Once upon a time these New Mexico towns were rough-and-tumble settlements peopled by drifters and dreamers. Sante Fe and Taos are still very much a cultural rendezvous, but far removed from their humble beginnings; Sante Fe has lately become known as the Beverly Hills of the Southwestern U.S. Among its full-time residents are the Dennises, the husband and wife author-photographer team who host this tour of their neighbors' private homes. The owners and designers weigh in with their own words about creating these eclectic sanctuaries, making it a very personal tour.
Book Description
At last, a beautiful, affordable style book that offers a rare insider's look at the highly personal and innovative aesthetic for which the Southwest is famed. Santa Fe residents Lisl and Landt Dennis have documented eighteen of the most unusual and awe-inspiring homes and gardens of the Santa Fe and Taos area. Meet the owners and designers, tour their homes, and witness the grand vision and loving detail they have devoted to their living spaces. With two hundred gorgeous full-color photographs, Behind Adobe Walls is an essential keepsake for the Southwestern native or visitor, and a visual inspiration for anyone who would like to create their own Santa Fe, wherever they may call home.

perfect.......2007-09-15
This book is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Perfect condition and rapid delivery. Excellent service.
Nice photography!.......2006-07-29
I am a native New Mexican and even though the others did comment on how nice a book about "real" New Mexicans would be, I do love this book for the excellent photography. It is on my coffee table now and I just love looking at it!
The photos ARE in color..........2003-08-07
Unfortunately, the sample pages are in black and white. Never fear, they're actually IN COLOR in the actual book!
Got this for my Mom, she loved it!
I Live Here!.......2001-05-01
I would NOT loan out my copy of this book! I live in Taos (moved AFTER reading the book) and have since been to some of these homes, they are wonderful...and not at all pretentious...as one reviewer said. I use this book even today for inspiration in my own Taos home.
Colorful inspiration.......2001-02-21
I was specifically on a quest for inspiration for Santa Fe style decorating with bold color schemes, somewhat off-the-wall furnishing choices and the like. This book fit my needs perfectly, I'm happy to say. I agree with other reviewers that the book is rather limited in scope, but it was exactly what I was looking for. Beautiful photographs, clear writing, overall a very dynamic book.
Book Description
Recent U.S. Census Bureau information shows that the southwest holds incredible gravitational pull for a great number of Americans, more and more of whom are moving to live among the deserts, plateaus, distinctive mountains, and glorious red and orange sunsets that only the west can provide.
Americans have been hungering for the wide-open skies of the west since the early days of this country and out of their continuing migration has sprung Santa Fe, which continues to grow in importance, in meaning, and in influence.
Santa Fe's popularity is immense. The "Santa Fe style" can now be found all over the country, manifested in clothes, furniture and furnishings, and interior design. Santa Fe: Houses and Gardens, with its sumptuous photography and lucid prose, makes clear that this popularity is well-founded.
Santa-Fe: Houses and Gardens presents the most significant and influential houses of the region, including Mabel Dodge's house of 1918, with its hand-painted windows by D. H. Lawrence; the house of Randall Davey, an artist who was influential in the movement to revive traditional adobe building techniques; and the Myrtle Stedman house, built following her injunction that it be "stretched out like a lizard in the sun." This book does not limit itself to traditional historic adobe houses, but covers many of the region's most important private homes and museum houses with their gardens.

