Book Description
Sculptural structures Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was one of the 20th century's great visionaries, both in the fields of furniture design (he created the ubiquitous Knoll "Tulip" chairs and tables, for example) and in architecture. Among his greatest accomplishments are monuments that shaped architecture in postwar America and became icons in themselves: Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport, the very sculptural and fluid TWA terminal at JFK Airport in New York, and the 630-foot high "Gateway to the West," the Arch of St. Louis. Marrying curves and dynamic forms with a Modernist aesthetic, he brought a whole new dimension to architecture.
Customer Reviews:
Good starter.......2007-06-03
This is an alright intro. book (and reasonable at $10.00) but it almost brings up more questions than it answers. It is a good intro. to Saarinen and his major works, thoguh I had hoped for a bit more overall....
A Mid-Century Visionary.......2006-04-02
This volume is part of Taschen's series of monographs on the the Twentieth Century's greatest architects. This book follows the Series usual format by beginning with an introductory biographical section. It then moves onto Saarinen's most famous works such as the TWA Terminal, Dulles Intenational and Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. Each building receives a few pages of description and several full page photographs. This is all done in 96 well presented pages.
Eero Saarinen was on the leading lights of American Mid-Century Modernism. If you are interested in the period, you must become familiar with Eero Saarinen's work. This is a reasonably priced volume and a great introduction to the works of one of the Twentieth Century's greatest masters. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Emphasizing more "show" than "tell," this very visual instructional takes even the most hesitant, absolute beginners of all ages by the hand and demonstrates, stage by stage, how to start painting in pastel with enthusiasm, confidence, and success. The book assumes no prior painting experience, opening with the essentials: materials, making marks, mixing color, understanding foreground and distance, and making objects look three-dimensional. Step-by-step exercises show how to paint separate features of pictures-plants, flowers, trees, skies, stones, water-then how to combine them into finished paintings.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK!.......2003-07-20
I am an absolute beginner and this book was a great help. It takes you step by step through techniques to making pictures and includes a list of the colors you need. It helps build up your skills. If you know nothing about pastels but would like to, BUY THIS BOOK!
Book Description
When her father dies and leaves her to decide the fate of the family farm, Jane Brox wonders how family identity--language, food, a grandfather's wish for "five thousand days like this one"--can endure when so few traces of former lives are left. With a poet's eye and a historian's hunger, she is driven to search out her family's past in the fascinating and quintessentially American history of the Merrimack Valley, its farmers, and the immigrant workers caught up in the industrial textile age.
Customer Reviews:
Uneven, but interesting account.......2000-07-04
I vascillated between really loving parts of this book, and being annoyed at others. The book discusses the history of the Merrimack Valley in northeastern Massachusetts, weaving in stories about the author's parents' lives there as immigrants from Italy and Lebanon. It also compares descriptions of the area written by Thoreau, and others, in the 19th century.
While most of it was fascinating, some aspects of the book bothered me. First, as the book progresses, it becomes evident that it is a collection of prior essays; some portions are repetitive, almost down to the exact language. Second, I felt that the author was trying too hard to be "lyrical." Some of the writing seemed "forced," convoluted, and grammatically awkward, to the point that I had to reread sentences to figure out what she wanted to say.
Despite these criticisms, it is an interesting read about an area that has changed so much over the last 150 years.
This is an incredibly powerful and exquisitely written book........1999-03-24
Jane Brox's second book is masterful: a cross between social history and memoir, a book that is devastatingly clear about the future of the family farm and yet without a trace of rancor. Even if, like me, you're a city person, you should READ THIS BOOK for its pervasive, gentle wisdom; for its stunning prose; for everything a book should offer to its reader--access to a beloved world.

Inspiration for Everyone!.......2004-09-04
Ms. Klein's book is an inspiration for anyone going through a life crises; illness, death, divorce. Her writing is clear and concise, with no stumbling blocks for the grammatically particular among us. Her sense of humor softens the harsh realities we must face when life demands the full strength of our character. Her book gives us practical application steps with the philosophical and spiritual insight to apply them.
sensible sensitive advice on coping and healing.......2004-08-30
This is very special book written about breat cancer survival by someone who underwent a double mastectomy. It is easy to read and offers clear, thoughtful advice to others undergoing the same experience. It is also useful for people undergoing other kinds of hardships who want to adjust to their own difficulties and fight to be strong and healthy. In simple steps the author confronts the many difficult aspects of surviving a traumatic situation, learning to understand one's own needs and feelings, and strengthening one's own inner resources to achieve emotional well being. I was deeply touched by the author's honesty, positive outlook and sense of humor.

