5 out of 5 stars Excellent for those who actually own and live in a cottage.......2003-01-08

This book far surpassed all expectations and is a book I am using a great deal. We live in a cottage in the Sierras that was built in the 1800's and what the book has helped me with, is better understanding how to make every room usable and how important wise and imaginative one has to be when designing storage in a small room, which is what older cottages are all about.

She clearly notes on the cover under the title "designing comfortable country retreats" thus it does have a serious country leaning. And I like the fact that she realizes that cottages in different regions of the United States be they Maine, the Rockies, desert or coastal or mountain areas, evoke different feels and needs.

While it is true she speaks of cottages as get away places, I also know that thousands of families here in the Sierras live year round in cottages, just as some do in the variety of coastal towns up and down California's coast. This is a book that can be used wisely by those who do not have a cottage as simply a vacation home but as their main dwelling.

I also liked the fact the author reminded the reader that a cottage is a great place to show off small collections be it shells, teapots, small paintings, quilts etc. That a cottage can become a small piece of art.

2 out of 5 stars For those who like the expensive, yet rustic look........2001-09-26

Because I so enjoyed the Better Homes & Gardens book "Cottage Style", this book by Ellen M. Plante sounded like an excellent addition to my personal library. However, her book was a disappointment to me. While I would be happy to stay at most of the featured vacation homes for a week or so if the owners invited me for a visit, very few of the pictures reflect the look of relaxed, romantic comfort that I associate with cottage style. She does feature a few interiors with the feel of Scandnavian country that I really liked, but none of the rest had much appeal for me. A fine book for people actually planning to build/remodel a vacation home, but not for those of us who buy decorating books just because we enjoy the pictures and like to dream.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful,for a very tiny version!.......2007-05-28

I love this book, though I needed a magnifying glass to read it. Please beware that many Sellers sell the very tiny version of this book. (Most buyers will not know that two versions were issued of this book). Thus, I did not think to check the "SIZE OF THE BOOK" when ordering this decorating book, therefore when it arrived I was shocked to find it was only about 5 inches big. Yieks! It can fit in my wallet!

I think that had I ordered the regular book sized version of this book ,I would have enjoyed it more.

Other than the tiny itsy bitsy size of this book, the photos were wonderful and inspiring!

5 out of 5 stars BOOK OF THE YEAR.......2007-05-02

This is the very best deorating and idea book of the year (and in the longest time)! Since I operate my own Country Cottage Decor Store, I hunt for every new book in this category, but none has surprised me more positivly than "Comfortable Country". Wonderful journey from page to page;- Imagine the smell of crisp linens and snuggling into poofy, down pillows! You have to look through it over & over and still see new details. The reading part is also very informativ! WOW-Those pictures are true inspiration! Possible to recreate, no matter what size your budget, home and own skills! Hope to see more from this gifted author;- soon!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2007-03-14

Such a beautiful little book. It's small enough to be able to carry it around in your bag to re-read over a coffee. Lovely pictures.

2 out of 5 stars Who has rooms like this to start with???.......2005-11-15

Pretty pictures, but definitely not a practical decorating guide. For the rich and estate-home owning.
Who has rooms like this to start with? With high ceilings and lots of square footage and wide natural wood plank! ha ha. Get real. If I had windows and moldings and architectural detail like that, I could make my house beautiful by myself and wouldn't need a book!
I was looking for REAL advice and how to bring a comfortable country look to my 1300 sq. ft. 1800's country house with 7 ft. ceilings. What I got was a coffee table book, nothing more.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Book!!.......2004-03-12

This book is gorgeous!! I would definately buy other titles by this interior designer. This book isn't for anyone who likes traditional, pristine rooms full of pricey new furnishings. If your decorating style is best expressed through an eclectic, artsy mix of vintage, shabby chic, old world/mediterranean, and rustic country furnishings, then you will LOVE this book! It isn't your typical decorating book full of repetitive photographs taken from popular magazines either. Both fresh and stylish, the lovely interior and exterior photographs will inspire the reader in creating their own unique and comfortable home. Two books that are similiar to this one are "Junk Style" by Melanie Molesworth, and "The Comforts of Home" by Atlanta Bartlett. I recommend all three titles.

