Book Description
This extraordinary book presents thirty-eight of the most renowned and significant buildings of America's premier architect, from his early Prairie work in Oak Park, Illinois, in the 1890s to his daring creations of the 1940s and 1950s.
In entirely new photographs taken especially for this book by two leading architectural photographers under the direction of co-editor David Larkin, such internationally famous buildings as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Fallingwater and Wright's homes Taliesin, Taliesin West, and the Oak Park Home and Studio are seen afresh, benefiting from the photographers' special access.
Several lesser-known residences, such as Auldbrass Plantation in South Carolina, an array of wooden buildings that is Wright's American alternative to antebellum architecture, the William H. Winslow house in River Forest, Illinois, one of the architect's earliest and most surprisingly decorative houses, and the Kenneth Laurent house in Rockford, Illinois, a masterful curvilinear design, are seen in full color and demonstrate dimensions of Wright's work less often seen before. Public buildings, such as the dramatic concrete, glass, and steel Marin County Civic Center and Beth Sholom Synagogue show Wright as engineering virtuoso as well as creative architect. In addition to these existing masterworks, only the most famous of which are open to the public, the book covers buildings that have been demolished, notably the Larkin Company Administration Building, Midway Gardens, and the Imperial Hotel, which are represented here by drawings and rich archival photographs.
Each of the buildings is presented from conceptual sketch, plan, or drawing to finished masterwork, and each is accompanied by an in-depth essay detailing the development of the work. Extensive quotes from Wright's writings, unpublished talks, and private letters to the clients give valuable insight into the architect's own thinking about each commission. Never before has Wright's architecture been presented so elaborately in one volume.

The best overview of Frank Lloyd Wright's greatest designs.......2007-09-08
No one book could capture the full range of Frank Lloyd Wright's brilliance and versatility, but this one comes close! If you're a fan of the man who was arguably the 20th century's greatest architect, this book is a must-have. It covers his design philosophy, and shows how that philosophy was manifested, from Wright's preliminary sketches to great photos of the finished structures. A visual treat and an invaluable reference work.
Ahhhhh Frank!!!!!.......2007-09-04
Coffee table book, lovely photos; if you love the vision of FLW you'll enjoy this book
Wright for the Novelist.......2007-05-09
This is a good book for someone who is intersted in FLW and wants to see most of his Masterworks. However, I wouldn't call much of anything he did after the late 1940's a Masterwork but never the less the book gives a nice overview of his entire career. The guy lived to be 92! Lots of just gorgeous photos. Not many floor plans and the ones included are too small to read. Lots of original colored renderings, sections, elevations & some floor plans. The ratio of text to pictures is 20:80. The book goes quick.
The book is almost a masterpiece itself........2007-04-01
Thirty-eight of his buildings are presented mainly with large color photos along with around a dozen architectural drawings. About a fifth of the book is text. The dust jacket has a striking photo of the exterior of Fallingwater with the lights on inside at night. Maybe half the color photos fill the page. There are about nine black and white photos, mainly in the front of the book as well as a page of eight other black and white photos showing the construction of one of the buildings.
If you want a high quality overview of his work, this is the book to get. Enough buildings are shown to give you a broad view of his work and the book is long enough to go into some detail on each building. The text provides lots of information and reads less like a textbook and more like someone revealing the work of a master, in this case, America's finest architect.
You're not likely to be able to find this for much of a discounted price. It's certainly a well done book and does not fall in the catagory of discounted books. Some things are worth paying for and this could be one of them. I gotta admit, I was more willing to pay full price for Fallingwater by Kaufman. The big difference was that his book had far more full page color photographs. That's one of my few small complaints about this book. If only. But the quality of presentation, the consistently high quality of the photos and, of course, the buildings they focus on, really makes this a book deserving of a full 5 star rating. There are no bad or weak or slightly out of focus photos in this book. Many of the photos are particularly beautiful. This is the finest collection of his drawings I have seen in one book. If you only plan to own two FLW books I would definitely say make it this one and the Fallingwater book.
Wonderful Gift .......2007-03-09
I bought this item as a gift. The person I gave it to loves it. Wonderful descriptions and beautiful photographs. A great gift for the Architecture and/or Frank Llyod Wright enthusiast.

Magnificient art.......2004-06-20
That Frank Lloyd Wright was an artist is of course no surprise -- however, we often forget that, as an architect, he had to have quite an eye and ability for drawing. To be able to commit an idea down on paper is the first, and sometimes most crucial step, in designing a project, particularly when one has to convince another party to pay for it.
This book by Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, who began as an apprentice with Wright at Talesin West, and directs the FLW archives at the FLW Foundation, is a masterpiece of the artistic design of Frank Lloyd Wright. It has more than 300 illustrations, nearly half of those in full-colour plates, in a wide-page format that makes this a great gift book, coffee-table book, and guide for those serious in the arts. An expert with the craft of draftsmanship as well as creative with flair for the artistic/aesthetic side of his buildings and concepts, these images show an astonishing range through the 300 concept pieces, plans, elevations and perspectives contained herein.
Pfeiffer puts these drawings into different categories:
- Residential Designs
- Religious Structures
- High-Rise Buildings
- Civic & Cultural Centers
- Hotels, Inns & Resorts
- Commercial & Educational Buildings
- Architecture & Engineering
- The Imperial Hotel
- Graphic and Decorative Designs
There are fold-out pages, such as the pages that show Wright's concept for the Mile-High Cantilever Sky-City; such designs are unlikely in today's terrorism-conscious culture. Some projects were never completed, such as this, but others, such as Fallingwater and the Imperial Hotel, were completed. Pfeiffer explores the pictures with history, concept, and Wright's own personal ideas included.
A wonderful book!
great book.......1999-12-14
I got this book last x mas. I still read and look at it every month. I think it's a great review of a very special person who really knew how to draw !
Amazing !!!!.......1999-05-08
When I first saw the FallingWater House, I saw that FLW was really an special person. This book shows us that all his masterpieces were just a clue of what he was able to do, of the buildings he could create. In FLW Drawings, you can see many perspectives representing his newest toughts and ideas, and proving that he really would have changed the world of architecture if God had givven him 30 years more (as he used to say). article: João Paulo Salgueiro

