Ever since his wildly dramatic Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, opened in 1997, Frank Gehry has been widely and justifiably considered the leading architect of our time. Although this ascension occurred seemingly overnight, it actually took more than half a century, counting architecture school and work in eight other offices before he opened his own firm in 1962. Since then, Gehry's designs have become increasingly freer and more inventive. He first explored existing design approaches such as Frank Lloyd Wright's, Southern California vernacular, minimalist modernism, and Miesian structuralism before blazing his own trail. This included corrugated cardboard furniture, chain-link fencing, unfinished metal siding, exposed wood studs, and other "cheapskate" materials; skewed geometries; and a recurring preoccupation with fishlike building forms. He learned to fragment buildings into discrete components (often making each room a structure unto itself), experiment with color, create forced perspectives, and, above all, bring natural light indoors masterfully. His recent designs tend to be baroque and romantic in ways never before seen, often resembling sails or abstracted flowers. Gehry's architecture is an art that involves great risk taking, and while not every design succeeds fully, his courage is exemplary and his batting average is surprisingly high.

For readers who truly want to know about Gehry, The Complete Works is indispensable. It documents 250 works, even early ones that other architects might conveniently omit, and the material is well illustrated on 614 oversized pages. Insightful essays by two eminent architectural scholars set the stage for this massive and unrivaled traversal of Gehry's designs. --John Pastier

Book Description

This monograph is one of the most complete and visually attractive publications on world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, presenting 243 of his buildings and projects. Gehry's provocative works of architecture are constructed through a unique process of improvisation and display extreme creative freedom, which allows him to work without preconceptions, and with an extraordinarily open mind. This volume traces Gehry's career and creative development and includes all of his most significant works, from his senior thesis at the University of Southern California (1954) to a projected skyscraper in New York City (1997). Included are such high-profile projects as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Loyola Law School, and the California Aerospace Museum in Los Angeles; the Nationale-Nederlanden office building in Prague; and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

5 out of 5 stars amazing new perspective.......2002-03-12

i did not have a good impression of gehry until i got this book. i got it because i had to know what this guy is thinking when he comes up with what i thought was "ugly" stuff (i now feel ashamed to admit that). now i see the beauty of his work.
my eyes have been opened. i now have a greater respect for what he is doing.
the photography is amazing...the book provides sketches and insight into what gehry is trying to do.
must have for architectural students/interns

5 out of 5 stars Frank O. Gehry:The Complete Works by Francesco Dal Co, et al.......2001-08-15

Architecture is my first love although I am a Art History Major. So without any dobt I knew this publication would be right up my ally. To say the least I was not dissappointed. A brief, illustrated synopsis was given on all projects right up to the current "Music Experience" extravaganza. One point I found of particular interest was that in most of the Bios it gave the Budget that Gehry had to work in. It is a massive book and printed on top quality stock. One that will last a lifetime in my Library. It is a book worthy of any one interested in cutting edge design. Although alot of the projects are in Europe as they seem to be more accepting of his progressive designs the commissioned works in America are just as fine. I can only anticipate the "New Guggenheim"in New York.

5 out of 5 stars The Master Gehry.......2001-05-26

This book represents all what Frank Gehry is. With beautiful photos and good texts, you can know all work of this that's one of the best architets of actuality. Frank Gehry's Complete Works must be bought and read, it's like a bible of desconstrutivism architetury. The price is wonderfull and the quality too. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Number one in quality and quantity!.......2000-07-26

This is a book to people who have a bad idea of gehry work, like i had, because is amazing how the author made an retrospective of gehry work with so much quality and quantity work. And remember, this book is really "cheap" because is very good. IN MY OPINION, JUST BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars A really good book for architects and everyone!.......2000-04-22

I like how this book shows how Gehry's architecture progressed from his Senior Thesis Project to his recent works. It's interesting how simple his architecture once was, to how much more complex it is now. Buy this book, you will always enjoy it.

    Book Description

Before MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, Hall and Nordhoff wrote this nonfiction book about the South Seas islands. All of the islands described lie in the Paumotu, Society and Hervey Groups. A super early 20th century look at Paradise!

I agree with Gerardo... This book will give you unvarnished observations from new visitors to the south east Pacific immediately after WWI. The descrptions of Hall's visit to the Paumotus (Tuamotus) are really priceless today, as is his account of Hotel Tiare and Lavaina, before her death. If you enjoy this, then see if you can get a copy of My Island Home. The island parts are very good (especially Singh, A Song of Six Pence). Also read The Forgotten One, and Other Stories, a darker look at the affects and outcomes of caucasians in the islands.

4 out of 5 stars A must for those interested in the South Seas.......2001-05-27

In this book, the authors make what seems to be an autobiographical account of a year of traveling and adventure throughout the South Seas. They decide to travel in different directions and meet again after a few months. They write in turn about their own experiences and stories as narrated to them by other characters, covering a wide range of stories, from the mere description of island's habits, to beautiful native stories, to what must be the most thrilling and yet poetic treasure hunt I have read. Possibly a slightly minor work from this authors, better known for the Bounty books. Yet, if you like the mystery of the South Seas a little more than its adventure, add that fifth star to my rating. Please bear in mind my comments are based on a first edition of this book, dated 1921, which I own. I write the review in the hope that it will be useful since there is none to date, but I have not actually read this new edition.