Wondering.......2007-03-21
I haven't purchased this book although I thought about it. I wondered after reading some less than stellar reviews here whether I should in fact, spend my hard-earned dollars. So I figured I'd google the authors and have a look at their work in order to judge how much they could impart about collage. Well, there wasn't any art available for viewing from any of the three women involved in this work to be found on the web!!! This, combined with the nebulous reviews here, means maybe I should just hang on to my sheckels until a book by collage artists who have some fresh ideas to publish.
CollageArtist .......2007-01-09
I was disappointed with this book as I didn't realize I already had part of it from another book I had purchased by the same author. While it does give good instruction and shows collage techniques I haven't yet learned, I don't think it was really worth it for me to have the same information in two separate books.
An Inspirational Resource Book.......2007-01-04
As a collage artist I am always looking for new techniques and ideas, the Collage Sourcebook:Exploring the Art and Technique of Collage certainly fulfilled this wish. The book covers many techniques with clear inspirational examples. I really liked the way that various artists were featured with details of how they created their diverse and amazing works of art. If you are a beginning or more advanced collage artist this book will provide plenty of information and inspiration.
Amazing, current resource.......2006-11-10
This book gives plenty of "project how-tos" but is not as much a "craft" book as is indicated by the tags heretofore attached to it. Contemporary artists doing collage in methods you might not have imagined are included. The work of these artists is amazing and inspiring and leaves plenty of room for growth and experimentation for the collage artist. I highly recommend this high-quality text.
Might be a big waste of your money........2006-03-19
What a rip-off! As others have said, this book is nothing but a compilation of 2 other books. Do the "Look Inside" trick and on the inside first page it credits the two books. This information SHOULD be fully disclosed in the Amazon description, as not everyone to reads all the reviews. Only by chance did I see this book at my local B&N, checked it out and discovered the hoax. Otherwise I might have ordered it and been really mad because I have the other 2 books. The book "Making Memory Books and Journals by Hand" is the same type of rip-off and again, I think Amazon should include this data up-front, in the description.

Complete introduction into traditional wedding photography.......2007-08-18
It is the first wedding book that I like out of three that I have. Easy to read and understand, covered every area that I had questions about, nice and light humor. Full of useful examples and advices. I immediately saw how implementing some new techniques from this book can improve my work.
Outdated!.......2007-07-03
I was disappointed with this book. There were some good ideas such as formal posing, but otherwise, outdated. A better wedding photography book by far is "Digital Wedding Photography" by Glen Johnson.
Whether you like this book will depend on your photography style.......2007-06-05
If you lean more towards wedding photojournalism, you'll find this book annoying. The author takes stab after stab at the photojournalistic style and concentrates on listing which images you can sell after the wedding.
I found the photography examples rather cheesy and old. The "Posing" chapter starts with a full page image of a bride and groom (almost smack in the middle of the photograph) and the groom's arms hanging down to his sides. I'm new to wedding photography, but even I know that's poor posing! It has some good points, but I wasn't too impressed.
If you're into Traditional style of photography, this is a very good book for you to read. The author breaks the wedding down to almost every kind of picture you should create and how to make it sell at the end. It will be useful to you.
So far, after having read 4 separate books on wedding photography this is my least favorite.
Well organized guide.......2007-05-13
I have bought several books on posing and wedding photography. This is my first covering the most important aspects of the wedding photography business. Although it admits the prevailing tendency of admitting casual, journalistic photos on a wedding album, it still thoroughly explains the conventional wedding photos. It also describes how to deal with the business side of this activity. I consider this book a good very good source for those of us who would like to enter on this field of photography.
Very Informative.......2007-03-27
I've been reading through this and have found it very informative. I'm happy with my purchase.

this book is not for everyone.......2007-09-10
if your looking for a book to help you on your way ,forget this one ! if you dont have hassleblad or other high end equipment' forget this book, if your not already a professional forget this book ,if your using digital media , forget this book, the book however does have some good pointers and suggestions, but if avant garde photography isnt your bag,,, forget this book. i was extremely disappointed in the way it seemed to just address the already established proffessional, and last if your not interested in black white and infrared film usage forget this book!
maybe if this book was updated it would be better but that is a big maybe
A Must Have Book.......2006-03-08
You must have this book and read it... you will learn something and giving ideas... I do not mind what camera they used but the measurement of lenses is very important... I searched throught out the web site... my conclusion are most of wedding photographer I counted used 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm and 300mm. My attention is to shot portrait and wedding therefore I bought 50mm and my 85mm is on the way but I could not afford to buy the rest might be the wide lens and zooms

