Customer Reviews:
a nice little book.......2007-05-03
A nice little book on the subject. Gives the reader a basic covering on a variety of dwellings of the period but unfortunately rarely gives more than one or two floors of a design that uas three or four without providing a full set. Also doesn't provide scale for some designs.
Another great resource from Dover.......2003-08-12
Though these houses purport to be "country houses and seaside cottages," there's little reason they couldn't have been built in any Victorian small town. They range from a tiny three-room structure to a rambling 10-bedroom Dutch Gambrel mansion (called in those days a "villa") to a "club house" (easily altered to private use), a lakeside pavilion, a Baptist chapel, a "stone rectory in Iowa," and a couple of apartment blocks, one of which eerily reminds me of a building not far from my former home. These buildings are primarily of the Eastlake or Queen Anne style, the original book having appeared in 1883, an era when the front stair-hall was often as big as any other room and used as such. You'll need a magnifier to make out some of the details, but if you have any interest at all in late-Victorian domestic architecture, you need to have this volume on your shelves.
Country Houses and Seaside Cottages of the Victorian Era.......2000-08-21
Is a great visually informative book. It gives the reader a better idea of the way homes were built in the late 19th century. The book covers a wide variety of victorian styles and includes plans, perspective views and elevations from a small 4 room cottage, to a huge 36+ room mansion in the Caribbean. I recomend this book to anybody interested in late 19th century victorian architecture.
Country Houses and Seaside Cottages of the Victorian Era.......2000-08-18

It covers a variety of victorian styles and has floorplans along with perspective views and elevations from a small 3 room cottage to a 36+ room mansion. This is a great way to learn about victorian architecture.

Great reference!.......2007-04-11
I am a budding watercolorist and this is a great reference book on technique and application. I find inspiration in the illustrations and cannot wait to apply them to my next drawing/painting.
Full of step-by-step illustrations and explanations. Love it.
New Painter.......2006-11-10
The book arrived as expected. It was in great shape. No issues. I love it when things are so easy.
Great book.......2006-07-15
This is an outstanding book. The author goes into detail on how she creates the effects in her illustrations. Many of her ideas and techniques can be carried over into other subject material. This was one of the best art instruction books I have purchased in regards to watercolor and ink. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for insight on creating wonderful textures with this media. However, I would suggest reading reviews of the author's other books to select the subject matter you like best before deciding which one to get because there is apparently some overlap.
weathered buildings in Pen & ink.......2006-07-05

Straight stuff.......2003-12-20
This is an excellent book for any level watercolorist.I have read an uncommonly large number of how-to books(being self -taught) yet still found much helpful info here. In particular, her advice to avoid using tube paints that have dried, goes against info provided by every other source I have read----but I am sure she is right. You need to read her section on this subject---worth the price of the book by itself(and I am not being paid for this)!!!
Colorful!.......2000-01-07
Instructive chapters beautifully illustrated by Treman cover ideas and concepts for the beginner to the advanced watercolorist. She gives watercolor basics and gradually builds to more complex instruction (composition, importance of value, mixing colors). Especially unique to Treman is her chapter on "disappearing purple" which gives insight into new concepts of shading while still maintaining fresh clean colors.

A must have for your "how to" library!.......2000-01-08
This is truly an excellent book! Great techniques and illustrations shown with fabulous detail! Inspirational too! I highly recommend this book, especially if you like painting buildings or scenes with buildings. One of the best watercolor books I've seen!
Indispensible book for the serious artist........1999-02-20
I am a "profesional" seascape artist and needed a push to get myself painting again; and perhaps a change of pace. I find that this book is brim-full of important info, techniques and ideas which any artist can enjoy applying. Raves!
Book Description
Buildings-old and new, ornate or simple-provide an endlessly intriguing subject for watercolorists. Author and artist Richard Taylor gives you all the techniques for capturing perspective, proportion, light and shade, detail and texture. After deciding on the right materials, try your hand at everything from sheds and shacks to classical architecture with formal designs, arches, and elegant frontage. Capture the weathered appeal of a crumbling, ruined boatyard; by using lots of water, and downward vertical strokes with the brush, all the dramatic effects of ageing emerge on the paper. Stone steps leading up to a quiet Mediterranean courtyard shine in dappled light and warm shadows-deep in the interior, leafy branches, potted plants, windows, and a statue catch the eye. Or, paint quadrangles, cloisters; terraced homes, town houses, and street life. Throughout, 120 paintings in various stages of completion, show the effects of color, shadowing, and balance. A Selection of F&W's Book Clubs.
Customer Reviews:
The best in this category I have seen........2000-06-30
This book is well writen. Author emphasizes on colour value. After reading this book , you will know about howto use warm colours and cold colours to paint a building with a right value. However, this bood isn't a step-by-step book, the author didn't tell much about howto mix colours and howto sketch. It's good for who loves and wants to paint European-style buildings ,and an architect who wants to render his picture with watercolour.
Excellent methods and techniques with limited palate.......1999-05-18
One of the most informative books on watercolor techniques and color theory. It covers all types of building surfaces from weathered wood to bricks and stucco. If you love painting buildings with textures this is the book to buy.

