Not as helpful or as interesting as I had hoped. I can find better ideas for Asian modern decorating in my vintage issues of Architectual Digest, especially from the late 1940s through 1960.
Modern Design That Shows Asian Heritage.......2005-08-24
This book on bedrooms is one of a series of books on the design of modern homes in Asia. In this book, gone are the traditional views we have in mind of the small sleeping mat on the floor of the traditional Japanese bedroom.
Instead, these homes are primarily located further south: Bali, Singapore, Thailand. Here the beds are more in the traditional western style, elevated above the floor with traditional pillows and coverings. Still however, the location in Asia, with Asian architects and customers provides for design touches that are both striking and subtlely different from the standard American design. For instance many of the designs have updated appearing mosquito netting. This reflects more on the history of the location rather than the current needs in locations where these homes are located.
Beautifully photographed and printed, this book will serve as an idea book for ideas that could well be incorporated into standard western designs.

A great book to start with.......2004-02-16
I've just started oil painting, and this book proved invaluable in helping me sort out the many, many different kinds of paint with their exotic names out there. I generally like to jump in and just experiment, but when I discovered the high price of good oil paints, I decided I needed a little book knowledge first. This book costs about the same as a good tube of paint, and saved me from buying many colors that, before reading the book, I didn't realize I wouldn't really need (at least to start with). It's one of clearest, most concise books I've read (on any subject). Every word is one of wisdom. If you're new to mixing paint, or having trouble figuring it out, get this book (it doesn't really cover HOW to paint though).
A True Labor Saving Book.......2003-06-02
The first thing I always did with a new set of paints was create color swatches and mixes. Now that my paint sets are more expensive I hate to waste paint on swatches that I'll probably put in some "safe" location in the studio...never to be seen again. Here I can reference swatches of commonly used colors, opaque and transparent in a range of media. Sidaway also includes the best history of pigments that I've read to date - answering a question about phthalo blue that's been bugging me for years (when was it introduced? 1936.) This book is no substitute for learning about your palette, but does provide information on how to select an appropriate palette.

It covered the basics of color and technical terms "hue, shade, tint" It has a section about the history of pigments and dies and what they used to be made of that is interesting. One brown paint used to be made of ground up mummies.It discusses the mixing of color in many different media.

Good Technical book.......2003-12-17
I bought several book before this one looking for the information I wanted, and this book has been the best so far. It covers technical and practical information on oil painting supplies, paints, canvas and canvas prepping.
This book is NOT a book on actual painting skills and techniques, (Shading, lighting, brush strokes, styles, etc...) This IS a great book on your artist tools, paints, brushes, and work prepping which is a subject that is not readily covered in most books, and I feel is just as important for a good painting.

A well written book with plenty of technical informations. I could do without the techniques described that have to do with (for instance) incorporating beads in the oil painting (quite tacky in my opinion).
What it lacks is information on mixes such as including alkyd with regular oil painting or amulsion techniques, etc......
A great reference book for artists.......2001-06-24
Although starters may find "new" things more often than professional artists when reading this book, I give this book a 5-star rating as a reference book. The book covers from material, tools, to brushstroke and other techniques in oil. In brief, readers can learn what to buy to prepare painting in oil, how to put material together (canvas, priming canvas, etc...), and how to achieve painting effects that help express ideas in oil.
How much better someone's painting gets after using this book may vary from individual to individual, but this book is definitely a must-have for any oil artist.

Pretty good book.......2007-01-11
Although I am an experienced Linux user and do some Admin, I'm on my current project developing a linux embedded system that will be a router. We have QoS and netfilter requirements and I found nearly all the data on QoS old and dated for the 2.4 kernel. Furthermore, due to lack of info I had a hard time developing basic test scenarios.
After reading this book, I feel much better preparred for the project. What I liked about the book was the real world examples with some sense of humor. Even on a dry subject like network packets I was able to read thru the book easily. The tc examples and kernel config was what I really needed, and the book handled that well. The book is based on kernel 2.6.14 at least in a few areas.
I'm giving the book 4 stars because I'm just starting. The book does have large and small examples but I haven't used them yet. As an intro I give it 5 stars.

This was a decent guide to filters, but most of the information you can find online for free. The book doesn't dive into enough details and most of the filters that are covered are pretty basic. If you are just getting started with filters this book might be an option for you. I was hoping for more advanced information and technique on filter use.

