4 out of 5 stars Nice Book - But NOT a pattern book.......2006-06-23

I actually DID read this lovely book accentuated by wonderful pictures....just be aware that it is NOT a book of stained glass patterns although the pictures will surely provide ample ideas for you to adapt. It'll be difficult NOT to get excited about doing some 'lightscreen' projects around your home or office where you DO want want to see outside, unobstructed light and scenery with either full panels or partial panels. Am I glad I bought this book?...You bet!

4 out of 5 stars Decent pictures of many FLLW glass designs.......2000-11-07

This book has a fairly decent amount of photos of FLLW's glass designs, and the quality of the photos is decent also. I haven't read much of the book since I'm mainly interested in the photographs of his windows. There's not a lot of quality books out there for his stained glass (unless you want to spend $... on the Glass Art book), so this is a worthwhile introductory purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Faberge Encyclopedia.......2007-05-25

This book has a small section of small photos that are not very good quality. All of the 47 known to exist Imperial Eggs are not shown. If you are looking for photos of the Faberge Eggs look elsewhere. If you are looking for 263 pages of print information this is it.

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly detailed.......2004-06-26

This is an amazing book because it is so comprehensive. In all the descriptions, it tells every discrepensy there ever has been and why certain evidence points to the accepted facts. The only thing that makes it hard to read is the lack of pictures. You should buy a good picture book with this to really grasp everything. Otherwise, this is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars A gallery of fascinating photographs.......1999-12-16

Originally published in 1946, this is a terrific presentation of Civil War photos by the Matthew Brady team. Of special interest is the section reproducing Brady's post-war lantern slide lecture book, with unedited captions, for a program that was to have been presented at Carnegie Hall.

Roy Meredith's text covers Brady's pre-war career, with a large sampling of his portraits - including Lincoln - then takes up a chronological account, mostly of the Eastern Theater, as Brady & his team followed the armies in a wagon, processing their plates under terrible conditions. A large amount of photographs must have been ruined in the rain & mud. Brady mostly points his camera at the terrible aftermath of battle, at bodies & broken barricades, but there is one rare photo that may have been shot during Antietam. Brady is present at an out door gathering of Grant and his generals (Brady calls it a "War Council," but Grant never put his plans up for a vote. We see a defeated Lee, his great dignity intact. The Grand Review marches past. The Lincoln conspirators are hanged. Then we meet an arrogant Custer; a delegation of Native American chiefs; the curvaceous dancer, Laura Le Claire; Andrew Carnegie and finally, President Grant.

There are many books available of Civil War photographs. This one is excellent because it focuses on Brady. It's a large book - over 300 pages & 300 photos. Dover publishes fine books at bargain prices.

This classic novel of the weird supernatural, first published in 1908, was an important influence on H. P. Lovecraft. In the ruins of an ancient stone house in Ireland is found the diary of an elderly man who lived alone with his sister and their pets, and who longed for his lost love. The diary tells of how the man explores a cyclopean cavern beneath the house and fights off swarms of white pig-like monsters pouring up from below. Then, in a visionary sequence, he breaks through to an alternate space-time dimension and sees a doppelganger of his house on a vast desolate plain. The prose is hokey at times, but the strange mood evoked by the other-dimensional setting is powerful indeed. As acclaimed horror writer T. E. D. Klein says, "Never has a book so hauntingly conveyed a sense of terrible loneliness and isolation."

"The House on the Borderland (1908) -- perhaps the greatest of all Mr. Hodgson's works -- tells of a lonely and evilly regarded house in Ireland which forms a focus for hideous otherworld forces and sustains a siege by blasphemous hybrid anomalies from a hidden abyss below. The wanderings of the Narrator's spirit through limitless light-years of cosmic space and Kalpas of eternity, and its witnessing of the solar system's final destruction, constitute something almost unique in standard literature. And everywhere there is manifest the author's power to suggest vague, ambushed horrors in natural scenery." -- H.P. Lovecraft

3 out of 5 stars The Roots of Horror.......2006-12-27

Lovecraft spoke highly of Hodgeson, as did Smith. This particular book definitely fits into the genre of weird. The reason that I gave it only three stars is that I have read or seen these ideas before. However, the reason it gets as many stars as it does is that this is most likely the source of all those other texts and films. Many of the concepts that horror writers and film makers use seem to appear in this book, though long before they became so easily recognizable. I imagine someone reading this volume without having had the benefit of years of horror films and books to desensitize one to the concepts introduced, and I imagine that this book freaked the holy bejeezus out of him. Don't break the bank to get it, but if you're interested in turn of the century horror this will be one you won't want to miss.

