The Gothic cathedral is one of humanity's greatest masterpieces--an architectural feast that couldn't help but attract the attention of renowned author-illustrator David Macaulay. Once an architectural student at the Rhode Island School of Design, Macaulay glories in the intricacies and beauty of structure, as evidenced in his masterful pen-and-ink drawings in critically acclaimed children's books such as Castle, Pyramid, and Rome Antics. He begins Cathedral in 1252, when the people of a fictitious French town named Chutreaux decide to build a cathedral after their existing church is struck by lightning. We first meet the craftspeople, then examine the tools, study their cathedral plans, and watch the laying of the foundation. Week by week we witness the construction of this glorious temple to God. Macaulay intuitively hones in on the details about which we are the most curious: How were those enormously high ceilings built and decorated? How were those 60-foot-high windows made and installed in the 13th century? And how did people haul those huge, heavy bells up into the skyscraper-high towers? Thanks to Macaulay's thorough, thoughtful tribute to the Gothic cathedral, not a stone, turret, or pane of stained glass is left unexamined or unexplained. (Ages 9 and older) --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Text and detailed drawings follow the planning and construction of a magnificent Gothic cathedral in the imaginary French town of Chutreaux during the thirteenth century.

Macaulay's books.......2007-01-20
This book lives up to my expectations of David Macaulay's books in that it's very well drawn, has an abundant amount of useful information and is presented in a clear, exciting manner!
Another Macaulay Masterpiece.......2006-11-23
Second only to his magnum opus, Castle, this 1981 book continues David Macaulay's tradition of creating intricate (but welcoming and friendly) illustrations as an accompaniment to the telling of his informative tales. Taking its place in a grand series that has included Pyramid, Mill, Castle, Unbuilding, and others, Cathedral details the design and creation of one of the great Gothic churches that came to exist across western Europe during the Age of Faith. The setting here is France during the intellectually-towering High Middle Ages, and in careful steps we come to understand firstly what motivated people to undertake a construction project on such a scale, secondly how the construction was carried out, and finally how a Gothic cathedral, truly a structure that seems to soar untethered to earth, is able to stand so proudly close to a millennium after its dedication. Most marvelously of all, unlike virtually every other Medieval building, the great worship places are still largely in use today, fulfilling their original purposes and continuing on as a tribute to and testimony of the genius of those who erected them. David Macaulay is a master and a treasure, and a book like his teaches without effort. Like all great things, his books are joys to re-visit over the course of a lifetime.
An excellent masterpiece!.......2006-02-01
Words are useless to describe this masterpiece created by David Macaulay.
I have visited France (more specifically Paris, Rheims, Chartres, Chambord, Versailles, Chenonceau) and went on a "cathedral pilgrimage" to see all the greatest French gothic cathedrals.
After picking up this book in my local library, I was spellbound by the beauty of Macaulay's drawings. Macaulay is able to recreate the majesticness and grandeur of the cathedrals and draws you into the cathedral. You can almost hear the cathedral choir singing in the backround and the quite chanting of the people.
Macaulay's drawings are first rate (no wonder this masterpiece won the Caldacot Medal!)
This book should be read by everyone to show what people can achieve through determination and having a united goal.
This just occurred to me.... why do man's most significant and most beautiful works of art and architecture result from their religion?
David Macaulay's book is pure gold! BUY THIS BOOK, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!
spellbinding for children and adults alike.......2005-08-12
Like all of Macaulay's architectural books, CATHEDRAL is ripe with vivid illustrations that are both enthralling and educational to behold. The drawings not only illustrate the cathedral's method of construction, but convey the presence and majesty of the space as well. One feels the dizzying height of the tower and the formidable strength of the foundation stones. I was always amazed at the ingenuity of the laborers in completing tasks that I would have otherwise felt impossible to attemp without power tools.
While it is hard to predict whether today's children will find the book as captivating as I did in the pre-internet era, I feel that David Macaulay's books make excellent gifts to children. Not only do they stimulate the imagination, but they educate children on architecture, history and culture, and show that magnificent works can be accomplished through cooperation, creativity, planning and hard work. Not bad for a few bucks! I recommend you splurge on the hardback, because this is a book you'll enjoy literally for decades.
A wonderful introduction to architecture and the Middle Ages.......2004-01-10
Having just finished a great book called "Great Cathedrals", filled with 400 pages of jaw-dropping photographs, I kept wondering how in the world they could have built such marvelous edifices with rudimentary implements over 800 years ago. David Macaulay's "Cathedral" is a book ostensibly written for children but which will fascinate readers of all ages. In scarcely 80 pages, Macaulay takes us back in time to the year 1252 in the fictional French village of Chutreaux where the people decide to build the "longest, widest, highest and most beautiful cathedral in all of France" for the glory of God. Macaulay's text is minimal, but his exquisite black and white line drawings say it all: the step-by-step stages in the building's construction, the craftsmen and the tools they used, and the dedication that kept this project going for 80 years until its completion. We feel a sense of awe at the dedication of the original architects and craftsmen and builders who knew that they would be long dead before the cathedral was finally finished. Macaulay's glossary at the end of the book helps us to understand the major elements of the Gothic cathedral, and his cross-sections and diagrams provide clear illustration of just how the cathedral rose from its foundations. At the end of this volume, we share the awe and pride the townspeople felt at having shared a goal for over 80 years and making it a reality. Macaulay's "Cathedral" is a marvelous creation in more ways than one.
Book Description
In the past, slipcasting was primarily considered an industrial method. Today, however, ceramic artists are adapting its techniques to create a wide range of beautiful and highly individualized pieces. In this book, Sasha Wardell clearly explains and demonstrates the techniques involved and shows how they can be adapted for the studio workshop. Examples of the work of an international group of artists are used to illustrate the breadth and versatility of the work that can be created.

