Fantastic plates from original portfolios with examples of 1.......2002-01-25
It is difficult to find an original porfolio full of plates illustrating the work of the French "ferroniers" in the twenties. This inexpensive booklet lets one admire these marvelous and rare examples, many of which no longer exist.
Art Deco Ornamental Ironwork.......2000-04-01
This book is a collection of 670 illustrations. No text is included with the illustrations, but could be a good resource for someone interested in seeing the various types of design used in what was mainly cast iron. The books groups the ironwork into handrails, window balconies, railings. banisters, drapery screens and door panels etc. For someone looking for a copyright free set of graphics this would be a good choice. For those interested in finding out how this ironwork was made and by who it would be a bad choice. These is no explanation of who, when or how in this book - just a collection of detailed illustrations.
Book Description
Over 300 finely detailed illustrations, selected from rare turn-of-the-century sources, provide striking examples of decorative ironwork designed to embellish balconies, gates, window grilles, staircases, doorways, other architectural features. A rich source of inspiration and elegant, royalty-free material for graphic artists, designers, craftworkers.

Good resource.......2005-10-01
This book has plenty to offer. It is a good design reource to have on hand. One issue: some of the images seem to have been scaled down and fine detals have been lost.
This is just "clip-art", no words or photos.......2001-02-02
Not what I expected. Just as the title says, this is 670 illustrations. There is no text, no photos. Just illustrations.
Book Description
A must for architectural historians, restoration specialists and vintage home enthusiasts: 1,095 late Victorian-era designs, superbly drawn or photographed, including egg and dart enrichments; bead, flute and ogee enrichments; drapery and drop ornaments; urns, vases and wreaths; eagles, lion heads and gargoyles; rosettes, ribbons, garlands and festoons; sunbursts, weather vanes and more.
Book Description
This book opens up a fascinating new world of highly skilled craftsmanship. It explains how to distinguish between wrought and cast iron and points out the many motifs that master ironworkers created. It reveals how early blacksmiths fashioned delicate railings to grace Federal-style residences and how foundries turned out thousands of prefabricated iron building parts that were at once economical and decorative. Many readers will be intrigued by the stunning ironwork inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. Because ironwork in Albany and Troy was stylistically and technologically up to date with the best in America, this book provides a sound framework for comparing and documenting ironwork in other cities. A chapter for property owners explains how to repair ironwork and how to work with a contractor. For those who want to explore ironwork in upstate New York firsthand, there are walking tours of Albany and Troy.

unique tissue paper craft book.......2000-11-24
What is a rose window? It is a stained glass window on a grand scale, as used in Cathedrals. The author gives easy to understand directions for making tissue paper transparency decorations to hang in a window. The photos are lovely and show how beautiful tissue paper can look when light shines through it. The illustration on the cover is for what I consider to be the most difficult project in the book. There are many easier projects for the beginner to try first. Although the finished project looks complex, the projects are easy to make. Basically all that is needed is tissue paper, a handmade cardboard frame, scissors, pencil, and glue. Simple patterns are in the book and must be photocopied before use. These rose windows would make a lovely and unique gift, especially for adults. Twenty-five pages at the end are dedicated to instructions for large tissue paper scenes to hand in a window. The instructions for star money: a fairy tale scene and lantern-holding children are detailed, but once you understand the general instructions, you can make your own custom designs, such as celebrating holidays, festivals, or nature landscapes.
Book Description
Facsimiler reproduction of 74 extant cards from the 15th century plus four cards recreated to replace cards missing from the initial deck. The original cards are now divided between the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the Accademia Carrara, and the Colleoni family of Bergamo, Italy.

