Book Description
In Chasing the Perfect writer/designer Natalia Ilyin delivers her astute, incisive, and humorous observations on design and the world it has molded. According to Ilyin, "Modern design is based on deeply idealist notions, and its inherent perfectionism has dovetailed beautifully with our commodity-based economy's need to keep people itching so that they will buy things and keep the society chugging along. I began Chasing the Perfect because I started to become aware of this collusion, this silent pressure that a language of design based in perfectionism had brought to bear on how I developed as a person." Chasing the Perfect is especially relevant in our times as interest in graphic, industrial, and architectural design moves more and more into mainstream culture. Each of the 10 chapters features Ilyin's accessible and often hilarious writing, which is highlighted with a broad range of images--some quite unexpected--from the designed world around us. An excerpt: "The choices that designers and architects have made in the last hundred years silently mold us, silently direct us through the tunnels of Penn Station or up to the fifty-third floor of the Sears Tower. But they direct more than our movements. They direct us to notice one thing and not another, to value one thing over another, to identify with one thing rather than with another. Modernism, the guts of it, the strength of it, the egotistic beauty of it, carries with it effects we did not expect and fosters attitudes about ourselves and others that may have been dandy in a utopia, but do little good in our world. Why have we not changed this idea, moved on with our thinking? For even after the disbanding of the Bauhaus, the disintegration of the International Style, the exhausting of postmodernism, we're all still chasing the perfect."

Excellence All the Way Around.......2006-10-19
In ordinary hands, modernist design theory might be a dry and dusty topic, but Natalia Ilyin brings it to life and makes it fascinating. She draws you in with beautiful writing, humor, and razor-sharp perceptions; and along the way, she delves deeply into art -- and into life itself. It took courage to stand up to the current mode of design education. As a writer, Ilyin chased the perfect, and she caught it. And she did it with insight and grace.
will make you see the world in new ways.......2006-10-18
I LOVED this book. Ilyin weaves together BIG, thought provoking ideas and deeply personal insights (that resonate as much for me as they do for her), and does it in amazingly elegant prose. This book is profound, thoughtful, and beautifully written. AND fun to read! I recommend it highly!
Great quick read on visual design education and Modernism.......2006-05-26
Natalia doesn't delve deep into intellectual arguments here, but she does open many doors leading to rooms of questsions about the state of design education in America and it's seemingly unwavering championing of Modernism. She ties this in with her personal life and how she came to question her modernist education - this might be a turn off for academics seeking pure thought and data.
I'm looking forward to her expanding on the ideas she brings up in this book!
Book report.......2006-03-08
I'm finishing up with "Chasing The Perfect" by Natalia Ilyin and when I'm done, I'm going to read it over again.
In my periodic browsing of the Graphic Arts section at B&N I became a statistic and fell for the cover. Bauhaus period minimalism...always gets me. Hmmmm, words on Modernist design from a nutty professor at RSD? Cool.
Went home, logged on, pressed a button and waited...
She's talking about the influence of the "Modernist" aesthetic on our design sense, on our basic human qualities and the effect on society. The unspoken idiom: the crafty subliminal itching that keeps us moving, to desire the next best thing...the perfect. Here's a hint: "Moo".
Scholarly, eloquent, silly and self deprecating. Heady subjects made tangible, this is my kind of read! So many levels of satisfaction, all feeding the creative spirit. This book is an epiphany for delinquent designers who are questioning conformity...that would be me.
Besides the stated subject of examining why we strive towards ever elusive perfection and the resulting mess...Ilyn uses personal example and anecdote, much of which serendipitously occurs in locales I currently inhabit (NY), as well as the landscapes of mind I travel. Anxiety, doubt, depression, hunger, bewilderment, excitement, joy, anger, nincompoopery. Ilyn wrote about herself, but she wrote for ME! The insights are piled high, personal and potent. Plus there are pictures!
I have been improved for having read: "Chasing The Perfect". I would recommend for anyone with a brain.
a brilliantly witty and deeply personal guide to life.......2006-01-16
I recommend this book wholeheartedly. I am a theoretical physicist and a writer, so what do I know about design theory and ironic distance? Nothing. But this book is not for designers alone. Rather, it is nothing short of a brilliantly witty and deeply personal guide to life, a heartfelt beacon on the darkling plain "where ignorant armies clash by night" showing us the way to a more joyous and messier life. I came to this book because I'm a fan of Natalia Ilyin's earlier book "Blonde Like Me," which just like this book, is also chock full of fabulous writing and heart-warming insights.