The House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson
          Review by Nickolas Cook

There are classics of the genre and then there are CLASSICS of the genre. "The House on the Borderland" is a CLASSIC.
Hodgson uses the plot device of a found tale, as two weekend campers find a crumbling manuscript in the ruins of an ancient house in the woods. Creepy enough already, but when the campers begin to read the lost story of a recluse and his sister it gets even more foreboding.
Lovecraft cited this as one of the best horror novels ever written, and it's easy to see why the man who made his name writing 'cosmic horror' would find it such a compelling read. Hodgson is the father of Lovecraft's fears.
Hodgson has actually written two separate novels in "The House on the Borderland". The first is by far the most frightening of the two pieces, as swine-like intelligent creatures siege the house and the protagonist must battle them for his life. There is a dream sequence at the beginning that sets up that the house is really more than a simple domicile, is, in fact, a sort of extra-dimensional time and space nexus, something that becomes even more apparent in the second half of the book. Through this dream sequence our protagonist finds that there is a monstrous collection of gods that watch the house and its inhabitants from a vast blank desert field.
After his battle with the swine creatures our protagonist descends into the belly of the earth, through a cave in his backyard (which we find later is actually connected to the cellar of the house as well). What he finds there is just as cosmic in its revelations, but he goes no further and barely escapes with his life.
Then comes the second part of the book. And this is where it becomes true 'cosmic horror' as the protagonist is given a glimpse of what the far-far future holds for the universe. As he sleeps, he is thrown headlong into the future and must watch as his own body rots away behind him. He sees the death of the sun, and eventually the death of the earth, and the other planets in the Solar System. Finally, he must face that monstrous collection of gods once again and stay sane.
By book's end we are left with the impression that the world is an unstable collection of facile life and dust, under the control of some faceless entities that give not a wit for mankind's fate.
That's true 'cosmic horror' at its best.
Hodgson's other works were hit and miss with readers, and none ever reached the pinnacle of "The House on the Borderland". This is a truly inspiring work, made all the more so as it was written long before Lovecraft, Machen, or Lord Dunsany tried their hands at 'cosmic horror'.
This review does come with one caveat: The grammar and style is a bit outdated, and may be a barrier for those unwilling to traverse an age or two of craft.

          --Nickolas Cook.

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Mind-Blowing Book (atrociously-edited edition).......2006-09-19

This was my first experience reading Hodgson and I must say I was blown away. Epic, spectacular, mind-blowing, nearly delirious in its imaginative scope, and awfully scary... the only problem is this paperback edition is woefully edited, with typos galore -- and the editor seems to have no clue when or where to use a comma. They are EVERYWHERE! But skim past the typographical mishaps and enjoy this story for what it is: a glorious ride into uncharted regions of space and time, into what very well might be Hell itself.

          5 out of 5 stars A Frightening Vision - And More.......2006-03-24

Other reviewers have given the gist of the story quite well, so I won't recount it here. Let me just say that there is a reason why this story has been so influential to its readers after nearly 100 years, and continues to amaze and shock. It's because it may be true. I say this because the visions described in this book are more than just scary, they are based upon the real descriptions of other planes of consciousness given by real mystic adepts who have penetrated into the unseen creation through the facility of mystic transport. Even modern-day occurrences of the co-mingling of different planes of existence have been documented in places like Findhorn, Scotland (RE: "The Findhorn Garden"). Indian Mystics from time immemorial have told of "sunnas" - vast regions of emptyness and isolation where monumental icons and symbols from Universal Mind manifest as objects and tableaus. They are the "out-lands" of the astral cosmos, like a sand-spit that collects the wreckage of ships and other flotsam and jetsom from the "stream of consciousness" of Eternity. It's an uncomfortable vision of what's beyond this life on Earth that we know. But reality is far stranger than any fiction. This brilliant narrative may just be a glimpse of the true nature of space-time - and how small is a man, indeed, who is confined to the physical body alone. The dated style is authentic for its era, and those who find it objectionable probably won't like this review either. A lot of thought went into this novel, breaching subject matter that is utterly bizarre and alien to most. Those few travelers who fly on the wings of consciousness will smile knowingly at this. I suggest you also read the entire collection of books by Carlos Casteneda, who gives a glimpse of near-earth astral phenomena. A WONDERful and spellbinding book in any sense, I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Only partially true to the original.......2005-09-10

