4 out of 5 stars THE OLD SQUARE.......2006-11-01

This book is full of fantastic old black and white images and thoroughly interesting text. The French Quarter is one of America's treasures and anyone with any interest at all in this famous old district should have this book in their collection. Thank God, the Quarter is on high ground and the buildings so well built, God willing, it will survive another milinium, much like the city it inhabits.

5 out of 5 stars French Quarter Manual: An Architectural Guide to New Orleans.......2000-01-05

As a part-time resident of the Vieux Carre, and one who very reluctantly leaves to return to New York, I keep this book in my New York home to look through when I long for New Orleans. This book, with its elegant balck and white historic photos and its vivid descriptive text, captures the best of the Vieux Carre. In fact, I have had great fun trying to match the historic photos to the contemporary Vieux Carre sites on my visits to the Quarter.

I love this book, it's a wonderful gift to anyone who loves that amazing and magical place known as the Vieux Carre.

5 out of 5 stars A must for preservationists and architectural historians.......1998-03-19

Tender in prose, painstaking in research, passionate in creation. A worthy addition to any architectural library.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic. A joy to look at and to read.......1999-06-10

This book consists of a number of fascinating photos drawn from the world of science. The pictures are works of art in themselves, and include a simple scale indicator to give you a clue whether what you're looking at is microscopic or full sized. The accompanying prose explains in a short description what you're looking at and why it's so interesting. The prose is brilliantly written and easy to read.

This book is not for scientists per se, but for anyone with a fascination for the world around them. A perfect accent to any coffee table.

4 out of 5 stars Great photography book !.......1998-10-11

This is not a science book ! The photos are really great, but the name fooled me...it is not a book on surface science ! Just a photography book that have some phothos that were taken with the help of scientific media.....

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing pictures and understandable explanations.......1998-03-31

As a student in Material Science and Engineering, I couldn't resist when I heard of this book, and I was not disappointed. Mrs. Frankel's photography is beautiful and illustrative without losing an artful touch as far as composition is concerned, and Mr. Whitesides' explanations can be easily grasped due to their intuitive approach. For someone who wants to know more about the science behind the effects the explanations may not be detailed enough, which is why I don't rate this book a ten, but whoever desires to gain an overview of surface effects and understand the basics of it, this is the book to read. I sincerely recommend this book.

Product Description

Archaeology, goats and dogs, honor, ethics, lies and betrayals are part and parcel of all that happens when two cultures abrade. When a young American archaeologist runs from his impending marriage and secure future, and finds himself in the traditional world of a Cretan village, he is forced to confront the feelings he has avoided all his life: rage, fear, envy, and shame, as he becomes the central pawn in a vicious family vendetta. During World War II, the village suffered terrible reprisals at the hands of the Nazis. The present day priest is the grandson of the priest at that time. He works to heal the deep wounds remaining from the war. Love, loyalty, power, and death all pass through the days of the story as it unfolds across the face of western Crete.

5 out of 5 stars The Pale Surface of Things.......2007-09-25

This was a special book - one I will read again. Since I have been to Athens and other islands in Greece, it brought back a lot of memories, and hopes to visit Crete some day. The story kept your interest in many ways. The characters were very interesting and because there were several sub plots, that came together in the end, made the book hard to put down. I wish it had been longer! I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars An absorbing novel, difficult to put down........2007-09-06

The debut novel of the multitalented, modern Renaissance woman Janey Bennett, The Pale Surface of Things is a dark story of archaeology, lies, betrayal, and murder, set in a crucible between two cultures. When an American archaeologist flees his forthcoming marriage and cozy future, he runs to the traditional world of a Cretan village... where he must confront all the anger, fear, envy and shame within himself. He becomes entangled within an utterly ruthless family vendetta. Years ago, in World War II, the village suffered horrifically at the hands of the Nazis; today, its present-day priest labors to heal the lingering wounds from that time. Ultimately a story about maturing and developing the strength to confront both internal and external demons, The Pale Surface of Things is an absorbing novel, difficult to put down.

5 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment!.......2007-08-31

I love the rich character development in this story. It was a great summer read. This book made me feel so "there" that I was all ready to pack up and take a vacation in Crete! I was not able to put down this book after I got into it. I even woke up early one morning to finish it--and I hate waking up early! It's a great book.

5 out of 5 stars 'No Man Is An Island'.......2007-08-03

Janey Bennett makes a startlingly fine debut as a novelist with THE PALE SURFACE OF THINGS. Not only is Bennett able to conjure a fascinating story of many complexities and intertwining plots, she is able to place her story on the island of Crete in such an assured manner that her gift for research and exploration of a certain place leads us to wonder if Crete is her home! In florid prose, exacting attention to details of each of the several plots, and in her ability to bring the reader into the realm of Crete with all of its idiosyncrasies and history and charm Bennett creates a propulsive novel that is a most satisfying read on many levels.

Bennett wisely places American characters with Cretan peoples and inserts as a common ground the presence of a priest who was born on Crete and studied in the US: the result is a flawless mix of language and concepts from both the familiar with the unfamiliar. Douglas is a young man without self direction who goes to Crete at the expense of his adopted family, the Hansons, to study Minoan Archeology and to marry the Hanson's daughter Denise. In a brilliant opening chapter Douglas is fleeing the wedding day ritual and beginning an Odyssey that will change his life. As an 'ex-patriot' of sorts Douglas encounters the friendship of Father Dimitrios who lives a celibate life tending to his villagers and restoring a war-damaged wall of art in his church, meets a young lad Aleko whose warmth and familial invitations stun the now penniless Douglas, and enters the `interior' of Crete on a fascinating journey. In a series of events so rapid fire they feel like explosions, Douglas and Aleko share experiences that test the durability of family codes and tragedies, place Douglas in jeopardy, and ultimately lead him (with the guidance of Father Dimitrios) to an understanding of himself and an acceptance of his place in the universe. '...what people take for being good is just being brave and doing it alone.'