decent, but starting to age.......2006-03-03
The imagery in this book is of a fairly high quality. The locations and scenes look believeable; nothing over-the-top and extravagent like some books show (by that I mean, obviously created by wedding photographers who shoot only for the wealthy in the best locales). The complete lack of digital is a real weak point to this book. As of the time of this review, I'm told that nearly 95% of wedding photographers shoot digital, especially starting out. Therefore the equipment suggestions, while still somewhat informative, are heavily dated (the primary emphasis on medium format, while compelling, is no longer the most efficient way to get going in the business). The images are all high quality and quite inspiring. It's a decent work, but I'll probably buy a few more wedding photography books before finding the one that does me the most good.
Excellent Primer for the Budding Wedding Photographer.......2006-01-04
The images in this book are very inspiring. Studying the imagery alone is very educational.
A constant student of light and photography, this was my first book on Wedding Photography. After reading it, my wishlist grew to include more lenses, camera bodies and flash units. And my photo-journalistic wedding photography improved (results may vary ;)
This book will have you thinking more about contemporary, artistic and moody images to be captured on the Wedding day. You'll also begin thinking about your services and the value you can offer your clients. This book will have you thinking about adding an assistant to your list of must-haves for every Wedding job--an assistant who understands your vision and goals for the wedding day adds so much to the quality and quantity of images you can take on that day which (hopefully) is a once-in-a-lifetime event for your clients.
This book does not cover so much about Engagement photos, group formals, or the marketing of your services (although these topics are covered briefly).
I also recommend "The Best of Wedding Photography" by Bill Hurter.
Better than most..........2005-10-25
Get this one! There are scads of average books out there on every subject in photography. Most are dry, dull and a waste of ink and paper. This one opens a window into the soul of the author (well, the photographer.. I think the actual writer was the co-author.) I have the distinct impression this is an expression of joy and enthusiasm from someone who started by doing what she loved and then slowed down long enough to write about it.
Book Description
From bringing in new clients to delivering the final proofs, this book covers all aspects of the highly competitive business of high school portrait photography. Studio owners will learn how to create interest in their product by drawing clients to their studio through appropriate advertising that both targets teenagers and appeals to their parents. Ideas for postcards, CD-ROM business cards, T-shirts, and other materials to help boost a studio's visibility are detailed. Once photographers have learned how to create interest in their product, they will learn how to create an attractive environment in their studio-what styles and types of images should be on display, and how to discuss make-or-break issues such as pricing. Technical advice is also provided on indoor studio- and window-lighting setups, outdoor photography, lighting, sets, exposure, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Parts of this Book are Good, but.......2006-05-12
Parts of this book are good, but a lot of this is just outdated. I do not know any senior photographers that are still using film. The website info is not current nor is much of the information about TV and radio advertising.
The sections on understanding the senior and the booking of the session are well done. Much of the marketing ideas are also very good.
The section on indoor backgrounds and sets is a little weak, but the outdoor set designs and budgeting is great.
I agree with many of the other people that have left reviews that these photos look very old. I can't imagine the author still shoots this way today.
Good Beginner Guide.......2006-05-08
I found this book to be a good beginner guide to High School Senior photography. The author walks you through all of the elements to running a successful senior business. I do wish the author had gone into more depth regarding the marketing and the results. Blanket statements about knocking out the competition do not provide the quantitative kind of information that would be helpful. Tell me that when you sent out this particular mailer or another that you saw a 20% growth in bookings. Tangible info would be very helpful.
The bookj is really lacking in the area of digital imaging. I realize the book is a few years old, but some of the photos look like they were taken in the 80's.
I got enough valuable information to make the book easily worth the price I paid. If you are just starting out, this book will help you.
Could Use An Update.......2006-04-20
This is a pretty good book, but it really needs to be updated for today's photographer. The images in this book seem like they were old when the book came out. The photography seems like it is from the 1990's and so much has changed since then.
The marketing and sales info is still valid today. There are a lot of valuable ideas throughout the book
Overall, the photos would get 1 star and the marketing 5 stars, so I ended up with a 3 star rating.
Solid marketing Ideas.......2006-03-10
The author provides several good, solid marketing ideas that can be a benefit for any senior portrait photography studio. The book is worth the investment.
Great Place To Start.......2005-09-29
If you are an experienced studio photographer, then this or any
other book is probably not for you. If you are just beginning
or getting into Senior Portrait Photography - this book is a
great place to start. Ellie Vayo covers all aspects of Senior
Portrait Photography and gives great advice on the individual
approach to each client.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful pictures!.......2006-04-28
This book is well put together with beautiful pictures. The pictures are high quality and this book is really a conversation starter! The Playboy book began with pictures of Marilyn Monroe, which I have never seen before and they are beautiful. One thing that was disapointing were some of the stories. The print was so small that you could not read the story, only the captions. Another thing to watch out for is the dust jacket. It's very easy to see any small marks and the gold scratchs off easily. Keep it in a cloth to protect it. I recommend this book to everyone, even if you've never read a Playboy magazine!
The REAL Playboy.......2005-10-11
Although Playboy is what it is, and because of the reason why many people purchase the magazine, there needs to be an understanding of the true content of the magazine through the years. Remember that the magazine is usually only 20% sex and nude women. That leaves 80% every month to be used for art, technology, controversial editorials, interviews, etc. This tome is huge and heavy, and I'm glad it takes the reader through a tour of 50 years of the COMPLETE world of Playboy. If you only want naked women, don't buy this - buy either "The Playmate Book" or "Blondes", "Brunettes", or "Redheads".
What a beautiful book!.......2005-09-29
This book was definitely more than I expected with it's vibrant pictures and outstanding content. It gives you an in-depth peek into the world of Playboy above and beyond the photos. I also found the simple black hardcover to be very discreet.
Book Description
Photographers wanting to create great business portraits must go beyond easily composed, well-lit "mug shots" created in the studio. This book focuses on maximizing the bottom line and improving creativity, giving business-portrait photographers an edge over the competition. An overview of the business skills needed to achieve success in this arena is provided, including finding a niche, pricing portraits, advertising, marketing, and finding an assistant. The professional techniques that are a prerequisite for top-quality photography are presented, including technical advice on exposure, metering, diffusing light, and selecting the necessary equipment. A thorough discussion of composition and lighting considerations is appended to each image, and ample, clearly drawn lighting diagrams are included throughout.