The original story was one of wonder and terror. This version is mostly wonder, where the good stuff from the novel went. Where is the arena, or the silent and unmoving gods, or the end of the universe? This is only the monster story of the attack of the swine things. Yeah, the swine things are important, but they are NOT the most important part of this wonderful short novel. Unless you are a real comics fanatic, or hate the writing of Hodgson, don't bother with this rip off. It's okay for what it does, but compared to the original novel, this is a couple of mentally retarded children drawing scary pictures.

          5 out of 5 stars I second the nomination!.......2006-01-21

I just received this book from Amazon and will be buying the other editions in this collection as my budget allows. I first read The House on the Borderland years ago and it is indeed a weird and memorable story, ranking up with Lovecraft's best work. This book includes a number of Hodgson's stories about a supernatural detective, and I can't wait to read them.

This edition is among the best of any horror and fantasy editions I've ever seen, with nice use of large and readable typefaces, a very sturdy binding, intriguingly strange artwork inside, and beautiful silver stamping on the cover. My wife has never read anything in this genre but when she saw my book she immediatley picked it up and was entranced by the wonderful craftsmanship in this edition. At just over twenty bucks, this is a terrific value and will not only look beautiful on your shelf but may keep you up all night!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding material, outstanding VALUE.......2006-01-19

Lovecraft wrote of "The House on the Borderland", ""Never has a book so hauntingly conveyed a sense of terrible loneliness and isolation" and called it a "classic of the first water". Hodgson himself saw it as being part of a "trilogy", along with "Glen Carrig" and "Ghost Pirates". He was probably too close to his own work to see that ALL of the later, better material, carried the same oppressive message: we are shielded from malign outer forces by the thinnest of barriers, that what we would like to think of as "reality" is a tissue-thin wall separating us from entities whose very existance and purpose lie far beyond our ability to understand, much less deal with.

"The House on the Borderland" is probably the most accessible of the four novels Hodgson wrote, especially since it eschews the "archaic" language device and sickly-sweet "love interest" that make "The Night Land" so difficult. It is a crisply-written narrative whose power still grips after repeated readings. "Canacki the Ghost Finder" is a more familar "occult detective", somewhat along the lines of Blackwood's "John Silence", but he reaches incredible heights of tension and sense of dread, especially in "The Gateway of the Monster" and "The Whistling Room".

The remaining eleven short stories vary in quality, but none of them is a "dud", and none of them has been available in anything other than obscure, expensive, and now out of print anthologies.

Beautifully presented in dark blue with brilliant silver stamping, this and its companion volumes don't just LOOK good, they're **fantastic** values. Absolutely my highest recommendation. Reading this, you'll see that "fantasy" and "horror" writers of today scribble in the shadows of giants.

          5 out of 5 stars excellent collection.......2006-01-10

I'd guess that if you are looking at this review you probably already know that William Hope Hodgson is one of the masters of 20th Century Fantasy Horror, and a huge influence on all who came after him in particular HP Lovecraft. Whether you know anything about Hodgson or not, this volume is a good place to start reading. It contains two of his masterworks 'House on the Borderland', with its truly brooding sense of cosmic despair, and the stories of Carnacki the occult detective. It also has quite a few other stories I have not seen before which while generally not of the same quality are definately worth reading.

The production values of the book are excellent, with decent size font, sewn binding and rather irrelevant but interesting illustrations. My only vague complaint is that the backing boards are of a plasticky nature and probably will not last as long as cloth, but this is a triviality.