TAROT READERS.......2006-03-14
THE VISCONTI DECK IS MUCH LARGER , THEN THE RIDER -WAITE
.
DECK, I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS DECK FOR SEASONED READERS.
Glorious restoration! Museum quality!.......2005-08-25
This is the one and only as far as original images are concerned.
This would be the prototype of many others to come. I recently aquired this deck in its 2nd printing dated 1975. I absolutely love it, as it is the almost forgotten deck of so many modern ones! All others are launched from this one. I imagine many of the faces depicted here were actual individuals who lived during the Renaissance. Especially the court cards.
This deck is a must for serious collectors, readers and students of this wonderful art. It carries with it an eerie, from another time feel that should be experienced on its own. The sum of all Tarot decks is carried within. The "vibes" alone give it this supernatural effect that acts as a time machine.
There are no frills here. The cards themselves are large and difficult to handle. The backs are a simple dull red. The missing cards restored are obviously another artists interpretaions. All of the minors are not illustrated. Most readers should begin elsewhere. Nowadays, there are many places to start. Serious, advanced student should all be required to have a copy of this deck in their collection.
The other decks that mimic this one fall short. Lo Scarabeo published one close with gold leaf restored. It has writing on it and shrunk down to standard size-distracting. Also for a fun spin on this classic is The Medieval Scapini Tarot. I list that as one of my favorites.
Now just imagine finding this set of cards in a Milanese castle in a strongbox with other artifacts within. The possibilites are the fuel of novels greater than The Davinci Code...
Beautifully restored.......2003-03-22
This is the Visconti Sforza Tarot... the most "complete" FAITHFULL reproduction of the original deck cards that started in the Milan during the last years of 15th century...but let me talk about the cards.78 cards...4 missing...the devil, tower, knight of coins and 3rd of swords...since originally they were missing from the visconti collection. the cards are a large size. so its hard to shuffle. i personally think it's great that it does not have titles...because it maintains that authentic look. this deck is great because it sets the modern fallacies that modern tarot decks drew away from. such as the hourglass of "Time" card in Visconti and the modern lamp carried by the modern "Hermit" card...other examples go on and on. perfectly preserved... beautiful...the flaw? you CAN distinguish so easily the "missing" cards from the original 74...and I wished that the artistry has made it more faithful in color and look. and this is NOT the meneghello edition...which has a better reproduction of the 4 "missing" cards if you ask me. but it's great anyway. and there is NO back design...just plain reddish/marroon! How boring! why is it gettng four stars? BECAUSE! flaw in colors of the "missing" cards...too big of a size (I wish they resized it smaller) and the "plain" back design. get it anyway, it's a great deck.
A stunning genuine medieval deck for advanced tarot readers........2001-01-13
There are so many "medieval" tarot decks available now, but almost all of them are unconvincing modern interpretations. This deck is the real thing, a genuine facsimile of one of the earliest known decks. Tooled gilt backgrounds and hauntingly sparse and beautiful pictures make this deck a joy to use. I would only recommend it for advanced readers, though, as the Minor Arcana consists of the Suit symbols only, with no pictures to signify the cards meanings.

A mediocre commentary on the Visconti-Sforza deck.......2001-01-13
The book begins with a 15 pages introduction to tarot, which I enjoyed a lot - it is informative, readable, and I learnt from it.
The second part of the book - which is most of it's pages - brings color reproductions of the Visconti-Sforza cards, with commentary on each cards. As the book is out of print, I could find only a black & white photocopy of the book from which I cant say anything about the quality of the cards' reproductions.
As reproductions of the cards are available commercially and the book is out of print for a long time, I think most people would buy this book for commentary on the cards, rather than the reproductions of the cards and thus rate this book based on the text, rather than the pictures.
I find the text disappointing, especially considering the author. Beyond tracing copies of the cards (e.g. who painted them and who owned them at the time of the book's writing, etc) the text is doesnt bring a lot of information.
Some cards - both minor & major arcana - have only a couple of lines of text (e.g. commenting that in the pips of the coin suite with odd number of coins the arrangement is sometimes unusual), and in general I didnt learn much from it.
This is in contrast to such books as Brian Williams' (e.g. Renessance & Minchiate decks), which go much deeper into the history of tarot including comparison of decks and examples of art from the appropriate historical times.
This is a simple book about the deck - basic commentary about it's history and art with no serius attempt to put it in the context of it's time (e.g. art of the time or the works of the artists).