"My first day at school to-day.
Funny sort of day.
Didn't seem to learn much.
Seemed all we did was play.
Then teacher wrote some letters
On a board all painted black,
And then we had a story and...
I don't think I'll go back."
Sure, Mama said there'll be days like this, but little did she know they could be so perfectly captured in a poetry anthology. In this catchy collection, Simon James gathers 19 poems by writers such as Rod Hull ("First Day of School"), Eve Merriam, Ogden Nash, and Charlotte Zolotow; illustrates them; and wham! Days like this become something to look forward to. Celebrating the joys and trials of summer days at the beach, strumming a one-string guitar in the moonlight, bouncing on a bed, and watching rain fall, this buoyant book is worth a second, third, or 99th look. James's sensitive watercolor portrayals of the world as seen through the eyes of small people will amuse and touch readers of all ages. Simon James is the author-illustrator of many acclaimed picture books, including Leon and Bob, a New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year. (Ages 4 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
"Each brief verse has the rhythmic lilt and play with sounds and meaning that so engage young children. . . . But James's illustrations are the best feature of this inviting collection." —THE HORN BOOK (starred review)
DAYS LIKE THIS is a book of celebration — whether it's the novelty of sleeping outdoors, the delight of picnicking on the beach, or the sheer joy of bouncing on the bed in the afternoon. These small poems, some familiar, some new, have been carefully selected by acclaimed author-illustrator Simon James, whose expressive line and watercolors portray an everyday world overflowing with wonder and possibility. With words and pictures given space to breathe, this is a collection of poems to read and revel in from beginning to end.

Endearing poetry for girls AND boys.......2007-05-25
This book contains awesome writing-- poetry that engages even adults who don't love poetry, but love to share special reading moments with children. It appeals to boys and girls (a good thing, since much children's poetry is illustrated with foofy, flowery art... which I do like, as well). My 3-year-old-daughter knows them all. We often recall lines from the poems when we're out in the world, making for fun shared moments and common ground between us. My husband enjoys reading it to her, too. The illustrations set the perfect tone. I have given this as a gift to children who's parents later thanked me for this jewel. Thank YOU, Simon James, for creating a treasure for our family.
Perfect introduction to poetry for any child..........2001-02-08
"Days Like This" is the perfect introduction to poetry for a small child. The sketchy, squiggly illustrations are just as captivating as the simple, sweet poems that accompany them. Each illustration tells a story by itself--a refreshing story of the wide, open world--while the poems focus the reader (or listener) to consider a single aspect of that world. The text and the pictures worked so beautifully together that I'm not sure if I can say which was illustrating which. It's a symbiosis I've never experienced in a book of poetry before, but let me assure you, it is thoroughly enjoyable!
Days Like This: A Collection of Small Poems.......2000-07-08
This lovely picture book of small poems captivated my youngson. Simon James' pen and watercolor illustrations beautifully setoff a collection of whimsical verse that spans the four seasons. "The Wind came running over the sand, it caught and held me by the hand."

home-spun stories of life's lessons..........2002-12-10
This book is a collection of anecdotal stories that show that even in life's rather whacky moments there are lessons to be learned. Baumbich shares her home-spun stories about things that have occured throughout her life, and taught her many things. These lessons are not always pretty and they are not always easy, but the lessons seem to flourish! Charlene Ann Baumbich points out that not all these lessons need be painful or embarassing, sometimes they are a pure unexpected delight.
This is an easy book to read in small bites and is the kind of book that can be passed among friends.

