5 out of 5 stars Design Inspired by Earth and Sky.......2006-10-23

"Earth was used to create farmhouses in France, cottages in England, castles in Germany, and missions in California and Arizona. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century adobe buildings still stand today in New York, Boston, Virginia, and South Carolina." ~ pg. 35

The cover picture is a picture of Mision de Sol, a resort and spa with vibrant colors, dramatic waterfalls and beautiful adobe walls. Throughout the pages we are introduced to textures, interiors, surroundings, traditional adobes, modern adobes, adobe escapes and building materials needed to create a rugged home with romantic appeal.

The decorative iron sconces with glowing candles are inspiring and the use of reflective pools and lush plantings adds artistic appeal. I loved the bookshelves in a room with a chandelier, table with a vase of lilies and rough terra tiled floor covered with a beautifully textured red carpet.

Book Description

In their third book, authors/designers Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr forage through the mountains of Mexico and the deserts of the American Southwest in celebration of the strength and wonder of adobe design style. From its humble beginnings to its present-day renaissance, Casa Adobe unearths the homes, haciendas, and holiday getaways that have blended handcrafted details, natural materials, and cross-cultural furnishings to express the elegant simplicity of adobe living. Stunning photographs reveal the textures of both traditional and modern homes and the unique marriages between adobe's ancient simplicity and homeowners' eclectic global treasures. The interior design elements-hand-wrought iron chandeliers, punched tin and copper sconces, painted Mexican-country furniture, early American antiques, Navajo textiles, African folk art, contemporary paintings, New Mexican retablos and Pueblo pottery-are at happy communion inside the comfortable surrounds of adobe. Award-winning authors of The New Hacienda and Mexican Country Style Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr were awarded the spring 2000 Pluma de Plata (Silver Pen) from Mexico's Ministry of Tourism. They have been at the forefront of the Mexican design movement for over twenty-five years as designers, importers, and antique dealers. Based in Austin, Texas, Witynski and Carr are the owners of Texture Antiques, a gallery specializing in Mexican furniture, architectural elements, contemporary art, and accents. Individually, Witynski writes on home and garden design for national publications, including This Old House magazine, and Carr designs furniture from recycled Mexican wood. Together, they divide their time between their Austin, Texas home and the Yucatan Hacienda. a> Please visit the author's website for more information on this wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Casa Adobe.......2003-05-26

Casa Adobe is a terrific source book for those contemplating living in an adobe or any other earthen style home. Photographs with informaive descriptions tease the casual reader, while those already familiar with Mexico, Arizona, and the Southwest immediately jump head first into the well-written, beautifully illustrated text. Joe P. Carr and Karen Witynski take you to Sante Fe and the surrounding areas with early photographs of adobe structures. Then you are taken to country and contempory homes and structures that best reflect what Casa Adobe is all about. The last chapter of the book is especially helpful foranyone interested in adobe, stucco, or rammed earth homes. It gives sources and individuals to contact as well as galleries and suppliers. My next purchas will be Casa Yucatan, written and photographed by the same collaborative authors.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review--New Mexico Magazine.......2002-06-09

Many people find the lines and textures of an adobe building at once seductive and compelling. This book is all about the unique aesthetic of houses made of mud. Third in a series of four books on popular residential design in Mexico and the Southwest, this book contains photos of spectacular adobe homes, inside and out, in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and various places in Mexico.

The book documents the evolution of adobe from its historic past to its most modern applications, including interior details and architectural elements. The authors chose well the buildings they use as examples for their premise that "adobe is an old tradition with a new future," the recurring theme of the book.

While I see how this book may be helpful for those with no art teaching experience, as an art teacher looking for some ideas for preschool projects I found this book useless. I am only writing this review because if someone had written one like I would not have purchased the book!

                  3 out of 5 stars Not earth-shattering, but solid.......2006-08-12

Yes, this book has many art ideas suitable for littles. Many, however, are pretty simple and obvious, so there isn't as much really helpful information as you'd think. Lots of them are the same as what you'd find in any other craft book geared to this age. That's ok, because you might not have all the other craft books, but it's something to keep in mind. Since I already have a fairly extensive collection of craft books, I didn't find a lot of new ideas in this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fun & Easy to Use.......2006-03-10

This is a wonderful book! Well organized and easy to use. I love the illustrations which really help with the projects and my 2 and 3 1/2 year olds love the ideas. The author's enthusiasm for art and creativity really show! I highly recommend this book for all who want to see thier children develop a love for creativity and art!