Book Description
The Photographer's Master Printing Course offers both the enthusiastic printer and the complete beginner the key to creating perfect prints that combine technical assurance with true self-expression. Ranging from the basics of equipping a darkroom to advanced skills such as lith printing, toning and multiple printing, this complete volume is on the recommended book list of the Royal Photographic Society's Visual Arts (Pictorial) Panel.
Customer Reviews:
If I could only have one darkroom book............2006-12-06
this would be it. Tim Rudman is one of the best teachers of photography around and this is one of the best technique books available. Get it.
The benchmark for beginners and Pro's........2003-08-20
My first attempts in the darkroom were some 31 years ago and I purchased many, many books to discover the how and why of black and white printing. I still have all those books, BUT now that I have Tim Rudman's book in my new darkroom the others gather dust. This book is the benchmark for beginners and Pro's.
Thank you Amazon for making it available.
Excellent! Very Comprehensive and easy to understand.......2003-01-21
I am an amature photographer who wanted to get into printing my photos. This book was the foundation of my learning. It was very comprehensive and easy to understand. I found that it was technical enough to make you understand the principles, yet pragmatic enough to use immediatly. Mr. Rudman has done a great service to the photographic community.
Raymond's rating.......2002-01-22
For the novice, this book could be a little bit too much advanced. For the seasonal (but serious) dark room user, plentiful advices are available, yet the author seems to be in a hurry to go to some points that do not add up in creativity. Well written, I would quote that book as a seasonal reference. The technical side is usefull.
I would believe that the author has a very good knowledge for handling toning procedures. Yet, it's useless to try to give a better rendition by toning an inappropriately printed image.Should it be rewritten, the goal should be to give more details on toning, and suggests that it is for advanced photo printers.
Example or really good book on advance printing.......2001-12-08
I am quite new to Black and White printing (that is I do my own printing but I am not professional). I am amazed by the wealth of information given in this book on toning, bleaching, multiple printing and so on. Furthermore you could really see what author mean by showing photographs before and after using some bleaching toning or other technics. And photographs by itself don't feel to be unnatural, in a sense, that most of them show some grain in much or less degree depending on used techinics. Of course, some photographers who like gradual soft sort of photography may not like Rudman's harsh contrasty style of depicting nature, but who cares, it's his artistic expression. He could really explain how he got one or another effect. By the way, if at the end you don't like this book you may leave it for the simple fact of its attractiveness. It could serve you as nice coffee table book, quality is superb. Excellent book.
Customer Reviews:
great for beginners and advanced lith printers.......2005-08-15
Very well organized and written, this book is a must for beginners and advanced lith printers alike. I am new to the process and found the book was easy to follow with great examples. The author provided lists of supplies and suppliers to make it even easier to get started as well as charts of specific papers and the effects of various developers so the beginner would know what to expect. This is not just a how-to book, but instead the author encourages exploration within the process.
Complete, Well-Organized Lith Lesson. Stunning Examples........2004-07-14
"The Master Photographer's Lith Printing Course" is a beautiful comprehensive guide to Lith printing. Not to be confused with ultra-contrasty lith film, Lith printing is a technique by which a print is overexposed and then partially developed in Lith developer to produce a print that is colored monochrome. Prints typically have black shadows, colored mid-tones and burned-out highlights. The photographs must be printed on lith or other suitable black-and-white paper, and the colors produced vary according to the paper and technique. Lith prints may also be toned for additional color effects. Lith printing can be done from color negatives, but normally black-and-white negatives are preferable.
A photography book should be illustrated with example photographs that the reader can admire and would want to emulate. Author Tim Rudman must agree. "The Master Photographer's Lith Printing Course" contains about 125 example photographs, nicely reproduced, that are inspirational. The book is also very well organized. It starts with an introduction and FAQ. Chapter 1 provides an overview of lith printing which explains what effects lith printing produce, why, and to what subjects it might be suited. Chapter 2 talks about the equipment and materials you will need, including the qualities of each paper and developer that may be used in lith printing. Chapter 3 explains how to make a basic lith print. Chapter 4 goes into more detail about controlling printing and developing for various effects, including dodging, burning, and selective development. Chapter 5 talks about the whys and wherefores of pepper fogging, among other difficulties, and offers solutions. Chapter 6 is a short course in the chemistry behind lith printing, an understanding of which will help you prevent and solve problems. Chapter 7 is about controlling color in prints during development. Chapter 8 discusses toning lith prints, specifically with gold, selenium, and selenium plus gold toners for stunning effects. Chapter 9 talks about redeveloping conventional prints in lith developer. Chapter 10 introduces some "lith look-a-like effects" that can be achieved with sodium-hydroxide enriched developer, split-thiocarbamide toning, and various bleaching techniques. Some of these produce breathtaking results. Everything is generously illustrated. Tips and cautions are displayed in conspicuous colored boxes. The topics covered in each chapter are set out at the beginning of the chapter. The only fault I have with the book is minor: The captions that explain the photographs are quite good, but they are so small as to be difficult to read.
It should be noted that Tim Rudman is British, and he uses the British names for lith papers. UK/US/Australian paper equivalents are given in the excellent appendices in the back of the book. Also found in the appendices are: a troubleshooting guide, paper characteristics for 19 papers discussed in the book, a color guide that tells us which papers produce which colors under what circumstances, a paper speed reference table, an f-stop chart for printing, a glossary, and a list of US, UK, and Australian suppliers.
Some photographers might like to duplicate the style of lith prints in the digital darkroom. It would certainly be safer. If you're committed the digital darkroom, Tim Rudman's breathtaking prints can still serve as an inspiration. I generally prefer traditional prints for black-and-white photographs, as they convey a depth that is easily distinguished from digital prints when examined closely. And all lith prints will be one-of-a-kind, which could be a source of great pride or great frustration, depending on your mood. In any case, "The Master Photographer's Lith Printing Course" is a comprehensive, easy-to-follow, beautifully illustrated manual of Lith printing. I'm sure that wet darkroom printers of all levels will find this an interesting technique to try.
Nice to look at, but pass........2004-01-31
I think Tim Rudman is a great photographer and teacher. However, the whole point of this book is pretty thin. Back when I was in grad school, I thought I would impress Nathan Lyons by telling him that I wanted to do an entire portfolio in Bromoil prints. "At some point, you have to decide if you want to be a technician or a photographer." Was his typically clipped reply.
It was good advice that has stuck with me all these years though.
As a big fan of darkroom photography, I nearly choke on the words "Better in Photoshop". But truthfully, most of the lith printing techniques outlined in this book can be duplicated using Photoshop at 1/10 the price and time. Sure, you may be able to finally make something interesting out of that photo of your cat, but chances are you'd be better off spending time and money making more photographs and thinking about why you actually make them.
Not a bad diversion for those who like darkroom work, but a dangerous distraction for those attracted to making images with content.
The best.......2000-09-15
I can't imagine what posessed the last reviewer to complain about the print size of this book. It's the content that matters! This is a superb book that opens up this beautiful photographic process and makes it real, understandable and 'doable' for the first time. It is really an inspirational book as well as being practical and instructional. Tim is a great teacher and communicator. Wonderful stuuf. Thank you.

