Book Description
Although fundamental factors of program, technology, and economics make tall buildings everywhere take similar forms, skyscrapers in New York and Chicago developed very differently in the first half of the twentieth century. In contrast to standard histories that counterpose the design philosophies of the Chicago and New York "schools," Willis shows how market formulas produced characteristic forms in each city—"vernaculars of capitalism"—that resulted from local land-use patterns, municipal codes, and zoning. Refuting some common clich s of skyscraper history such as the equation of big buildings with big business and the idea of a "corporate skyline," Willis emphasizes the importance of speculative development and the impact of real-estate cycles on the forms of buildings and on their spatial distribution.
Form Follows Finance cautions that the city must be understood as a complex commercial environment where buildings are themselves businesses, space is a commodity, and location and image have value.

Perhaps a little to dry for someone not totally engaged in the subject matter, but overall this book is extremely interesting and full of helpfull information to anyone interested in urban design, the cities of New York or Chicago, or architecture.

This book is great and well written...This book gives a comprehensive look at the developement of the skyscraper between the two major cities that shaped the world of high-rise architecture. Each chapter provides a detailed look of the different factors and events that led to the design of skyscrapers that gave the amazing profile of Chicago and New York as we see it today.
This book is a must for architects, architectural historians, preservationist!

A Virtual Waste of Paper.......2006-11-08
Very disappointing. The only interesting bits are the correspondence section and the chapter written by a survivor of an late 60s-early 70s Canadian experimental psychiatric unit. The rest I found to be an unstructured shambles. The author seems to be have over-stretched himself and there's no kind of any narrative thread. He also seems to be a bit paranoid, making statements like "By definition, all intelligence agents are liars." Also, he seems to dismiss the work of Peter Duesberg by claiming that the publisher of one of Duesberg's books is an "Ultracon". For what it's worth, I thought that the book Duesberg co-wrote, "Why We Will Never Win the War on AIDS" was excellent, so I guess that may make me an "Ultracon" too?! Also, there's very little about what it says the subject matter is on the cover: "CIA Mind Control Operations in America" and there's no proper bibliography and no index. I would recommend books such as The Search for the Manchurian Candidate or The Men Who Stare at Goats instead, or maybe even just enter "ELF waves" into a search engine.

I've read this book twice. I'll read it again. It never fails to blow me away, and each time I notice something I didn't notice before - usually because I've read something more that helps the pieces fall into place. You blink your eyes, you can't believe what you are seeing, how do they get away with writing this stuff? You wonder. Of course, you would rather be wrong. And then something happens in the world that only makes sense because you read this book. They invented the word "gooseflesh" for how that makes you feel. And the world is never the same again.
Constantine is a Zionist/Communist Apologist.......2004-11-28
I was disappointed in this book because it atttibutes all evil to the Nazi branch of the Illuminati without any reference to the Zionist Communist branch. The tips offs are 1) He defends an acknowledged Communist spy Harry Dexter White as a true patriot. He retails the lie that James Forrestal committed suicide. Don't waste your money on this book.
A Secret Establishment Behind the Power?.......2003-02-28
This frightening and almost depressing research, drive us to the quasi unknown underground word of conspiracies.
Starting in the previous years of WWII, Mr. Constantine guided us through the tortuous ways used by de nazis to get into power and how after the end of the war - in collaboration with several US agencies - infiltrated and blended into American culture, economy, society and policy but the most shocking part of this research is how these "organizations" manipulated the citizenry. Operation Mockingbird, created with the purpose of total control of the mass media, buying newspapers, magazines, tv channels and infiltrating Hollywood to influence and control public opinion. The use of innocent citizens as human guinea pigs without their knowledge or concent, the torture and brainwash of adults and children to experiment mind control techniques is the most scary part of this book that make us think and enlight a little about why so many people ended alienated, commiting suicide or becoming mass murderes without a reason. I strongly recommend this book to people who like, enjoy or have certain interest in conspiracy subject.
Best Book on American Fascism I have read.......2000-04-04
This is without a doubt the best book on techno-fascism, hell, on fascism in general, that I have ever read. This is the unadulterated, universally censored truth about domestic politics, and Alex Constantine is a couragous journalist indeed to take on the "Establishment" with intelligence and clarity. The documentation is exhaustive, and I recommend this book to one and all. I anxiously await his next tour de force.

This book cuts through the facade of music and Tell-A-Vision. It carefully outlines and illustrates that society as a whole, is very much so manipulated through subliminal messages in that, your brain is made to function as a mere slave for the elite. Buy this book for all the Batman lovers in your life. It's just plain funny! The Joker blasts his way out of the asylum and again, tries to plat a sinister plan and get rid of Batman. Of course, his ploys do not work but how they go about it is quite funny. My little guy just loves this book, plus it encourages his reading time. Great stuff, hope there are more of these!!

This is a wonderful book, where the imagination of a child runs wild over a visit to Sea World. It involves sharks, penguins, goldfish, whales, an octopus and a heroic boa constrictor. The group goes to Sea World and the supervising mother is accidentally bumped into the whale tank. She yells, "I can't swim", but the children hear, "Jump in!" They do, unleashing a chain of events where the animals and children play together. After being kicked out of Sea World, all of the children buy Jimmy a goldfish and they have a party at Jimmy's house. At the end, Jimmy's mom is totally stressed, but Jimmy is thanking her for a wonderful birthday. I loved it and I passed through my real childhood decades ago.

I knew from the first sentence in this book that we (my 3 boys and I) were going to love it. It is a riot to read this a loud. A wonderful combination a reptile and truely creative writing. We are going to buy every Jimmy's Boa book we can find!

This is a wonderful book for children and adults as well. The humor in the book was easily understood by the children. The book was easy enough to read but yet challenging. It was such a great hit in my class that we had to get another copy!

After the children I work with enjoyed the first mystery in this series, The Afternoon Auction, so much, I knew I had to get them the second book in the series. The kids actually seemed to enjoy this one more than a first, and Iggy is quickly rising to be one of their favorite characters of all of the books they read. I'm sure that the more they read of this series the more obsessed they'll become. Really, these are can't miss tales!!

This second book in the Iggy and Igor series is almost even better than the first. My cousin loves solving the clock mystery with Iggy so much he does it twice a week! We can't wait for the rest of the series!!!
