Book Description

A practical text for learning how to design buildings in the classical tradition today.

An exceptionally approachable, thorough, informative guide to the theory and technique of designing classical buildings, as taught by a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts. Generously illustrated with sketches, freehand diagrams, renderings, and photographs, this book gives a lively, contemporary reality to what sometimes seems a remote subject. 200 photographs and line drawings.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A superb introduction to classical architecture.......2006-11-02

This book was recommended to me by an architect. It clearly explains and illustrates the basic principles of classic architecture. The drawings and photographs are particularly well chosen. Though this book is not a difinitive guide, it is the best book that I have found for the reader looking for a basic understanding of the principles. I particularly enjoyed reading the chapter on "the ten timeless cannons" of classical architecture as well as the chapter entitled "The language of classical architecture: fifteen things to know."

I think that the reader would find it very useful to combine reading this book with another book: Traditional Construction Patterns, by Stephen A. Mouzon.

I highly recommend Classical Architecture, which was written in association with (and recommended by) CLASSICAL AMERICA.

5 out of 5 stars Superbly filling a need.......2005-11-07

THis book is a critically important and necessary tool for anyone wanting to understand classical architecture, whether to gain greater appreciation of historic buildings or in order to make new ones. Professor Gabriel's book is intended as a textbook for the study of classical design, whether in a formal architectural course or independently. In pursuit of this aim, the book presents thorough treatments of the major principles and techniques related to the discipline. His presentation of the underlying principles of classical planning, the orders, proportion, and ornament are very accessible and complete. The author manages to de-mystify the subject, while at the same time giving us an enhanced sense of the artistry behind all the examples he uses. Exhaustive treatment of the individual subjects is not his aim, but I found his comments both informative and subtle. Readers wishing to pursue any of the subjects in greater detail can avail themselves of the many references cited.
One the great advantages of Gabriel's book is that it includes so many examples from his native French tradition. Americans tend to know little in detail about French architecture and theory. This book deepens our acquaintance with the well-known architects, such as Mansart and Ange-Jacques Gabriel, but also introduces lesser known and modern French masters, most notably Emilio Terry.
Gabriel's instruction in watercolor wash rendering technique is very helpful, and the examples he illustrates, all by his former Syracuse University students, demonstrate that these skills can be learned and a high degree of proficiency attained today.
I found the book excellent in presenting this material in a way that appeals to both younger and more mature students of design. It is a welcome and needed resource.

3 out of 5 stars Not What The Title Says.......2005-10-08

i am of two minds about making classical, beaux arts buildings today. on the one hand it does make for fine and elegant buildings. i believe that it is easier for a mediocre designer to produce a decent classical building than a decent modernist building. but i have misgivings about building 21st century buildings aping the style but not the construction systems of 300 years ago. we can't build they way they did, classical buildings today are like stage sets, they look great, but behind the canvas, it's all ropes and scaffolding. so, i was interested to read how and why to do classical buildings in the 21st century.

the author, jean francois gabriel, one of the last graduates of the ecole des beaux arts in paris, now teaches in the united states. he has legitimate classical credibility, unlike graves or the krier brothers.

it is a peculiar book, one part manifesto, one part text book, one part pattern book. it satisfies in none of these catagories. it seems to be written for the student, but has sections clearly directed at teachers, and has appeals to professionals to jump on the classicist bandwagon. the illustrations, many of them hand drawn in ink by the author or hand rendered in washes by his students, are lively, lovely, and engaging. i wish the same could be said of the text. the text is clear, but suffers from poor relationships between the prose and the subject illustrations, making reading somewhat difficult and jerky as your eye scans for the appropriate illustration.

the book's biggest problem, in my opinion, is that it lacks two crucial chapters. had it had a chapter on the orders, described in detail how the orders are rendered, their parts, the proportions of each part to the others, and a chapter on beaux arts planning and methods of composing buildings in plan, this book would have been far more useful to students, teachers and professionals. the orders are discussed, but not in depth or detail. thomas gordon smith's book, classical architecture/rule & invention provides a fine example of what is missing with regard to describing the orders. and frustratingly, the only mention of beaux arts organizational planning is a single throw away line about using axises and enfelades. okay...how?