Book Description
Peggy Macnamara, the only artist-in-residence at Chicago's Field Museum, shares her unique "No-Fear" approach to capturing all forms of wildlife in living, luminous watercolor. Co-author Marlene Hill Donnelly, Field Museum Scientific Illustrator and third-generation painter, discloses in-depth information on color, paint properties, and design learned over a lifetime of art study and practice. In Painting Wildlife in Watercolor, Peggy demonstrates her singular method, which relies on a gradual layering of washes that eliminates the rigid and disaster-prone formulas of traditional watercolor painting. Peggy and Marlene provide clear and simple instructions for any beginning to advanced artist wanting to know about creating life-like renderings of everything from fur to feathers, along with Peggy's detailed illustrations of a vast range of both familiar and exotic animals.

Informative and entertaining.......2006-11-02
An informative book that gives advice and examples to demonstrate ways to incorporate the techniques into your own work. It's not a "this is my work and how I did it" book with no application beyond the author's included photos. If you're an artist, or just interested in watercolor, it's a good read!
A wonderful book that teaches great techniques!.......2004-03-08
I took classes from Peggy years ago. I had forgotten some of her techniqes and ordered this book...reading it is like being back in class. She goes through her amazing process step by step with color photographs and clear instruction. This is a valuable watercolor technique book, don't pass it up if you are serious about making some eye popping wildlife paintings.
Thank you Peggy!
Very informative.......2004-02-03
I received this book for Christmas and was very impressed. It has so much information and great pictures. I am a self taught beginning water color painter. Very well written book that I could understand. I just hope she comes out with more.

Buy this book and save yourself thousands of dollars literally. As a student of Peggy at the Art Institute of Chicago I know. I paid tons of money to go to art school. Almost everything I learned from Peggy you can learn from this book. Plus it is an excellent showcase of her artwork. One of the best draftsman you'll ever see. Stop reading this and go buy it.
Fearless technique to painting wildlife.......2004-01-07
This book is outstanding! Peggy shows approaches to watercolor that make if fun for the beginer as well as an advanced painter. Her tecniques could be used in many aplications, not just wildlife. A beautifuly written and illustrated book.

The cover art hardly does justice to the wonders that lie in store for you within the pages of this glorious tribute to our feathered friends. Maryjo Koch's informative, hand-lettered text is drawn from her own observations in the field, as well as literature, science, and mythology. It includes quotes from notable figures such as Edgar Allan Poe, Miguel de Cervantes, and Henry David Thoreau: "How can you expect the birds to sing when their groves are cut down?" Discover fascinating tidbits, such as how the tailorbird actually stitches its nest together using its beak as a needle, tying knots as it goes along. Though it's not an encyclopedic A-Z edition, you'll find information about the tiniest bee hummingbird, laying eggs in her thimble-sized nest, as well as the eight-foot-tall ostrich laying grapefruit-sized eggs weighing almost three and a half pounds.
More remarkable than the text, however, is the incredible variety of images included in one single book. The hand lettering takes the form of an egg or the flowing pattern of a bird in flight, or simply creates a design on its own. Koch's images include fairly straightforward naturalist paintings along with more imaginative ones, such as the charming illustration of a menu from the Blue Bird Inn, with selections including the common earthworm, poison oak berries, and hundred-legged centipedes. This is definitely a book well suited to bird lovers and art lovers of all ages.