I will definately be getting the others of the series as they come out, and will probably not bother hanging on my copy of the old Arkhan collection of novels. There is no better recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond genre fiction.......2005-02-01

This odd, deeply atmospheric novel is undoubtedly the masterwork of the eccentric Edwardian English wrtier William Hope Hodgson. It presents the haunting story of an old recluse who lives in a weird borderland between ordinarly reality and unspeakable horror. The tale is presented through the experience of two friends who discover an old manuscript in the ruin of a mansion while camping in rural Ireland. The papers describe the strange visions and terrifying experiences of the recluse who, together with his elderly sister, was the house's last living inhabitant. The story is powerfully evocative of the different kinds of evil that can befall a human mind. It should appeal to anyone who likes Lovecraft or Poe, but goes far beyond the limits of the horror genre in its imaginative power and artistry.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful visit to an earlier era of horror and fastasy.......2004-04-24

as a teen i read hodgson's "the nightland" and "boats of the glen carrig" with the former impressing me strongly. i could never find "the house on the borderland" and was unaware of his short fiction. hearing of the release of hardcover editions of his collected works led to an enjoyable reread of "boats" and the short fiction in the 1st volume of the series.(also thank you to my teen son who suggested i seek out "house.") i preordered this 2nd volume months ago, and the wait was well worth it. "house" is a match for any work of fantastic horror (lovecraft, derleth, king, etc)and a book almost unbelievably inventive for its time. the short fiction in this volume is as much of a treat as what was in the 1st volume. the last story is a chilling comment on the danger of the western mind misunderstanding the thought processes of the east (certainlyly pertinent today) and all the short fiction has something to offer. this was strong work and is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Master of Horror Fiction.......2007-09-26

If you like supernatural horror fiction that explores the subtle effects of uncanny fear on an isolated individual, you'll enjoy THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND. Hodgson is a master of this sort of horror. If you prefer your horror with spurting blood and entrails exposed, Hodgson is not your writer. He prefers to depict his protagonist's struggle with growing dread of some profoundly evil presence, which his commonsense tells him can't exist even though the hair on the back of his neck is standing.

The novel's premise is not original: the lonely man living in a strange house that rests on a portal to the underworld. It's Hodgson's skill in working out fascinating implications of that premise that makes the novel worth reading.

            Book Description

Gothic Horror 1 brings together in one volume the first two books of William Hope Hodgson's "Trilogy" which was an important influence on H.P. Lovecraft. Fast-paced adventure combines with the supernatural to create "The Boats of Glen Garrig." Events unfold with a vivid believability that could only come from an author who has had first-hand experience with danger. Hodgson's early career at sea allows him to write with authority and create an atmosphere of such authenticity that when the malignant forces begin to intrude, they are all the more convincing.

"The House on the Borderland" is an ancient and crumbling estate, overrun by wild gardens. There resides a man who has a most unusual story to tell--a story that blends horror, fantasy, and science fiction. As a beautifully written work of pure imagination, Hodgson's work has few equals, and has been compared to the writings of Poe, Machen, and Blackwood. As acclaimed horror writer T. E. D. Klein says, "Never has a book so hauntingly conveyed a sense of terrible loneliness and isolation."

Hodgson's Trilogy concludes in Gothic Horror 2 which features "The Ghost Pirates" and also includes the chilling account of "Carnacki The Ghost Finder."

Enjoy a wild ride into the supernatural!

4 out of 5 stars boats are not seaworthy, the house is.......2003-04-08

Glen Carig has great promise, but ends up dwelling where it shouldn't, skipping where it should linger, describing in the most technical manner where...... Well, you get it. Hodgson always seem to choose the wrong time to do or not to do something in this novel. sad. the story is about the fate of some ships in a strange place. the house on the borderland is the greatest book in weird fiction. amazing imagery, great description, the helplesness and horror the man in the house is experiencing can be experienced by anyone. the weird landscape and the descriptions of cosmos is a must-read. the story is about a house connected to something outerworldly. it is visited by strange beings trying to get in. the main person must keep them out, and wants to solve the mystery

Two novels in one; they both are an easy read that you won't want to put down. They have great characters and incredible stories that will stick with you and make you think about them long after they are finished. These are a must have for any sci-fi/horror fan. My favorites.