Writes from genuine experience.......2005-02-04
I've decided to get back into professional photography after many years. I bought many photography books, DVDs, online courses so that I would get a feel for the market and customer tastes. A lot of books and DVDs are outdated, not only on equipment use (film vs digital), but also on portrait styles, and marketing techniques.
This is the most informative book that I've read on corporate photography, people portraiture, ligthing techniques and location challenges, equipment use, and a definitive guide for the business end - a major weakness for most artists. You can hunt the Internet to find what other photographers are charging for their services, but apart from obvious talent, you will not know why they charge what they charge. This books tells you how to calculate your costs and price your services for economic growth.
Although this book concentrates more on the corporate or business niche, the ligthing techniques and strategies exposed will serve you well for other types of photography. Ligthing set-ups and equipment used are explained in detail. The author even indicates timelines for set-ups and actual customer shooting time. This will help you in being realistic when you price your contracts. The high quality photographs can inspire your own creativity. A must read.
The author is also a coach for new and seasoned photographers. Check out his site at: www.photocoach.com I've never met Andre Amyot, but I've heard of him through other successful photographers.

Book Description
When ancient death cults and mushroom gods vie with fast food and infomercials for dominance of mankind, a 1500-year-old warrior must don his battle helmet again. Owing equally to 1930s pulp fiction and 1970s horror comics, fan-favorite Batman artist Kelley Jones presents this outlandish hero in an eerie, action-packed tale on the cutting edge of adventure comics. This 120-page book collects the entire 1997 sold-out miniseries, plus the epilogue from Dark Horse Presents.
Customer Reviews:
Holding back the stars.......2002-03-10
Kelley Jones should have gotten more recognition for his work in the wonderful world of Cthuluian lore. Here we have yet another adaptation of H.P.'s brainchild being meshed into popular culture, and Kelley doesn't simply give you yet another boring take we've seen a million times over. Anyone who likes their monsters loathsome, their heroes a bit deranged, and their works of art Lovecraftian will enjoy this. Even if you just like the horror take, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by what Jones brings to the table.