Bennett offers many subplots that explore the presence of the Nazis on Crete in WW II, the history of a family that has been challenged by misunderstandings and vendettas, the manner in which the Hanson family finds greater happiness and worth because of the daring ending of a haughty wedding ceremony, the ways in which youth of Crete learn maturity, and copious sidebars regarding archeology, history, art restoration, Cretan foods and traditions, and the beauty of the simplicity of life on an isolated island. Crete, in so many ways, is the main character in the novel, and Bennett knows her way around her stage as well as anyone who writes. THE PALE SURFACE OF THINGS is a solid, intoxicating novel that gently reminds the reader of the importance of philosophical issues and the way they mold lives. It is a smart, entertaining, superb novel! Grady Harp, August 07

5 out of 5 stars Excavating Pale Surfaces.......2007-07-30

I just emerged from the Pale Surface of Things. This is my first Amazon review, but I couldn't help myself. As an art conservator with years of experience on excavations in the Mediterranean, I made a direct connection with the author's analogy of revealing personal history by slowly peeling away old layers of whitewash from wall paintings. The book has a wonderful structure. I was taken into the world of the main character and the people he met on Crete, as they dug below surfaces and witnessed changed. The gentle tale of discovery told by Janey Bennett captured my imagination and fueled my desire for another Greek island adventure.

    Product Description

In this book Children of the Universe, scientific journalist Hoimar Von Ditfurth looks at man's place in a universe filled with unknowns. This German's enthusiasm for the cosmos was equaled only by the late Carl Sagan of the United States. Von Ditfurth has undertaken the task of teaching man how to be amazed again. He believes that Western man has been disillusioned ever since the days of Copernicus when that great astronomer revealed that the earth was not the center of the universe. But recent discoveries in astronomy, physics, biology, paleontology, and geology show that a complex web joins us with our planet, our solar system, our galaxy, and with our universe. Unlike many books that tell people there is life elsewhere just because there is or should be, this book makes its point by understating the drama, and instead, showing and describing what is out in space. The book contains an excellent section of black and white photopgrahs, showing globular clusters found in our own Milky Way galaxy, tektites from around the world, comets, sun spots, and more. Von Ditfurth describes how the Earth periodically lost its magnetic shield during violent cosmic collisions between the earth and gigantic meteors weighing hundreds of millions of tons. If this happened in the past, could it happen in the future? Are these the cataclysmic tragedies the abductees are telling us? Von Ditfurth also describes human sexuality in terms of evolution and Nature's desire to continue its species. He talks about the human internal clock and how travelers flying from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere do not experience jet lag. This book was first published in the 1970s and is a classic sure to enhance any collection.

From the supplier: The 340 Metropolitan Planning Organizations in the US are faced with dramatic changes that have altered the political framework within which they work and forced them to redefine their responsibilities. The changes are largely attributable to the Intermodal Surface Transport Efficiency Act of 1991, which together with the Clean Air Act amendments increased expectations that how decisions are made on a regional level would change.

The four-volume “Science of Everyday Things” set illustrates the importance of scientific and mathematical principles through their use in everyday life. Each volume focuses on a specific scientific discipline — biology, chemistry, earth sciences and physics — offering an in-depth understanding of each discipline and its theories, creating a sense of real-life relevance for students and those not scientifically-inclined, and including interesting facts and details relating to each principle. The fascinating entries offer explanations of concepts using a straightforward, step-by-step approach, and present theories in their everyday applications. Some examples of the entries covered include how osmosis is used in dehydrating fruit; Charles' law and the chemical reaction that sets off an airbag; and how algorithms are used to figure out the NCAA playoff tournaments.

                    Book Description

David Collier begins his journal when he trades in the isolated and wind-swept prairie city of Saskatoon for Hamilton. For an artist it’s a land of opportunity. And the ink in his pen doesn`t freeze outside in winter any more! But Collier discovers that he has more worries. He is a father and a husband and the urban lifestyles he captures on his sketchpads make him feel more remote as an artist then he did on the prairies. The sketchbooks were supposed to document and affirm his new life! Instead their pages become a space where his anxieties wrestle with his desire for a home.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating letdown.......2005-09-22

I had read Collier's earlier narrative works, JUST THE FACTS and PORTRAITS FROM LIFE. They are wonderful collections of visual essays.

I was looking forward to reading THE HAMILTON SKETCHBOOKS as well. I was surprised. This was exactly what it said it was. A sketchbook. And, although the art is endearlingly clumsy and I laughed for days over one of the pictures, I was a little disappointed that he did not return to the essay form.

It seems, with the publishing of the follow up to this book, THE FRANK RITZA PAPERS, a combination of one essay and another series of sketches, that Collier is at a crossroads. He seems to have become more fascinated with the anecdotal story and less with the narrative. Which is a nice thing, both books still have his reserved self-effacing Canadian sensibility, but all the same, he is so good at the narrative that I hope he returns to it.

Regardless, I am looking forward to his next Drawn & Quarterly publication, whatever it might be.