Bird Egg Feather Nest.......2001-06-18
Mrs. Maryjo Koch
Subject: Bird Egg Feather Nest
Dear Mrs. Koch:
Congratulations on creating an absolutely beautiful book! Words fail in trying to express my respect for your unique and scholarly approach to this universally appealing subject. Your presentation is at the same time unbelievably detailed, yet still is not pedantic or boring. I especially love your artwork and the imaginative way you have used hand-lettered "swatches" to describe the associated drawings.
I have carefully observed the dozens of kinds of different wild birds in our backyard. I even "talk" to some of them. But without your drawings and explanations, I could never understand or appreciate the amazing details of birds' eyes, eggs, feathers, beaks, talons, etc.
In particular, your revelations on nest-building is a very clear compilation of your outstanding research. But I guess my greatest admiration focuses on your chapters about EGGS, FEATHERS, and SINGING. How did you ever discover all these incredible facts? I will always be thankful that I happened to stumble over your book in our local bookstore. It has given us much joy.
My only regret is that you explain all these amazing facts by using the word `evolution'. In spite of your very scholarly approach to scientific analysis it is incomprehensible that you explain all these marvels by quoting the babbling of an unscientific dreamer like Darwin. He concocted a totally unproven theory to try to explain what he couldn't accept: that God had mandated that all these amazing ideas become a reality.
Nice work on the book, but please don't try to pretend that all these wonderful things that you have discovered happened by accident!
Thanks again for creating your Masterpiece!
Sincerely,
________ Ken Waltz
Breathtaking Nature Illustration.......1999-12-01
From the moment I picked up this book I was in awe. Ms. Koch's illustrations are absolutely incredible and should be appreciated by anyone who has ever been in the great out doors.
Snipets of bird information beautifully illustrated in detai.......1999-11-18
This book draws the reader and non-reader (18 months to old avid birders) into its pages with beautiful, detailed illustrations of birds, their nests, thier young, the vast diffeences of eggs, etc. The snipets of information range from dietary:
"Birds and humans have similar nutritional requirments ... yet differ vastly in what each finds appetizing"
to nest planning and building.
Readers can pick up the book hundreds of times, start anywhere, middle or end; and immerse themselves in bird lore, migration insight, famous quotations and familiar and exotic detailed illustrations of birds, their nests, their environment, their eggs, EVERYTHING! I recommend this book for children and even experienced birders.

A LANDMARK PUBLICATION.......2005-01-10
That John James Audubon was America's foremost naturalist there can be no doubt. That John James Audubon: The Watercolors for the Birds of America, published by Villard Books in association with the New York Historical Society, is a landmark publication there should be no doubt.
A companion volume to a museum exhibition, this magnificent presentation of 470 color illustrations is a significant contribution to the worlds of art, nature and ornithology. In addition to the stunningly reproduced art, the volume contains four excellent articles: Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr. examines Audubon's artistic development; Annette Blaugrund discusses his skills as an entrepreneur; Amy Meyers presents Audubon as a naturalist; and Reba Fishman Snyder sheds light on the technical aspects of the watercolors.
John James Audubon: The Watercolors for the Birds of America is a superb representation of the works of an artist and naturalist who knows no peer.

Great stuff, even though I hate Roman numerals........1998-02-19
Excellent scholarly work that explains and shows what Audubon did, and how he did it. As a collector of original Audubon Havell prints, I found the introductory chapters to be informative, readable and very helpful. Wonderful explanations of his technique. About eighty of the plates are rendered nearly full size in this large book. The other 390 are included in an index as full-color 3 X 4 prints. All of the 435 original "Birds of America" images are in this book as well as quite a few other Audubon watercolors that were never syndicated for printing. There are several appendices including one that lists the actual size of each watercolor. Very helpful to a collector. I especially enjoy comparing Audubon's original watercolor paintings depicted in this book, with the large, excellent renderings of the Havell prints in "Audubon Birds of America" by Tim Parmentor, also available from Amazon. My one tiny complaint is that all of the color images are designated by the Roman numerals that Audubon assigned to them. Pain in the neck. Great gift book for both art students and birdwatchers.

