The catalogue for the National Design Triennal at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum is an elegant distillation for those who cannot make it to New York before January 25, and includes essays by its four curators. The theme, in every aspect of design, from furniture to graphics, lighting to fashion, is pluralism. Standouts include Yusuke Obuchi's Wave Garden-a poetic alternate energy generator that rewards frugal consumers by becoming a maritime park at weekends; Loyand Ford's deconstructed clothes; and Stephen Wolfram's graphic portrayal of simplicity generating complexity-an inquiry that might, one day, summarize the workings of the universe in a few lines of code. Look, Read, Think.......2003-07-23

If you can't make it to New York to see the actual Triennial show at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, then this book is your best bet for a provocative survey of contemporary design. This is particularly true if you think of design as a big idea connecting print, interaction, motion, products, architecture and environments. You'll find a good balance of critical writing with images in this book. So it is something both to look at and to read and think about.

Great instruction book on drawing Caricatures.......2007-05-22

This book is indeed an 'instruction' book on caricaturing. The author teaches drawing 'eyes', 'noses', & mouths and has step by step projects to help the beginner combine the elements into a drawing. Three heads are better than one in this case because the three authors, working together, did a better job than one author, alone, could have done in creating this book. The authors don't, in my oppinion, have the best talent for drawing great caricatures like some other author's works that I've seen. Their ability to take the focus off of themselves and help the student came through in the creation of this book.

The cover of this book caught my eye as an artist just mustering the bravery to paint people. The suggestions of human movement, without minute, photo-like details, suggested the book was a super way to start incorporating people into one's paintings. Simple strokes suggest people and their activities.

However, the book does even more than that. It discusses and illustrates how bodily proportions vary at different ages, provides samples of people in various cultural dress, and even discusses facial shadows, etc.

For the beginner people watercolorist -- this book may be all they will need to achieve results that are satisfying and vital.

Having stumbled upon this book quite by accident, I was thrilled to find that the clear format, easily followed instructions, and wonderful graphics resulted in instant improvement of my watercolour portraits. There are suggestions about layers of color, highlighting, organizing your image, to name a few, that will add life and dimension to your work quickly and easily. This book will be a welcome addition to any reference library that a watercolor portrait artist is compiling.

George Lepp knows nature photography. As the tech guru for OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHER magazine and the editor of THE NATURAL IMAGE, he is also a skilled communicator. For those who know their way around a camera and understand the basics, this book is an excellent reference for going out and doing something photographically unique. Lepp's writing style is clear and his photographic illustrations are excellent. Want to try acquarium photography? Photograph mammals in the field? Work with controlled animals? Do something unique with photographic design elements? Try aerial landscapes? Learn how to photograph flying birds? Or make the most of fall colors? All this and more is here. After exploring the excellent techniques in this book, you can try your hand at more great photo topics in Lepp's first volume. The chapters stand independently of each other, so you can read them in any order, or read volume two before the original volume. The same clear teaching techniques that come across in Lepp's seminars and workshops are also in both of these books. Highly recommended.

The Voice of the Past.......2007-03-17

Even though this book has been around since 1993, which in terms of modern photography, seems almost forever, one often still sees it as a reference for nature photographers. As a nature photographer, I wondered if there was anything in it that I hadn't heard elsewhere. Veteran photographers will recognize Lepp as a monthly columnist for "Outdoor Photographer" magazine. Although his reputation is built in part on his technical expertise, his vision and compositional skills are also amongst the best, and the photographs that he includes to illustrate his points are still top-notch.

Even though there is no reference to digital photography here, most of Lepp's ideas have just as much application to the new technology and indeed some may even be easier to apply today. The book is not a beginning to ending guide to outdoor photography. In fact, for some of the points raised by the author, one may already have to have most of the fundamentals down pat. Although the chapters are occasionally linked together, each chapter generally stands on its own dealing with a particular subject. There are chapters dealing with macro-photography, including the use of electronic flash, photographing butterflies, flowers, birds at the nest, captive animals and the use of telephoto and wide angle lenses in landscape photography. There is little of the technical detail found in a book like John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide" or what I consider its modern digital supplement, Rob Sheppards "The Magic of Digital Nature Photography". Rather there is a broad discussion of concepts.

Consider the chapter on multiple electronic TTL photography. I had never considered using more than one flash when photographing flowers indoors. Based on Lepp's general ideas I was able to rig up two flashguns to my camera and shoot with them more effectively on a recent trip to the local botanic garden. On the other hand I was able to successfully use one flash as a main and another as fill because of my experience using multiple flashes for portrait photography. However, I wished that I had followed Lepp's advice on cross-polarized lighting. I had never heard of this technique before and it would certainly have helped with some of the specular highlights I created.

This is not a book you need to add to your library to be an effective photographer, primarily because most of the subject matter has been written about in more detail elsewhere, and because newer techniques have come into being. On the other hand, if you come on a copy of the book, it probably will be worth the time you spend reading it, particularly when something from the past proves useful to you today.

Going Beyond the Ordinary in Nature Photography.......2000-09-28

After exploring the excellent topics in this book, you can try your hand at more great photo techniques in volume two. The same clear teaching techniques that come across in Lepp's seminars and workshops are also in both of these books. Highly recommended.