the organization of the book seemed peculiar to me. in the midst of the discussions of how to treat rooms and outdoor spaces, there is a chapter on how to make watercolor wash renderings, followed by more chapters about massing and facades. the rendering chapter might have been better omitted, or placed at the end as an appendix.

there is little discussion of why classical architecture should be adopted in the 21st century, nor is there any discussion of how classical architecture gets adapted to the very different needs, uses and building types of the 21st century. it's a pretty book, i love the drawings, but of very limited usefulness to students, teachers or professionals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the book.......2006-11-30

I actually enjoyed the book. It gives you an idea on the ruffles and how the clothing drapes the body. Really helpful if you are creating a character with frilly clothing. This book also has some poses that will be very helpful if you get stuck on a certain pose. It has posing in chairs with the legs crossed (one that I say can be very difficult!), reclining, kneeling on one leg, bowing, and so on. If you are looking to draw characters from the feudal era (like inuyasha) or a shrine maiden/ or maid, then this is definately a book for you. It isn't for beginners though, I think it may be more for those along the levels of intermediate and above. For those who are weary of nudity, then this is also a book for you, It doesn't contain any nudity at all.

4 out of 5 stars Another reference book.......2004-11-23

This book has pertinant details you should know about maids and miko, even some historical background and currently practices and views on these positions today. There are a vide variety of poses in front, side, and back views that will come in handy when you're stumped.

What I didn't like about this book is that it the costume focused in the examples pages are all the same: mostly medium length dress with the occasional mini-skirt and long dress (to knees) uniform. This is good in referential terms for creases and all but you have to extend that and actually use your imagination to come up with actual maid costume designs and so forth to get something like the front cover. Miko dress is all the same so you don't have that problem.

All in all, this is mainly a referential book much like the 4th HTDM volume: Dressing your Characters in Casual Wear. The examples are drawn in the more realistic end of manga drawing style. This book is recommended to those who will be making a Maid manga, Miko manga, or have a character in these two areas. Otherwise, I advise you to save your $20.00 for something else you need until you have to draw a maid or miko and haven't yet learned how to draw them. Kid friendly book, no nudity present.

4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2003-03-25

This book is especially good for those looking to improve their knowledge of how fabric hangs on the body, and/or if one wants to understand how traditional miko outfits actually work. Not just for maid outfits, but for any girl character who may wear a frilly dress, it is very helpful.. with views from all directions...and detailed information on areas that may be the most difficult, such as ruffles, sleeves, back views, etc. It's not for beginners, but it's a great addition to any "How To Draw Manga" collection. I loved it!

I particularly like Jim Zucerman's way of giving advice. He has several images per chapter, and he dissects how they were taken, how they were marketed, how they were set up, etc.

Sprinkle in a few location recommendations each chapter, and this book is well worth the 24.95 i paid. The day after I bought it, his tips for photographing an aquarium came in handy. ...

    5 out of 5 stars Great inspiration.......2000-10-25

This book really helps with fine tuning your photo techniques by exploring more interesting compositions of the same subject. It touches on lighting, filters and techniques breifly and goes into more depth on marketing your images. This is a great book for someone who has been taking pictures for awhile and is looking to improve their photography and possibly start submitting photos for print. Highly recommend this book to those intermediate to advanced amatures looking to break into the world of proffessional photography, or maybe just dabble in it a little. Great book

5 out of 5 stars Business tips from the Photo Biz Expert.......2000-08-17

The nature photography market is one that is extremely diverse. Nature images are used on everything from printed stationery in the form of note cards and stationary to photographs used as advertising painted on a commerical airplane's tail. They are used as backgrounds to sell commercial products and used in text books for teaching about the environment and nature.

