        Book Description

In Through the Windows of Paris, the reader is spirited away, like Alice through the looking glass, to a Paris where old-world skill and personal service are still the rule. Each of the 50 listings--every one the sort of establishment you'd love to seek out on your next trip--is treated with a rich spread of color photographs and an evocative depiction:

[Le Pont Traversee] One of the grandest boucheries in Paris, with the patterned marble façade and carved wood frames, has become a wonderfully ramshackle bookshop that specializes in literature of every kind. Established in 1974 by the poet Marcel Béalu, it is now run by his widow, Josée. Ceiling hooks recall the sides of beef and lamb that must once have occupied the space; now the challenge is to step lightly around tottering piles and climb the ladder past laden shelves, hoping they won't come crashing down in your search for an elusive volume of Baudelaire's poetry.

Step through doors decrepit or grand, deco or nouveau, and discover a wealth of unique, handmade treasures that would put Cartier to shame. The wine merchants, chocolatiers, toy makers, milliners, antiques shops, and lingerie makers celebrated in this charming little book define craftsmanship and good taste, and provide a sumptuous alternative to a day in line at the Louvre. --Jhana Bach

        Book Description

Shop windows and interiors are among the glories of Paris-as enticing as its museums and grand vistas but far less tiring to explore. They distill the qualities we most admire in the City of Light: a love of fantasy and tradition of craft and style, and the art of doing simple things well. The richly illustrated text of Through the Windows of Paris sketches the history of shopping in Paris and evokes the special character of the city. There is no better place to find it than in the boutiques selling crusty bread and creamy cheese, witty hats and luxurious lingerie. Michael Webb has chosen fifty of the most intriguing shops in Paris for their individuality and the beauty of their displays. New or old, tiny or expansive, they engage all the senses and reveal the true character of the capital. This book comprises 160 color images of fifty unique shops and a comprehensive list of addresses, telephone numbers, and metro stops. Whether you make the trip from your armchair or hop on the next plane, this book will guide you, in words and pictures, through the windows of Paris.

a wonderful book, showing the real character of paris to whet your appetite. as someone who is soon to go to Paris for the first time, i loved this book for doing the legwork for me in finding those little boutiques that add character to your holiday , that i probably would have missed. i'm sure they will lead me to other great little shops and experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book - great addresses!.......1999-06-09

As a part-time resident of Paris, I thought I knew all of the "bons addresses", those hard-to-find shops where you can find that perfect, unique gift for yourself or someone at home. I was wrong! On my next trip to Paris, I'll be looking into a number of the lovely boutiques mentioned in this book. Not only are the addresses provided, complete with compelling descriptions, but there are gorgeous photos that make your mouth water in anticipation of actually visiting these havens of shopping pleasure, if only to browse and take in the beauty of their wares. Bravo to the authors and photographer!

          Book Description

Retail design is quickly learning new ways to entice the customer. To create a unique and captivating shopping experience, shops use interactive technology and commission stunning works of art; fashion brands team up with celebrity architects to create brand strategies and generate publicity; and irony, humor, and playful elements of surprise turn into mainstays of retail interiors. From the giant, breathing mannequins of Mandarina Duck in London to the high-tech dressing rooms of Prada in Los Angeles, Design for Shopping provides a detailed, behind-the-scenes examination of the sometimes jaw-dropping, sometimes whimsical, and always breathtakingly creative ways that today's most exceptional shops appeal to the customer's imagination.

Accompanied by architects' floor plans and vivid color photographs, Design for Shopping showcases a comprehensive selection of recent retail interiors from around the world. Following an insightful introduction which examines the historical and sociological variables in current shopping culture, the book is divided into seven chapters which discuss themes such as the reinvention of old brands; technology and shopping; the emerging intersections between architecture, art, and fashion; play and shopping; new ways and places to shop; and how store design and branding have become intimately related to selling a lifestyle. Fascinating case studies illustrate each of these themes, with thirty-five stores discussed in total. As a special feature, each chapter begins with an interview with a prominent figure in the world of retail design. Designers, architects, and retailers interviewed include Marcel Wanders, Hani Rashid, Amanda Levete, and Terence Conran. The perceptive text, coupled with the gorgeous illustrations of the stores (shops presented include Gucci, New York; Helmut Lang, New York; Prada, Los Angeles; Armani, Hong Kong; Dior, Tokyo; Mandarina Duck, London; Fendi, Paris; Miss Sixty, Barcelona; Villa Moda, Kuwait City) makes this book a must-have for anyone interested in design, architecture, shopping, or culture.

5 out of 5 stars A revelation of Retail Store Design Rules!.......2001-10-27

Very informative. This book covers all aspects of the retail store design process. From the design of the space to how it effects the public. It would be a great book to use as text at the educational level of Designers/Architects as well as a great reference for professionals.

1 out of 5 stars I know you have more important things to do...........2001-09-25

than to try to get thorugh this one. I'm guessing this is the previously published copy with updated pictures, but....the "photo-copied" pages are so hard to see, you would be better off going downtown or to your local mall for information. Sorry, did not even read this before I returned it. The quality is so bad, you'll kick yourself for buying it....

3 out of 5 stars Good content poor printing.......2001-09-01

The content of the book is great and there are lots of useful references for further readings. It can help a novice to quickly brush up his/her knowledge on the retail design and construction subject. However, the printing, what I should say is the photocopying-like quality of the book really stunned me, not to mention this is a book with lots of store photos, the quality of the book is like a stack of photcopied papers with shades and tones on the black and white only photos.

This book was extremely helpful to me as an already practicing professional artist. It had helpful suggestions for handling new details that I hadn't approached in a long time. For the beginner to the professional, this book has something for everyone. If you are interested in learning new techniques for solving some of the problems you may encounter, this is the book for you!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For 2 or 3 Dimensional Artists.......1999-10-26

This is an excellent book for both the two dimensional artist or the three dimensional sculptor. It has a wonderful assortment of various ethnic faces for reference and gorgeous children of various ages and backgrounds. The proportional head charts are the best that I have seen. "Keys to Painting Faces & Figures" is beautifully presented and would be an asset to any artist's library.

3 out of 5 stars Great photos -- text too small.......2005-08-31

This book presents a series of black and white still life images along with information from each photographer on how they took the image and their approach to photograhy. I love the images--many of which are not done in a more standard style; instead there are many images that are grainy and toned -- in a word, soulful.

But the text is so painfully small, that its hard to read. I've seen this with another photo book from RotoVision, so I assume its a particular graphic style they've taken on. But it goes against the basic idea of putting text in a book, which is to convey information and ideas.

I'm always amazed when publishers do something like this. It seems that they would have the knowledge and skill to know better, so I wonder, how does this basic "unreadability" slip by? I imagine someone sitting in front of a very large computer screen, composing the layout of this book, and later marveling over the "look and feel" of how the book turned out. But they probalby never sat down and read the book or they'd know how un-readable it really is.

So, a book with great, inspiring black and white images. But get out your magnification to read the text.

Not as perfect as #1, but still very good. Perhaps too many plot directions happening at once - also some things a little hard to believe as compared to in the first book, such as the convenient stampeded of mammoths. Can't wait for the next 4 in this series to be published in English. NBM, Dargaud, please hurry!