                  Book Description

Skipjacks and workboats, tidal rivers and coastal marshes, charming streetscapes, historic houses, and town parks with bandstands -- picturesque subjects abound along the shores of Chesapeake Bay and have long made the region a favorite among amateur and professional artists. In Painting the Eastern Shore, accomplished artist and teacher James Drake Iams combines visits to some of the Chesapeake's most beautiful places with step-by-step lessons for learning the art of watercolor painting.

This attractive volume will serve as a welcome companion for the amateur watercolorist setting out to paint on location. After offering tips on what equipment to pack, Iams gives specific directions to various Delmarva sites, tells how to set up, and suggests what to look for in a subject. He then discusses a variety of essential techniques: sketching, composition, value, color, control of the medium, capturing depth and handling perspective, wetting the paper, and methods for painting key elements such as clouds, birds, boats, sand, and water.

As he introduces readers to the fundamentals of watercolor painting, Iams leads them on a rambling, thoroughly enjoyable tour of memorable places throughout Maryland and Virginia's Eastern Shore and Delaware. Painting the Eastern Shore is illustrated with 49 line drawings, halftones, and color pictures.

                    Book Description

Treasures Underfoot is the second of two very unique books featuring designs taken from manhole covers found in cities and towns throughout Japan. Intended for quilters, the book includes two versions of each design: a full-color stylized rendition, and a black and white silhouette to aid in pattern design. Also included are beautiful full-color photos of quilts based on the designs, hand-crafted by quilt artists from England, Japan, New Zealand, Korea and the United States.

A variety of historical and cultural information is presented on cities and towns whose designs are featured in the book.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Culturally and artistically rich.......2002-12-31

Several years ago I reviewed the first book of manhole cover quilts, finding it the most unique collection of quilt designs I'd seen in a long time. The premise of that book, and its successor collection, Treasures Underfoot, is the translation of the many municipal manhole covers of Japan into fiber art. The Japanese make something of a fine art of designing coverings for the holes in their streets and sidewalks, and each community takes great pride in its contribution to the genre. MacGregor's extension of the idea was to get these designs off the street and into quilts, and she enlisted the talents of quilters world-wide to assist her. In this beautifully-produced and self-published volume, MacGregor features dozens of new manhole cover designs, along with thumbnails of the communities that created them. Each one is then enriched by interpretation by a quilter and a rendering in fabric. Some of the interpretations try to be true to the original design, while others use elements of the design as inspiration for something new. Either way, the result is beautiful and fascinating. The book does not include projects with detailed instructions, but there is enough information and illustration to make it possible for any quilter who chooses to try her hand at one of these round treasures. And this is one of the best introductions to Japanese culture that I know! Kudos to Shirley MacGregor for making this volume even richer than the last.

                    5 out of 5 stars Impressively Unique!.......2001-11-04

I also own MacGregor's first book. The quality of the paper in the second book dramatically enhances the presentation of the manhole covers and quilts. Though I am not a quilter, this book can still be appreciated for its artistic and cultural richness. In fact, I have a custom made stain glass piece hanging in my living room, with the design from one of the manhole cover patterns in the first book. I like the geographic descriptions of the cities and towns around Japan, having visited a few in the past. The colors in her book are spectacular, and I love the way she has shown different interpretations of each pattern. All in all, this book makes me want to visit every manhole cover in it!

                    Book Description

Quilting with manhole covers is a book of designs taken from manhole covers found in various cities and towns throughout Japan. Intended for quilters, the book includes three versions of the design: a full-color rendition, a black and white silhouette, and a line drawing. A beautifully hand-crafted quilt is pictured with each design. Each chapter contains a comment on a history or culture of the community whose design is portrayed.

The preface describes how a simple quilting project, (resulting in her award-winning quilt, "Treasures Underfoot"), became a dedicated effort to bring these unique designs from the obscurity of the Japanese streets, to quilters everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars fun, beautiful work.......2001-04-21

Since I got in the habit of looking at manhole cover designs in San Diego, where I grew up, I was tickled to come across this title while looking for another book (Omeyagi). I loved it, very interesting and beautiful to look at. Almost inspired me to actually sew something, but I managed to overcome the feeling. I'm not a quilter, but I like to read about quilts and buy them. I recommend this book highly.