With such a diverse market, Jim Zukerman tackles the marketing of nature images with a clarity and skill - you feel like you are sitting in his living room having a good chat. The book is easy to read and gives the reader a good foundation on how the business works. The tips are excellent for putting together promotional packages and guidelines for selling your work. The images included with the text show how different pictures work for different markets, too.

The photographs in the book are inspiration enough for any photographer, motivating them to go out and get the same quality. But the points of how the business works and what does work and what doesn't, from the editorial to commerical markets, is fantastic. It should be on every nature photographer's shelf - for the pictures or the information! A great resource.

This review{by the way} is for the last volume of saint tail. My first one was for volume 4.
      This book includes:
The birth of Saint Tail -
When Meimi first becomes Saint Tail.
      The Christmas Present-
The story that takes place after Saint Tail's adventure in volume #6.
      Seira and Sawatari-
Seira and Sawatari spend time together.
It also has some character notes and sketches, plus two short stories.

      5 out of 5 stars Saint Tail & Ruby........2003-09-14

I don't think this book is boring at all, considering I look at it so much.
      1st chapter:
Kids want to see a comet, but the parents won't let them. It's up to Saint Tail.
      2nd chapter:
A brother and sister need one last ingriedent to make a perfume that their dad started before he died.
      3rd chapter:
Meimi goes on a date the same day as she has to get the Greensleeves music box.
      4th chapter:
Saint Tail steals a locket. Meimi and Lina compete in a shampoo contest.

      5 out of 5 stars Very cute.......2003-07-06

Saint Tail is a story of a girl from a Catholic school who is student by day, thief by night. She steals for "lost lambs," rescuing things that were taken and returning it to them. In the meantime, a cute young detective, who is also one of her classmates at school, is on her trail. In the fourth of this adorable and highly recommended series, things are beginning to develop between thief and detective if they haven't before. Does end on a slightly suspenseful note that will leave you wanting to read more.

      5 out of 5 stars One...Two..Three.....FINALE!.......2003-01-10

This volume, volume #7 is the last of the Kaitou Saint Tail series. The actual 'story' ends in vol. #6, this is filled with Tachikawa-san's little extra stories and a few of her other small one issue mangas.
The first story is about the birth of Saint Tail. About how Meimi and Seira became friends etc. etc. the second story goes back to present and it's Christmas again and Meimi and Asuka Jr. have just become 'boyfriend' and 'girlfriend' and decide to go on their very first date. You could actually really concider THIS chapter to be the very end. Meimi becomes worried on who Asuka Jr. likes really, her or Saint Tail.
The second story is my favorite ^-^ It's the Seira and Sawatori special. I do not want to spoil this incredibly kawaii story for you. It's very...important though. That's all I'll say.
The last two stories are very cute. The first one was pretty predictable though, the second one is very cute though. No real big plot in them, just little fun fluffy stories.
I recomend this to all Saint Tail fans. This manga is not as popular as some of it's other kaitou conterparts.(Though it should, Kaitou Saint Tail started it all!) *ahem* anywas highly recomended. Very kawaii ending to this incredible series of Justice,Love, and Life.

5 out of 5 stars a nice endig for Saint Tail........2003-09-06

I think this is the best cover art out of all seven. I think this book is just great.
      In the first chapter:
Asuka jr. and Meimi go to Maju's fortune telling place.
Maju finds out that Meimi is Saint Tail.
      In the second chapter:
      Rosemary kidnaps Asuka jr..
Asuka jr. finds out that Saint Tail is Meimi.
      Third chapter:
      Saint Tail saves Asuka jr.
There are also two other bonus stories that are great.
Highly recommened if you want to see the ending.

5 out of 5 stars The "Last Volume" of Saint Tail..........2003-05-17

First of all, this is NOT the last volume. There is a seventh book which contains some very cute side stories about Meimi and Asuka, and Seira and Sawatari, as well as a few short stories.

This climactic ending of a much-loved story is wonderfully sweet, and has many moments that all the fans have been waiting for...plus, a small glimpse of what might happen to our favorite characters in the future! The action gets more intense; it's not just Saint Tail fooling the police again. She's having a battle of illusions with rival Maju and her mother, Rosemary, after they've kidnapped Asuka Jr!