Lacks Good Images.......2007-09-17
Technicaly it is a good book, because it shows you exactly how the subject matter was lit, the amount of strobes used, lightboxes, etc. But, the images themselves are not very good.
Terribly out of date.......2007-09-06
Published in 2002, but full of images that would appear to be from the 1980s, this is horribly out of date. Thus, no mention of digital and the dramatic changes it has bought to studio photography and images that have dated terribly. Even as a 'technique' book this has limited value as many of the compositions are so bizarre and unusual that you are hardly ever likely to need the kind of lighting that is presented. If you are looking for a book with general advice for product and still life (which I was), this is not the one.
helpfull and creative.......2007-09-05
there is a lot of information on how to use lights and input on creative ways for solving problems in a studio. the only thing i would wish for is cheaper more minimalistic ways of coming to great results

A MUST for photographers who want to do still life photography. Lots of ideas and "how to" information. Loved it!
Must buy.......2007-02-13
As a student photographer, grabbing ideas to inspire me is no small feat, this book has a lot to share. As I have purchased a ton of books on amazon about photography, this is one of the rare finds that is definately worth the money, and more!

Zuckerman, a contributing editor to Petersen's Photographic Magazine, excels in conceiving unusual images and manipulating his equipment to make his ideas a reality. He takes the opposite approach of most of his competitors, though--instead of producing images based on an art director's guidelines, he creates first, then examines the market for his work. An avid maker of computer-manipulated images, Zuckerman advises the reader to be aware of ever-changing trends in photography. Although most of the remarkable pictures in the book were produced with a medium format camera, all of them can be accomplished with 35mm equipment.