Quilting with Manhole Covers was a gift that I have thoroughly enjoyed. It takes your imagination beyond the traditional approach and shows quilting ideas in everything around you, even underfoot. I especially like the line-drawing for each design. The color illustrations get my creative juices flowing.

MacGregor's book contains a beautiful display of manhole cover quilting. Artfully arranged, pleasing to the eye and other senses, this quilting is truly an artform unlike any other! Inspiring and yet undaunting, the author leads you to believe there is beauty in everything-- you, too, can see it and capture it; or, in the least, enjoy such art through her book.

What a wonderful, eye-opening book! A terrific slant on quilting. These are not just quilts but rather works of art. A beautifully illustrated collection of georgeous untraditional quilts that will amaze you. A great book for your quilt or art book collection!!!!

                      Book Description

They lie underfoot, embellished and gleaming. They seal off and provide entry to an underground world of conduits, water mains, power lines, and sewers. They appear by the thousands in our cities, but very few people ever look at them or think about them as art. At once completely ordinary and totally unexpected, manhole covers present an infinite variety of design in the commonplace as well as a record of defunct utility companies, forgotten business firms, and obsolete foundries. Manhole Covers documents this singular form of urban industrial art and its place in American culture.

Mimi and Robert Melnick first revealed their obsession with street hardware twenty years ago in a remarkable little book called Manhole Covers of Los Angeles (1974). Printed in a small format and a limited edition, it quickly went out of print and is now a scarce collector's item. But that was just an introduction to their larger project, which has come to fruition in this book of 200 photographs and an extended narrative documenting manhole covers throughout the United States and discussing the history of their use, manufacture, and function.

A subject that at first seems straightforward and commonplace becomes redolent and poetic in the Melnicks' hands, for their hieroglyphic reading of manhole covers reveals a chapter of urban history that can only be recovered from the logos and markings of these early disks. There are square lids, convex lids, perforated lids. And the older ones wear an astonishingly diverse range of anything-but-blank faces expressed in raised crosses, waffle grids, cut-out diamonds, radial stars, floral patterns, and honeycomb treads. The diversity of design corresponds to an equally diverse typology of form and function, as indicated by their evocative labels: handholes, vents, coalholes, grates, lampholes, storm drains, steam covers, meter lids, traffic buttons.

5 out of 5 stars My Aunt and Uncle's Book.......2000-01-13

Mimi and Robert Melnick are my aunt and uncle. Uncle Bob is my father's brother. A lifelong non-smoker, Uncle Bob died of lung cancer in his late fifties. Uncle Bob and Aunt Mimi became objects of mild derision in my family when they first announced their project of documenting the manhole covers of Los Angeles and beyond. We found it a somewhat frivolous and Quixotic project; in a word, flakey. My wall-to-wall shag carpeted and formica topped parents thought Bob and Mimi were a little eccentric. Memory is fragile. My memory of them is fading and full of holes. I know that their house was full of antique farm implements. A large tangled mass of found wire hung above their mantle. Their fireplace screen was made of chains of old soda can pull tops. I know that I am wrong about this but I remember books in their library covered in yellow paper and shelved backwards. My parents were amused and puzzled that Bob and Mimi liked to vacation in Bakersfield but my aunt and uncle must have found something very rare there that my parents did not have the patience to see. I didn't really know what sort of incredible treasure Bob and Mimi were until Uncle Bob was dead and Mimi no longer attended our family gatherings and holiday dinners. I am very sorry that I didn't know them better but I loved them very much and their example inspired me to try to find a place for the whimsical or extraordinary in my life. You will find their book beautiful and strange. It is beautiful not least because Mimi and Bob found art and design, found humanity and dignity, in a gritty and ignored urban artifact. And this is pioneering work. Very few before them sought life in the abused quotidian. Now such books documenting the gorgeousness and variety of everyday or even debased objects are rather common.
