I live in Japan and purchased this book to see how people inter mix all the different blue and white dishes, materials and clothing. Great book to have for decorating your home. Can not wait to get to a few more Shrine Sales to pick up some more Blue and Whites.

This book is wonderfully photographed and written, focusing on the history of blue-and-white textiles and pottery of Japan. Just turning the pages gives a Zenlike feeling of rightness. Table settings, linens and furnishings don't have to match to give you a feeling of eating and living in calm and harmony

The author is an artist who works/worked for Impress rubber stamps and his book shows in great detail how to amp up the possibilities of your rubber-stamped artwork. You learn how to layer color, do a color wash, and to generally add dimensional color to rubber stamped and embossed art. There is such thorough coverage of every step and product used that you get the feeling that you could produce identical, beautiful results, too.
I'm especially pleased with this book because I couldn't find beginner-to-intermediate watercoloring instructions for rubberstamping anywhere else; all of the other books assumed I wanted to paint a Monet on a 3-foot square canvas instead of a stamped 4x6 card.

Great examples of making invitations & cards. In addition to the watercolor tips (don't expect a class in watercolors its more of an intro to the idea of using watercolors with stamps) there are also ideas on using your computer to print up words for the invitations etc. Colored pencils are also discussed in the book as well as blending techniques.

I have been stamping for awhile and wanted to get into watercolor. I am so glad I found this book! After reading the book (the step by step instructions were easy to follow), I got results that were truly amazing. I did not know how to properly use watercolors until this book! Also, many of the stamps I had on hand were easily substituted for those used in the book. It was a great purchase!!!!
The title is misleading.......2002-07-02
I was looking for a book that showed how to add color to stamping and this only pretty much covers watercoloring stamp outlines. I would have preferred to have known that is all it was about. I think in that aspect it does a good job. It is a very narrowly focused book that I paid too much for.

This book was everything that I'd hoped for! Lots of good instruction on using watercolors, etc. I also like that all of the stamps used in the book are available at one company... which makes it much easier to hunt down. :) Very good book, clear instructions.

This was a great book! The pictures really where touching.In answer to the ? the bunny has a head wound not a flower ( I am a HUGE fan of that picture!) I also LOVE the Psychotic duck and Fuzzy black bear! May Larry Gianettino rest in peace with all his little creatures.

Much like Joost Elffers or Saxton Freymann (those guys who do the Play With Your Food books), Larry Gianettino gets a lot of emotion out of little things. The book is made up of extreme, extreme close-ups of animal toys - the miniture type that you'd buy for 10 cents in a seedy novelty shop, that were made in china and don't quite get the anatomy right.
The emotion range is wider than just scary, however. Each photo is a glipse into a disposible, plastic life. Does the piggy want to play or cause terror? Is the lamb timid, sad or sleepy? More interesting is the effects of mass production on expression - is that red spot on the bunny a flower or a head wound?
Fun, funny and thoughtful. Plus the printing quality is phenominal.

Gianettino perceives childhood toys in a way different than most people might do; with horror. True colors are revealed when the plastic is confronted a little too closely for their liking. This book is mildly interesting as fiction but bears little or no resemblance to fact. One question: Why does someone who makes a living as a writer have to use a ghost writer for his "autobiography?" Don't waste your money on this.

Sid's book is a fantastic ride through Minnesota sports history. I picked up the book a true Sid Hartman sceptic. Come on, does he really know all these people? I won't give it all away, but Sid is the real-deal Minnesota sports fan. A true Minnesota legend. The many tales of Bud Grant, the Gophers, the Vikings, the Millers, his role in the Minneapolis Lakers, the Twins, and yes, Bob Knight keep you both entertained and laughing from start to finish. Read this book and you will know a true hometown fan. I only wish Sid liked hockey a little more. Love him or not, this book is a must read for any Minnesota sports fan, and makes a great gift to those no longer living in Minnesota, like me. Thanks Demps! Another must read for Twins fans is "Calvin: The Last Dinosaur," author unknown.

Andrew Wyeth: Close Friends is the first critical look at a significant body of paintings and works on paper depicting Wyeth's African-American friends and neighbors in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, a quaint village on the Brandywine River where he has lived since birth.
Beginning in the 1930s, many of Wyeth's African-American neighbors served as his models both in and out of the studio. Images of over 20 individuals are included, as well as depictions of their homes, farms, and meeting places. Wyeth's own words annotate the reproductions of his paintings and drawings and offer a rare glimpse into the mind of this truly individual artist. In her brief introduction, the artist's wife and collaborator, Betsy James Wyeth, recounts her arrival in Chadds Ford as a young bride and her immediate connection to the community she found there.
Andrew Wyeth: Close Friends includes over 100 color reproductions of major tempera and watercolor paintings and numerous black and white images of graphite drawings. Works reproduced are drawn from public and private collections, with a large number from the personal collection of the Wyeths. In addition to a foreword by museum director R. Andrew Maass, the book includes family photographs and facsimiles of personal correspondence.

A Great Andrew Wyeth Book.......2005-10-20
If you have nearly every Andrew Wyeth book and decided to skip this one, think again! I checked this out by looking at one at the public library and counted over 50 paintings and drawings not found in his other books. It is an absolute must buy for Wyeth fans. The thing that struck me most as an artist and photographer was the many way he found of posing his subjects. It is a textbook on portrait painting, and the reproductions are very good, as good as you are going to get with Wyeth. I find that I go back to this one time and again.

A Hollywood Cavalcade.......2002-02-04
This is a movie lovers book that should have some appeal to connosieurs. From Mary Pickford to the Three Stooges to Marlon Brando to Richard Dreyfuss, the selection is large, with names familiar to every movie-goer, including some not so familiar. The authors are also a diverse lot (usually directors or film writers), having either a personal or professional familiarity with their subject. This is both a boon and a bane. A boon, because of the opportunity for anecdotes or insights which only intimate friends or professionals can provide; a bane, because the tone and content of too many articles is too respectful. Readers would be better served by a greater critical distance between author and subject, so that the flaws of a more rounded human being can emerge. Too bad more profiles don't reach the level of Alvah Bessie's unforgettable reminiscence of Bette Davis, which is just the right mixture of sugar and spice. Still the entertainment value is high, and no book that includes the likes of Claude Rains, Lee J. Cobb, or Louise Brooks, can afford to be overlooked.