What's up with the three star reviews. This guy is everywhere now. He had his own filters made to alter light in an uniquely artistic way. Something different? Too much filtering? Heaven forbid something looks so good you wished you thought of it. If your not creative or don't wish to broaden your horizons - this isn't a book for you. Go home and put on your little tu- tu!
Excellent examples and explanations. Pick up any art or photo magazine and you'll see some of his work.
Filters Shmilters..........2002-07-16
I understand what the other reviewers have said about this book and agree that a good few images are heavily filtered to the point of extreme. On the other hand I think that this is necessary in the facilitation of understanding what effect certain filters can have when placed infront of the lens in different situations. More experienced photographers will be looking for the subtle and almost impercievable use of these wonderful photographic tools and I myself would have liked an emphasis on this area far more than on the bold approach. Nevertheless I feel that this is an excellent *general* work on filters and will be useful to the broadest possible audience.
There is some good technical information in here for beginners and intermediates who have little or no knowledge of filters and their uses. Meehan covers quite a bit of ground and does the usual stuff while he's at it. This is the stuff that photographers like myself see over and over again in almost every photography book which every photo book feels it necessary to reproduce over and over again adnausium. Some of the images in this book are excellent and the theory is right on, so if you are a photographer looking for a filter book that will rock your prospective bookshelf, maybe this isn't the book for you, but I have found it generally pleasing and it has it's place among my photo books without any complaints from me.
Theory is fine, but example images could be better........2002-01-21
I came across this book in the local library. The book has a fair amount of colour theory and some in depth coverage of the different filters available. Unfortunately the example images are another story. Most of them show heavy unnatural filtration and many pictures are really strange. For example, the picture of a building on page 40 has been shot with such heavy magenta filtration, I doubt anyone would attempt anything like this in real life. In the example on page 66, all the buildings have turned magenta. There are some more extreme examples on pages 31, 90 and 91.
In a book on filters, I would have expected such examples to be the exception rather than the norm (probably to illustrate what one can do with a strong red or magenta filter, etc). If the author wanted to show the effects of such heavy filtration, he could have chosen better or more appropriate examples.
Outstanding.......2001-02-26
... I have always been overwhelmed by the seemingly infinite number of
filters available and used by professionals. This is the first
material I have ever found that not only explains the different types
of filters but also explores the science how they work. I now feel
more confident using filters and am better able to anticipate their
effects. Far from being focused on "special effects", this
book is a great reference for anyone looking to enhance their
photographs through the use of filters.

I used this book for a recent class in Analog Filter Design. This book is an excellent reference and learning tool for filter design. Overall This is the best textbook I have used.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A563123. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Interference and jamming signals are a serious concern in an operational military communication environment. This thesis examines the utility and performance of combining adaptive temporal filtering with adaptive spatial filtering (i.e. adaptive beamforming) to improve the signal-to-jammer ratio (SJR) in the presence of narrowband and wideband interference. Adaptive temporal filters are used for narrowband interference suppression while adaptive beamforming is used to suppress wideband interference signals. A procedure is presented for the design and implementation of a linear constraints minimum variance generalized sidelobe canceler (LCMV-GSC) beamformer. The adaptive beamformer processes the desired signal with unity gain while simultaneously and adaptively minimizing the output due to any undesired signal. Using the LCMV-GSC beamformer with a least mean squares (LMS) adaptive algorithm, it was shown that the tapped delay line (TDL) adaptive antenna array is more effective for the suppression of wideband jammer suppression than the linear array sensors (LAS) adaptive antenna array. Also a new technique for adaptive beamforming is presented which improves wideband interference suppression in a frequency-hopped environment. The output SJR improvement for the new technique compared to the conventional technique is as much as 15dB. Sometimes, multipath signals and jammers generated by a smart enemy are correlated with the desired signal which destroys the traditional beamformer's performance.

I'd give it five stars if there were a few more pages with more exampes..., but this book very definetly gives you the basics of using filters to creare moods, and correct for unusual lighting you may encounter...or desire... If you want to move beyond the basics of point, click and hope, this will take you where you want to go!!!
Good tips -- loaded with ideas for beginners, intermediates.......2001-01-09
This book contained lots of useful tips and ways to make filters at home. Can save a lot of money by not buying the expensive filters and just making your own.
Each technique was shown with photographs of the scene without the filter and then with the result of the technique. Each technique was described well, easy to follow and most came with diagrams.