A book for all moms.......2007-06-26
Reviewed by Lori Plach for Reader Views (6/07)
"Just wait till you have kids of your own!" How many mothers have ever said that when they are reaching their limit. When children are little, they think their mother knows everything. When they get older, they think their moms are totally out of touch. But as the years go by and you become a parent yourself, you start to realize that your mother was right all along. Your mother might have told you that "someday your time will come." If you are faced with the trials and tribulations of motherhood and just need to take a break, you have just the place to lose yourself. It's time to sit back and enjoy a book so you don't feel so alone.
In fact, your mother's knowledge has even been sung about in a popular old song written by Van Morrison and is the title song of his 1995 album. You probably have the chorus ringing in your head upon reading the title of the book. Jenn Doucette has created a wonderful book which will give exhausted and worn-out mothers a much needed rest. Through her many stories about her own experiences, Jenn offers you a friend to laugh with. Her book is laid out in a road trip type fashion. Each chapter offers a rest stop and explores reclaiming contentment and wonder, repairing relationships and rekindling romance just to name a few. Each chapter ends with what she calls "Tank Toppers," which are ideas which you can use to put the information into action. She encourages the readers to "Take a Break" which is a prayer, and "Getting Directions," which gives the readers a place to write down areas which you want to address.
I found myself laughing throughout this book and yet gaining all kinds of valuable information. Jenn Doucette is an excellent author and I hope to find more books by her. "Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This" is very true, but there is no need to crumple under the pressures of parenthood. Jenn is here with her book which will help you in your travels in every stage of parenthood and put a smile on your face in the process.
A book to pass on to friends and family and then read again.......2007-05-14
Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This by Jenn Doucette is the perfect gift for a new mom, older mom, any mom! Jenn writes 12 short chapters about how to recharge your batteries, remember how important your kids are, reignite your marriage, and renew your relationship with God. All along the way she tells hilarious anecdotes and heart-warming stories. I finished the book Friday night and I already miss reading it. The chapters are brief enough to read while waiting to pick up the kids from school or practice, but they pack a powerful punch. She stresses the importance of being a mom while never losing your sense of humor or love for God. I'm passing this book on to my mom, my aunt, and my cousins, and I'll recommend it to everyone else.
A Dose of Honesty.......2007-04-24
I highly recommend this book to any mom who wants an honest reflection on parenting. For those of you who are tired of the unrealistic how-to-parenting books this book offers a dose of reality sprinkled with inspiration and humor. Jenn Doucette offers a great helping of comfort in a time when being a perfect parent is sometimes the goal.
A Refreshing Rest Stop.......2007-04-13
I read Jenn's book after waiting anxiously to receive it. Her first book, The Velveteen Mommy, was so good I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one! What The Velveteen Mommy does for moms of little children, this one does for moms who have moved on to the next stage, which is definitely me. I am in that stage of running so much, I meet myself coming and going! My husband and I pass each other in the revolving door of our house-- and hope we can keep a marriage running in those stolen moments. Jenn addresses all of this with humor and hope that is a balm to every mom's soul. Check this book out if you need a heapin' helpin' of encouragment!
HILARIOUS LOOK AT REAL-LIFE MOMHOOD.......2007-04-03
This book had me laughing throughout. Jenn Doucette is one funny lady, a gal who's not afraid to admit her quirks and foibles -- so that those of us who feel EXACTLY the same way can feel some relief. We're not alone! :)
Sprinkled with a healthy dose of hard-earned wisdom, Doucette has the comedic rhythm that makes this book a joy to read. In fact, it can be downright embarrassing when you burst out laughing "HA HA HA! ME TOO!" in the doctor's office. (oops.)
This would be a great pick-me-up gift for moms in the busy child-raising years. There seems to be no lack of books for moms-to-be and newborn moms -- as well as plenty of advice-giving parenting tomes. Doucette's book fills in the gap needed when we're feeling like we just need a girlfriend to say, "I'm with you. I'm tired, my car's a mess, but I love God, I love my kids, and I love being a mom!!"

J. Torres, who used memory to great effect in The Copybook Tales, now casts his eye back to the early '60s, when pop music ruled the airwaves. Days Like This follows the formation of "Tina & the Tiaras," a new girl group, as they rise up the charts and overcome personal obstacles to become stars. Featuring stunning art by newcomer Scott Chantler that's reminiscent of the clean lines of vintage graphic design from the period.