The topics covered are many but the depth is zero and the examples are about 90% too short. It doesn't really help to get a picture and a solution without intermediate steps or even halfhearted explanation. This book is completely inaccessible to a student and will sit useless on the shelf as $130 bucks wasted. Disgusting.

1 out of 5 stars This is the worst textboook I have ever read.......2006-10-17

This is literally the most useless text book I have ever encountered (and I really thought I had read the worst). It is COMPLETELY USELESS.It doesnt explain basic concepts and examples skip mutliple steps on their way to the solution. And by multiple I mean I cant follow them at all. Please, if you are a teacher, DO NOT use this book to teach Junior Meche's. Everyone in my class thinks this book sucks!

1 out of 5 stars NOT FOR A INTRO COURSE.......2006-09-06

Posibly the worst textbook i have ever encountered. Not enough examples, Limited explinations not suited for a introductory course. It's hard to imagine a publisher would have continued printing this to a 5th ed.

1 out of 5 stars Hard for students and TAs.......2006-08-13

When I took this class I was utterly confused by most of the material and some of the problems made no sense whatsoever, neither the set up nor the solution. When I TA'ed the class, luckily the professor worked mainly out of a course erader made of his own notes. The bad part was he picked problems out of this book for homework. Many of the solutions are quite simple, WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM CORRECTLY, a task this book left completely up to me to explain to the students. Also, a few solutions were just plain wrong or required huge simplifications and assumptions that were not intuitive.
If you have to buy this book, buy the cheapest copy out there or just photocopy the few pages you'll need.
Also, where the h*ll do they get the nerve to charge so much for such a short useless book. It's a fifth edition that doesn't show much care or thought put into it.
This book is typical of what's wrong in the textbook publishing industry, we students are overcharged for garbage and required to buy the newest edition of content that hasn't changed in a hundred years. It's almost as if we're paying professors for plagiarizing classical theory!
I strongly recommend going elsewhere to LEARN the concepts of mechanical vibrations.

                        3 out of 5 stars So so..........2006-01-29

The reading is alright. The chapters are short but the examples are confusing, most of the steps are cut out leaving the reader to figure out what was done. I wouldn't recommend this book if someone is really trying to learn vibrations.

This book, the first of several from Tennant, was published in 1992, so it deals with a lot of computing issues before the widespread onset of Windows the WWW. I hadn't yet tapped into my inner geek at that time, but for admins and others who fondly remember the days of LANs, early network maintenance, "killer apps" and a host of other topics, this is for you. You can do a lot with one panel of comic space. Great for one-off photocopies to post up on the outside of your server, etc.

Rich Tennant has created a Far Side type collection of cartoons set around an office especially computers. Although Tennant copied Larson's style he could not duplicate either his quality or humour. In fact I did not find one cartoon in this entire collection funny. Don't waste your money, buy a Far Side book instead.

I bought this for my techie husband and he found some of the cartoons to be so-so and others he laughed hystericaly at.

Ah, yes, cartoons with fantasy elements - testing a new network admin with a snakepit; preparing for the MSCE exam by working a Rubix cube underwater without an airhose; providing morphine drips for system upgrades. No relationship to reality at all. :)

This book has no introduction, afterward, or anything except various strips of _The Fifth Wave_, probably familiar to more readers as the cartoons appearing in the For Dummies books than as ComputerWorld magazine's most popular feature. :) Some of the strips have previously appeared in various For Dummies books, but since there are more than 200 strips in this book, that shouldn't be a problem.

The strips cover all sorts of 'technical' topics, from using a snake charmer to try to retrieve a lost file to 'Linux poker'. ("Everyone gets to see everyone else's cards, everything's wild, you can play off your opponents' ands, and everyone wins except Bill Gates, whose face appears on the Jokers.") Tarzan, Lord of the Web makes a couple of appearances ("Lord of the Jungle - where future in that?"), although Buddy Diskk, Computer Comedian does not. (Tennant doesn't even need to crack many AOL jokes, let alone use a comedian character.) We have a few visits to MousePad Land.

Lots of these strips feature kids, especially kids in school and the teachers coping with them, from the teacher who failed an algebra student but liked the kid's animated equations to the teacher who assigned the kids to search for discount vacation airfares. Parents get their fair share too: the couple concerned that their kid can't hot-key from app to app as well as the other kids; the parent who won't buy an ISDN line; the father who installed a vibrating pager in the kids' bunks; the dad who pepped up his ghost stories with multimedia. Some of the kids run roadside stands selling internet access, while others call 911 while the rest of the family is trapped in a computer-game dungeon.

Some non-techie topics are included too, such as the security-conscious 'cube farm' with guards on horseback; experimental alternatives to pie charts; using a wild rhino to test the disaster recovery plan; and people who think 'working with the kernel all day' involves KFC.