Small print makes for my first Amazon return!.......2000-07-20
I really wanted this book. I have tried to read it! The print is so very very small that it is impossible to read without a magnifying glass. I just can't do it. The sad part is, there is plenty of room on most of the pages for a larger print to have been used. It looks like it was printed with a size 8 font and maybe a size 6 under the photos. I cannot in all honesty say that I have read this book. I have looked at the photos only. If the type were readable, it would have been read cover to cover by now and I would have implemented what I had learned! What a shame that the publisher let this go with such small print. Maybe when the second edition comes out, they will print it larger. I will buy that edition when it comes out. Tim Rudman worked very hard putting this wonderful book together, only for the publishers to blow it. This will be the first book I have ever returned to Amazon.com. There's 2 boys, looking for fun........2001-07-18
Hello, and may I just say well done. Well done. Well....... done. There is nothing on the earth better, than to see just a hint of incest injected into our modern animation. Ben and the doc, our unlikely heroes (and villians) in this epic novel! A little squeeze on the knee here, and a little stroke of the ass there, and everything is kicking off well! Yes, an enjoyable book. I would like to thank Jonathon Katz. A man. A man. Oh, man, what a man! Do you think he ever surfs the web? Maybe check GOOGLE for links to Dr Katz.? Read these very reviews??? I would. And back to the truth. This book reminds me of the excellent television show, because it has the same characters! Yes, it is funny. Yes, it is cheap (Money wise). And yes, it is good. Buy It! Or steal it! But don't burn it.
SHOUTING TOWARDS DOOR: ("Thanks ma! I'll be doon in a minute!")
If Bill Gates happens to be reading this....... GET BENT!!!
Thank you for your time, any donations are welcome. I'm saving up for a boat.
Re: Katz has his own problems. I'm Dr. KATZ KRAZY NOW!!!.......1999-07-27
This book is wonderful. Buy it NOW.
It not only shows Dr. Katz as being a therapist, it shows him as that cute little bald guy we all need. Dr. Katz is CUTE!!!
This book ruled. It really did.
Ben (Dk's son) is just as cute! He's a big 25yr old softie. You don't need to watch the show to appreciate the humour either.
Dr. Katz makes seeing a psychiatrist a riot.......1997-11-25
I thought the book was very funny. If you enjoy the Dr. Katz show, you must have this book.