wonderful (and wondrous) - highly recommended.......2005-07-29
This is a great book, full of practical guidance, inspirational ideas and impressive/intriguing images produced by the authors (all in about equal measure). Just as one simple illustration of the scope covered, there are example images throughout the book taken using conventional film cameras (old and new, in several different formats), pinhole cameras and digital cameras, plus others generated via photograms and from digital scanners when used as "cameras". Further, the book even includes work based on the use of found-object photographic originals (old magic lantern slides). The mixed media artwork described in the book all uses conventional photography as its basis: but, as I counted, about fifteen different techniques are outlined (sic) by which added media can be incorporated into the final presentation of the image itself. And my count doesn't include a separate section which encourages the printing of images onto bolts or segments of fabric (using tee-shirt transfer film, for example). Finally, at the very end of the book, there's a short chapter focused on depicting the passage of time via still images. Personally I feel that this is one of the truly under-explored "provinces" of contemporary creative photography - particularly given all of the digital toolkits that are available today. About the only reason for an aspiring fine art photographer not to buy this book would be if he or she wanted to find specific detailed routines for the use of Photoshop or similar photo-editing software. In that circumstance, it might be best to purchase a companion handbook, just dealing with the basic application(s) of the software by itself. But then again, he or she could wait until the author's newer book "Digital Photo Art" becomes available in the U.S. (currently it can only be found in the U.K.) ...
Idea Book, thats all.......2004-04-27
I expected to get more than ideas, but that all you'll find in this Tory Worobiec book. Very few details on how-to, and most are topics already covered in previous books.
Beautiful, for the creative process in photography.......2003-10-29
Unique treatment of possibilities attainable in print and digital photography. With the digital format seemingly assigned the future in impressionistic photography, this book treats both (to me) equally vital. High quality throughout, presents a challenge to match the abundant beautiful images pervading these pages.
Beyond Ordinary Photography.......2003-08-12
This book is aimed at the photographer who wants to go beyond "straight" photography and into the realm of the other visual artistic media. It does this by describing a number of different techniques less commonly used by photographers that can be applied to photographic images.
The techniques explored range from the traditional like multiple exposure and toning to what some might consider more avant-garde, like photograms, which are images made on photo-sensitive media without a camera, and distressed images, that is, those deliberately subjected to destructive forces. The authors recognize that the mechanics of photography are in flux and so refer to both chemical darkrooms and digital manipulation.
This is more of an idea book than a how-to book. The descriptions of most of the techniques are cursory. If one wanted to use a technique in connection with one's photography, one would probably have to do additional research. In addition, the number of examples provided in the book is necessarily limited to about a half dozen for each technique. For me, with the exception of some approaches of which I had already been thinking, that was not enough for me to see how I could apply the procedures to my own photography.
Of course, that may be a major problem with a catalogue of unusual procedures. It is difficult, or perhaps impossible, to explain how to extend one's vision so that these techniques will prove useful. I suspect that one must already have both a full understanding of, and a deep dissatisfaction with, the traditional techniques of photography as a method of expressing one's vision. If that is true of a photographer, he or she is probably already thinking about how to change the form to express his or her vision. In that case, this volume might provide a few useful ideas.
Concerning both traditional and digital working methods.......2003-08-07
Collaboratively written by photography experts Tony Worobiec and Ray Spence, Photo Art: Darkroom, Digital, Handcoloring, Montage is enhanced with two hundred color and twenty-five black & white illustrations. Photo Art is more than a just another photography collection -- it is a carefully organized and effectively presented step-by-step instructional manual which is ideal for novice photographers seeking to create art through the use of their cameras, as well as an outstanding educational resource appropriate for even experienced photographers as it provides technical know-how, advice, tips, tricks, and techniques concerning both traditional and digital working methods for taking pictures which rise to the high esthetic standards of fine art. The eye-catching full-color photographs and extensive suggestions for light, border, distinctive contrast in subject material and much more fill this memorable guide.

Book Description
The fourth in a highly successful series, this book looks at the breadth of special effects and manipulations achievable using digital technology. It is project-driven and aims to show all the processes visually and simply, allowing the digital photographer to follow the manipulations step by step with jargon-free text. Images are dealt with in four logical sections: Shoot It, Scan It, Manipulate It, and Print It.
This book answers the question "why digital?" addressing the advantages of digital versus traditional photography. It also features real-life projects, illustrating how to use digital technology to its fullest capacity.