The author (the son of Paul Caponigro, a photographer in the tradition of Minor White and Ansel Adams) of Adobe Photoshop Master Class is a skilled art photographer who specializes in intriguing naturescapes that often employ compositing and mirroring. In this book, he shares the photographic wisdom and Photoshop methods that helped create these colorful, mysterious images.
The title is appropriate: the book is modeled after master classes with performance artists; for example, operatic training with Maria Callas. The readers get to see, in detail, Caponigro's techniques and read his philosophies. This demonstration includes Photoshop basics that apply to all types of digital imaging, including calibration, adjustment layers, variations, levels, and curves. It also covers visual principles that are essential to photography in general, like proportion, scale, light, and shadows (including Ansel Adams's Zone system), and--important in the author's own work--reflection and tessellation.
The images, which are generally devoid of the human form, have an otherworldly stillness. Their quiet intensity translates well into book form: the typography and layout resemble a museum catalog, with widely leaded, delicate lines of type. Readers who prefer skimming through how-to books for quick results will be daunted by the level of in-depth attention that this book demands. On the other hand, those who hope to use Photoshop for high-end digital imaging (not just preparing JPEGs for the Web or 600-dpi images for print) will be rewarded by the author's extensive experience and painstaking attention to detail.
Most chapters discuss different issues (e.g., color or shadows) and use Caponigro's images as examples. The discussion is in a narrative form, with quotes and references to artists of all kinds, from Matisse to Goethe. It's like gaining admission to the most competitive graduate seminar, hosted by a renowned artist-in-residence. --Angelynn Grant
Topics covered:
Techniques for using Photoshop (version 5 or higher) on fine digital imaging, including:
- Monitor calibration
- Image resolution
- Applying levels and curves to the Zone system
- Output to print or film
And photographic issues and Photoshop methods used in the author's work, including:
- Photomontage
- Proportion
- Contrast
- Color
- Multiple exposure
Book Description
Adobe Photoshop Master Class: John Paul Caponigro, 2nd Edition is no ordinary book on Photoshop. It is a true master class by renowned artist and photographer
John Paul Caponigro, in which he shares his insights and discoveries as a visual artist. Although the book contains step-by-step tutorials that deconstruct some of Caponigro's most inspirational photographic works, the emphasis is on technique and visual problem solving, enabling you to take the concepts and apply them to your own unique projects. Updated for Photoshop 7, the revised edition of this master class includes numerous new and revised chapters that explain how to achieve color accuracy and extend dynamic range, direct attention through focus, control atmospheric perspective, and more. You don't have to be a professional photographer to appreciate and learn from this beautiful and informative book—Caponigro starts out with a section covering Photoshop essentials before moving on to more advanced artistic techniques.
Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners, but an outstanding book.......2006-01-04
I have many photoshop books, and this is, by far, my favorite. However, it is not for beginners. The words "Master Class" hint at the skill level required to appreciate the book.
This book will show you how a successful artist uses the application to create composites. It doesn't hold your hand and show you step-by-step examples. Rather, JP talks about how he used the different tools in Photoshop to accomplish something and what his thinking was behind the strategy.
The chapters take time to read (JP does get a little philosophical at times), but you will be rewarded.
Good techniques but mostly about vision and esthetics.......2005-04-05
I too found the very thin and light type of this book very hard to read. However, after vowing to slog through it anyway, I found the discussions of the techniques to be well done. The problem, which can be viewed as either good or bad depending on your bend of mind, is that the author takes the reader on his personal journey of discovery of digital art. And personal journeys takes a long time and are somewhat boring for anyone else but the person himself. Starting from a photography background, I found the artistic point of view interesting, even educational and inspiring, but too much of a good thing. After a while, I started skimming the main text and reading the 'methods' summary at the end of each chapter which spelled out the techniques in a nutshell.
Best for someone with lots of Photoshop experience.......2005-02-11
I because acquainted through this book because it is a required text for a second-level digital photography class I'm taking in college. I've read almost all of it. While there is a lot of valuable information (particularly with regard to monitor calibration), this book definitely has some issues.
Firstly, Caponigro's New Age tone is ponderous and meandering, and it's difficult to discern the necessary concrete tips hidden among the adjectives. The methods, in particular, are poorly organized. I took a Photoshop class (completing Adobe's Classroom in a Book), and I found the lack of intermediary steps to be challenging.
For this reason, my instructor--after many student complaints--dropped the requirement that we complete a number of "methods" (Caponigro's term for exercises) in this book. We are now free to choose other, clearer exercises from the multitude of Photoshop books available.
Also, while I appreciate the expertise that has gone into Caponigro's artwork, I don't care for most of the work itself, and I am not alone in my view. (Just how many bilaterally-symmetrical floating rocks does a reader really need to see?) While I'm aware that this is a personal bias, it definitely affects my overall impression of the book. If Caponigro's tone was a little less arrogant, I'd let that slide, but it's a sticking point for me.
Ultimately, I am sure there are people who would find this book to be a perfect fit. I am not one of them. I would recommend that anyone new to Photoshop stay far away until they've gathered a lot of experience and patience with the program. Perhaps at that point they'd be ready.
This is a "why" book.......2005-01-16
The shelves are packed with books teaching you how to create an effect in photoshop. How many units of this, and what filter to combine with this, yadda yadda.
This book is the complete opposite. Just the first few chapters blew my mind away! When the author talked about cuves and levels, I went crazy because I never knew there was so much to understand about them. Now I feel like I really know what I'm doing rather than simply bend the curves and hope for the best. I'm reading this book after reading Photoshop CS Bible (Pro Edition) and this is far far far more in-depth. Let me make one thing clear. If it werent for the bible, I have a feeling I'd be lost in this book. You definitely need to know your photoshop well to really understand this book. It takes you from undertandint photoshop, to understanding other things related to it such as printing and color calibration. It is in my opinion very advanced level and sometimes even I am lost in the author's words.
This book is a "why" book and teaches you the reasoning behind a lot of things related to photoshop. Its like the saying, give a man a fish and feed him for one day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. In the same way, you can learn 100 different cool effects from any other photoshop book, but when it comes time to make that 101th effect, your lost and can only randomly make choices in photohop. This book explains the theory behind a lot of these things and thus when you see an ideea in your head, you know how to realize it..
This book took me a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong time to get through because its content is so heavy but otherwise, I have both my thumbs up!
Good intent but poorly written, too long, few clear examples.......2004-09-19
Mr. Caponigro may have started with the best of intentions but his writing is so bad, you have to strain to get through the material. He takes too long getting to the point and provides so little clear direction or examples, that I'm left only with his sense of self-importance, not information about Photoshop. If the he had let an editor shorten the book by half and provided more clear steps/information about using Photoshop, I would have indulged him more, but as it is, this book is of very little use for someone wanting to expand their Photoshop skills. Its the author being spiritual and groovy way past the point of usefullness.