From the Publisher.......2005-11-09
"Frank Lloyd Wright not only designed buildings but also drew them--with legendary skill. His draftsmen and apprentices helped to bring over 1,000 of his innovative ideas into presentation and working drawings, but it is Wright's genius that uniquely informs them all. Wright designed all types of structures, from religious edifices to restaurants, amusement parks to municipal civic centers. The homes and structures featured here, dating from the 1890s to 1957, testify to Wright's singular vision and immense talent. ¶ 13 x 12" wall calendar (opens to 13 x 24") with twelve full-color reproductions. expert quality.......2006-02-05
As an ardent Chinese antique ceramics for more than 5 years, I can confirm that Mr Wood's knowledge is vast and its information would be most useful for all parties interested in this aspect of art collecting. As a non-Chinese it is not at all easy to become an expert in this field, and the author must be congretulated on the production of such a superb book. The quality of the photos is exemplery.
Alex Yip, Hong Kong.
Glazing Pots.......2000-10-03
This is a good book about glazes used in China (with a few from neighboring countries). It puts the glazes and their use into historical context within the lineage of Chinese emperors/dynasties. It includes pictures of pottery decoration for functional pieces (bowls, plates, etc..). It includes a large number of glaze recipies in a very condensed format at the end of the book. I look forward to trying a few of them soon.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I was hoping for..........2005-07-02
I was disappointed when I got this book. If you are a beginner, than this would be a decent book for you. It does offer good beginners tips and information. If you are looking for inspiring children's photography or great new tips, look somewhere else.
Decent pictures and ideas, but nothing great.......2004-01-02
After reading the book from cover-to-cover and analyzing the pictures, I agree with kiraras: many (or most) of the pictures are of what NOT to do. If you want a better alternative, go to a website that teaches composition techniques and take a bunch of pictures of your son or daughter. If you get the book, compare your shots with Vic's, and I'm sure your photos will be just as good (assuming you can afford a non-point&shoot). The picture on the front of the book is excellent, perhaps the best. Follow the 'Look inside this book' link and see what's on the first few pages; that's as good as it gets: good pictures, not great. If you want 'great' or are a non-studio photographer, this book may not be of much use. However, if you're not good working with kids when photographing, this book may provide you with some valuable information, but nothing outstanding.
Lots of information!.......2003-10-17
I bought this book looking for the author's credibility online and I couldn't be happier.
The book shows information concerning how to select equipment, to deal with children, improve lighting skills, how to choose a good lab, films, making proofs, etc.
It also has lots of inspiring pictures of children.
If not the best, one of the best books I have ever read.Iam proud to own it.
If you want to choose one book on photographing children among many, I vote for this.
Very good book.......2003-04-15
This book is very good. It is complete to the point of ideas on how to get the attention of children of different ages and how to help them smile and relax. The author covers just about every issue concerning photographing children.
This book is good for beginners and experienced photographers because it has many ideas. Beginners will not get overwhelmed with photography jargon, and experienced photographers will get an insight on thinking like a child and dealing with them and the parents. I recommend this book for every child photographer.
Excellent for artists.......2002-12-18
I am a professional children's photographer who was looking for some fresh poses and ideas, and I definitely found those in Orenstein's book. The photos are non-traditional and full of life and movement, but you can bet that almost every last one was a seller -- and probably at a higher price than a boring department store portrait. It's full of great ideas for showcasing a child's personality and developing a creative, personal, SELLABLE style.
I read the reviews before I bought it, and I have to say that the photos are great examples of how you need to learn "Photo Class 101" rules, and then break them. If you are interested in "mall photo mill", standard studio stock shots of kids with tired props in front of fake-looking backgrounds, look elsewhere. But if you want to be more than just a point-and-shoot photographer, Orenstein's book is for you. I would highly recommend it to all those who are just starting out in this fun but often frustrating field.

Customer Reviews:
Finally a Great Book on Photographing Children.......2007-06-17
Cheryl Machat's sensitivity and unique perspective are wonderfully apparent in this collection of photography lessons. This book is from an artist for an artist. Machat, with technical perfection and a soft heart, sees kids. The pictures are raw and the children are real. This book may not appeal to the frightened beginner who wants/needs to doll-up kids, but parents and artist are going to love it. Check out her work at Cherylmachatdorskind.com. Unbelievable!
Just plain bad.......2006-08-19
I will admit that the text is not bad. There is some good advice on every aspect of photographing children. However, what is bad about this book is that the photographs are just horrible. Compositions are poor, lighting is poor, focus is poor. If you are looking to learn a lot about photographing children, you really won't from this book.
A guide for amateur and professional photographers alike.......2005-03-13
The Art of Photographing Children: Techniques for Making Better Color, Black and White, Handcolored, and Digital Pictures is a no-nonsense guide for amateur and professional photographers alike. Chapters discuss optimum equipment, lighting, composition, and more, such as how to capture an important moment, and tips for running a smooth photo shoot. The easy-to-follow narration accompanies a wealth of black-and-white and color photographs that keenly illustrate points and principles discussed. Highly recommended for proud parents seeking to succinctly capture their child's milestones on film, family portrait experts striving to improve their craft, and every photographer in between.
