Good hotel pictures.......2007-08-29
Nice little book. It's essentialy a book of pretty pictures of European hotels, and only contains basic info. However it does this well. Probably only good if you're just wanting to look at the design aspect of hotels. Quite enjoyable to leaf through.

When I was fresh out of college many moons ago and I have literally no experience or ability to draw even a stick man and that is the truth, a friend of mine at church was a kindergarten teacher and she referred me to the Ed Emberly drawing books and oh my. Happy happy day for me. ANd I used these with my now grown kids. They go step by step and start with like a circle and then add the ears and he creates so many fun books. The thumbprint books of his are fun activities to do with your children that any age loves, it is just too much fun, pretty soon the neighbors will be dropping in because they heard of the Emberly fun going on at your house. All of his books are marvelous, just get one and you will be sold !!!!!
GREAT BOOK WITH FUN IDEAS!!!.......2007-02-28
My kids age 8, 5 & 2 1/2 all love making the figures from this book. It really inspires them to be creative & the drawings are easy to follow!! My 2 yr old can make his own cards with his own fingerprints.(We made thank you cards with colored ink & these cute ideas) I helped him finish off the pictures, but we all have a fun time!
Ed Emberley's COMPLETE drawing book.......2007-02-06
This book gives a thorough selection of holidays, themes, and a wide variety of thumbprints to choose from. There are step by step sections for the beginner. The examples provide good color ideas as well.
In addition to using ones' thumb, the book encourages pinky finger prints, or even using just the tip of any finger. A great first thumbprint book!

I used this book for 400 Girl Scouts at a day camp. The fingerprint animals and people worked for all ages and the girls loved to try new things from the book. Thanks for all the great fingerprint ideas. :)

I was not familiar with this book before I bought it; however, it was recommended by the teachers of the students for which this and several other Ed Emberley books were purchased. From the thank yous I have received, this book was a real hit! It is used in a Native American Mission School with great enthusiasm and even better results. What more could you ask for?

Neat Idea for a Gift.......2006-03-04
I bought this for my niece's 5th birthday along with about 10 different colors of kid's washable stamp pads (from an education store and from a craft store). It is my understanding that some of the stamp pads used for "stamping" take awhile to dry and are permanent (not a good combo for kids--I could see them on the clothes and smudged across the paper) GET THE KIDS THE QUICK DRY WASHABLE KIND OF INK! Hampton Art made the kind I purchased. They also make a "smelly" version. Grape, bubble gum, etc. Though this would be a hit, I had a budget. Anyway, you want different colors of ink to make all of the different, fun characters. I put the pads in a box with a black liquid ink pen. She seemed very interested. Her mom thought it was neat and her other aunt who is a first grade teacher looked it over and asked where she could get one for her class. I wish I had this book when I was a kid. Very cool. I would say that this book could be for all ages but is most appropriate for elementary age children and younger.

My kids have had a ball with these. Only thing...be sure you spend the extra $ for kids washable stamp pads! I used regular cheapo dollar stamp pads....uh uh. Won't wash off very easy!

In 1971, as the race for the presidency heated up, the artist Philip Guston (1913-1980) created a series of caricatures of Richard Nixon titled Philip Guston's Poor Richard. Produced two years before Watergate and three years before Nixon's resignation, these provocative, searing condemnations of a corrupt head of state are remarkable, prescient political satire. The drawings mock Nixon's physical attributes—his nose is rendered as an enlarged phallus throughout-as well as his notoriously dubious, shifty character. Debra Bricker Balken's book is the first book—length publication of these drawings.
A visual narrative of Nixon's life, the drawings trace Nixon from his childhood, through his ascent to power, to his years in the White House. They incorporate Henry Kissinger (a pair of glasses), Spiro Agnew (a cone-head), and John Mitchell (a dolt smoking a pipe). They depict Nixon and his cohorts in China, plotting strategy in Key Biscayne, and shamelessly pandering to African Americans, hippies, and elderly tourists.
As Balken discusses in her accompanying essay, these drawings also reflect a dramatic transformation in Guston's work. In response to social unrest and the Vietnam War, he began to question the viability of a private art given to self-expression. His betrayal of aesthetic abstraction in favor of imagery imbued with personal and political meaning largely engendered the renewal of figuration in painting in America in the 1970s. These drawings not only represent one of the few instances of an artist in the late twentieth century engaging caricature in his work, they are also a witty, acerbic take on a corrupt figure and a scandalous political regime.

This is an amazing book. It's witty, scatalogical, AND handsome. STarting in 1969 and continuing up to the eve of Watergate, American modern artist Philip Guston developed a series of ruthless cartoons lampooning Richard Nixon's rise to power. Metanymic in strategy, Nixon's physiognomy is rendered as a very [...phallic] schnoz and [...similarly-themed]jowls; Kissinger is simply a pair of horn-rimmed glasses skipping along beside; etc. We see Nixon ascend from a homely quaker childhood, survive the Checkers scandal, and eventually triumph in his second bid for the presidency. We accompany him to Key Biscayne and to China...all via Guston's comic vision. This book is a must for anyone interested in the 1960s, in political cartoons, in Nixon, or in Philip Guston's career.