4 out of 5 stars I teach out of this book.......2006-03-04

I own an art store and take projects right out of this book and other books by MaryAnn Kohl. Her instructions and pictures are easy to follow and if you have even an ounce of creativity, you can adjust the ideas to suit your tastes, the situation, the available materials or the ages of your students. I teach somewhere between 5 to 8 pre-schoolers every saturday morning. I can say from experience that the Process really is more important to the child than the outcome. They don't come in to art class thinking like adults "Oh, what kind of masterpiece can I create for my portfolio today?" They just want to have fun, get messy and live in the moment. But while they are processing, they are learning quite a bit. The parents of my students really love the projects and I come up with new ideas almost every week because I have a huge library of books. The simplest looking projects that may seem dull to an adult, delight the children. So you really need to try them! Some people laugh when I tell them I teach art to 2-year-olds. They think that children so young cannot benefit from art education. But my little artists are so creative and fun. They really do make art! Get a few good books with projects like this and get involved with your children making art. You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this book........2005-10-21

I'm SO surprised to see the negative reviews on this book. No, the projects are not elaborate, but the cover states "It's the process, not the product"...which should clue you in. I sort of see it as an art meets science type book. This is what happens when you squirt water on marker drawing...this is what happens when you draw with wet chalk...it's about exploring the creative process.

I checked this out of my Parents as Teachers library, and liked it so much am now looking to buy it.

It's the Process, Not the Product. Primary Art is the newest book in award-winning author MaryAnn Kohl's art series, with more than 100 projects that offer amazing results to delight and teach children ages 5 to 8. A unique characteristic of Primary Art is that each art experience has three parts; it is introduced by a simple activity, progresses to a more experienced level, and finishes with a more intricate primary art experience. With this book, teachers, parents, after-school caregivers, and anyone working with children will encourage creativity, promote the process of art exploration, and appreciate the significance of the resulting art. Activities are sure to please, such as "Shimmer Paint," painting on aluminum foil with tempera and dish detergent, "Squeezy Batik," a batik resist using a flour-water mixture and watercolors, "Crinkle Scruncher," crinkled paper formed into sculptures, and "Jellie Dangles," ornaments made with gelatin! Key features of this book: Activities are presented from quick-and-easy to multifaceted. Three-part projects offer exploration of the qualities and properties of art materials, an introductory art experience, and a third project that builds upon the introduction. Everyday materials are listed to capture the imagination of primary children. Each individual's artwork will reflect individual creativity, not a pre-made sample or mock-up. All projects have icons that designate time requirements, adult involvement, materials, and experience level for artists. Ages 4-8

Patricia Ezzell, the TVA's historian, has selected 135 one-per-page photographs from more than twenty thousand in the archives and they really do reflect the wide range of activities the Authority was involved in, dam and reservoir building, power generation, fertilizer production, reforestation, mapping and surveying, flood control and more.

The book is divided into three sections, Depression Era, War Effort and Growth and Change. Although social photographer Lewis Hine was hired for a month in 1933 and contributed 197 photos in that time the majority of photos in the book are by Charles Krutch. He took thousands and it is the range of subject matter that makes the book so interesting to me. As well as the obvious technical shots of dam construction Krutch also photographed temporary house building for construction workers, village and small town life, recreation centers, farming and folks relaxing in their homes enjoying the benefits of cheap TVA electricity.

The photos in the last section, Growth and Change (basically from 1945 to 1963) are devoted to the everyday. The TVA was by then established and you can see photos of transmission lines, aerial shots of large corporate plants, increased freight traffic on the Tennessee River, school visits to farms and even the contestants of the Miss Guntersville Lake Beauty Pageant. All thanks to the vision of the Roosevelt government years earlier.

The book is well printed and designed and the author writes a brief introduction to the TVA. The back includes a useful bibliography and index. My only criticism is that the map on page seven is woefully inadequate, the excellent captions with each photo mention places that I wanted to find out where they were but couldn't, I ended up using the TVA's interactive map on their website. Apart from the map this is a wonderful book about a huge endeavour that really made a difference to so many people.

                    Book Description

The legendary jazz illustrator finally gets the coffee-table treatment. Fantagraphics Books is proud to publish the coffee-table style art book accompanying the traveling Arnold Roth exhibition celebrating 50 years of cartooning. The exhibit will showcase almost 100 pieces of Roth's work, drawn over the last 50 years, and will travel to approximately ten venues throughout the United States and Europe from September 2000 through 2004.

Roth is one of the most successful cartoonists of the second half of the 20th century, whose work has appeared in Playboy, Esquire, Time, National Lampoon, the Saturday Evening Post, Sports Illustrated, Punch, Premiere, the Nation, Mother Jones, Harper's, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, TV Guide, Smithsonian, and many other national magazines. He is the creator of the classic newspaper strip Poor Arnold's Almanac (collected in 1999 by Fantagraphics), and he is perhaps best-remembered for the numerous album covers he illustrated for jazz great Dave Brubek. Roth was also a regular artist in Harvey Kurtzman's three post-Mad humor magazines, Trump, Humbug, and Help!.

The exhibition catalogue is printed in an oversized format and features both black-and-white cartoons and strips and an abundance of Roth's gorgeous, vivid watercolor cartoon paintings, all of which appeared in disparate magazines over the years and none of which are readily available to collectors and fans.