Book Description
These four volumes collect the poetic works of eleven African-American women writing in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Volume 1 presents two collections by Mary E. Tucker Lambert-- Loew's Bridge, A Broadway Idyl, a poet's-eye view of lower Manhattan just fter the Civil War, and Poems--and Infelicia, a dramatic work by the notorious Adah Isaacs Menken. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 contain works by nine other poets, all of which were were published between 1895 and 1910, a particularly brutal era for blacks. But, surprisingly, only one of these women (Lizelia Moorer) protests the treatment of her race during this period of social upheaval and injustice. The remaining poets all conformed to the ethos of most black writers of the time, "whitewashing" their art while educating and uplifting their people. Their themes are traditional--love, nature, death, Christian idealism and morality, and family--and are for the most part couched in conventional forms and language. As interesting for the subjects that they address as for those that they ignore, these selections offer a unique smapling of poetic voices that, until now, have gone largely unheard.

Customer Reviews:
The final volume of an epic Japanese graphic novel.......2004-01-25
The JOAN saga is that rare Japanese graphic novel which is not only in full color but also complete in just three volumes. Books I and II charted the progress of Emil (née Emily) of Lorraine, a 17-year-old girl who seeks to follow in the footsteps of Joan of Arc eleven years after the French heroine died at the stake. Masquerading as a boy for reasons described in Book I, Emil tries to continue Joan's work by throwing support behind the weak King Charles VII and fighting against a coalition of nobles opposing him. Helping her maintain her faith is the vision of Joan herself who appears to Emil at key moments.
Book III, the final chapter in the epic saga (and, at 224 pp., the longest of the three), opens with a vividly detailed battle between the armies of King Charles and Dauphin Louis and its sad aftermath as Emil surveys the destruction. However, much of the rest of the volume takes place in a castle where Emil is held captive by the Dauphin and subjected to repeated brutality. (Warning: this section of the book contains some nudity and profanity.) Yet even in captivity, Emil's spirited bond with Joan is able to work miracles, leading to a most rewarding and heart-wrenching ending.
Despite the dank, oppressive settings of this part of the story, artist Yoshikazu Yasuhiko keeps things visually interesting with his cinematic eye for composition and varied color schemes designed to match the dramatic tone of each scene. Overall, the three-volume JOAN is a masterful work and arguably one of the finest Japanese graphic novels ever seen in an English edition. (This review is based on a reading of the paperback edition.)