INSPIRATIONAL!...........2001-11-16
Elinor Stecker-Orel's book is an inspiration to the serious photographer who wants to take things several steps farther and enter the realm of creating, rather than just taking, awesome photographs.
You can use the book "out of the box" as is and directly appropriate the many creative techniques she imparts, or use the book's techniques as jumping off points to inspire and fire your own imagination which will enable you to come up with additional special effects techniques on your own.
I have the benefit of both having Ms. Stecker-Orel as my instructor at the New York Institute of Photography, and as my personal friend.
In addition to her very long, distinguished list of professional credentials (Former editor of Popular Photography-still on the masthead as associate editor; seven books published; many photographic achievements, and much more) I can relate from personal experience what a dramatic difference in your photographic potential her instruction will make. She is a skilled teacher, and that comes across in this excellent book.
I was able to produce some very professional looking and unusual photographs both utilizing the techniques taught in the book, and by using those techniques for further inspiration.
Thanks, Elinor!
Not worth the money.......2001-03-11
This book illustrates photographic special effects that are sophomoric and aesthetically unappealing. It does not cater to the serious photographer, and it is poorly produced with mediocre photographic examples. After reviewing this book, I found it of no use and returned it.
Helps get the creative juices flowing.......2000-12-24
Some photographers are of the opinnion that using special effects is for the photographer that doesn't know how to produce a powerful image without using some sort of gimick. Well, I'm not one of them. I say the ends justify the means. If the picture is asthetically pleasing, you did a good job. This books presents a lot of techniques that I have not thought of using. Many different takes on using techniques such as double exposures, using items you can find at pet stors, different ideas on reflective surfaces(more than shooting pictures using mylar.) Filters, vignetters, lighting effects like using ultraviolet lights, cross-polarization and a ton more. There's also a section in the back telling you where to get items like ultraviolet lights and makeup that will glow for ultraviolet lights. All in all, a good book for those of you who like using special effects.
Awesome Book!!!.......1999-03-08
The author did a good job. Some of the people in my photography class tried some of the tecniques in her book. Two thumbs up!
Innovative and stimulating "how to" guide.......1998-12-17
After attending the author's stimulating presentation on special effects at our camera club, I eagerly purchased her book because I simply could not take enough notes nor remember all of her fascinating techniques and interesting suggestions. The book very clearly explains how to achieve many special effects with vivdly illustrated examples of each one. As an advanced amateur photographer looking for ways of pushing the envelope of creative expression, I found this book very timely for my personal goal. In using her one of her ideas for an intraclub competitive assignment, "Multi Image", my salon level color print took first place. By following another suggestion for multiple exposure, my color print won fist place in open competition. I commend the author for her enthusiastic presentation with superb slides as examples of each technique, which are reproduced in the book. The net effect was both instructional and inspirational.

Book Description
The Better Digital Photography Guides are aimed at amateur photographers who want to explore the potential of digital technology to improve the quality and range of their work, be it snapshots of family activities, records of their travels, landscapes, portraits, or still-lifes. Master photographer Michael Busselle breaks down the image-making process into three phases: Capture, Enhance, and Print. While his stunning photographs educate through visual inspiration, his clear step-by-step text simplifies all the procedures.
Nowhere is the potential of digital photography greater than in the fields of special effects and photo-art. Sitting in front of their PCs or Macs, photographers can now easily manipulate their digital images to achieve effects that, using traditional filmbased photography, could only be attempted by experienced printmakers with years of darkroom experience. And, if one experiment doesn't work, they can go back and try a different tack with a few clicks of the mouse. Each of Michael Busselle's striking images, which he uses to demonstrate the almost limitless range of effects that can be achieved, are accompanied by instructions broken down into three phasesCapture, Enhance, and Printwhich show the reader, step by step, exactly how the effect was achieved. Inspired by these examples, amateurs will quickly discover the immense creative possibilities opened up by the new technology.