The exquisite art and touching story in this manga make it well worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Ending, but Could be Better.......2003-04-11

This is supposed to be the last volume of Saint Tail (where the story ends); volume 7 is full of little stories, and book 6 also contains a few...

I thought that this was a nice volume of Saint Tail, although it wasn't as funny as the first two. However, the new thief (and former enemy of Saint Tail's mother)Rosemary provided some humorous dialogue.
I only read volumes 1 and 2 before this, so I don't know a lot about the stuff in between.
The artwork is really cute and bright, and the characters are adorable, but I think that the ending was a little bit weak.
Oh well! Nevertheless, this should be very enjoyable for any Saint Tail fan!

5 out of 5 stars The author really knows comedy!.......2003-06-06

I didn't know that this series would be so cool, magical, and hysterical. To think I was kind of scared to try this series out, to think I'd waste my money on it. But, boy, was I wrong. People who like chuch magic/magic shows, and just plain comedy might like this series. This author ranks up with naoko takechi and clamp.
In the first chapter S.T returns a doll to it's owner.
In the second chapter a new student joins Asuka Jr.'s attempt to catch S.T. And S.T steals a painting.
In the third chapter S.T steals a dagger.
In the fourth chapter S.T. steals back a baseball player's glove in time for his game.
In the sixth chapter S.T steals back a design and wedding dress. And a young girl wins a wedding dress contest with the help of Meimi.

I thought that this was a very addicting and entertaining volume of Saint Tail (Saint Tail was originally Kaitou Saint Tail before it was translated, I think). To be honest, I used to avoid reading it because I thought it would be something like Sailor Moon, which I never bothered to read a single page of...(honestly!) because that sort of shojo style of drawing just didn't seem to pop out at me. (Explanation: I usually read manga from CLAMP)

So, I started reading Saint Tail because an article in a manga magazine recommended this as a delightful series. Now, Saint Tail is one of my favorite manga series, although I've only read volumes 1 and 2.

Please note that it might be annoying for people who absolutely can't tolerate repitition to read the "One...Two...THREE!"'s in every chapter, since that is how Meimi turns into Saint Tail and also how she performs many of her magic tricks. Also, Meimi's friend and nun-in-training, Seira, always says "The good lord will help you" after listening to people's problems.

However, the stories are very interesting to read over, and the artwork isn't very bad, either. The love/hate relationship between Meimi and Asuka Jr. is very tangled, which allows numerous bits of comedy to appear all over the place- usually in school. Also, the characters are sooo cute! (Um...except for Lina...) This is probably best for pre-teens, although young teens might like it as well.

That said, I'll sum everything up with a quick and poorly internally cited quote:

If you're looking for something sweet, Kaitou Saint Tail is sure to please (Animerica Extra Vol. 2.11, page 3?).

Asuka Jr., the son of a famous detective, who is determined to be the one to catch the thief, pursues her.
As much as I would love to give all manga books five stars and a perfect rating I cannot. This book is very entertaining but it lacks some of the qualities that catch the older readers eye.
The art is very cute and it is a great story, but I would not recommend, "guess purchasing" this book, as I would call it unless you like a large variety of manga. But please don't get the wrong idea. It's a great book for people 15 and under. 15 might be the limit though. (I being 16 cannot give you the younger reader's review)

5 out of 5 stars The Chase is on!!!.......2001-11-22

Well if you liked the first and believed it to hold more room for the 2nd one in the series you are correct. Even though the plot lines were still a little cheesy. I thought it was much better and now there is more tension between Asuka Jr. and Saint Tail(A.K.A Meime) It was really sweet and it's a little funnier than the previous. If you thought the first one was so-so or pretty good than this one is a must!!! It's just starting to get good and leaves off kind of on a cliffhanger, and like I said earlier the Asuka Jr. is pretty close to catching her. I won't get into too many details but it's a must have!!!!!
