering the myriad variations of Leica lenses, especially the screw-mount and early M-mount lenses. Book Description

Enter a dark, gothic land of elvin assassins, mythic demons and dangerous women. In the world of Amrahlynn, magic is a constant and science has yet to gain a foothold on civilization. Roaming through this hazardous land is a misanthropic elf named Lusiphur. A wanderer without allegiances, Lusiphur (no relation to the guy down below) encounters demon-summoning wizards, bumbling thieves, serial killers, purple-festooned misogynists, and plenty of shallow love interests. This series of books, which collects one of the biggest cult-favorite comics of the 90s, is perfect for any fan of gothic fantasy or vampires.

5 out of 5 stars This started it all!.......2003-06-30

If you're looking at getting a copy of Poison Elves: Requiem for an Elf because you're only familiar with Drew's comics at Sirius, than definitely buy this book. If you're looking to replace your copy that you've read time and time again until it was in nothing but tatters, I don't need to convince you, but for everyone else out there, you just have to own a copy of this book.

Poison Elves follows the story of Lusiphur Amerellis Malache, a raven-haired elf that grew up on the streets. From an early age he learned how to fight, steal, and kill just to survive. Now 19 in elf years, or roughly 133 in human years, he's on the run from the law yet again.

This graphic reprints the first six issues of I, Lusiphur which was Poison Elves original name. The first two comics are redone in prose form in this graphic. Don't skip over them. Drew is great with his prose and there's all sorts of good stuff in there.

In Issue One and Two Lusiphur meets a villainous necromancer that captures the Elf, and ripps out Lusiphur's eye in order to raise the demon Six-Tell Amalah. Luse escapes and goes to the healer Lirilith, a beautiful elf that is his best friend, and she manages to heal him in just in time, because someone has to die, either Six-Tell Amalah or Lusiphur and the demon is immortal....

In book three Lusiphur is injured once more, and is crawling through the woods when a kindly old man takes him in and helps him heal. But nothing is as it ever appears in the Poison Elves world...

In book 4 we first meet the blond elf Jace, or Jason. Pay attention to his cameo, he'll play a very important role later. This is also the first appearance of the Purple Marauder. He's far and away one of the best villains ever. You'll see what I mean

Book 5 and 6 has Luce stealing a very powerful gem, not because he wants to, but because of a life debt years and years old...

If you like you comics edgy, and filled with action, black comedy, and a kickin' good time than stop reading this and buy the book!

4 out of 5 stars dark humor; rough but biting.......2001-07-27

I loved this comic. I found it an absolute hoot, and would whole-heartedly recommend it. However, it's dark humor and somewhat rough presentation might not be to everyone's taste. Not sure? Here's a simple test. Rent Mel Gibson's 'Payback.' If you find yourself cracking up periodically, unable to explain your hilarity to any confused companions, I don't doubt that you will adore Poison Elves.

            4 out of 5 stars PE beginnings..........2000-09-01

This reprint of Drew Hayes' oringinal Mulehide Graphics Poison Elves series is quite well done. While those who are only familiar with his later works would see the trade paper back as crude and not well practiced, others will definately relish in all the history it has to offer. The later comics do hint at what is contained in the earlier issues, but it is best to read it here and get all the details in full black and white. Further, it is always enjoyable to see where a favorite comic started and how it has evolved to what it is today. That is probablly what makes this book most enjoyable.
